“This shocking expose of the CIA operation aimed at destroying the Vietcong infrastructure thoroughly conveys the hideousness of the Vietnam War” (Publishers Weekly). In the darkest days of the Vietnam War, America's Central Intelligence Agency secretly initiated a sweeping program of kidnap, torture, and assassination devised to destabilize the infrastructure of the National Liberation Front (NLF) of South Vietnam, commonly known as the “Viet Cong.” The victims of the Phoenix Program were Vietnamese civilians, male and female, suspected of harboring information about the enemy—though many on the blacklist were targeted by corrupt South Vietnamese security personnel looking to extort money or remove a rival. Between 1965 and 1972, more than eighty thousand noncombatants were “neutralized,” as men and women alike were subjected to extended imprisonment without trial, horrific torture, brutal rape, and in many cases execution, all under the watchful eyes of US government agencies.Based on extensive research and in-depth interviews with former participants and observers, Douglas Valentine's startling exposé blows the lid off of what was possibly the bloodiest and most inhumane covert operation in the CIA's history. The ebook edition includes “The Phoenix Has Landed,” a new introduction that addresses the “Phoenix-style network” that constitutes America's internal security apparatus today. Residents on American soil are routinely targeted under the guise of protecting us from terrorism—which is why, more than ever, people need to understand what Phoenix is all about.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
Operations Corrupt America and the World Douglas Valentine Author of three books on CIA operations, Valentine's research into CIA activities began when CIA Director William Colby gave him free access to interview CIA officials who had been involved in various aspects of the Phoenix program in South Vietnam. It was a permission Colby was to regret. The CIA would rescind it, making every effort to impede publication of The Phoenix Program, which documented the CIA's elaborate system of population surveillance, control, entrapment, imprisonment, torture and assassination in Vietnam. While researching Phoenix, Valentine learned that the CIA allowed opium and heroin to flow from its secret bases in Laos, to generals and politicians on its payroll in South Vietnam. His investigations into this illegal activity focused on the CIA's relationship with the federal drugs agencies mandated by Congress to stop illegal drugs from entering the United States. Based on interviews with senior officials, Valentine wrote two subsequent books, The Strength of the Wolf and The Strength of the Pack, showing how the CIA infiltrated federal drug law enforcement agencies and commandeered their executive management, intelligence and foreign operations staffs in order to ensure that the flow of drugs continues unimpeded to traffickers and foreign officials in its employ.Ultimately, portions of his research materials would be archived at the National Security Archive, Texas Tech University's Vietnam Center, and John Jay College. This book includes excerpts from the above titles along with subsequent articles and transcripts of interviews on a range of current topics, with a view to shedding light on the systemic dimensions of the CIA's ongoing illegal and extra-legal activities. These terrorism and drug law enforcement articles and interviews illustrate how the CIA's activities impact social and political movements abroad and in the United States.A common theme is the CIA's ability to deceive and propagandize the American public through its impenetrable government-sanctioned shield of official secrecy and plausible deniability.Though investigated by the Church Committee in 1975, CIA praxis then continues to inform CIA praxis now. Valentine tracks its steady infiltration into practices targeting the last population to be subjected to the exigencies of the American empire: the American people.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Dive deep into the shadowy depths of the CIA's darkest operations with "Veil of Shadows: The Hidden Truths of the CIA". Uncover startling revelations and bone-chilling secrets of an agency that operates beyond the grasp of law, cloaked in mystery and deception. Each episode peels back layers of intrigue, exposing covert missions and the tangled webs of deceit woven with the approval of the highest echelons of power. From orchestrating coups to secret wars and espionage, "Veil of Shadows" reveals a chilling portrait of an agency that shapes history from the shadows. Are you ready to uncover the truth? Listen if you dare.(00:00 - 01:25) Valentine discusses his extensive research on the CIA, noting it operates outside U.S. laws with Congressional, executive, and Supreme Court backing, enabling it to commit crimes overseas without prosecution.(02:03 - 03:28) He outlines the CIA's operation criteria: intelligence potential and absolute deniability, explaining that operations must be both potentially beneficial and entirely secret, with agents often disguised as diplomats, military officers, or businessmen to maintain deniability.(03:28 - 05:10) Valentine introduces his book and the Phoenix Program, a CIA initiative from the Vietnam War aimed at dismantling the Viet Cong's infrastructure through targeting civilian leaders, emphasizing the program's secrecy and its critical role in U.S. military strategy.(06:32 - 10:27) The Phoenix Program is described in depth, revealing its two-tier approach: high-level operations to turn Viet Cong leaders into double agents and low-level actions to terrorize villagers and dissuade them from supporting the Viet Cong, often using extreme measures like bombings and assassinations.(11:35 - 55:38) Valentine shares personal anecdotes about his journey to uncovering CIA secrets, his interactions with key figures like William Colby and Evan Parker, and the broader implications of his findings, including the alignment of CIA objectives with American capitalist and imperialist agendas, and the parallel he draws between the Phoenix Program and post-9/11 U.S. Homeland Security strategies.

Douglas Valentine: The Phoenix Program and the CIA"Doug Valentine belongs to that precious remnant of journalists and historians with the wisdom to see our time, the integrity and courage to write about it, and the literary grace to bring it all chillingly alive. This indispensable book may quite well be the best yet in the author's already singular body of work. He takes us again into that dark inner reality of policy and politics that Americans so tragically deny and evade, and gives us back a reflection there is no denying, no escaping. If there is hope for America at this moment of so many reckonings, it is out of pages like these." Roger Morris, author of Richard Milhous Nixon: The Rise of an American PoliticianThe Phoenix Program: Created by the CIA in Saigon in 1967, Phoenix was a computer-driven program aimed at "neutralizing", through assassination, kidnapping, and systematic torture, the civilian infrastructure that supported the insurgency in South Vietnam. It was a terrifying "final solution" that violated the Geneva Conventions and traditional American ideas of human morality. Abby and Robbie Martin dive deep into the CIA assassination program during the Vietnam war known as the 'Phoenix Program' with writer and deep politics expert Douglas Valentine. The contradiction of Daniel Ellsberg being a Vietnam war whistleblower and a player in the Phoenix Program is also explored. Guest: Doug Valentine. Doug talks about his latest book, “TDY” based on a story told to him by a veteran of the Vietnam war who was sent on a covert mission related to the CIA and military involvement in trafficking. There is also a bonus segment about how and why the CIA uses trafficking for funding of covert operations Ep 177EXTRA TDY and War Trafficking. From the book description: “This novel by Douglas Valentine, author of the nonfiction bestseller The CIA as Organized Crime, is based on a true story, one told to him by a Vietnam veteran, and barely, yet grippingly, fictionalized here. “In early 1967, a bored, adventurous photojournalist on an Air Force base in Texas is offered a Temporary Duty (TDY) assignment somewhere overseas. The mission is steeped in secrecy, but Pete is promised a large bonus and hazardous duty pay. The mission that unfolds is terrifying beyond anything Pete ever imagined.” Here’s what Oliver Stone said about the book: “I read it in suspense and found the last revelations after the mission even more disturbing.” Douglas Valentine is an author, investigator, journalist and poet. He’s the author of many other books, including “The Phoenix Program: America’s Use of Terror in Vietnam,” and “The CIA as Organized Crime: How Illegal Operations Corrupt America and the World.” He is well known for his extensive research and interviews of numerous CIA officers, former CIA director William Colby and others involved in the Phoenix Program. The Phoenix Program was a large operation that involved kidnapping, torture, and assassination. Its goal was the destruction of the Viet Cong insurgency, a political and paramilitary movement that worked against the United States and the US-backed South Vietnamese government during the Vietnam war. I'm a veteran of the anti-globalization movement, but sadly these days COVID-19 and some seriously messed up lungs have turned my activism into slacktivism. When I wasn't busy yesterday Venmo-ing my donation to the Pittsburgh Freedom Fund (see "Pittsburgh Jailbreak," below), I spent about 12 hours monitoring Twitter feeds, live streams, and my handy police scanner to try to get an idea of what was going on during the Battle of Pittsburgh. On this edition of Parallax Views, Douglas Valentine, author of the groundbreaking book The Phoenix Program, joins us in light of the republication of his book TDY to discuss covert operations, the CIA, the Vietnam War, and more. In this conversation, however, we take a more philosophical turn as Douglas and I attempt to answer the question "How did we get here" in regards to living in an age where secrecy, surveillance, terror, and fear seem to reign supreme in our society. In doing so Douglas and I consult the work of the French theorist Guy Debord of the Situationist International and author of The Society of the Spectacle. In this regard, Douglas makes special reference to Debord's observation that, ""Secrecy dominates this world, and foremost as the secret of domination." Author of three books on CIA operations, Valentine's research into CIA activities began when CIA Director William Colby gave him free access to interview CIA officials who had been involved in various aspects of the Phoenix program in South Vietnam. Valentine tracks its steady infiltration into practices targeting the last population to be subjected to the exigencies of the American empire: the American people.

In this episode I interview Douglas Valentine, author of four books in the CIA, DEA and the DEA's predecessor, the Federal Bureau of Narcotics or FBN. As part of my "deep politics" series, Valentine exposes the long and sordid history of CIA involvement in the drug trade and why there's such a cozy relationship between US intelligence and brutal drug cartels. Buckle your seats because this one is a real doozy.
On this edition of Parallax Views, writer Douglas Valentine is perhaps most known for his controversial research into the CIA and its covert operations. His most-well-known work is the heavily-footnoted The Phoenix Program: America's Use of Terror in Vietnam, which attempted to document particularly chilling Vietnam War operation undertaken by the Agency as overseen by William Colby (who, it should be noted, served as Director of the CIA from September 1973 to January 1976). Valentine has continued to explored the terrain of covert skullduggery in such works as The Strength of the Wolf: The Secret History of America's War on Drugs, The Strength of the Pack: The Personalities, Politics, and Espionage Intrigues that Shaped the DEA, and The CIA as Organized Crime: How Illegal Operations Corrupt America and the World. It turns out, however, that this is only one accept of Valentine's work. He is also, as it were, a champion and author of poetry. On this edition of the program, he joins us to discuss the poetry anthology he edited, With Our Eyes Wide Open: Poems of the New American Century. In the course of this conversation Douglas explain how he became interested in poetry and how poetry connects to his broader concerns, namely the promotion of humanism and social justice. Additionally, Douglas reads a few poems from the aforementioned anthology and gives his thoughts on the passing of Toni Morrison. And, during the intro, we fill listeners in, just a bit, on his work pertaining to The Phoenix Program. All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views! SUPPORT PARALLAX VIEWS ON PATREON! MintCast co-host Whitney Webb interviews author, investigative journalist and poet Doug Valentine about his extensive work on exposing the dark underbelly of the CIA and some of the agency’s most notorious covert programs. Webb and Valentine begin the interview discussing how Valentine’s journalistic work on the CIA led him to be spied on and even threatened by the agency and how being a dissident journalist in the 1990s compares to being one in the present. Valentine argues that, in the present, efforts to illegalize criticism of the state of Israel are like a gateway that will soon lead to the prohibition of criticism against the U.S. government and its intelligence agencies, the CIA among them.Valentine then touches on some of the themes covered in his book, The CIA as Organized Crime: How Illegal Operations Corrupt America and the World, including his assertion that the CIA operates as “the organized crime branch of the U.S. government” and how its activities have been influenced by its decades-long relationships with organized crime networks in the United States and throughout the world.Lastly, Webb and Valentine discuss the CIA’s long-standing interest in manipulating the media and how those efforts also extend to alternative media, not just mainstream media outlets. Valentine discusses the methods the CIA uses to target alternative, independent media and how we are seeing their efforts take place in real time.Follow Doug Valentine on Twitter or visit his website to learn more about his work.MintPress donors and patrons: Stay tuned later this week for a patron-exclusive extension of this podcast with Doug Valentine, which will discuss his work on the War on Drugs and the Drug Enforcement Agency and how both are key to unconstitutional, covert CIA programs. Begun in the 1950s, it was initially organized by Cord Meyer and Allen W. Dulles, it was later led by Frank Wisner after Dulles became the head of the CIA. The organization recruited leading American journalists into a network to help present the CIA’s views, and funded some student and cultural organizations, and magazines as fronts. As it developed, it also worked to influence foreign media and political campaigns, in addition to activities by other operating units of the CIA. The Church Committee was the United States Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities in 1975. The committee investigated abuses by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Security Agency (NSA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The committee was part of a series of investigations into intelligence abuses in 1975, dubbed the "Year of Intelligence". Red Wemette : "Nobody Cares and What I did About It! The Red Wemette Story of the Chicago Outfit"Author of three books on CIA operations, Valentine's research into CIA activities began when CIA Director William Colby gave him free access to interview CIA officials who had been involved in various aspects of the Phoenix program in South Vietnam.
