Welcome to YARNS; Conversations with Cruisers, A Sailing Podcast James Frederick sits down with sailors he meets around the world to record their seas stories in remote anchorages and far-flung ports. All the interviews are recorded as a video podcast that is released on the Sailing Triteia YouTube Channel. They are also being made available as an audio podcast for those who prefer this format of content.  On this episode I interview Lin Pardey and David Haigh onboard David's 40-foot steel Van de Stadt sloop, Sahula. If you know anything about sailing, Lin needs no introduction. Her books have inspired millions of people to get out and see the world onboard small boats. She was one of the main reasons I thought this sailing dream, on a small boat with a limited budget. I had only just met David on the day of this interview but had done a bit a research on him ahead of time and read about his 11 year circumnavigation that was a combination of solo and short handed sailing taking him to unique places in the world, off the normal circumnavigation routes. Kim Kavin began her journalism career at a newspaper nearly 25 years ago. While many local newspapers have either been bought out, consolidated or shut-down, Kim Kavin made a move to yachting journalism before many of those changes began to proliferate. Her initial move to yachting was well, to Yachting Magazine.Kim walks us through those early days, explaining how she wound up at Yachting and the many other publications with which she's played a major role. Those other publications include: Soundings, Passagemaker, Cruising World, Soundings Trade Only, Yachts International, and Boatsetter. Part of that discussion includes how she successfully navigated a world occupied predominately by men.Kim introduces me to the practice of “enthusiast oriented journalism”. Unlike in the world of Woodward & Bernstein, the approach to covering a story about a yacht or charter is a different, yet valued pursuit. There exists a delicate dance between the yachting businesses and the journalists that cover them. She also walks us through some of the structural changes that have taken place at magazines, and how she now works as a freelance journalist and writer.Beyond Kim's work in the world of yachting journalism, she also has a love and passion for dogs that runs deep.  That passion runs so deep, her curiosity about the history of her adopted dog led her on a personal journey to discover the origin of her beloved pet. This was documented in her book, Little Boy Blue, released in 2012. CNN did a story on the book that ultimately resulted in a kill shelter being closed down. Most of our talk is about boats, yachts and the behind the scenes of yachting journalism. The last 10 minutes or so are about our mutual love of dogs and her work in that field. You can learn more about Kim, her writing history, accolades and links to her writings and advocacy for freelancers at her web site: http://www.kimkavin.com/And next time you pick up a copy of Yachting, be sure to look for her name and you'll be able to put a voice to the words. Julie Bradley was born with adventure genes and shares her passions in her books “Escape from the Ordinary” and “Crossing Pirate Waters”. Both are true stories about an 8 year adventure of sailing around the world with her husband, Glen.    After twenty years in the Army as a Military Intelligence Officer she traded her uniform and worldly possessions to pursue the dream that had inspired her to keep going through the long separations of military deployments.  During those years her stack of Cruising World, Sail and Latitude 38 magazines grew to hoarder proportions until the big purge of all belongings to buy their new home: a French built Amel blue-water sailboat.   Julie shares more about her passion for adventure and sailing and what it was like selling everything she owned to sail around the world.   New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Make sure to subscribe so you don't miss out.    To support the mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media. From Force 10 storms in the North Atlantic to the crystal blue waters and native dancers of French Polynesia, Escape from the Ordinary (book 1 of the Escape Series) opens a window to adventures in extraordinary places not found in travel brochures.   Told with keen observations and sparkling with wry humor, Julie describes the terrors and pleasures of living a life of total independence on a sailboat where even simple decisions can have big consequences.  This exhilarating, true story will thrill those planning to sail off into the sunset as well as armchair adventurers. Escape from the Ordinary reminds you of the unlimited possibilities in life and offers inspiration to go “all in” on your own dreams.   Crossing Pirate Waters (Escape Series Book 2)   You don't have to know a spinnaker from a mainsail to enjoy this adventure book. Join Glen and Julie as they continue around the world through less traveled, dangerous areas on the far side of the world.   Turmoil in the Mideast convinces Glen and Julie to linger in the South Pacific visiting primitive villages on remote islands. But hang on tight, because to finish their voyage they must leave friendly shores and navigate through trouble in the Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea before arriving in Europe.   Full of dry wit and compelling descriptions, Julie takes the reader along for the ride of a lifetime in this sequel (book 2 of the Escape Series) to her previous bestseller, Escape from the Ordinary.

He wrote about and got engaged in marine affairs for the University of Maryland Sea Grant College for more than thirty years. His first short story collection is Abraham's Bay & Other Stories (Dryad Press, 2009). The Montserrat Review said of the collection that "[Greer] is a wonderful storyteller and a poetic, powerful writer." Sailing magazine said, "[The stories are] haunting as we sail into cold fronts, storms, and hearts of darkness. Greer... attempts to convey what that veteran sea captain and writer Joseph Conrad says, 'Above all I want to make you see.'" The magazine Cruising World wrote: "A good book.... Grab a hot toddy and prepare for the ride."Greer's poetry has appeared in small magazines, including the online Beltway Journal, where he most recently contributed a poem to a collection honoring Langston Hughes, and our journal Artemis, which published his poem, "Flowers for Heather Heyer." His work has won acclaim for his writing and citations from the governor of Maryland & University of Maryland for his environmental work around the Chesapeake Bay. For more information;www.jackgreer.net

#249. Herb McCormick has made a career of writing about sailing, but it wasn't entirely on purpose. A fifth-generation Newport, Rhode Island native, Herb didn't even know that sailing was a thing at all until a chance meeting in his 20's. After vagabonding around for a while, he wound up with a low-level job at Cruising World during the heyday of sailing magazines, and slowly started working his way up, of course eventually becoming Editor. Herb has seen it all in sailing, from the racing and cruising scene to an epic 13-month Around the America's expedition on the 64-foot steel cutter OCEAN WATCH. I talked to Herb about what inspired him to follow his passion on the water. -- On the Wind is presented by Rutgerson Marine. And also supported by Offshore Passage Opportunities.

When Clara Dollman comes to meet our heroes off the coast of Norderney on October 21, it all kicks off. Carruthers has to make the cabin fit for a lady, Davies gets hot under the collar and there’s something fishy about the library of sailing books on board. We discuss the best books to have on a small boat, the history of Norderney, what makes a cabin woman-friendly, Edwardian cocoa, and how Childers has got his tide tables terribly terribly wrong. We then drift off into a long diversion about the popularity of 1970s TV series ‘The Onedin Line’ in Romania. Hopefully, we’ll be back on course in time to discuss the row to Memmert in the next podcast. Lloyd notDavies dives straight in by announcing he’s going on a sailing course (00:52), but what books might he have on board any boat he skippers? (05:11); Davies favours E. F. Knight (05:58), Cowper (09:29) and Macmullen (10:44); we list the top 25 books that one might except to find on a cruising saloon bookshelf (12:38); a brief discussion of George Crowninshield Jnr and the birth of small boat cruising culture (14:37). Tim notCarruthers gets very cross about Childers’s frankly cavalier disregard for tides and tide tables (16:55); he cites an article in Cruising World by Alistair Buchan proving that the events of October 21 are impossible to re-enact (18:09); there are consequences, too, for October 22 and the plausibility of the row to Memmert (22:52). Lloyd notDavies offers brief notes on Norderney (25:58); we discover that the island is practically British, thanks to Hanoverian connections (27:14); the case is made to put Isak Dinesen into our growing onboard library ( 29:49). Tim notCarruthers tries to understand womens’ cabins (31:30); details of the HMS Daring ‘unisex’ warship (32:14); drawer management on boats - is it different for girls? (34:50); cocoa as a woman's drink, and the story of Egbert Fry (36:52). Club business: Tony F reminds us about the German TV series ‘Das Rätsel der Sandbank’, allowing us to reprise the theme tune (42:08); how ‘The Onedin Line’ fuelled the revolution in Romania (43:14); Jon on Boulter’s lock in Berkshire (45:55); more on ‘The Onedin Line’ and on to ‘Howard’s Way' - we've gone too far... (46:50). Missions for next week: how possible is the row to Memmert?; more meals including breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel and dinner with the Dollmans; did the address at Schwanallee ever exist?   Sailing! Learn To Sail: Bareboat Cruising Certification Lessons for the ASA 104 Exam https://gumroad.com/l/bwXh SHOW NOTES: this week's podcast features a great  conversation with Roger Van Dyken, owner and founder of San Juan Sailing. In additional to giving us a background on how he started the company and insight into what makes the San Juan such a superb charter location, Roger also rev3eals that he  keeps on the French canals. Given the popularity of our previous segments on the French canals I'm hoping to get him back in a future episode to talk about some of his travels on the inland waterways of Europe. Roger's website addresses is http://www.sanjuansailing.com/ Here is some information on San Juan Sailing I took from their website which you may find useful: San Juan Sailing & Yachting - History It was a gamble, really. Back in 1982 we were warned that making your hobby your vocation would ruin a perfectly good hobby. I have always loved sailing, even before I had ever set foot aboard a sailboat. I checked out a sailing book from the library, got confused by all that strange terminology and frustrated, procrastinated. But in the summer of 1975, I gave my hard-working office staff a half day off and we went sailing together—first time. The wind whispered along at about 2 knots and I still was hooked! We bought a sailboat, chartered it out to help pay the expenses, and found we were making money by accident. So in 1982 we started SJS with two sailboats—ours and a friend's. We chartered them out, taught school on them and sold boats. I made many mistakes. And I quickly learned that I hated it when my guests encountered mechanical difficulties or dirty boats or growth on the bottoms. But I took such vicarious joy when they had a great time, that is was almost as if I'd been sailing myself. We learned a lot over the years, through good times and some really tough ones. I saw a number of my colleagues/competitors fail, and tried to learn from their experiences, as well as our own failures. But the passion that infused our staff to be rated as tied for the top charter company in the world by the readers of Cruising World has never left us. We brought that same perspective to our school (Marlene and I are both professionally trained teachers). Many of our charter guests and a good number of our boat owners first learned to sail from us. We were charter members of the American Sailing Association, and served on its Standards Committee and its Executive Board. Our brokers earned the reputation of looking out for our clients' interests. It has been fun hearing people enter the office saying “My friend bought a boat from you and says you are the only way to go." Ditto for sellers. Then, so a buyer could make an offer with confidence, we required a reputable survey before listing—the only company we know of with that requirement. And 100% of our brokers are required to be board certified. If our clients are having a great time, with boats as flawless (ask for our Preventive Maintenance Schedule) as possible (ok, they ARE boats), our whole world smiles. And if any one of them has a problem, I take it personally. Thankfully, we have been fortunate in having staff that shares our passion, boat owners who make the investment in boats, equipment, and preventive maintenance; and instructors who love to teach as much as they love to sail, to make it all happen. Best of all, we seem to attract a quality of charter guest that strives to bring their boat back in better condition than that in which they received her…if that's possible. Oh…and the hobby? Still our hobby. Among my greatest joys? Sailing in our islands, grin on my face, sighting another one of our boats doing exactly what we are…marveling in the beauties of God's great green earth. San Juan Yachting Nearly two decades after we founded San Juan Sailing, Joe Coons, a friend known locally as “Mr Powerboat", approached me.
