Seems we can't go through an hour without hearing news about artificial intelligence these days. There are a lot of exciting developments, and some of the most exciting when thinking about space are coming from the USRA's Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science (RIACS), which is on the cutting edge of the cutting edge. In this episode, we're speaking with the institute's director, Dr. David Bell, who will walk us through the differences between current AI, agentic AI, and--are you ready?--quantum-powered AI, and their current and future potential to revolutionize space exploration and development. Join us!Headlines Trump budget cuts: The Trump administration's fiscal 2026 "skinny" budget proposes slashing NASA's funding by $6 billion—24 % of its current $24.8 billion—threatening SLS, Orion, Gateway, and Mars Sample Return programs. Planet 9 revival: Scientists re-examining 1980s IRAS and 2006–2011 Akari infrared data have uncovered new gravitational signatures suggesting a hidden Planet 9 at ~700 AU, bringing the search closer to confirmation. Speed-round catch-up: NASA's Psyche asteroid mission is battling low fuel pressure; the decades-old Soviet Cosmos 42 Venus probe is slated to re-enter around May 10; and a recent poll finds over half of Gen Z and millennials believe in alien cover-ups. Main Topic – AI in Space with Dr. David Bell USRA & QuAIL overview: Dr. Bell outlines USRA's Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science (RIACS) and its Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab—a collaboration with Google and NASA Ames driving AI and quantum computing integration in space missions Career path & pivotal shifts: With 20+ years at USRA and a prior decade at Xerox PARC, Bell traces AI's journey from 1959's first neural nets to the 2017 transformer breakthrough that sparked today's LLM revolution. Early AI successes: AutoClass's unsupervised learning on the 1980s IRAS mission discovered a new class of infrared stars, and ExoMiner's deep-learning engine has since validated over 300 exoplanets from Kepler data. Agent-based autonomy: USRA deployed mobile agents on the ISS to automate file transfers and Deep Space One's Remote Agent performed onboard planning, execution, and anomaly recovery in deep space during the 1990s. Evolution of planning & scheduling: The Europa planning engine—used daily for Mars rovers—has evolved into SPIFe (Spiffy) and real-time collaborative "playbook" apps, optimizing workflows on both robotic and crewed missions. Natural language interfaces: Clarissa, a precursor to Siri deployed on the ISS five years before commercial voice assistants, let astronauts query and navigate complex procedures by voice. Robotic assistants: Projects like Astrobee free-flying robots on the ISS and analog-terrain rover simulations demonstrate how AI-driven machines can support astronauts in exploration and maintenance tasks. Foundation models for Earth & space: USRA's Generative AI Lab is building multipurpose foundation models on global satellite data that now outperform traditional numerical simulations—forecasting weather faster and more accurately. Workforce development: Through the Feynman Quantum Academy and NASA-integrated data science curricula, USRA immerses students These show notes have been truncated due to length. We welcomed Dr. David Bell, Director of the Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science which is an institute of the parent company, Universities Space Research Association (USRA). Our guest introduced us to USRA, then we discussed its history and some of the history associated with AI and machine learning for space as well as other industries. We talked about ways in which AI has been used in space and is now being used for space exploration, weather analysis with satellites, imaging and more. Quantum computing was an additional part of our discussion, along with the energy needed for AI and quantum. In fact one of our callers inquired about the market for He3 for fuel for quantum. At time Dr. Bell said that AI for space was now routine, going on to tell us what parts of space were routine. Don't miss his commentary. Lots of other topics came up including self-replicating machines, AI for settlement, AI on the Moon and for lunar development, AI to further human spaceflight. Toward the end of our program we talked about global competition and a race for leadership with AI and Quantum. Listen to what our guest had to say about China in this context. Also plasma 3D printing, partnerships and the commercial industry. Please read the full summary of this program when available at www.thespaceshow.com for this date, Friday, April 25, 2025.

Marcella's interest in astronomy and atmospheric optical phenomena (photometeors) over time led her to create a scientific dissemination site (www.greenflash.photo) with about 1000 photometeor images and videos, even rare ones, observed throughout Italy and above all on the Iblei mountains (Rg) and on the Dolomites in Cadore, landscapes chosen for the great diversity of orographic, climatic and day and night luminosity, as well as for their position at the two extreme latitudes of Italy. In 2011 he received from the Minister of Public Administration the national prize for innovation in teaching in schools "Innovascuola". In 2015, his photo "Moon and Antelao" is included in the Shortlist of the Royal Museum of Greenwich photo competition "Astronomy Photographer of the Year", which selects the best astrophotography of the year from all over the world. The photo was then also published in the volume "Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2015" published by the Royal Observatory of Greenwich in collaboration with the BBC, the photographic site Flickr and the Collins publishing house and exhibited inside the Astronomical Observatory of Greenwich. The same photo will become the December image of the 2017 Greenwich Astronomical Observatory calendar. In 2016 he exhibited his photos in a personal exhibition in San Vito di Cadore (Bl), with more than 100 photos of atmospheric optical phenomena from all over Italy. The event was the first exhibition in Italy complete with video dedicated to photometeors. The work of dissemination through video and photography continues in the following years and many of his images are published by the major national astronomy magazines (Colelum Astronomia, Nuovo Orione and Le Stelle, Focus) and internationally (Astronomy Now, Sky and Telescope) as well as by websites of primary scientific importance such as those of Spaceweather, USRA and NASA. In 2016, he documents the visibility of the Maltese archipelago from the province of Ragusa and his images and his videos are broadcast by the Maltese national TV which, in the interview, define his works as the first shots of the Maltese archipelago by the iblei. Since 2017 he has been a member of the board of directors of CISA (Centro Ibleo Studi Astronomici), UAI delegation (Unione Astrofili Italiani) for the province of Ragusa, which aims to actively promote astronomy in the province of Ragusa, contributing with conferences on atmospheric optics. In September 2018, NASA publishes an image of him that captures the Moon setting next to the active crater south-east of Etna. In 2019 the national magazine "Nuovo Orione" publishes the calendar with its images: 12 photos that tell the sky of the Dolomites and the Iblei. For the summer solstice of 2019, NASA publishes his work on the solar Analemma, a work selected for its didactic value and for the singularity in creating an "Analemma at sunset".On May 31, 2020, his photos of the Green Ray taken on the Sun, Moon and planets, become NASA 's photo of the dayIn the summer of 2020 he sets up two twin exhibitions, in northern and southern Italy, between the municipality of Isnello (PA) and San Vito di Cadore (Bl) On September 26, 2020, his photo Moon Pairs and the Synodic Month ” becomes NASA 's photo of the dayOn November 11, 2020, his “Colors of the Moon” photo becomes NASA 's photo of the dayOn October 16, 2021, on the occasion of the “International Observe the Moon Night 2021”, NASA chooses its photographic work, created in collaboration with Gianni Sarcone, “ Moona Lisa ” as the astronomical photo of the day.Collaborate on the 2021 calendar of “ Severe Weather Europe” for the month of February For professional deformation, he always combines his passion for photometeors with his profession, focusing his works on the didactic, informative and originality value, trying to grasp what has never been produced yet, simplifying to make it affordable for everyone.Component of the Pictores Caeli is a group of astrophotographers born to share ideas and suggestions on astrophotography. The goal is the union of mutual technical and artistic skills to develop high quality images, certified by a shared brand. The purpose of Pictores Caeli is to restore the sense of wonder that one feels at the moment of observation and shooting, narrating sidereal events, contrasts between architectural and natural elements, and stimulating suggestions that go beyond phenomenal objectivity through the photographic medium.Although a lens and an observation point determine an interpretation of reality, Pictores Caeli follows a shared protocol in order not to alter the scientific data, using and experimenting with the best shooting and post-production techniques.Photography for Pictores Caeli is conceived as an art form, and represents a moment of contemplation, growth, knowledge, research, experimentation and sharing.

Studying nighttime images of the Earth taken from satellites could go a long way toward building policymakers understanding of disasters around the world, and how to manage risks. That's according to the UN's latest Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction. Eleanor Stokes is a contributing author to the report, and helps lead the science team for a project called Black Marble. The joint effort by NASA and the Universities Space Research Association captures nighttime data around the globe every single night. Stokes is a senior scientist at USRA's Earth from Space Institute in Columbia, Maryland, and she joined the Federal Drive with Tom Temin to discuss more.

Listen to the audio version of this story directly belowTwo Dates Added; Modifieds, Limited Modifieds, Factory Stocks to be USRA-SanctionedFORT WORTH, Texas (February 17, 2022) — XR announces rebrand of summer racing series at Texas Motor Speedway to the “Texas Weekend Series” with three classes to be USRA sanctioned.Originally called the “Texas Monday Series” in its inaugural 2021 campaign, this year's rendition of the summer series at The Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track will be called the “Texas Weekend Series”.The series will showcase three classes sanctioned by the United States Racing Association (USRA): Modifieds, Limited Modifieds and Factory Stocks. Two more XR-sanctioned classes will join them: Stock Cars and Cop Stocks.XR also announces an additional two race dates to the previously announced schedule. The original schedule featured four Sunday/Monday shows April 24-25, June 26-27, July 24-25 and August 21-22 with the Championship race on Monday, September 5. The extra dates will be Saturday, June 25 and Saturday, August 20, making those events Saturday through Monday event weekends. Every race day will be its own show with payouts and points awarded.“We're excited to have USRA come on board and sanction the Modifieds, Limited Modifieds and Factory Stocks,” said XR Chief Operating Officer Dan Robinson. “USRA will provide a stable rules package. We also wanted to give racers two more opportunities to race, especially with the unfortunate cancelation of the Texas Tune-Up. The two Saturdays made perfect sense and will be a great addition to the Texas Weekend Series.”Additionally, XR-sanctioned Stock Cars and Cop Stocks – a class for 1995-2011 unaltered Ford Crown Victorias, Mercury Grand Marquis or Lincoln Town Cars – will join the Texas Weekend Series for 2022. Full Cop Stock rules can be found HERE.A total of 10 regular season rounds are scheduled for the Texas Weekend Series, and drivers will accumulate points throughout those rounds toward eligibility into their classes' Championship races on Monday, September 5. The top 20 in regular season points will be locked into the Championship, with the final four spots in the Championship feature open for drivers to race their way in during the Championship event's heats races.2022 Texas Weekend Series ScheduleFull Texas Weekend Series event and ticket info can be found at www.texasdirttrack.com.
Every time we've figured out a different way to look at the Universe, going beyond the capabilities of our own meagre senses, we've opened up an opportunity to learn something new about what's out there. Although optical astronomy and near-infrared astronomy are arguably the most popular ways to view the Universe, with James Webb soon to bring the mid-infrared Universe into view as never before, we shouldn't forget about the value of other, more distant wavelengths of light. One of the most fascinating sets of data that we can collect is in the far-infrared, where gas heated to just a few tens of Kelvin shines, but where much hotter, even ionized gas can emit very special hyperfine transitions. Mapping out these regions of space helps us understand what's going on beyond mere star-formation or other violent events, and a series of remarkably specific observational techinques are, quite arguably, how we're obtaining the most valuable information of all in this part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Joining the Starts With A Bang podcast to help guide us through the topic of far-infrared astronomy is Dr. Jessica Sutter, an astronomer at NASA Ames who's part of the USRA and who works with the SOFIA telescope, a one-of-a-kind far-infrared observatory that can do what no ground-based nor space-based observatory can. Have a listen, and I hope you wind up learning as much as I did! Welcome to our show Unsealed: Life Beyond the Bolts! Each week, Kate Dillon from Crate Insider and Steve Hendren from Hendren Racing Engines go live on the Crate Insider Facebook page to chat about world events, random things, and to answer tech questions. This Week We have a had an exciting week prepping for the Racelogic Chassis School that will take place this weekend. Okay, so Steve hasn't prepared for the class yet, but he works best off script anyway...right? We had so much fun with this show, answering tech and sponsorships questions is definitely our wheelhouse. Questions Asked On The Show Ford offers a crate have you heard of any series or tracks allowing them? What’s the best fuel in a 604? Was Hendren Racing Engines doing any sponsorship? With alot of 604 engines coming available locally and to use in non spec classes. Are they worth rebuilding with better parts to increase performance power? Yes, we can use any heads, crank, rods & pistons. Are the blocks worth re-using and building a good power plant with? Local 602 rules... MSD 6AN,6ALN or HEI with soft box, all with 6300 limit chip. Which do you suggest? On my new 602 with the factory valve springs. Is it a advantage to replace the new springs for a matched set.. or should I just run the factory set then upgrade later? What do you think the new ct525 bumped rpm to 7500 in Usra mods is going to do to us? Do they make a oil primer on like an oberg to prime the motor with a drill instead of using the starter? In this first episode of Acquisition Talk, Eric Lofgren speaks with guest Victor Deal, who is currently the director of contracts and grants at the Universities Space Research Association, and before that, was an Acquisition Innovation Advocate in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Victor has played an integral role in developing and deploying contracting methods which allow the Government to move quickly, harness new technologies, and bring in firms that traditionally would not have worked with the Government. In this episode, we will talk about innovation in the Department of Defense, and how that relates to Commercial Solutions Openings (CSOs) and Other Transactions Authorities (OTAs). The discussion also addresses the role of the contract officer in an innovative environment, what part trust plays in contracting and culture in acquisition, how the DoD is looking to take advantage of platform concepts from Silicon Valley, and more. We learn about contract proposal evaluation, and why cost realism might not make sense in R&D. Victor tells us how problems that arise when no one is accountable for end-to-end program success. And he addresses what effect the reorganization of the Undersecretary for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics (AT&L) might have on the dreaded "valley of death" problem. We learn about how Victor got his start in the DoD, and what interesting projects are going on at USRA. This podcast was produced by Eric Lofgren. Soundtrack by urmymuse: "reflections of u".
