Dear Sister is a breathtaking memoir about two sisters and the high-profile case involving Nikki Addimando, who was incarcerated for killing her longtime abuser. Michelle Horton, her sister, tells the audience about the harrowing years of Nikki's trials, incarceration and the devastating fall-out to raise Nikki's young children and to battle the criminal justice system. She speaks about her own healing journey in spite of the devastation to her family and community as they bore witness to the injustices of a legal system steeped in archaic notions about domestic violence victims. Michelle speaks openly and honestly about this heart wrenching experience and its impact on her life. Questions of comments? Today's episode highlights two books that grapple with hardships – and perseverance — within a family. First, Here & Now's Robin Young speaks with Michelle Horton about Dear Sister, a memoir chronicling how Horton's sister was arrested for killing her husband, the abuse she'd been suffering at his hands for years, and the family's fight to reduce her prison sentence. Then, NPR's Scott Simon speaks with journalist Lawrence Ingrassia about A Fatal Inheritance, which tracks generations of cancer in Ingrassia's family alongside research and developments in the medical field. In September 2017, after years of physical abuse and sexual torture, Nicole "Nikki" Addimando fatally shot her abusive partner in self-defense.  And in February 2020, Nicole was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison for killing the perpetrator of her abuse, where she became part of the 97% of women in prison nationwide who have experienced physical or sexual abuse.Long time listeners of WeSTAT know that I have been personally following this case very closely.  In 2021, I had the opportunity to focus on Nikki's case in two episodes: One with Rebecca and Wendy, two representatives of the Nicole Addimando Community Defense Committee, as well as with  journalist Justine van der Leun who partnered with Lemonada media and Spiegel and Grau to release a six part award winning podcast about Nikki's case called “Believe Her” .Through all of my following of this case, one person's name comes up over and over, and that is Nikki's sister, Michelle Horton.  Since Nikki's arrest in 2017, Michelle has been caring for Nikki's two children, Ben and Faith, quarterbacking her defense strategy and trying to figure out how to support Nikki, herself, and so many others that have been devastated by these events.  However, I have never had the opportunity to meet or talk with Michelle, until today.Michelle Horton is a passionate writer and advocate based in New York's Hudson Valley. As the caregiver for Nikki Addimando's children, and a crucial figure in Nikki's defense strategy, Michelle has emerged as a fierce advocate for survivors of domestic violence. Her forthcoming memoir, "Dear Sister," provides an intimate and eye-opening look at the challenges faced by survivors within the criminal justice system. Through her unwavering commitment and personal experiences, Michelle offers a compelling voice in advocating for the rights of survivors and shedding light on the pervasive issue of domestic violence.Buy the bookFor support and resources:Hour Children Survived and PunishedSanctuary for FamiliesCriminalized Survivors ReportSupport the showKeep up with all things WeSTAT on any (or ALL) of the social feeds:InstagramThreads : westatpodFacebookLinkedInTwitterHave a topic or want to stay in touch via e-mail on all upcoming news?https://www.westatpod.com/Help monetarily support the podcast by subscribing to the show! Feminism succeeded in making men and women forget how to talk to each other, and instead taught us to talk past each other. This process has been evolving since World War 2, when some of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers went to work in the factories, and decided (wrongly) that they don't need men. That's a lie from the pits of hell. Women do need men, and the longer they pretend they don't, the worse it'll be for them. But men and women are being reborn in Christ, together, and learning how to speak to one another again. This conversation between me and Anneliese from Feminine not Feminist is an example. In our conversation we discussed: The CS Lewis “Space Trilogy” Alison Armstrong's “The Queen's Code” Mom Culture and Resentment Was Eve Controlling Adam? Will God answer your prayer if you don't end with, "In Jesus' name, Amen?" Learn what praying in the name of Jesus really means. I taught this week on the call of Abraham and the development of God's missionary call through the nation of Israel as they were responsible to communicate the truth of God to the cultures around them. They were given that great commission. The great commission didn't start in Matthew 28. It started with Abraham in Genesis 12—the first three verses there—Abraham, chosen by God to raise up a nation who would then be God's priests to the world so that they would be a blessing to all of the nations. They had a unique role in the great monotheistic religion. The Jews were supposed to reflect morality to the world. Israel was to witness to the name of God. When they talked about the name of God and witnessing to God's name, that does not mean that they were to let everybody know what they called God, "Yahweh." Their goal wasn't to cover the countryside with evangelists who just let everybody know what the right word for God was. It meant something different. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆https://linktr.ee/jacksonlibon---------------------------------------------------#realtalk #face #instagram #SDF #SYNDICAT #DESPUTES #amour #take #couple #dance #dancers #vogue #voguedqnce #garden #tiktok #psychology #beyou #near #love #foryou #money #ForYouPizza #fyp #irobot #theend #pups #TikToker #couplegoals #famille #relation #doudou #youtube #twitter #tiktokers #love #reeĺs #shorts #instagood #follow #like #ouy #oyu #babyshark #lilnasx #girl #happybirthday #movie #nbayoungboy #deviance #autotrader #trading #khan #academy #carter #carguru #ancestry #accords #abc #news #bts #cbs #huru #bluebook #socialmedia #whatsapp #music #google #photography #memes #marketing #india #followforfollowback #likeforlikes #a #insta #fashion #k #trending #digitalmarketing #covid #o #snapchat #socialmediamarketing¹

She formerly led the Amazon Visual Search team in Atlanta, which launched visual search for replacement parts on the Amazon Shopping app in June 2018. This technology is a result of former startup Partpic (Atlanta) being acquired by Amazon, for which she was the Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Prior to working at Partpic, she received her Ph.D. from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2014 and worked for a year with Exponent, a technical consulting firm, in New York City. She is featured as Georgia Tech's inaugural top 40 under 40 alumni in the Class of 2020. Dr. Sephus is a native of Jackson, Mississippi and a 2003 graduate of Murrah High School/Power Academic and Performing Arts Complex (APAC). In September of 2020, she became the owner and developer of the Jackson Tech District, at least 12-acres of mixed-use commercial real-estate in downtown Jackson to bring tech training and workforce/economic development to the area. In addition to these, she is the co-founder of KITTLabs in Atlanta, GA which was created to assist in building equity and opportunity, targeting Black entrepreneurs in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math).
