Nestled in the Howardian Hills of ‘God's own country' of Yorkshire, something extraordinary is happening at Vanbrugh's great English Baroque masterpiece, Castle Howard. Famed for its seminal role in Brideshead Revisited and Bridgerton, for 75 years, an entire wing of Castle Howard has remained a burnt-out shell after fire ravaged the house in 1940.But in recent years, Castle Howard's current custodian - Nick Howard - and his wife Victoria, have overseen a remarkable 21st century renaissance, bringing in the country's best architects, designers and craftsmen to begin the monumental task of returning these burnt-out rooms to their former glory.Joining Geoff and Rory on the podcast this week, Nick Howard discusses the decision making process behind this revival, and talks us through the renovation journey. The results are a triumph, and testify to Nick and Victoria's dedication to Castle Howard and their desire to secure its future for many generations to come.

Evelyn Waugh's seventh and certainly most famous novel is, as a reading experience, more like a baroque building than a book. One does not so much read “Brideshead Revisited” as enter it. We wander its dynastic halls and marvel at its dynamic details, but most of all we seek out its inhabitants, that eclectic cast of characters. And yet, perhaps what is most enduring about “Brideshead” is that it pays revisiting; like its great themes, each reading renovates our memory and reveals the underlying truth that change “is the only evidence of life.” Some of the books and authors discussed in this episode include: “Brideshead Revisited” by Evelyn Waugh “Play is as it Lays” by Joan Didion “Ghana Must Go” by Taiye Selasi Additional segments throughout the podcast include: Inner Shelf Fact or fiction What are you reading?

With Kirsty Lang. Charles Sturridge, the director of the landmark TV series Brideshead Revisited, discusses his latest project, a TV adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's The Scapegoat, a tale of two identical looking men who swap lives. He also reflects on how television drama has changed since the days of Brideshead. Iraq war veteran Kevin Powers has drawn on his own experiences in his novel The Yellow Birds, the story of a young recruit sent to Iraq's Nineveh Province in 2004, and his struggle to adapt to civilian life on his return. Kevin reveals the frequently asked question that was the starting point for the book. Not since the invention of sound cinema have silent movies been so popular, partly due to the unexpected Oscar success of The Artist. This week sees two new films which pay homage to the silent era - Tabu, which has no dialogue in its last half hour and takes its name from a famous F W Murnau drama, and a Spanish adaptation of Snow White which looks like it's been made in the 1920s and not the 21st century. Historian Matthew Sweet and silent film accompanist and composer Neil Brand explain why we've learned to stop worrying and love silent cinema The Art of Chess is a new exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery which brings together 16 chess sets designed by some of the world's leading contemporary artists, including Jake and Dinos Chapman, Rachel Whiteread, Damien Hirst and Tim Noble and Sue Webster. Each set is individually crafted in a wide variety of different materials including wood, porcelain, glass, amber and silver. Scotland's strongest chess Grandmaster Jonathan Rowson reviews. Producer Erin Riley.

There comes a time when people make mistakes. Even the Great Big Bird of Sesame Street fame or didn't you have Big Bird Sings when you were a child. Such was the case with Matt Cox last week when he unwittingly sent Fred Brideshead 3 for the final editing. Because of this and to keep the story current you're getting two episodes this week plus a Graham Green thriller from Fred. More about these in a moment but first a poll question. We open by asking you how you feel about different lengths of the show each week or two? Reason is BBC has so many 90 minute productions out we're holding back when we're not sharing. So would you mind some 90 minute plays? If so would you still mind if the other host plays an hour or would you rather see us keep to our two hour format? The neat thing about podcasts you can pause us if you need to. Please please please email us at brunch@london.com and let us know what you think. We'll keep discussing this as the answers come in and we thank you in advance for participating. When you email let us know who you are and where you're listening. I'm loving the hits and we'd love to know more a bit more about you and your favorite BBC programs. Even if you know nothing about the BBC and are learning from us let us know. Meanwhile this week. sSorry about the latenes. And the mistake. Perhaps it was the chocolate or the champagne or the strawberries as Heather and I relaxed in the desert. But if you want to know where we were vissit http://www.marriott.com/ctdca and take a look. Anyway you'll get Brideshead 2 and 3 this week from March 16 and 23 2003 followed by Graham Green's Ministry of Fear. This was originally broadcast on July 7 1973 but Radio 4 made it in to a two part two hour drama. Don't forget to email us your thoughts on 90 minute plays and we look forward to it. Matt and Fred
