Florida State, behind ace and potential No. 1 overall pick Jamie Arnold, makes the Seminoles a tough out in their home park. FSU has other good starting options in Joey Volini and Ole Miss transfer Wes Mendes, and a power-laden lineup with another future high MLB pick in Alex Lodise, plus Max Williams, Drew Faurot and Myles Bailey. Northeastern, at 48-9, enters on a 27-game winning streak, last having lost on March 22 to Towson. Coach Mike Glavine's offense is led by pro prospect Cam Maldonado and a pitching staff of Alvin Cabral, Jordan Gottesman, Will Jones, Charlie Walker, Brett Dunham and crew led Northeastern to a nation's best 2.92 ERA. Mississippi State caught fire late after the dismissal of coach Chris Lemonis, thanks to a red-hot last month from third baseman Ace Reese. The Bulldogs' pitching staff, led by Pico Kohn, Evan Siary, Ryan McPherson, Nate Williams and others, caught fire late, too. Can the Bulldogs find consistency and enough defense to get through a tough regional? Bethune Cookman's lineup, paced by Andrey Martinez, smacked 84 home runs and stole 128 bases in getting the SWAC's automatic bid by winning the league tournament.

Public concern over crime in Oregon has intensified, with a significant majority of residents expressing dissatisfaction with local government responses. A May 2024 poll revealed that 78% of Portland-area voters disapprove of how local authorities are handling crime, reflecting widespread unease across various demographics. This sentiment is further underscored by a December 2023 survey, where 74% of respondents expressed worry about becoming crime victims, and 90% were dissatisfied with public safety. These concerns are substantiated by recent crime statistics. Between 2019 and 2023, Oregon experienced a 10% increase in violent crime, contrasting with a 4% national decline. Notably, the state's murder rate surged by 53%, more than double the national increase of 22%. Aggravated assaults rose by 23% in Oregon, surpassing the national uptick of 10%. While property crimes in Oregon decreased by 11%, this reduction lags behind the national decline of 23%. Motor vehicle thefts in the state escalated by 28%, outpacing the national rise of 15%. You can read our full report on the issue here. Host and Chairman Earl Wright welcomes Mark McMullen, Vice President of Research and Policy for CSI Oregon, and Max Williams, former State Representative, former Director of Oregon Department of Corrections, and Past President and Senior Advisor of the Oregon Community Foundation to discuss the report, its findings, recommendations for a path forward and much more. The AI-assisted colonoscopy is available at all five Northside hospitals and six outpatient centers. STORY 2: Cherokee County to Observe Patriot Day Cherokee County's Annual Patriot Day Ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m. on September 11 at the Public Safety Memorial in Canton Rotary Park. Back in a moment Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Two More Public Hearings Set for Woodstock's Proposed Tax Increase Woodstock is holding two additional public hearings on a proposed property tax increase, with the City Council set to vote on August 26. The proposed millage rate includes 5.223 mills for maintenance and operations (M&O) and 0.454 mills for parks bond debt service, totaling 5.677 mills. This new rate is slightly higher than last year's but below the 2022 rate. If approved, property owners could see an increase in their taxes—about $27.55 for a $475,000 home and $20.30 for a $350,000 non-homestead property. Public hearings will be held on August 19 and August 26 at the Chambers at City Center. STORY 5: Ball Ground Floating Pay Raises for Mayor and City Council Ball Ground is considering pay raises for its mayor and city council, set to take effect in January 2026 if approved in October. The mayor's salary could rise from $300 to $650 per month, and the city council's pay from $50 to a flat $400 per month. This increase aims to align Ball Ground's salaries with neighboring municipalities, as current rates have been unchanged for over 20 years. The city council believes the adjustment is necessary to fairly compensate officials for their time and responsibilities. Additionally, the city is interviewing candidates for a new city clerk due to the retirement of Karen Jordan. For more details, visit the City of Ball Ground's website. Commercial: INGLES 10 STORY 6: Runners Race for Charity at CFA Cherokee County 5K Saturday The Chick-fil-A Cherokee County 5K, formerly the Moo've It 5K, takes place at Etowah River Park in Canton on August 17. This annual event, now in its 11th year, features a 5K race, a one-mile “calf run,” and a “nugget roll” for kids aged 2-4. Registration opens at 6 a.m., with the 5K starting at 8 a.m. and the other races following. The event, which includes a cow costume contest and a performance by the North GA Cloggers, raises funds for the Cherokee County Educational Foundation and Cherokee County Special Olympics. Over the past decade, it has raised over $300,000. Registration fees are $50 for the 5K, $25 for the calf run and nugget roll, and $25 for a “ghost runner” option. The race is held rain or shine. STORY 7: Georgia House Study Committee Takes Up Fishing Rights Jud Turner, former director of Georgia's Environmental Protection Division, suggested that state agency regulations might resolve the complex issue of public fishing rights more effectively than new legislation. During a House study committee meeting, Turner emphasized that rulemaking allows for public input and is well-suited for defining which Georgia rivers and streams are navigable for fishing. This follows legal disputes over fishing bans on private property, which led to recent legislative changes, including removing the “public trust doctrine” to address property owner concerns. The committee, tasked with clarifying navigability, has until December to complete its work but may not necessarily issue recommendations. We'll have closing comments after this. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette are back in studio talking about how the Trojans are undefeated and scoring 40+ points a game, but still have major questions on the defensive side of the ball. After coming out of the game early in the San Jose State, Nevada and Stanford games, quarterback Caleb Williams has had to play until the final whistle on the road at ASU and Colorado because the USC defense hasn't been able to get stops late in the game. We've heard from head coach Lincoln Riley and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch following Tuesday's practice and both coaches addressed the Trojans defensive issues in the second half in Boulder. The guys talk about what the Riley, Grinch and the defensive players had to say about the shortcomings of the defense and the challenges they will face against an very potent Arizona offense. Riley said the focus this week has been on two fronts, tackling better on the perimeter and keeping the quarterback in the pocket. They also talk about the player rotation on the defensive side of the ball including what Riley said about inside linebacker Eric Gentry slowing working his way back into the rotation following his injuries and time away from the field. On the injury front they talk about safety Max Williams and wide receiver Zachariah Branch missing the Colorado game but being on track to play against Arizona according to Riley. On Monday, a coalition that includes Max Williams, a former director of the Oregon Department of Corrections and former state lawmaker, announced it had filed paperwork for a ballot measure to “fix and improve” Measure 110. A key provision includes re-criminalizing the possession of hard drugs, like fentanyl and heroin, which were decriminalized with the passage of Measure 110 in 2020. That decriminalization, according to The Coalition to Fix and Improve Ballot Measure 110, has fueled open drug use on city streets and a spike in overdose deaths in Oregon, while failing to expand access to drug treatment and recovery services. Max Williams joins us to explain why he thinks Measure 110 isn’t working and why his coalition is seeking a remedy at the ballot box or through the state Legislature.

USC vs Tulane in the Cotton Bowl of 2023 to end the 2022 College Football Season was a disappointing loss for USC and especially after all the Caleb Williams highlights and Heisman Trophy win. Shane Lee, Calen Bullock, Eric Gentry, Max Williams, and Mekhi Blackmon should have performed better for this USC defense but it's not all on them as USC Defensive Coordinator Alex Grinch has been getting a lot of heat on this Lincoln Riley coaching staff. Many USC Football fans want Alex Grinch to be fired but it doesn't seem as though he will be. With Tul Tuipulotu leaving for the 2023 NFL Draft this USC defense will need to step up with new guys like Tackett Curtis and Mason Cobb and even Kyon Barrs in order to improve this defense and attempt to make the College Football Playoffs in 2023 after Caleb Williams solidifies himself as a two time Heisman Trophy winner and unanimous number 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. RB Marshawn Lloyd just transfer to USC from South Carolina. USC Trojans vs University of Arizona had many highlights in what was Caleb Williams and Lincoln Riley's best performance of the college football 2022 season. Kyle Ford, Tahj Washington, and Michael Jackson III all played well at WR for USC. USC vs Cal should be an easy win for the Trojans. The USC defense with Max Williams, Bryson Shaw, Calen Bullock, Shane Lee, Jaylin Smith, Tuasivi Nomura, Stanley Ta'ufo'ou, Tuli Tuipulotu, Ceyair Wright, and De'jon Benton struggled to stop the UofA offense with Jayde De Laura, Michael Wiley, DJ Williams, Dorain Singer, Jacob Cowing, Tetairoa McMillan, and Anthony Simpson but made the critical stops when they had to. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the Trojans narrow 17-14 victory over Oregon State up in Corvallis. It was a bit of a role reversal for Lincoln Riley's squad with the defense leading the charge while the offense sputtered most of the night, getting things going just enough in the final quarter to pull out the victory. On the defensive side Alex Grinch and his squad held OSU to just 14 points and one of those Beaver touchdowns came on an extremely short field when Oregon State started at USC's 22 yard-line in the fourth quarter. The defense again came up with some key stops but also again forced turnovers, this time it was four interceptions including the game sealer by Max Williams with just seconds left on the clock. Remarkedly the Trojans defense have forced a turnover on 33% of opponents drives this season (14 overall turnovers). Offensively everyone is wondering (including us) why quarterback Caleb Williams was struggling so much. The offense looked out of sync with plays breaking down faster than expected and when they didn't Williams seemed to rush anyway. The main highlight was Oregon transfer running back Travis Dye who had his 3rd-straight 100-yard performance as a Trojan. The offense does have an excellent shot at getting back on track this weekend with Pac-12 foe Arizona State coming to the Coliseum. If ever the USC offense needed a "get right" game it was this one and the Sun Devils are so bad they will likely accommodate. They also breakdown what they saw and heard from USC's Tuesday morning practice of Arizona State week and give some early assessments of what USC can expect with ASU in town. If you have a question for Ryan and Chris you can drop them an email at podcast@uscfootball.com. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts!
