For international women's day, we spoke with two academics of colour about their experiences of being minority women in academia.   Henrika McCoy is the Ruby Lee Piester Centennial Fellow in Services to Children and Families and associate professor at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin. Henrika shares her experience of colleagues and students having erroneous expectations about her scholarship and background because she is a Black female academic. Zes gesprekken over de (on)overbrugbare kloof tussen oost en west. Met zes nationale én internationale gasten. Over de verhoudingen in Europa, die door de Russische oorlog in Oekraïne op z'n kop gezet. Met als derde Perestroj-gast: schrijver Sana Valiulina, opgegroeid Estland, gestudeerd in Moskou en in 1989 vertrokken naar Nederland. "Europa, word wakker." De Russische oorlog in Oekraïne bevindt zich op een belangrijk ijkpunt, zegt Valiulina, nu er oorlogsmoeheid  in Europa optreedt en West-Europa toch denkt aan de portemonee van de burgers. Het is opnieuw de kloof tussen Oost- West-Europa die zich toch weer opent. "Juist nu moeten de regeringen van Europese landen heel goed aan hun bevolking duidelijk moeten maken om echt door te zetten om Oekraïne te steunen."  In dit gesprek praten Geert Jan en Floris met Sana Valiulina over de rol van haar vader in haar leven, de relaties binnen Europa, de Russische dreiging voor Estland, waarom ze vertrok naar het Westen koos en of je wel moet praten met Vladimir Poetin. Het Westen had beter kunnen weten. Áls het had geluisterd naar Toomas Hendrik Ilves. De president van Estland van 2006 tot en met 2016 waarschuwde het Westen  voor Poetin en zijn imperialistische ambities. Maar Berlijn, Parijs en Den Haag luisterden niet  "Je kunt de Russen niet vertrouwen", meent Valiulina. "Poetin komt uit de veiligheidsdienst. Eens een KGB'er, altijd een KGB'er." Het waren economische belangen, desinteresse en fixatie op de Verenigde Staten die  West-Europa de ogen deden sluiten voor wat er in Rusland gebeurde, stelt Valiulina vast. Valiulina, opgegroeid in de Sovjet-Unie, in Estland, keek altijd al naar het Westen. Dat werd haar door haar vader op het hart gedrukt. Als krijgsgevangene tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog belandde hij in Frankrijk en Engeland om later gedwongen terug te keren naar de Sovjet-Unie. Hij nam zijn Westerse indrukken mee en bracht die over op zijn dochter.  Ze zag de Russische invasie niet aankomen en sindsdien leeft Valiulina tussen hoop en vrees. "Mijn geestestoestand is vrij wankelmoedig." Sana Valiulina (1946) schreef onder andere Didar en Faroek, Kinderen van Brezjnev en het essay Wortel en tak. Je kunt haar boeken hier bestellen. Annemieke Bosman praat met schrijfster Sana Valiulina. Het verhaal van haar familie wordt verteld in de film Turn your body to the sun, die vanaf donderdag in de bioscoop te zien is.  In de film Turn your body to the sun van regisseur Aliona van der Horst onderzoekt Sana Valiulina het verleden van haar stille, ondoorgrondelijke vader, die tien jaar in een stafkamp van Stalin heeft gezeten. Met intieme brieven, dagboeken en unieke kleurbeelden uit deo orlog wordt een zowel een persoonlijk als een universeel verhaal verteld, dat nog steeds diepe sporen achterlaat. Sana Valiulina (Estland, 1964) groeide op in Tallinn in een gezin van niet-religieuze islamitische Tataren. Ze studeerde Noorse taal- en letterkunde in Moskou en verhuisde in 1989 naar Amsterdam. In 2000 verscheen haar debuutroman Het Kruis, over het leven in een studentenflat in Moskou. In 2002 volgde de novellebundel Vanuit nergens met liefde. Voor haar monumentale epos Didar en Faroek(2006), over WOII en de nasleep daarvan in de Sovjet-Unie werd ze genomineerd voor de Libris Literatuur Prijs. Dit liefdesverhaal over twee mensen die door oorlog en terreur van elkaar gescheiden worden maar elkaar uiteindelijk toch weer weten te vinden, is deels gebaseerd op haar eigen familiegeschiedenis.Meer recent publiceerde ze Kinderen van Brezjnev (2014) gevolgd door Winterse Buien: of ben ik wel geïntegreerd genoeg? (2016) en Root and Branch (2021) waarin ze de sporen van haar vader volgde.

The COVID crisis catalyzed the efforts of Dr. Leyla Soleymani and Dr. Tohid Didar. They knew they had something great with their RepelWrap, and now were presented with a real opportunity to make a societal impact with it. [5:12] The focus on nanotechnology in Leyla and Tohid’s research include SLIPS, slippery liquid-infused porous substances, which are smooth and self-healing. Their inspiration was the pitcher plant, which can lure and trap their prey using their modified leaves and wax that makes the surface very smooth and slippery. This is a perfect example of biomimicry, the production of systems or structures that copy features we find in nature, and using what we learn from the natural world to bring it into innovation and modern technology. [8:42] The implementation of biological features that we can borrow from the natural world could be endless. For example, Velcro was inspired by the spiny hooks on the Burdock plant, and swimsuits after microscopic scales on shark skin. [9:48] In the lab, Leyla and Tohid had the help of a talented grad student who concluded that the RepelWrap needed another layer of structure in order to achieve oil repellency. Then, once they had these three layers, they needed to see how it would perform in the lab when tested, but the challenge was finding the lab space and resources in the middle of a deadly pandemic. [11:56] After adapting their research to real-life applications against MRSA and E. coli, the team got more and more proof that it worked, and that became more appealing to others. To prove that their product would be effective against COVID-19. Unfortunately, the results were inconclusive, but, they will run the test again and again, as this is crucial to how we accumulate data and fact-based knowledge. [16:48] Tohid and Leyla explain why communication in science is critical. There is a captive audience in almost every taxi ride or public interaction, where someone can learn more about the innovation that universities are doing, instead of just thinking the focus is solely on putting out academic papers. [18:35] The process of scientific discovery, like the process of bringing a product to market, requires testing and iteration. Business has a lot to gain from science, not just in terms of innovation and invention, but learning new ways of thinking and how we see the world and the dispassionate gathering of evidence to provide a product's efficacy. [19:39] There is a very interesting possibility in materials science — a bacterium working like a construction team. It may sound like science fiction, but this is what makes the future very exciting. [20:11] Leyla and Tohid hope to get RepelWrap in high touch areas in hospitals such as elevator buttons and the railings of patient beds to protect patients and health care workers. In this episode of DCHT Deborah had a candid sit down with DR Didar Sohia a Security Consultant and all round tech enthusiast. In the episode we had a lovely chat about his diverse career and academic background in the UK and US. This one in my opinion is great episode to listen check out, especially if you are into challenging status quo and evolving academically and in the working world. The strongest take home from Didar is his wealth of knowledge in the tech industry, turning down studying at Oxford University, gaining scholarships to study in the US and changing his course form Architecture to Electrical and Computer Engineering. Didar’s interest is also in getting minorities and women into tech and really advices that communication is key to help you get from A to B and on how to navigate your way in a conversation where you will command lucrative actions. On DCHT Didar advocates and encourages listeners to invest in self learning, using YouTube to get the basics and to learn, that you don’t need certain traditional skills that may deter you to take the leap into tech. It is about pushing yourself and learn, learn even if means allocating 1hr a day on learning about a specific topic. Didar suggests that attending university in Nashville to study (academic as a whole) aided him to be much more confident and developed his social skills.

Didar Samaletdin kan titta tillbaka på ett helt liv som svensk muslim. Hon växte upp i den första muslimska församlingen i Sverige och minns hur det var när det bara var en mindre grupp av muslimer här. Islam och muslimer har funnits i Sverige under lång tid. Men det är först på 1900 talet som lite större grupper organiserade sig i föreningar och församlingar. Didar Samaletdin kom till Sverige 1944 som ettåring. Hennes familj är muslimska tatarer med rötter i Ryssland. Didar Samaledtins pappa Ali Zakerov blev ordförande i den första muslimska församlingen i Sverige: Turkislam föreningen för religion och kultur. Didar berättar att hennes uppväxt inte var särskilt religiös och att hon som ung kvinna väckte uppmärksamhet eftersom hon inte bar slöja.
