In this episode of "Talking Shop with Shop Owner," Doug Kaufman interviews Jason Rainey, VP of NAPA AutoCare and NAPA Autotech, about the NAPA Team Tool Rebate program.Rainey explains that the program is designed to help shop owners attract and retain technicians by providing them with the tools they need to do their jobs. The program works by allowing shop owners to earn rebates on their NAPA parts purchases, which they can then use to purchase tools for their technicians. Shop owners simply buy NAPA parts and NAPA handles the rebate process in the backside, distributing funds that shops can reallocate to their team members. This program isn't just about providing tools, Rainey says, but is also about building a strong culture within the shop. "By giving technicians the tools they need, shop owners can show them that they are valued and appreciated. This can lead to increased job satisfaction and reduced turnover. When you're attracting talent, you're saying, 'because we're partners with NAPA, we're able to do this. And so it really is a rising tide raises all ships kind of thing."Rainey also discusses the NAPA Auto Care Apprentice program, which is designed to help young people enter the automotive repair industry. The program provides apprentices with the training and mentorship they need to succeed. He notes that the program has been very successful, with over 2,000 apprentices currently working in NAPA Auto Care member shops. Rainey highlights the program's competency-based approach, stating, "if they haven't mastered a skillset, they can stay there. There's not the end of the marking period. They can stay there until they're able to master that skill."Rainey explains that NAPA is committed to helping shop owners succeed, offering a variety of programs and services designed to help shop owners attract and retain technicians, improve their operations, and grow their businesses. For more information visit NAPAOnline.com.

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Paul Barattiero. He has lectured across the world over the last 23 years. 12 years ago, he set out to educate the world on the vast benefits of molecular hydrogen. His message has focused on the critical role of molecular hydrogen (H2) in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. His lectures present the causal problem and the solutions through scientific studies. He developed the Echo hydrogen water system as well as other products to modulate immune and cognitive function. Paul has lectured across the world and has been on national television in the USA, Germany, and Switzerland, including Doug Kaufman's television show, Know the Cause. He was featured in “The Truth about Cancer” and has been on radio shows and podcasts worldwide. Paul works diligently to educate individuals on how to prevent disease and no longer suffer. Paul's greatest joys come from serving others. He is passionate about the prevention of pathologies. He founded Synergy Science, Inc. in 2011 and developed a full line of products focused on detoxification, immune boost, and gut recovery. In this episode, Paul Barattiero reveals the pain to purpose story that led him to discover hydrogen water in the first place. Then, Paul dives deep into hydrogen and how hydrogen water can help us optimize our glucose levels. Hydrogen is a powerful selective antioxidant that neutralizes cytotoxic free radicals, helping eliminate oxidative stress and inflammation. Later, Paul answers questions from the Keto Kamp listeners, including how hydrogen water can benefit people with autism, whether or not it's beneficial for our pets, and much more! [02:45] About Paul's Pain To Purpose Story Paul's wife was sick for the first ten years of their marriage. His wife had gynecological issues, her menstrual cycle was horrible, and she was highly anemic. A friend told Paul about this water system that could potentially help people. After Paul's wife tried the water, it changed her whole life. Within a few months, her menstrual cycle changed, and she was no longer anemic. [10:55] Things You Need To Know About Hydrogen Hydrogen is number one on the periodic table. It's a gas that should be produced in your gut. Your body is designed to produce hydrogen gas in your gut when you ferment or digest food. Hydrogen will reduce oxidation. Plus, it gives direction to over 200 biomolecules that have been identified in the body. Every system in the human body is regulated by hydrogen [20:55] How Hydrogen Can Play A Role In Helping Us Optimize Our Glucose Levels Giving hydrogen water to individuals with diabetes will get their blood glucose levels back to normal. Your body puts cholesterol in your veins. When we have too much oxidative stress in our body, our veins will become less elastic. Your body will put cholesterol into the veins where the walls are weak. Hydrogen is able to change oxidative stress and inflammation. Check out Hydrogen Studies: https://www.hydrogenstudies.com/ [28:55] Hydrogen And The Human Body: Why It Matters You are supposed to have hydrogen in the human body to begin with. We should be creating 10 to 12 liters of hydrogen gas per day. You were designed to have a hydrogen generator in your gut. When you take in pesticides, then you're combating your gut function. So, you need the water to be with you daily. Chemicals get into our system; they destroy us as human beings. It all starts with our gut. [33:20] Hydrogen: An Option In Human Disease Treatment Oxidative stress and inflammation is the leading cause of disease. As we convert oxygen into fuel, we create oxygen radicals. Well, our antioxidant system is designed to combat that and keep oxidation in a normal range. When your oxidation is rising, you will have what we call oxidation stress. Oxidation is natural, whereas oxidative stress is unnatural. If you want to live a long time, you have to have a healthy gut. [42:55] How Hydrogen Water Can Support People With Autism Because of gut issues, people with autism are not producing ghrelin secretions. Ghrelin secretions happen either in the stomach or the gastrointestinal tract. When the gut is damaged or not functioning, you don't produce ghrelin. The lack of ghrelin will cause sleep issues and brain issues. Hydrogen water can balance the brain within minutes. When hydrogen water hits the stomach, it will signal ghrelin to go to the brain. [52:45] Should You Give Hydrogen Water To Cats and Dogs? Yes, give your pets hydrogen water. After drinking hydrogen water, animals no longer have kidney and liver issues. Dogs with heart murmurs will live many years longer than expected. Plus, give your dog's meat, not potato chips! Dogs do not eat kibble in the wild. Well, 50% of kibble is sugar and carbs. Pets get cancer simply because of the food that they are eating. [68:30] When Should Hydrogen Water Be Consumed? Drink the hydrogen water within two to five hours. However, if you fill it in a bottle, you'll have two weeks to drink it. Hydrogen water is better when it's chilled. You will fall in love with water all over again. AND MUCH MORE! Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan once said, "Enjoying success requires the ability to adapt. Only by being open to change will you have a true opportunity to get the most from your talent." While it's doubtful the Ryan Express was discussing the future of the automotive aftermarket, his words are just as true for us as they were for himself, as he found himself facing increasingly younger, stronger batters throughout his career. In this episode of Talking Shop with ShopOwner, the Kaufmans continue their analysis of what's to come. Of all the changes this industry has faced over its more than a century of life, that past 40 years have been a whirlwind. We've seen typewriters transition to mainframes to laptops; we've witnessed the eventual embrace of fuel injection and anti-lock brakes; we've seen OBDII and the internet come and pagers and faxes go. Through it all, shop owners have adapted. It's fun to look back at what's changed and consider how much better off we are now – but it's scary to be on the other side of the curve, looking forward, trying to predict what's coming next over the horizon. In this episode, Doug Kaufman, editor of ShopOwner grills Derek Kaufman, managing partner at Schwartz Advisors about what we can expect in the automotive industry in the future. As it turns out, that future is both closer and more amazing than you may imagine.Talking Shop With ShopOwner is sponsored by AAPEX, the premier automotive industry networking and educational event. For years, many automotive professionals feared the growing presence of electric vehicles because of the possibility that they meant fewer service opportunities. Since it's now becoming clear that EVs will still require much of the traditional maintenance and repair found in conventional vehicles, shops are embracing the technology. With electric vehicles, potentially accounting for 40% of total passenger car sales by 2030, the time is now to equip the people working on these vehicles for the road ahead, especially since drivers are keeping their cars on the road longer. They're not going away and shop owners and technicians will need to know how to do jobs - even traditional service and maintenance work - efficiently and safely. From training to tooling, the requirements to work on EVs are more critical than ever. Increased production and the push to adopt EVs has been a long time coming, but are the technicians who service these vehicles and keep them on the road ready for the change? In this episode of Talking Shop With ShopOwner, Doug Kaufman talks with Susan Starnes, Vice President of Emerging Markets with NAPA and Jake Sorensen, a NAPA Auto Care technician at McNeil's Autocare in Sandy and Riverton, UT, who explain why addressing the challenges before they're a problem is the best way for shops to prepare for the coming influx of electric vehicles. This episode is sponsored by AAPEX.
On this second Sunday of the summer series focusing on creation care, Doug Kaufman brought the message. Doug will be taking on the role of executive director of the Anabaptist Climate Collaborative and has been an environmental activist, along with being a pastor. Doug preached from Genesis 1:2-3 and Jeremiah 4:23-28. He spoke of the incredible biodiversity loss we have experienced throughout the world. It's in noting these distressing realities of our current climate situation that we can find the compost out of which will grow our action and our hope.

Yet, as a coach or player, you know you need a great game plan to get to the next level. It's no different with your business. When you've done all you can do to help your team be successful, it's up to them to execute your X's and O's. Sometimes, a timeout will be required to get things back on track. In this episode of Talking Shop with ShopOwner, Doug Kaufman talks with Vic Tarasik about the efforts a good coach puts in before the game starts so that mid-course corrections aren't devastating to your business. Hopefully we all do vehicle inspections – and hopefully, most of those are digital inspections. And, with constantly evolving advances in technology, those inspections are producing amazing images. Those pictures are telling the story your customer needs to hear in ways that words alone can't begin to explain.Whether it's between technicians, or the service advisor and customers, or technicians and the shop owner, communication is key to a successful day and a successful shop. But with increased communication hurdles is what you are saying really what's being understood? According to Rod Stewart, "every picture tells a story, don't it?"A DVI is like a three step support mechanism for, one, connecting with customers and showing them the importance of the repairs you recommend with. Two, visual proof of why it should be done. And three, showing the quality of the pair once it's done. Offering customers a log of pictures also helps them to see for themselves how the parts wear over time. This both educates your customer and also builds their trust in your shop. Likely they'll be more open to the repairs you recommend following those photos. But just having the pictures isn't the end of the story. In this episode of Talking Shop with ShopOwner, editor Doug Kaufman has a conversation with Vic Tarasik from Shop Owner Coach and Greg Buckley, from Buckley's Autocare in Wilmington, DE.The trio discuss not only why a DVI is the best way to inspect every car, but what tools are required, how they should be conducted and what you can do with the information once you've captured it.This episode of Talking Shop with Shop Owner is sponsored by AAPEX. Science fiction and Hanna-Barbera promised us all sorts of fantastic things to make our lives easier - moving sidewalks, robot maids, mind-reading appliances and flying cars should have BEEN here by now. As it turns out, The Jetsons were only PARTLY ahead of the game. What's the most important thing you're looking for in your automotive repair facility today? Some might say more customers, some might answer faster technicians, some might say higher repair orders. All of these are important factors, but they're not mutually exclusive. Today we're here to discuss one resource that can possibly help you solve all three dilemmas - perhaps foreshadowed by science fiction cartoons. It seems like 40 or 50 years ago, artificial intelligence meant robots, and that was either scary or totally comedic depending on your generation. They were never really considered a partner – but we've come to rely on artificial intelligence to assist us in many aspects of our daily lives, so much so that we don't even think about it anymore. In this episode of Shop Owner Solutions, Doug Kaufman, editor of ShopOwner magazine talks about the ways artificial intelligence can make a real difference in your shop's personality, productivity and profitability. His guest is Eric Turkington, Vice President of Growth at Ortho, creators of shop-specific artificial intelligence resources.
There is justified concern about the future of this industry, and specifically, who's going to be around to fix vehicles when that trusted local mechanic retires his wrenches. Some fear that no one is interested or able to step into the gap. In this episode of Talking Shop with ShopOwner, Doug Kaufman talks with Mike Wiant from the Ohio Tech Group. Mike has an innovative way of creating excitement about this industry and is on a mission to inspire the next generation of technician. This episode of Talking Shop with ShopOwner is sponsored by AAPEX, the premier automotive industry networking and educational event. This week on Integrative Cancer Solutions with Dr. Karlfeldt, we're discussing the link between cancer and fungi. Dr. Doug Kaufmann discusses his book, "The Germ That Causes Cancer", which discusses the topic in more detail. He talks about how common fungal infections are, and how they can often be mistaken for other illnesses. He also describes a study in which autopsies were conducted on cancer patients and it was found that many of them had a fungal problem.- Doug Kaufman's journey in helping people understand that there are many facets to cancer, not just one- How the Doug became interested in mycology- How Doug believes that fungus is a root cause of cancer- The importance of antifungal medications and diets in treating patients with various symptoms- How cancer is caused by fungi and how it can be treated with diet and supplements KEY POINTS Approximately mentioned @ 00:01:22Doug Kaufman has been engaged in many public ways to raise awareness about cancer, such as writing books and hosting a TV show. Approximately mentioned @ 00:06:24Kaufmann describes how he discovered the link between fungus and various medical conditions. He also talks about how antifungal medications and diet can help treat these conditions. Approximately mentioned @ 00:11:50The mold penicillium produces the mycotoxin penicillin, which is a known carcinogen. Antibiotics are mycotoxins and can cause cancer. Mycotoxins are prevalent in people who eat fast foods and cereals, don't get very good nutrition, who live in a moldy home and inhale mold all the time, who drink alcohol. Approximately mentioned @ 00:21:57Kaufmann's diet advises against consuming carbohydrates, as they provide nourishment for fungi. However, he has recently changed his stance on this after learning that some mushrooms can actually help heal people with fungal infections. Approximately mentioned @ 00:33:12In essence, cancer is a hybrid of human and fungal cells, created through a process of genetic fusion. This makes it difficult to distinguish between cancer and fungus using traditional methods, but there are some key differences. For example, cancer cells thrive in anoxic environments, while fungi cannot. Additionally, antifungals can be used to annihilate tumor growth. Approximately mentioned @ 00:41:36The Germ That Causes Cancer is a book that discusses the fusion between fungi and human DNA, and how this can alter genetic expression to cause cancer. Think your job is challenging enough just working with your friends and employees? Try working with your family. Multi-generational shops are looked at in awe because a lot of times we just can't picture ourselves working with our parents or siblings or children. Family businesses can offer significant opportunities and even greater challenges. You know, far too often family businesses are looked at as nothing more than a dysfunctional dictatorship – we all do what dad says – but family businesses can be much more dynamic.Working together with your family every day can be challenging. Consider the possibility of potentially buying a shop from mom and dad or even selling it to your kids. Think about those transitional challenges on top of the challenges of running an automotive shop in general. And you have the family dynamic on top of the day-to-day challenges. Is this an easy or difficult transition? This episode of Talking Shop With ShopOwner features a conversation between third-generation shop owners Kevin and Renee Oswald, from Oswald Service in Rexburg and Idaho Falls, Idaho; veteran shop owner and mentor Vic Tarasik from Shop Owner Coach; and Doug Kaufman, editor of ShopOwner magazine.Talking Shop with Shop Owner is sponsored by AAPEX, the premier automotive industry networking and educational event. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over hoping for a different result. In today's economy, that's also a recipe for disaster. In this episode of Talking Shop with ShopOwner, David Rogers tells Doug Kaufman that every instinct he had when he was a new shop operator would have led him down that path to insanity by relying on his habits and the patterns he was comfortable with. Realizing that wasn't going to cut the mustard for his family or his shop's owner, he knew that change was necessary.David Rogers, COO of Keller Brothers in Littleton, Colorado, has consistently set sales and profit records for 25 years since he took over management of the shop. And for over 20 years, as founder and president of Auto Profit Masters and Shop4D, he's been helping thousands of other shop owners to do the same."Sitting still in today's business, economic and cultural environment will only benefit competitors who want to take you market," Rogers explains. "Change is the new normal."Rogers talks about how to make your shop the first choice for customers and employees, and references an article he wrote in the August 2022 issue of ShopOwner magazine. Perceptions of the industry have changed over the past 35 years. The grease monkey has given way to the technician and thanks to the effort of a lot of people in this industry, being in the automotive repair business is seen in a better light by many people. Of course, we still face resistance from some influential players.Luckily, there are dedicated trainers out there to remind us that education has ALWAYS been important in this industry and much of what we think is cutting edge technology has been around a lot longer than we might remember. What has changed is the speed and the increased need for up to date training, not only for technicians but also for service advisors and shop owners. In this episode of Talking Shop with ShopOwner, Doug Kaufman speaks with Duane "Doc" Watson, technical trainer at Bosch, about his history as an educator, the challenges he has faced and the opportunities he sees.To contact Doc, email Duane.Watson@us.bosch.com. Everyone complains that there's a lack of willing workers out there, and let's be honest from carry out to car repair, employment opportunities abound, if you could just get the bodies to apply. When it comes to your shop, quality can be a lot more attractive than quantity when it comes to job applicants. Canadian author, Margaret Trudeau said, "We can choose to wake up and grumble all day and be bitter and angry and judge others and find satisfaction in others doing bad instead of good. Or we can wake up with optimism and love and say, just what is this beautiful day going to bring me?" Is that something you can strive for and still be successful? Satisfaction is kind of a difficult thing to put your finger on. Can you be satisfied and successful? We've been told that being satisfied is just one more step or we've been told that you should never be satisfied, always strive for the next step. If you're a shop owner you've heard from your coaches and your industry suppliers that your labor rate is probably too low. Of course, you've heard from your customers that it's far too high! Who do you believe? As long as you're competitive to the shop down the street, there's not much more you need to know, right?Knowing your numbers will make your shop more profitable, more competitive and more attractive - and doesn't have to be any additional burden to your customer base. You've worked too hard to build your shop – don't give it away because of outdated perceptions of how important an accurate labor rate is or because of uncertainty of how to set yours.Doug Kaufman from ShopOwner magazine interviews Vic Tarasik from Shop Owner Coach. Finance can be a huge headache for shop owners. It's important to get paid for the work you do, of course but there can be significant challenges to collecting the payment when the repair is completed. Have you ever looked across the counter and wondered, "Is this transaction going to be a dream or a nightmare?" What's the scariest time of the year? It's not New Years, when you look in the mirror and realize how far you are from completing your resolutions. It's not Halloween, with its zombies and scary clowns. It's not even Thanksgiving, with the threat of a dry turkey and judgmental relatives. No, for many shop owners the real fear comes wiith employee reviews, when you sit one-on-one with an employee to talk about their accomplishments and shortfalls.Employee reviews don't have to be scary or unproductive. In this episode of Shop Owner Solutions, Doug Kaufman, editor of ShopOwner and Vic Tarasik from Shop Owner Coach talk with Brian Bates, owner of Eagle Automotive in LIttleton, CO, about how you can you ensure that reviews are beneficial to both parties and ultimately a learning and growth exercise for the entire team?
Hey, what's new? Ask that question these days any you're likely to get a wide assortment of answers. Business continues to change at a dizzying pace – from technology in the car to technology in the shop. It may be no surprise that some shop owners and service advisors find it difficult to keep up. Bob Greenwood, president and CEO of Automotive Aftermarket E-Learning Center has made a career out of doing just that. With more than 40 years of business management experience in the aftermarket and nearly 20 years running his own consulting and accounting firm, Bob talks with Doug Kaufman, editor of ShopOwner, about what it takes to help businesses thrive in today's aftermarket. From advanced technology under the hood to robotic devices keeping us between the lines, today's cars are definitely NOT your grandfather's Oldsmobile. And with all of the changes affecting business, this is probably not his independent repair shop either. Independent repair facilities deal with cutting edge technology and vehicle systems every day – but many of them are still running their business the old fashioned way. ShopOwner editor Doug Kaufman and fourth-generation small business owner Tom Shay discuss what shops need to do to make tomorrow's shop successful.

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Paul Barattiero. He has lectured across the world over the last 22 years.
