Last weekend, the US President Donald Trump signed executive orders placing 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada, which were due to take effect on Tuesday. But at the last minute, the tariffs were postponed, at least for a month. Inevitably, though, the talk of a trade war set nerves jangling at Zona Maco, the art fair in Mexico City, which opened on Wednesday. Ben Luke speaks to Ben Sutton, The Art Newspaper's editor, Americas, who is in the Mexican capital, about the prevailing mood, and about the effect on the art world more generally of some of Trump's executive orders. It is also the India Art Fair in Delhi this week. Our art market editor, Kabir Jhala, is there and tells us more about the fair amid the wider social and political climate in India. And this episode's Work of the Week is Henry Fitz Jr's self-portrait, a daguerreotype, made in January or February 1840. It is thought to be the first photograph of a person made in the United States. It features in a major show at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, American Photography. Episode Twenty-Six features Mexican-French emerging artist Alexis de Chaunac. He was born in New York City and raised in Mexico City and Paris. As a child living in Mexico, he grew up surrounded by his mother’s family and his grandparent’s friends which included Mexican artists, intellectuals, historians, poets, diplomats, and writers. These brilliant minds had a profound impact on Alexis at an early age and as a result he draws from subjects such as literature, religion, art history and politics which overlap with his interests that include natural sciences, biology and botany. In April 2019, he exhibited at Sargent’s Daughters Gallery in New York. Alexis has also exhibited through group and solo shows in major museums in Mexico (Museo Carrillo Gil, Pinacoteca Diego Rivera) and at Zona MACO art fair in Mexico City. After receiving his BA from Sarah Lawrence College, Alexis is currently pursuing his MFA in the Painting and Drawing department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Below are several links about Alexis de Chaunac’s work and those that influenced him as a child. Also included is the Jerry Saltz New York Magazine story stating that the exhibition “Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art, 1925–1945” at the Whitney Museum was one of the most relevant shows of the 21st century. Finishing February on a high, we're back with another art-filled episode. Exhibition highlights include France-Lise McGurn at Simon Lee Gallery, '9th St. Club' at Gazelli Art House, and a sculptural double-billing at Lisson Gallery in the form of Richard Deacon and Tony Cragg. We were saddened to hear of the closure of commercial power-house Blain Southern. Known for representing the likes of Jake and Dinos Chapman, Mat Collishaw, and Sean Scully, the gallery announced its closure of all three spaces this month following the departure of co-founder Graham Southern in late 2019. We dissect what went wrong and what it means for the art world. And from the sad to the ridiculous, we couldn't pass by the story of the disgruntled art critic who accidentally destroyed an artwork she openly disliked at Zona Maco fair in Mexico. Finally, breaking from tradition our Artist Focus is actually a group: the Women Impressionists. We welcome the long-overdue attention given to the female artists who contributed to famous art movements, and this episode we celebrate two key Impressionists: Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt. Christopher Albert, host of The Junk and Jam Hour, every Monday, 2pm on Radio Free Brooklyn, fills in for me as I am on a boondoggle in Mexico City visiting art fairs such as Zona Maco and Material. In the meantime. Christopher takes on on his own journey exploring mental health. More about Christopher Albert: Armed with an acquired wit and intelligence that was born from the streets of NYC, Christopher Albert, also once an inhabitant of Los Angeles, is set to emerge as one of the funniest, charming, yet eccentric writers and humorists of our day. Though Christopher has produced content for Fortune 500 companies and small businesses alike, his true talents are rooted in entertainment and comedy. Christopher has had the unique opportunity to study the craft of humor with the best: instructors from the famed Comedy Store and Second City Hollywood, as well as invaluable insight from veteran comedy writers.  Christopher's brutally honest approach to humor is evident in his litany of fearless content. His works include the writing and production of Junk and Jam, absurdly edgy content, satirically animated graphics, and humorous programming – including the Junk and Jam Hour talk-radio broadcast, and Junk and Jam Live cablecast program. As a performer, Christopher has been afforded opportunities to share his talents on many stages including the historic Apollo Theater, with appearances on the Rosie O' Donnell Show, Billboard Music Awards and features on MTV and PBS. He has also performed on and produced an array of successful live comedy showcases, featured alongside many top comedians. His collection of humorous writings include his novel, The Kettle Black: The Chronicles of Mia and Rocco, and autobiographical short stories for the series, A Crack Baby's Bible. Writer, producer, performer, humorist and host Christopher Albert is humbled by his life's experiences, and believes that humor is much more than just a singular tool used to escape the harsh realities of our world, it actually enriches it. Lisa Lampanelli fondly referred to him as an ‘anal astronaut' Ariana Grande's Dad praised him as a ‘creative professional' …and Mariah Carey once gave him a disingenuous hug.
