"U.S. Steel is a historic American company. And it is vital for our nation to maintain strong American steel companies. And I couldn't agree more with President Biden - U.S. Steel should remain American-owned and American-operated." That was Vice President Kamala Harris campaigning in Pittsburgh on Labor Day in a joint appearance with President Joe Biden. She told the crowd of over 600 people at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #5 union hall, "I will always have the back of America's steelworkers." Harris and Biden have strongly opposed the sale of the U.S. Steel Corporation to Japanese company Nippon Steel, a $14.9 billion deal, threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of American steelworkers, with the potential loss of up to 600 jobs at the Granite City Works plant. Harris and Biden stand firm with American workers, insisting that American steel remains in American hands. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Washington is leading the nation as a model for the transition to a climate-safe future. People, movements, and politicians across the state have been able to pass landmark policies that benefit local communities, as well as inspire other regions to follow suit. From Seattle's commercial energy codes, to Whatcom County's first-ever ban on new fossil fuel infrastructure, to the statewide Climate Commitment Act, Washington continues to set examples for how progressive climate policies can support a thriving region. As we build on nationwide momentum to reduce carbon emissions, protect our environment, and build community resilience, let's take stock of our successes and determine the most impactful and equitable pathways forward: Who is leading real climate progress in Washington, and how can we support them in climate action that leaves no one in our state behind? State Representative Alex Ramel will moderate a panel of activists and experts who are supporting Washington's diverse communities to build a shared, climate-safe future. Panelists: Todd Paglia, Executive Director, Stand.earth Todd Paglia began his career as an attorney for Ralph Nader, focusing on the environment, consumer protection issues, and holding corporations accountable. As Executive Director of Stand.earth since 1999, his commitment to conservation led a winning campaign to drive Fortune 500 companies including Staples, Williams-Sonoma, 3M, and more to purchase and use recycled paper, and immediately preserve millions more old growth and endangered forests. An avid fisher and skier, Todd's love for the planet drew him to Washington State. He has called Bellingham home for 16 years. Nicole Grant, Director of Government Affairs for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 46 in Seattle Nicole joined 350 Seattle in November 2021 after gaining tremendous strategic grounding and practical knowledge in her 20 years in the labor movement. In her time as Executive Secretary at the Martin Luther King County Labor Council, she led a transition that helped to make the organization more focused on racial, gender, and climate justice — while also invigorating its commitments to the need for working people to have a “great life in greater Seattle.” Nicole is a journeyman electrician with IBEW 46, where she also served as the Executive Director of the Certified Electrical Workers of Washington. Jay Julius, President and Founder, Se'Si'Le Jay is the former Chairman of the Lummi Nation, a full-time fisherman, and a father. Jay was a leader in the fight to protect Xwe'chi'eXen (Cherry Point) and has organized and executed Tribal, local, regional, and national campaigns. A bridge-builder, he uses empathy and storytelling to bring people together. Principal at Julius Consulting LLC, he is also the Founder and President of the organization Se'Si'Le, which offers strategies for integrating ancestral knowledge into policies, projects, and partnerships with the will of right and respectful relations. Moderator: Alex Ramel, Washington State Representative for the 40th District Rep. Alex Ramel joined the Washington legislature in January of 2020. Last year he was elected by his colleagues to the leadership role of Majority Whip. A single parent, he was called to public service to help address the climate and housing crises facing current and future generations. He has served as President of the Kulshan Community Land Trust which helps build and preserve affordable housing. He also led the development of the Community Energy Challenge which brings businesses, utilities, non-profits, and government together to help conserve energy, reduce costs, and create good paying jobs. Rep. Ramel has called Bellingham home for over 20 years. Presented by Town Hall Seattle and Stand.earth.

Esperanza and Irwin look back at the three lives of Bayberry Land in Southampton. In 1916, the banker Charles Sabin and his wife, Pauline Morton Smith Sabin purchased these 314 acres for a country home, naming it after the low growing shrub prevalent on the east end. The estate comprised 8 buildings, including a manor house, garage with chauffer's apartment, gatehouse, caretakers cottage, hunting stable...you get the idea. The Sabin's lifestyle was as grand as the setting, entertaining New York's Blue Book society, Southampton's summer colony, as well as senators, judges and members of congress. Come 1949, the property was sold for $131,250 to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 3. The union president is a name familiar to anyone driving the Van Wyck Expressway, Harry Van Arsdale, Jr. A convalescent rest home, an education center for its workers, as well as a children's camp were just some of the changes made during the Union's 50+ years of ownership. In 2001, the IBEW sold the property for $46 million dollars to Michael Pascucci, who created a golf course on the property designed by Jack Nicklaus. Purchasing it at auction for the same price, but unable to consummate the deal was a second buyer, Donald Trump. Mr. Pascucci in his own words wanted people who were non glitzy, saying it wasn't a valet parking type of place. Those people however, did have a $650,000 membership fee.

Today's show features a brand-new song from Tom Morello, who teamed up with grandson and wrote the song "Hold the Line" to honor "every working person fighting for their rights on the picket line." The song and the video seamlessly merge labor history past and present, just like we do here on Labor History Today. Click here for the AFL-CIO's Strike Map. On October 26, Michigan Congressman Andy Levin, member of the House Education and Labor Committee, hosted a Special Order Hour to honor the life and work of the late AFL-CIO President Richard L. Trumka, who died on August 5. Before getting elected to Congress, Andy worked for Trumka at the AFL-CIO, and he talks here about Trumka's working-class roots and the historic role he played in the American labor movement.   Electrician and journey wire-woman Kim Spicer is a proud member of The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #3, in Queens, New York. Kim talked to the America Works podcast about how she tried numerous other, less fulfilling jobs before apprenticing to become an electrician and why she loves it. She touches on her training, some of the tasks and skills involved in her work, her daily on-the-job routines, and the challenges of being a woman in a traditionally male trade. And, on Labor History in 2:00: The year was 1938; that was the day that the national Federation of telephone workers was founded in new Orleans Louisiana.  Produced by Chris Garlock. #LaborRadioPod Far too many people feel mistreated at work, but when is that mistreatment because of a "bad boss," and when is it actually a violation of the law? Shannon and Harold talk to two Labor attorneys to find out where that line is drawn, and what recourse working people have under the law. First they talk with Diana Winther (https://www.ibew48.com/leadership/diana-winther) General Counsel for this episode's sponsor, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 48, about the difference between Labor law and employment law - and when it might be time to contact an attorney if you think your employer is violating the law. Then they talk with Daniel Hutzenbiler (https://mbjlaw.com/attorneys/daniel-hutzenbiler/) a union attorney at McKanna Bishop Joffe about the federal laws that protect Americans in their workplaces - and the changes passage of the #PROAct will bring. In this episode of the Construction Record podcast, Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce national managing editor Vince Versace speaks with electrician and Kickass Careers Ambassador Shannon Tymosko.  Tymosko began in the trades in 2018 after completing a co-op program to become a machinist and then entering the YWCA Hamilton Electrical Pre-Apprenticeship program. She has since apprenticed with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 105 and is an ambassador for KickAss Careers, an organization whose mission is to promote careers in the skilled trades to students and those who are underrepresented in the construction industry. Tymosko explained why it's important to speak to younger students in order to raise awareness of the opportunities in the trades and the changing nature of an industry where women are finding more positions than ever before. She also focuses on the problems and challenges facing young people looking to enter the industry including a lack of basic skills at the high school level that hampers some from entering apprenticeships or even conceiving of a career in the trades. Tymosko also addresses working with KickAss Careers founder Jamie McMillan who has worked as a journeyman ironworker since 2002 and who has been a mentor to Tymosko and other women working in the skilled trades.
