WorkingNation is in San Diego this week for the 12th annual ASU+GSV Summit, the big three-day convening focused on innovations in education and technology, and their impact on the way we acquire knowledge and skills. My guest on this episode of the Work in Progress podcast is Deborah Quazzo, managing partner of GSV Ventures and the co-founder of ASU+GSV, a collaboration between GSV and Arizona State University (ASU). The way we prepare for our future—the way we learn—has changed just as much as the way we work and the skills we need for a good job. As we've seen over the past 18 months, the adoption of education technology has accelerated as we've had to address the impact of the pandemic on our lives. "We really are here. It is truly the dawn of digital learning," Quazzo tells me in the podcast. "There has been a transformational change in the acceptance of digital learning and scaling solutions that has the opportunity to really make a difference in the lives of millions of people in ways that just had not happened here before, and the attraction of capital into the space is going to drive more and more innovation." The three days of conversation touch on all stages of learning, from "pre-K to gray", as Quazzo describes it. Given the impact of the pandemic on the workforce, many of those discussions zero in on how this ed-tech innovation can help close the skills gap. "It's really about what can this means for the transformation at scale for working adults who desperately need it, who probably even more desperately need it coming out of COVID. "We can finally really look where the puck is going and chase it. While it's hard not to talk about what we've just been through, we're trying to keep a focus on staying on the balls of our feet. How do we take advantage of this? How do we transform things? And how do we use the crisis to transform workforce learning, to transform reskilling, upskilling, higher education, and K-12 education. We're trying to push the conversation that way. "What we really hope is that people walk away feeling like the world really did change, and that learning has really become a centrally important cultural and economic sector and learning is just a critical economic sector for the world." Voices of eLearning brings audiences a wide-ranging interview with one of the biggest proponents of EdTech and education for all. Host JW Marshall welcomed Deborah Quazzo. Quazzo is Managing Partner at GSV Ventures and the Co-Founder of ASU+GSV Summit. Quazzo has been in the space for over 25 years as an investor, philanthropist, and evangelist. “I always thought it was a category that deserved more investment because it was solving real societal challenges. Now seeing it come to fruition is a bit of silver lining of COVID with a rush of capital,” Quazzo said. One of the most important parts of her EdTech career is the Summit, which she founded in cooperation with Arizona State University (ASU). “It's a fantastic partnership, and we've been able to accomplish great things around the transformation of education delivery,” Quazzo shared. The 2020 event was only weeks away when the pandemic hit, which meant a quick pivot and postponement. They did hold the event virtually, welcoming over 15,000 attendees, representing 70% of the world's countries. The central theme—how to improve the delivery of education for all, and technology is moving that forward. There's still work to be done.“We thought we had fixed the digital divide with schools wired, but we didn't solve it at home. Low-income students didn't have devices or bandwidth,” Quazzo said. That's changing, and it took the pandemic to put in more front and center. Moving forward, Quazzo shared she thought the future was hybrid learning, as it could feel the individual learning gaps of all varieties. The landscape of education goes beyond K-12, and some companies are stepping up to make this happen. “We need to educate the 70% of the population that doesn't have a college degree. They don't necessarily need a degree but some sort of skill mastery to maintain economic relevance. All people deserve access to the future.”
Does Purpose help the bottom line? It’s a fair question, surely—maybe, ultimately, the best question we can really ask ourselves in business as the idea of a move away from purely shareholder capitalism to stakeholder capitalism takes off. And while we do need to ask CEOs of Purpose-driven companies that question, perhaps the ideal community to seek a hard-nosed answer here is the VC (venture capitalist) world, for whom the conditio sine qua non of an investment has to be that it will pay back, at multiples. Luckily for us on Season 7 and all our now fast-interlocking conversations on our central question of ‘Is Purpose Working?’ is that today, we have the definitive answer: yes—in fact, it’s actually only the companies that have Purpose that end up with strong cultures and stronger outcomes. There’s a lot to take in to see why our guest, Deborah Quazzo, Managing Partner at GSV Ventures, an early stage venture capital fund investing in education and workforce technology entrepreneurs, is so convinced of that fact, but we hope we have intrigued you enough to listen in to see her logic and proof… but it’s also just such a pleasure to listen to the fusion of a deeply ethical mindset and razor-sharp thinking Deborah brings to her job. Just one example among many: her rhetorical question about why she does what she does: Is it more fun to go call on a company making breakfast cereal, or on a company that’s really trying to change people’s lives meaningfully? Deborah and her team have been active for many years disrupting the $6 trillion education technology sector, having helped amazing names like ClassDojo, Degreed, and RaiseMe, among many others, get out of the lab. Equally important to her, as you’re about to hear, is her work on the annual ASU GSV Summit: now in its 11th year, the Summit celebrates innovations and innovators across the global “preK to Gray” learning and talent landscape and this COVID, virtual year attracted a quite staggering 33,000 online attendees. So tune in now to hear how this predominantly Chicago-based ed tech sector investment ninja has been putting ‘Purpose’ as one of the ‘5 Ps’ a startup has to have before she even looks at them. Before we get started, two callouts are needed: one, to our on-going Season 7 partners, Dani and Stacia over at Purpose-driven HR advisory group RedThread Research, and most especially to our Season sponsors, ed tech luminaries NovoEd, who are just as keen as we are to find an answer to ‘Is Purpose Working?’ Don’t forget that in early 2021, the issues Deborah raises today will be under the microscope in our planned special live, online gated experience, where we will debate all the Learnings from Season 7. If you doubt that Purpose is good for capitalism, then make sure you can get in your two cents about it by locking-in your free place at the webinar. How can I do that, Chris? I hear you say. It’s easy: click on over to the special NovoEd microsite supporting the project, www.novoed.com/purpose. All done? Great—so let’s hear about VC money, Purpose, diversity and what a VC does, as well as: how Deborah sees a coming together of all parts of Education and workplace training; the emergence of knowledge as a ‘currency’; why what GSV does is not the same as what an impact fund tries to do; that significant 2019 Business Round Table statement… are we actually seeing enough action by companies? How Learning is starting (at last?) to be seen as an important weapon by corporate leaders to improve overall outcomes; her conviction that exponential growth in an ed tech company will come not just through great technology, but through diverse teams; what inspired her to get into the ed tech area; and much more.
