Could your staffing costs be draining your profits? How do you scale pet care services without multiplying mistakes? What's the easiest way to increase profitability without adding more clients? In this episode, I sit down with Sean Felty from Greenlin Pet Resorts - owner of six busy facilities and founder of Next Tree Strategies - to talk about how he's helping pet care businesses plug their biggest profit leak: labour inefficiency. Sean shares how one payroll misstep at his own company sparked the creation of a labour benchmarking system that's now saving operators thousands per pay period. We talk about the most common issues dog daycares face with over-hiring, reactive scheduling, and manager blind spots - and how Sean's system helps businesses get control fast, without sacrificing care quality. We also explore why growth often amplifies inefficiencies, and how Sean's healthcare background taught him to fix processes with data - not guesswork. Tune in to discover… • The Labour Cost Leak – Why most pet care businesses lose thousands on overstaffing without realising. • Benchmarking That Works – How Sean's system tracks labour hours per pet to keep costs under control. • Seasonality Pitfalls – The sneaky way staffing habits grow out of control and what to do about it. • From Healthcare to Pet Care – What Sean learned in hospitals that now helps daycares save big. • Fixing with Data – Why Sean says labour management isn't guesswork—it's a process anyone can master. From young golf enthusiasts to industry leaders overseeing iconic venues, Jeff Corcoran and Dave Delsandro share their journey of passion, growth, and adaptation in the golf industry. Discover their evolution from demanding superintendents to understanding leaders, the challenges of labor shortages, and their new roles as advisors, providing invaluable insights and expertise to the next generation of golf course superintendents Corcoran has been a golf course superintendent for more than 20 years. He landed his first head superintendent job at The Weston Golf Club, outside of Boston, and he has been the director of agronomy at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, since 2003. During his tenure at Oak Hill, he hosted two PGA Championships and two Senior PGA Championships. In 2019, Corcoran worked in conjunction with architect Andrew Green to renovate Oak Hill's East Course. Corcoran has been responsible for placing 10 assistant superintendents into superintendent roles. Delsandro's career in the turf industry has spanned 25 years, most recently as the superintendent at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. His experiences include all types of conventional golf course construction projects, as well as large-scale site development, earth moving, utility relocation/installation, and building construction. He has worked with several leading golf architectural firms, including Fazio Design, Coore & Crenshaw, and Hanse Golf Design. Delsandro has successfully prepared for, hosted, and restored venues for four national championships, including two U.S. Opens. They partnered last year to form Agronomic Advisors, a consulting company focused on providing a diverse, comprehensive suite of solutions to the golf course industry. In this episode, Delsandro and Corcoran look back fondly on the golf course as their babysitter, share the lessons they learned as leaders at premier venues, and advise today's superintendents on leadership approaches in a changing industry. Your Club Selection Changes with Age, so Should Your Leadership Approach Most of us need to adjust our club selection as we age in order to hit the ball as far as we once did. The clubs we grabbed as teens, such as the self-described junkies Delsandro and Corcoran once were, won't make the cut after we make the turn in the game of life. Neither will the same approach to managing a department in a golf club nor leading a large capital project. Know when and how to adapt. “When you're younger, and you're trying to prove yourself at this particular level, as a superintendent, your bandwidth for people that fall outside of those realms that you that you live in is pretty narrow,” Corcoran said. “I remember telling guys, ‘You don't want to work till 7 o'clock tonight on Friday? You're not dedicated enough. You've only worked 21 days in a row and you want a day off? You're not dedicated enough.' “That sounds awful now.” Recognize that it takes all kinds of individuals to build a team and have a culture of success. Labor Market Management The labor market in the industry has changed significantly in recent years, and that's not just a problem for superintendents at local community golf venues. Leaders at the premier clubs face the same challenges, particularly when weighed against the facts that member expectations are not changing, nor are members willing to pay more for a stagnant experience. Talk about shifting winds. “The light-bulb moment for me was… I can either expect the labor market to change to meet the needs of one corporation or the upper echelon of one industry, or duh, realistically, we have to change to meet the labor market,” Delsandro said. Get as many outside perspectives, including those from outside the golf industry, as possible, and see what makes sense to apply as you manage a team at your course. Enjoy this episode of Leadership on the Links with David Delsandro and Jeff Corcoran! Soundbytes 17:15-17:46 “In this industry, as a professional, it started to become very apparent to me that everybody defined success differently. And from a leadership standpoint, the one good thing about working at a premium club in our business, or towards the upper echelon of any industry, is that typically, if you do it right, you're going to find transferable skills. Whether that's communication, professionalism, work ethic, or management skills.” —David Delsandro 34:42-35:25 “You see this whole dynamic of wages rising and operational pressure. Then you're talking about dues increases at a membership level and inflationary wage increases far exceeding operational increases. You know what I mean? There's this whole dynamic that starts crashing down. And at some point, it's going to break, right? So you do need to be creative. But on a macro level, it's gonna get to the point where there's a threshold. And there's some vast changes within industry that I think that are upcoming in the next five to eight years.” —Jeff Corcoran Quotes “The golf course was like my babysitter for the most part. My parents had to work. They just dropped me off, went to work, and they'd pick me up when it got dark out.” —Jeff Corcoran “I started working at the local public golf course when I was 15 just to get free golf. I thought I was going to work in the pro shop. I showed up on my first day with pressed khakis and a Sears, three-button Polo shirt, but at 9 a.m. I had some 60-year-old guy holding my ankles hanging over an irrigation ditch, covered in mud.” —David Delsandro “The labor market is such that there aren't as many individuals that are as motivated as there [used to be], if I'm being very open and honest about that.” —Jeff Corcoran “You soon learn that you don't know everything, and you need some help. You need people to see some stuff outside of the box and bring in consultants or industry professionals.” —Jeff Corcoran “There comes a point — and we've all been there, whether it's your first intendent's job or a new superintendent job at a different venue — that there's the realization that happens when you're like, ‘OK, I'm the guy now. Every decision that I make has consequences.' And it's more that you're not trying to succeed, you're just trying not to fail.” —David Delsandro “We've found that helping a new superintendent or a superintendent at a new venue has been some of the most rewarding work that we've done, because we're able to serve the person who we used to be; to help them succeed by avoiding mistakes that we made.” —David Delsandro Links Mentioned in This Episode: Tyler Bloom Consulting: https://tylerbloomconsulting.com/ Agronomic Advisors: https://agro-advisors.com/ Connect with David on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-delsandro-5071692a6/ Connect with Jeff on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeff-corcoran-5681092a6/ Follow Agronomic Advisors on X: https://x.com/agro_advisors23

We conclude our discussion of Lupton's "On the Shop Floor" by looking at both the importance of the study as a classic example of ethnography and the benefits of participant-observation, followed by the application of Lupton's findings in the modern post-pandemic workplace. To what extent do contemporary concerns such as the “great resignation” or “quiet quitting” echo Lupton's findings, and what are possible implications for today's workers and managers?
We will examine Lupton's famous study of worker-management relations, On the Shop Floor: Two Studies of Workshop Organization and Output published in 1963. This significantly overlooked study examined social structures in the workplace that kept production levels below that expected by management and why they were permitted. His findings may provide some insights into similar challenges in the contemporary workplace.
This month, we discuss examine Lupton's famous study of worker-management relations, On the Shop Floor: Two Studies of Workshop Organization and Output published in 1963. Tom Lupton spent 12 months as a factor worker in two different settings examining why workers intentionally worked at a level below management expectations. He found that social structures formed that protected workers from overuse or abuse by management and ensured a stable pay. These structures discouraged workers from working too hard or not hard enough. In Part 1, we will examine the cases in depth and present Lupton's findings.

“Labor Day” is celebrated on the first Monday in September. However, in the workplace, there is often an imbalance of power between management and labor that creates a hazard for both. The COVID 19 pandemic, compounded by the rise of concerns about diversity and the Great Resignation, has helped workers recognize their power to influence how they are treated has changed. One way of balancing the scales is collective bargaining. This episode will feature a labor leader who, though multiple instances of serendipity, led a group of workers to a historic collective bargaining agreement.
Labor is a hot topic distribution right now, with rising wages and labor shortages in most markets. In fact, a recent survey by Gartner found that for the first time, addressing labor issues was cited as the top reason for investing in DC automation, surpassing reducing operating costs, the traditional driver of material handling systems adoption. Labor management software can provide a variety of capabilities and benefits to address labor issues in distribution.

We have gotten so good at separating our work and our worship that what happens to us on Sundays may seem pretty far-removed from what happens to us on Mondays. But this was not God's design. Work is intended to be a blessing, a means by which God allows us to provide for ourselves and our families and even His work. We often spend more hours and years working than in any other single pursuit. In today's message, Paul will remind us of the biblical relationship between employees and bosses, and, most importantly, he will challenge us to work with the right motives, the right focus, and the right awareness of who the BOSS really is. During the maximum telework period of the COVID-19 crisis, criticism of federal telework has largely been blunted by Pentagon and OPM evidence that productivity has been maintained during remote work. The pandemic experience now offers a unique opportunity for change because old assumptions about the effectiveness of telework were blown up by the data. This could be done through labor-management relations. Robert M. Tobias is a distinguished practitioner in residence at the Key Executive Leadership Program at American University, the former president of the National Treasury Employees Union and a GovExec contributor. His latest post on our site is headlined “The Pandemic Has Created an Opening to Improve Federal Labor-Management Relations.” He joined the podcast to discuss how the COVID-19 crisis can be used to facilitate better conversations between labor and management.

We are welcoming the new year with a new podcast entitled, ‘Selling in Color.' It's a new podcast designed to help salespeople weather the challenges in the sales world. Looking back The Sales Evangelist podcast started eight years ago and we're now at about 1,400 episodes. TSE has also produced about 3.45 million downloads to the podcast. All these episodes have helped many people, organizations, and families to progress. The podcast is a powerful avenue to share ideas. Martin Luther King said, ‘Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.' Sales is difficult because sometimes, people don't accept the solutions that you offer them or they don't realize the problem in the first place. There are so many different opportunities available to us when we come together. 2020 was a tough year: the pandemic happened, George Floyd happened, and others. After Floyd, many people have asked where the black people in sales are. There are black sales leaders and sales reps out there and there are different challenges tied to them. In truth, minorities are facing a lot of challenges when it comes to the corporate scene for selling. Major companies out there do not have diverse teams. There's too much inclusion in most teams, including sales. Sales is a very rewarding career and you can use it to help your family. According to the Bureau of Labor Management, 79.8% of people in sales are white and 11.2% are black. The other 10% consists of other nationalities. There are many reasons for this. It might be because they don't realize how rewarding sales is or they weren't given the opportunity to try a career in sales. There are so many topics unique to minorities that need to be addressed. ‘Selling in Color' podcast The podcast is launching on February 15. It's a show dedicated to helping people of color understand more about sales, understand the opportunities, and discuss the challenges specific to the minorities of people of color. It would help minorities to reach out to the right people for mentorship and to get access to quality sales. This is a movement to more inclusiveness in sales and to get more minorities involved in sales. “Introducing the ‘Selling in Color'” episode resources Help out or learn more by going to tsestudios.io/sic. There's a good chance that your corporate training program isn't up to snuff. Companies might think they have adequate training initiatives for new and continuing employees covering multiple functions. Too often, though, their efforts are falling short. The failure to properly train one's workforce can result in billions of dollars of lost profits from insurance claims, worker's compensation, medical visits, time off work and lawsuits both inside and outside the organization. On this episode, Carol Leaman, chief executive officer of Axonify, talks about what constitutes an effective training program. U.S. West Coast ports are being ''held hostage'' by longshore labor. So says one noted economist. Diana Furchtgott-Roth is a former chief economist with the U.S. Department of Labor. Today, she serves as director of Economics21, in addition to acting as senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. She believes it's time for a change in the way that longshore labor is regulated. The National Labor Relations Act, which currently governs activities by U.S. dockworkers, doesn't prevent them from bringing port operations to a halt at will. But their actions as in the case of the recent slowdown at West Coast ports can have serious consequences for the U.S. economy. Furchtgott-Roth says ports should fall under the same law that governs rail and airline labor, and prohibits strikes under the theory that those sectors are vital to interstate commerce and the nation's economy well-being. Disputes under the jurisdiction of the Railway Labor Act are settled through mediation and, if necessary, a board of arbitrators selected by the President of the U.S. Ports, she says, are no less crucial to commerce than railroads and airlines, especially at a time when international trade is so vital to the nation's interest. But is a change in the law politically feasible?
