Today we welcome Debra Soh, Marco Del Giudice, and Buck Angel.Dr. Debra Soh is a neuroscientist who specializes in gender, sex, and sexual orientation. She holds a PhD in neuroscience with scientific expertise in paraphilias, hypersexuality, and child sexual abuse prevention. As a journalist, her writing has appeared in several publications like the New York Post, the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and many more. In 2020, she published her first book called “The End of Gender”.Dr. Marco Del Giudice is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. He received his bachelors in psychology and doctorate in cognitive science from the University of Turin in Italy. He has over a hundred scientific publications on personality, motivation, attachment styles, psychopathology, sex differences, and other topics. In 2016 he was granted the Early Career Award of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society (HBES).Buck Angel is an adult-film producer, performer and motivational speaker who also works as an advocate, educator, lecturer and writer. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance from 2010 to 2016. Born as a biological female, Buck conquered a lifetime of adversity to undergo his transformation to become the healthy, happy, self-confident man that he is today. Buck created the first FTM adult website in 2003, and became the first FTM adult entertainer and film producer. In 2007, Buck made history again as the first transexual man to ever win the AVN transexual performer of the year award. In this episode, I talk to Debra, Marco, and Buck about the scientific realities of biological sex. There is considerable opposition against the idea that sex is binary. But denying science because it doesn't seem to fit our gender beliefs can be dangerous. As ironic as it seems, when we acknowledge biology, we can accommodate more variation better than our preconceived, rigid social norms.Website: drdebrasoh.com , marcodg.net , buckangel.comTwitter: @DrDebraSoh & @BuckAngel Topics04:08 Dr. Marco's background and expertise 06:41 Dr. Debra's background and expertise07:48 Buck's background and expertise10:02 Shift from ‘transexual' to ‘transgender' 12:35 The separation of sex and gender21:33 Why feminists reject biology27:27 “It is transphobic to deny biology”30:51 Extreme trans activism 40:00 Transgenders vs TERFs43:07 Being gender fluid is trendy44:18 Losing the nuances in gender47:49 The evolutionary perspective of traits55:05 Dismantling the definition of woman58:46 De-transitioning and safe healthcare1:07:03 The construction of gender identity1:14:25 Social transitioning through pronouns1:22:32 Non-binary and non-specific labels1:28:42 Prioritizing truth over feelings

We've all at some point heard about or felt some flavor of imposter syndrome. That feeling where you are quite certain you don't belong and you're moments away from everyone figuring out you're a fraud. And after talking with today's guest, I'm more convinced than ever that hint of doubt, that nagging imposter syndrome, is actually a really good thing. Our guest today is Ping Del Giudice, Vice President of Revenue Operations at Leapsome. Ping was recently named to The Top 100 Revenue Operations Leaders of 2022, and still, even she has her own version of imposter syndrome. In our conversation, we talk about losing all of your institutional knowledge when you leave your job, the inherit vs. build decisions you have to make on a new team, and the major project she found herself signing up for on just her second day on the job.Like this episode? On this episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast, I am chatting with Nico Del Giudice of Molecule VFX, who has recently been working as VFX Supervisor on true-crime drama 'Dr. Death', which is currently airing on Starzplay UK and Peacock in the USA.Based on the podcast of the same name, 'Dr. Death' is inspired by the true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch, played in the show by Joshua Jackson, a rising star in the Dallas medical community who was building a flourishing neurosurgery practice when everything suddenly changed. Patients entered his operating room for complex but routine spinal surgeries but left permanently maimed or dead. As victims piled up, two fellow physicians, neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), as well as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb), set out to stop him.You would expect with a show like this that most of the VFX work would be recreating and emphasise the horror aspect of the doctor's gristly operations. However, due to the schedule changes cause by the pandemic, a lot of Molecule's work shifted to having to alter seasons, "greening" trees, and over 170 other invisible blending effects.Along with Nico's work on 'Dr. Death', in the interview we also chat about some of Nico's other projects. This includes the wonderfully bonkers adaptation of Grant Morrison's comic book 'Happy', which featured the titular cartoon blue unicorn, the superb 'Billions' starring Damien Lewis and Paul Giamatti, CBS's 'Elementary', and the Apple TV+ Sesame Workshop series 'Helpsters'.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown.

What most people don’t expect from someone in finance is a focus on conscious wealth generation and creating more change around the world by way of picking projects with intention. Meet Antonio Del Giudice: an investor, consultant, coach and philanthropist. He was raised in a quaint, urban city in Northern Italy. He was well-adjusted child but a thinker, curious, quiet, lived in his own ‘little’ world and found he never really fit in….all of which has been instrumental in helping him forge my own path while relying on my inner compass, voice and what I deem to be meaningful impact-driven work. He was drawn to the finance world when he won a fully paid sponsorship by the Enrico Mattei Foundation; this act of contribution and kindness left an impression on him. He knew whenever he’d be in a similar position, he would do the same for someone else. His studies and career have taken him to different corners of the world working in capital markets and investment banking in France, Italy, the US, and the UK before deciding to quit the corporate life to open my own consulting and coaching firm out of Dubai. In his work he explores a wide range of topics at the intersection of human behavior, evolution, and development. His approach is interdisciplinary and driven by the quest for theoretical synthesis. Over the years he has developed some broad, integrative models: the Adaptive Calibration Model of individual differences in stress responsivity (with Bruce Ellis and Birdie Shirtcliff); an evolutionary-developmental model of sex differences in attachment styles; and a unifying life history framework for evolutionary psychopathology. Most of his current empirical work is devoted to testing, advancing, and refining these models with a variety of research methods. He's the author of Evolutionary Psychopathology: A Unified Approach. In this episode, we focus on psychological gender differences. We talk about play in males and females; differences in education and occupational choices, according to personality tendencies; assessing sex differences and similarities; gender stereotypes, and if they are right; the distinction between “sex” and “gender”, and if it is a useful one; evolutionary and socialization theories of sex differences; things that people from the socialization side get wrong about evolutionary psychology; animal models, and comparative psychology; and, finally, why it is important, not only for scientists but also to the general public, to study and learn about sex differences.

Then we get into topics related to human development, like the canalization of developmental processes, motivational systems, and attachment styles. We also talk about behavioral genetics and differential susceptibility. Dr. Del Giudice explains the central approach to a new system of classification for mental disorders that he exposes in the book, the fast-slow-defense model (FSD). Toward the end, we also discuss the several different difficulties in classifying mental disorders. -- Follow Dr. Del Giudice's work: Faculty page: http://bit.ly/33TOSL7 Personal website: https://marcodg.net/ ResearchGate profile: http://bit.ly/2zgDbAn Evolutionary Psychopathology: A Unified Approach: https://amzn.to/2ZbilSn -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, SCIMED, PER HELGE HAAKSTD LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, RUI BELEZA, ANTÓNIO CUNHA, CHANTEL GELINAS, JERRY MULLER, FRANCIS FORDE, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, YEVHEN BODRENKO, SERGIU CODREANU, ADAM BJERRE, AIRES ALMEIDA, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, BO WINEGARD, VEGA GIDEY, CRAIG HEALY, OLAF ALEX, PHILIP KURIAN, JONATHAN VISSER, DAVID DIAS, ANJAN KATTA, JAKOB KLINKBY, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, AND JOHN CONNORS!
[Content note: eating disorders] Anorexia has a cultural component. I’m usually reluctant to assume anything is cultural – every mediocre social scientist’s first instinct is always to come up with a cultural explanation which is simple, seductive, flattering to all our existing prejudices, and wrong. But after seeing enough ballerinas and cheerleaders who became anorexic after pressure to lose weight for the big competition, even I have to throw up my hands and admit anorexia has a cultural component. But nobody ever tells you the sequel. That ballerina who’s losing weight for the big competition at age 16? At age 26, she’s long since quit ballet, worried it would exacerbate her anorexia. She’s been in therapy for ten years; for eight of them she’s admitted she has a problem, that her anorexia is destroying her life. Her romantic partners – the ones she was trying to get thin to impress – have long since left her because she looks skeletal and weird. She understands this and would do anything to cure her anorexia and be a normal weight again. But she finds she isn’t hungry. She hasn’t eaten in two days and she isn’t hungry. In fact, the thought of food sickens her. She goes to increasingly expert therapists and dieticians, asking them to help her eat more. They recommend all the usual indulgences: ice cream, french fries, cookies. She tries all of them and finds them inexplicably disgusting. Sometimes with a prodigious effort of will she will manage to finish one cookie, and congratulate herself, but the next day she finds the task of eating dessert as daunting as ever. Finally, after many years of hard work, she is scraping the bottom end of normal weight by keeping to a diet so regimented it would make a Prussian general blush. And nobody ever tells you about all the people who weren’t ballerinas. The young man who stops eating because it gives him a thrill of virtue and superiority to be able to demonstrate such willpower. The young woman who stops eating in order to show her family how much their neglect hurts her. If they pursue their lack of appetite far enough, they end up the same way as the ballerina – admitting they have a problem, admitting they need to eat more, hiring all sorts of doctors and dieticians to find them a way to eat more, but discovering themselves incapable of doing so.

On Second Thought: Learned Women Reflect on Profession, Community, and Purpose (University of Utah Press, 2017) is a collection of thirteen essays by women, all in the second half of their lives, in which they contemplate the ways in which the different facets of their identities—personal, professional and spiritual—have hitherto unfolded and intertwined. Among their number is the folklorist, ethnographer, oral historian, and prolific independent scholar Luisa Del Giudice, who is also the editor of the volume and the driving force behind it. The seed for the book began some years ago, when a career crisis led Del Giudice to question many aspects of her life. In the process, she developed an acute awareness of its often fragmented nature, a fragmentation exacerbated, if not caused, by an academic establishment that tends to looks askance on its members bringing any aspect of their personal lives, still less their spiritual beliefs, into their work. Del Giudice decided to push back against the resulting dichotomous state, which effectively pits the pursuit of knowledge (academia) against the pursuit of wisdom (spirituality). She contacted a number of women, most of whom she knew personally, and asked if they would be willing to provide written reflections on their lives to date often complex and multifaceted lives that encompassed a range of personal and professional identities. She encouraged each to describe how their existence has accrued meaning and purpose, as well as any spiritual leanings underpinning that process. The result is a kind of textual “Wise Women’s Circle.” It includes four folklorists (aside from Del Giudice herself, there is Mary Ellen Brown, Sabina Magliocco, and Christine Zinni) along with contributors whose professional backgrounds embrace a range of other scholarly disciplines, as well as practitioners of law, medicine, public health, and art. The spiritual and cultural leanings expressed are similarly diverse and include Catholicism, Paganism, Episcopalianism, Jungian Psychology, Judaism and Zen Buddhism. The paths of the women have often been shaped by societal and cultural expectations and institutional constraints. Despite the singular nature of each essay, a number of recurring themes emerge, not least the importance of cultural heritage, the challenges of combining a professional role with that of a domestic caregiver, workplace side-lining, the power of story-telling, and, perhaps most notably, an ongoing experience of existing within a creative, albeit uncomfortable, state of betwixt and betweeness. Del Giudice describes the contributors as “masters of bricolage and diverse resources who find meaning in lonely marginalized places, who struggle to weave together disparate aspects of life to make them meaningful” (23). All can speak to lessons learned, rewards gained, and the critical need for women’s voices to be heard. Overall, this collection is designed to inspire its readers to examine their own lives, to help them clarify their own sense of purpose, and then commit to fulfilling it, despite the obstacles which will surely arise. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
In Professor Angela Duckworth’s TED talk (https://www.ted.com/talks/angela_lee_duckworth_grit_the_power_of_passion_and_perseverance) , she says of her research: “One characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success. And it wasn’t social intelligence. It wasn’t good looks, physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. It was grit.” The effusive blurbs on the book cover go even beyond Professor Duckworth’s own dramatic pronouncements: Daniel Gilbert, the author of Stumbling on Happiness, says: “Psychologists have spent decades searching for the secret of success, but Duckworth is the one who has found it…She not only tells us what it is, but how to get it.” Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The power of introverts in a world that can’t stop talking (which we’ve looked at previously in an episode on supporting your introverted child (https://yourparentingmojo.com/introversion/) ) says: “Impressively fresh and original…Grit scrubs away preconceptions about how far our potential can take us…Buy this, send copies to your friends, and tell the world that there is, in fact, hope. We can all dazzle.” Don’t we all want to dazzle? Don’t we all want our children to dazzle? Is grit the thing that will help them do it? It turns out that Professor Duckworth’s own research says: perhaps not. Listen in to learn how much grit is a good thing, how to help your child be grittier, and why it might not be the factor that assures their success.
