Sam and Emma host Jules Boykoff, Pacific University professor of politics and government, former US Olympian and author of NOlympians: Inside the Fight Against Capitalist Mega-Sports in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Beyond, to discuss the Olympics industrial complex and the growing international movement for ending the development of Olympic complexes. They walk through the history of the games as an elite affair, originally created by a French Baron and now a multibillion-dollar corporate industry, and how the International Olympics Committee is able to capitalize on public money and the role of their athletes to make huge material gains for themselves and corporations at the expense of local infrastructure and participating athletes. Professor Boykoff delves into the particularly brutal role the Olympics have in displacing low-income folks in every city they move to, and how this helped spur DSA LA's housing work to move towards establishing the NOlympics project. Jules, Emma, and Sam also look into the history of local protests against the Olympics, and how NOlympics seeks to change these from momentary uprisings to a global movement to end the Olympics as they exist. Emma and Sam round out the first half reflecting on the legacy of anti-imperialist and U.S. Senator Mike Gravel, exploring his biggest moments on the political stage. And in the Fun Half: Tony from Illinois calls in for advice on the best tactics to push Medicare for All in conservative entrenched areas, Mitt Romney plays off the Big Lie as more of a Big Game, comparing U.S. Politics to Wrestling and perhaps explaining his commitment to his heel persona, and Marjorie Taylor Green garners the Sarah Palin comparison as Sam wonders aloud why Bernie has never gotten the birtherism argument pushed against folks like AOC and Obama (it's pretty obvious). Then, Tucker Carlson rallies up white fear, pushing a conspiracy of white genocide, Dan Crenshaw eyes up an age-old dog whistle on Black activism in sports, and Ben from NY reflects on the few lessons learned from the FTV project. They wrap up the fun half by discussing YouTube's algorithms and the importance of building anti-trust infrastructure, and looking into the growth of the Delta variant of COVID alongside vaccine fear-mongering, plus, your calls and IMs! SB827 is currently the hot button issue in Los Angeles, YIMBYs versus NIMBYs, as it were. But perhaps there are better ways to understand and fix the housing crisis in Los Angeles as the cost of houses and apartments has skyrocketed in recent years leading to a surge in people without permanent or stable housing. Researcher and DSA-LA member Jacob Woocher swings by the studio to talk about the housing crisis in LA. We cover how LA developed along incredibly racially and class segregated lines, how this has caused a massive housing shortage, and what LA is doing wrong. We also discuss alternative housing models and what a public investment in housing would look like. We have a new musical intro provided by the band Minutes. This week on TL4T we've got Part 1 of our 2 part episode with No Olympics LA! We're talking with Steve Ducey and Johnny Coleman, both with DSA LA, and the No Olympics LA campaign. From nolympicsla.com "The Olympics puts the interests of the mega-rich and corporate brands above the interests of athletes, fans, and working people in the cities it commandeers. A Los Angeles Olympics (and Paralympics) would primarily service the corporate interests of the IOC and the state and national political ambitions of Mayor Eric Garcetti. Should LA host the Olympics, we will see wide-ranging human rights’ violations and the forfeiture of our city to the interests of contractors, developers, media corporations, and the special interests who designed the bid."

Episode 48 We’re back!!! Where have we been?? Like for real. Where?! We explain. We interview Los Angeles City Councilman for District 4, David E. Ryu, who was elected to his first term in the summer of 2015. The 4th District is at the center of Los Angeles. The unusually shaped district reaches from Koreatown and Mid-Wilshire through Miracle Mile, the Fairfax District, north through much of Hollywood, Los Feliz and Griffith Park, and Silver Lake, and north through the Hollywood Hills, over the Cahuenga Pass into North Hollywood, and Sherman Oaks. What. The scope of Councilmember Ryu's job duties range from the most local like the refilling (and future of) the Silverlake Reservoir, national issues like DACA, and the 2028 Olympics. Ryu is the first Korean-American and only the second Asian-American to serve on the LA City Council. And as of 2017, only Ryu and fellow Councilman José Huizar (District 14) were born outside the US. Councilmember Ryu was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1975 and moved with his family to Los Angeles when he was 6 years old. He holds a BA in Economics from UCLA and a Masters of Public Policy & Administration from Rutgers University. Some of Ryu's core issues are fiscal accountability, limiting the uncontrolled expansion of homes, and restoring trust in government. On this episode, Matt & Jesse have a discussion with Kelsey Goldberg (@KelseyFGold) and Jack Suria Linares (@SuriaLinares213) from DSA-Los Angeles chapter about the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Kelsey and Jack explore their childhood and later political awakening by describing the moment (or moments) that led to not only their transcendent belief in socialism, but how they went beyond mere beliefs by deciding to take action and become activists and organizers via their self-discovery process. We will also learn about DSA's history and contributions, as well as its future aims as a consequence of its recent National Convention. Additionally, our visitors to the show will talk about what DSA-LA has in the revolutionary pot that's about to boil over into a Mario-Brothers pasta of comrade-goodness.
