Cryptokenners kunnen het vast nog goed herinneren: het faillissement van miljardenbeurs FTX in 2022. Duizenden beleggers verloren een klap crypto's en bleven bedroefd achter. Die situatie dreigt zich te herhalen, nu het Amerikaanse cryptobedrijf BlockFills op omvallen staat. BlockFills leed naar verluidt tientallen miljoenen verlies en gaten in de balans zouden zijn opgevuld met klanttegoeden. Is dit de dominosteen die een volgende cryptocrisis in gang zet? Staatsoliebedrijven hebben de prijzen verhoogd, nu de olieprijzen flink stijgen. Toch blijft paniek uit in China. ’s Werelds grootste olie-importeur zet al jaren stevig in op de groene transitie, waardoor de afhankelijkheid van ingevoerde olie geleidelijk afneemt. Volgens FD-correspondent Roland Smid is China ‘het Midden-Oosten van de groene energie’. Lees: Duurdere benzine in China, maar energietransitie dempt de schok Het komt steeds vaker voor dat wethouders niet wonen in de gemeente waar ze in het college zitten, hoewel in de wet een woonplaatsvereiste staat. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van FD-redacteuren Jildou Beiboer en Nika Buijs. De keuze voor zo’n bestuurder van buiten kan meerdere oorzaken hebben, zoals een verhuizing of een politieke crisis. Bovendien is het vak complexer geworden, en dat vraagt om andere kwaliteiten. Jildou praat je bij. Het nablussen van grote bedrijfsbranden wordt vaak gedaan door de commerciële bandweer. Zij nemen het werk van de drukbezette reguliere brandweermannen uit handen, maar hiervoor krijgen de getroffen ondernemers wel een fikse rekening achteraf. Redacteur Rutger Overstegen sprak met ondernemers die onverwacht een rekening op de mat kregen en vertelt waarom zij de kosten vaak niet vergoed krijgen. Lees: Bedrijven gaan gebukt onder onverwachte rekening van particuliere brandweer Ruim €1 mrd. Dat bieden buitenlandse private-equityfirma's op HSO group uit Nederland. De automatiseerder is gevestigd in Veenendaal en groeide de afgelopen jaren hard onder de huidige eigenaar, het Amerikaanse Carlyle. Redacteur Jan Braaksma vertelt wat het voor bedrijf is. Hij legt uit waarom het nu zo aantrekkelijk is voor de private-equityfirma's, terwijl de fusiemarkt verder op zijn gat ligt. Daarbij dreigt een verbod op marketing en het aannemen van nieuwe klanten. De cryptosector is woest. Ze hebben een vergunning nodig van de AFM om te voldoen aan de nieuwe Europese cryptoregels genaamd MiCa, maar krijgen naar eigen zeggen te veel te weinig tijd. In andere EU-landen gaat het een stuk beter en dat brengt risico's met zich mee voor Nederland, vertelt cryptoredacteur Pim Brasser. De bitcoin tikte afgelopen week bijna de 100 duizend dollar aan: nog nooit was de cryptovaluta zoveel waard. Het digitale geld, dat gebaseerd is op een speciaal computersysteem, leek een paar jaar terug vooral een barstende financiële bubbel, maar is nu juist niet meer weg te denken uit de economie. Zo belooft de winnaar van de Amerikaanse verkiezingen Donald Trump dat hij de VS 'cryptoland nummer één' gaat maken, waardoor de koers van de bitcoin sinds zijn verkiezing al flink is gestegen.  Maar hoe wil hij dat eigenlijk gaan doen, de VS het ultieme cryptoland maken? En waarom zou je je als president eigenlijk interesseren voor cryptovaluta? Te gast is Daniël Mol, presentator van de Cryptocast van BNR Nieuwsradio.

De Amerikaanse staat Pennsylvania overweegt het aanleggen van een eigen strategische bitcoinreserve. Een wetsvoorstel om dit mogelijk te maken ligt momenteel bij het Huis van Afgevaardigden. Daarmee voegt Pennsylvania zich mogelijk bij een groeiende lijst van Amerikaanse staten die experimenteren met crypto-initiatieven, waaronder Florida, Wisconsin en Michigan. Pensioenfondsen in deze staten hebben al voorzichtig posities in Bitcoin ingenomen, wat de interesse van lokale overheden verder lijkt aan te wakkeren. Deze ontwikkelingen spelen zich af tegen de achtergrond van de recente verkiezing van Donald Trump als president. Trump heeft herhaaldelijk gesproken over een nationale bitcoinreserve, waarbij hij suggereerde dat de 200.000 in beslag genomen Bitcoin van de overheid de basis zouden kunnen vormen. Senator Cynthia Lummis uit Wyoming wil nog verder gaan en heeft plannen aangekondigd om die reserve fors uit te breiden. Dit alles benadrukt de groeiende rol van Bitcoin in de Amerikaanse politiek. Ondertussen klinken er steeds meer geruchten over het mogelijke ontslag van SEC-voorzitter Gary Gensler. Trump heeft eerder aangegeven dat hij Gensler op zijn eerste werkdag als president zou willen ontslaan. Het is echter nog onduidelijk wie zijn opvolger zou worden, mocht dat daadwerkelijk gebeuren. Naast een nieuwe leiding bij de SEC is ook de positie van minister van Financiën van groot belang voor de cryptosector. Namen als Kevin Warsh, Scott Bessent, Marc Rowan en Howard Lutnick worden genoemd als mogelijke kandidaten voor deze sleutelpositie in Trumps nieuwe kabinet. Op de markt zelf blijft Bitcoin zich bewegen binnen een smalle bandbreedte na de spectaculaire stijging van vorige week, waarbij het een piek bereikte van 93.500 dollar. Ondertussen heeft Michael Saylor, oprichter van Microstrategy, nog eens voor 4,6 miljard dollar aan Bitcoin gekocht. Dit past in zijn langetermijnstrategie, die hij het ‘21/21-plan' noemt. Het idee is om tegen 2025 minimaal 21 miljoen Bitcoin te bezitten of beheren via investeringsvehikels, een strategie die navolging lijkt te krijgen van andere bedrijven. De bredere cryptomarkt doet vrolijk mee, met forse stijgingen in altcoins zoals Solana, XRP en zelfs memecoins. Op macro-economisch niveau zien we signalen van een draai in het sentiment: met centrale banken die mogelijk minder renteverlagingen doorvoeren, kan dat ook gevolgen hebben voor de huidige marktdynamiek. Bitcoin wist deze week een nieuw record te vestigen in euro's: voor het eerst tikte de prijs boven de 67.700 euro aan. Het oude record, dat al enige tijd uit 2021 stamt, werd hiermee nipt gebroken. In dollars is het record nog net buiten bereik; met een recente prijs van 72.000 dollar scheelt het nog minder dan 1% tot de hoogste koers ooit. Andere crypto's blijven vooralsnog achter in deze opmars; Bitcoin lijkt, zoals vaker, het voortouw te nemen in deze rally. Of er een duidelijke oorzaak is voor deze opleving, is moeilijk vast te stellen. Volgens analisten werd er al maanden een uitbraak verwacht, en nu lijkt de markt ‘voor omhoog' te kiezen. Toch blijven de komende weken spannend, met zowel een rentevergadering als presidentsverkiezingen in de Verenigde Staten die hun effect op de cryptomarkt niet zullen missen. Bij Microstrategy, het bedrijf van Michael Saylor dat berucht is om zijn strategische aankoop van Bitcoin, draait het inmiddels uitsluitend om die cryptoreserves. Hoewel Microstrategy nog een regulier softwarebedrijf is, spelen omzet of winst nauwelijks nog een rol. Het bedrijf heeft nu voor ruim 18 miljard dollar aan Bitcoin op de balans staan, en Saylor maakte bekend dat hij plannen heeft om nog eens 42 miljard dollar op te halen. Daarmee wil hij dagelijks voor tientallen miljoenen aan Bitcoin blijven inkopen, gefinancierd door schuldpapier en aandelenuitgiftes. Het aandeel Microstrategy profiteert sterk en noteert dit jaar een stijging van ruim 250%. De beweging in de markt beperkt zich niet tot de private sector; ook vanuit de overheid komen nieuwe signalen rond Bitcoin-investeringen. Jimmy Patronis, de Chief Financial Officer van Florida, overweegt een deel van de pensioenfondsen van de staat in Bitcoin te beleggen. De staat Florida zou dan pensioenreserves van ambtenaren – zoals leraren, brandweerlieden en gemeentemedewerkers – aanwenden om in de cryptomarkt te investeren. Patronis verwees daarbij naar de ‘strategische bitcoinreserve' die Donald Trump recentelijk aankondigde tijdens een toespraak in Nashville. Trump stelt voor de Bitcoinreserves die de overheid ooit in beslag nam bij The Silk Road te bewaren, en zo een strategische reserve op te bouwen in plaats van deze te verkopen. Florida is overigens niet de eerste staat die dit pad overweegt. In Michigan en Wisconsin is Bitcoin al opgenomen in de pensioenfondsen, voornamelijk via beursgenoteerde fondsen van bedrijven zoals BlackRock. Vooral Wisconsin springt eruit: hier werd voor 160 miljoen dollar aan Bitcoin gekocht, een investering die inmiddels meer waard is geworden. Michigan volgde voorzichtig met een bescheidener inleg van 7 miljoen dollar. Het besluit van Florida lijkt dan ook een voortzetting van een bredere trend, waarbij Amerikaanse staten steeds vaker naar Bitcoin kijken als onderdeel van hun pensioenbeleggingsstrategieën. Molly White is the world's foremost critic of cryptocurrency, according to a recent profile in the Washington Post. A veteran Wikipedia editor and software developer, White documents the frauds and catastrophes in the so-called "Web3" space on her website Web 3 Is Going Great.
