Simply Walk The Talk

Chris Ryan's work has been translated into over twenty languages, and appeared just about everywhere, including Netflix, HBO, MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, NPR, The New York Times, The Times of London, Playboy, The Washington Post, National Geographic, and More… Chris has been a featured speaker at TED, SXSW, The Festival of Dangerous Ideas at the Sydney Opera House and is a frequent guest on The Joe Rogan Experience, the Duncan Trussell Family Hour, and many other podcasts. Even before co-authoring the New York Times best-seller, Sex at Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What it Means for Modern Relationships with Cacilda Jethá, MD in 2010, Chris was on a wild ride. After receiving a BA in English and American literature in 1984 he spent the next two decades traveling around the world, pausing in unexpected places to work at very odd jobs. In his mid-30s, Chris decided to get a little serious and pursue doctoral studies in Psychology at Saybrook Graduate School, in San Francisco, CA, using his dissertation to examine Darwin's rather naive understanding of human sexual evolution — providing the core arguments later advanced in Sex at Dawn. Chris's latest book, Civilized to Death: The Price of Progress asks whether civilization has been a net benefit to our species. He hosts a weekly podcast, Tangentially Speaking, often recorded from the road while traveling in his van. The podcast features conversations with comics, bank robbers, drug smugglers, porn stars, authors, and an occasional rattlesnake expert. #ChrisRyan #BestsellerAuthor #SexAtDawn #CivilizedToDeath #GlobalExplorer #ThoughtLeader #Psychoanalysis #DiverseConversations #CulturalObserver | CHRIS RYAN | SUBSTACK - https://substack.com/@dudeinhammock WEBSITE - https://chrisryanphd.com/ IG - https://www.instagram.com/thatchrisryan X - https://twitter.com/ThatChrisRyan FACEBOOK - https://www.facebook.com/chrisryanphd/ BOOKS - https://www.amazon.com/Sex-Dawn-Stray-Modern-Relationships/dp/0061707813/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= & https://www.amazon.com/Civilized-Death-What-Lost-Modernity/dp/1451659105/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1702656704&sr=8-1 Join Host

My guest today is Christopher Ryan, an acclaimed author and speaker who has led a diverse and unconventional life, from working odd jobs around the world to earning a Ph.D. in Psychology and being a self-proclaimed “vanthropologist.”He is the host of the podcast Tangentially Speaking, as well as the author of “Civilized to Death” and the co-author of “Sex At Dawn”, which columnist Dan Savage has called “The single most important book on human sexuality since Alfred Kinsey's Sexual Behavior in the Human Male.”When I read “Sex At Dawn” over a decade ago, it had a significant influence on my life path and approach to relationships, as you'll hear in this episode. As well, we cover Chris' own journey that inspired him to reach into the pre-history of humanity and find fresh insights into modern relationships, sexuality, and how remarkably similar we are to bonobos. We discuss the complex challenges for men & masculinity today, we touch on his observations about the radical peace project of Tamera, and finally, he shares his best (and only) advice on how to live into the future of relationships.LINKS* Christopher Ryan - Official Website* Christopher Ryan on InstagramSHOW NOTES* Crestone is a unique spiritual community at 8,000 feet with open-air cremations, Tibetan stupas, and diverse spiritual centers.* Historical Origins: Crestone's history involves visionary landowners and prophecies of harmonious coexistence among different religious traditions, leading to the creation of spiritual centers.* Chris's Journey: Chris's exploration of cultures and alternative lifestyles began in his youth and eventually led him to Crestone.* Understanding the Human Condition: Chris's career focuses on understanding human behavior and challenging cultural norms.* "Sex at Dawn": The book challenges traditional monogamy notions, examining evolutionary psychology, anthropology, and bonobo behavior.* Controversy and Conversation: "Sex at Dawn" sparked debates and opposition by questioning conventional beliefs about monogamy.* Career Evolution: Chris shifted from literature to psychology and faced backlash from the academic community.* Cultural Biases in Science: The discussion highlights how cultural biases influence scientific disciplines like anthropology.* Exploring Masculinity: Masculinity encompasses risk-taking, humor, and courageous conversations, not limited to stereotypical traits.* Challenges in Modern Masculinity: Contemporary culture presents complexities, with concerns about toxic masculinity and limited career opportunities for young men.* Impact of Toxic Messages: Toxic ideologies exploit the challenges faced by young men and promote disrespect toward women.* Rediscovering Cooperation: The future presents a choice between eroding traditional gender roles and rediscovering human cooperation, which may necessitate shared resources and mutual support.FROM THE ARCHIVEYou may also enjoy these episodes: Get full access to The Mythic Masculine at themythicmasculine.substack.com/subscribe

None of the statements or ethnobotanical information in this episode have been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The purpose of the information conveyed in this podcast is simply to explore the ancient healing practices of indigenous cultures. Please consult a professional if you are considering the use of plant-based medicines.      In many ways people have become disconnected, dislocated, and dislodged from their place in the world as a result of trauma.  Trauma due to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, neglect, household dysfunction, or just everyday unmanaged stress as an important social determinant of health. These traumas can actually change the chemical makeup of the brain and increase the risk for developing certain physical ailments, including digestive problems, diabetes, chronic pain, and heart disease. Unfortunately, the American healthcare system is not effective in addressing the root causes of the chronic issues we face at a psycho-emotional level. Western culture is now looking for alternative ways to stem the epidemic of anxiety, depression, and stress we see in the modern world.  Is there an opportunity in health transformation to seek alternative and ancient sources of healing medicine that finds coherence between the mind and heart and the body and the spirit?      This week we are offering our listeners with a Bonus episode to discuss the healing potential of ayahuasca. Our guest is Kevin Johnson (also known by the Q'ero people of Peru as Puma Blanco). He is a shamanic healer who has become a popular public speaker, giving presentations on consciousness, shamanism, plant medicines and psychedelics. He's been featured in several magazines and periodicals, and has appeared on many popular podcasts including; “Tangentially Speaking” with Christopher Ryan, “The Duncan Trussell Family Hour”, “The Warrior Poet” with Aubrey Marcus, “Not Just Paleo” with Evan Brand, “Fat Burning Man” with Abel James, and “The Truth Junkie Podcast” with Kevin Bates…just to name a few. This won't be your typical Race to Value episode.  Not only are we exploring the congruency between ayahuasca and healing and the parallels between shamanism and Western medicine, but we will also be learning about the Q'ero people of Peru who have a special relationship with the planet and an approach to energy balancing that maybe we could all learn from.      If you have an open mind and an open heart, you will find this conversation to be quite enlightening and informative as people around the world are retracing the ancient pathways of shamanism, the oldest spiritual practice of healing on the planet. So let's now hear from Kevin Johnson, who is joining us for this special bonus episode of the Race to Value! Episode Bookmarks: 01:30 Trauma as an overlooked social determinant of health that leads to chronic disease. 02:30 Introduction to Kevin (Puma Blanco) Johnson – a shamanic healer and popular public speaker on the topics of consciousness, shamanism, plant medicines, and psychedelics. 03:00 The healing potential of ayahuasca, parallels between shamanism and Western medicine, and the Q'ero people of Peru. 05:45 Referencing prior episode with Dr. Charles Nemeroff, the Co-Director for the Center for Psychedelic Research & Therapy. 06:00 Inspiration from Hippocrates: “The greatest medicine of all is teaching people how not to need it.” “Foolish the doctor who despises the knowledge acquired by the ancients.” 06:30 Ayahuasca is a very ancient medicine, with archaeological evidence for the consumption of ayahuasca going back at least a thousand years. 07:30 An overview of ayahuasca as a plant medicine and how it can provide healing, alleviate suffering, and enhance spirituality.

Dr. Christopher Ryan is the author of two amazing and polarizing books: Civilized to Death, and Sex at Dawn. He is also the host of the podcast Tangentially Speaking. Dr. Ryan discusses what motivated him in his books, and if now is really the best time to be alive, like most of us assume. He seeks to understand humanity and the decisions we make through an unfiltered lens. In this episode, Dr. Ryan highlights parallels between the social unrest we're experiencing today with the evolution from hunter gatherer to agricultural societies. He also posits when structures fall, we see people coming together (though we're taught to assume the opposite). He briefly discusses Bitcoin; that to him is a colossal amount of energy used to do nothing. Lastly, the two discuss the reality of insurance, which Dr. Ryan says demonstrates how every possible thing that could be monetized, is. Jay believes that part of being a great investor means identifying your own biases and social conditioning to uncover your blind spots, so we hope you're able to take something new from this conversation, and enjoy it as much as we did.  To get more from Dr. Christopher Ryan, you can follow him on Twitter @ThatChrisRyan or visit his website chrisryanphd.com.  Join our investment community and sign up for our free weekly newsletter at cambridgehouse.com. We were both a little shocked at how much we disliked this book, especially given how many people had recommended it to us. We share our own opinions about healthy masculine & feminine expression/integration, and why we think this book reads more like a parenting book than a guide to healthy & evolved relationships. We discuss our thoughts on how to maintain eroticism in relationships, why growth isn't always comfortable and why "othering" your partner is never a good strategy for "enlightenment" nor self-awareness. Daniele is a frequently sought-after guest on shows such as The Joe Rogan Experience, Duncan Trussell's Family Hour, the Aubrey Marcus Podcast, our mutual friend Michael Phillip's Third Eye Drops, Tangentially Speaking with Chris Ryan, The Astral Hustle with Corey Allen, Align Podcast with Aaron Alexander, and Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. I'm stopping here, but there are so many more! Daniele hosts two podcasts: The Drunken Taoist and History of Fire. I think I also heard somewhere that he's ‘the middle finger of the gods.' But, most important to me, Daniele is my friend – and not just online, but in ‘real life.' Duncan is the madman who first got me into podcasting, as well as various other kinds of trouble, so it's fitting that he and our mutual pal, Daniele help me celebrate this 30th episode of Tangentially Speaking. There must be some numerical convergence there: 3 & 30. Our friend Kyle Del Bonis joined us on the spur of the moment and although we only had 3 mics, he chipped in some of his characteristically deep shit. This is a public episode.
