Hochul tells New York Power Authority to scrap rate increase plans by WSKG News
On Tuesday January 14, 2025, Governor Hochul delivered the annual State of the State address. There was a massive showing of state police. The climate group Planet over Profit did briefly block an entrance to the speech as part of the campaign to get the New York Power Authority to up their goal for building new renewables from 3.5 GW to 15. Other groups protested against nuclear power; called for the state to divest from Israel bonds; supported single payer health care; demanded justice for Robert Brooks, who was killed by prison guards in Utica; opposed mandatory vaccines; and, showed support for the Medical Aid in Dying Act. We hear from Laura Shindell of Food and Water Watch opposing the push by Governor Hochul to build more nuclear plants; Pippa Bartolloti as part of the protest over New York State's support for the attacks in Gaza; and Dr. Oliver Fein of Physicians for A National Health Program. By Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

She chairs its Environmental Justice Working Group that is leading the effort to cut fossil fuel use at the 25 campuses of CUNY. Key to their efforts is pressuring the New York Power Authority, which is required by the Build Public Renewables Act to generate more of its electricity from renewable sources. The complex interplay of faculty, staff, students, administrators, city and state government, and the utility is capably explained by Nancy, a professor for 42 years. Today, on the Hudson Mohawk Magazine, First, Mark Dunlea reports on hearings that the New York Power Authority is holding for the public to comment on its recently released draft plan to implement the Build Public Renewables Act. Then, participants of an upcoming protest against the Matisyahu (Maht-is-yah-hu) performance at The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall tell us about why they want this performance canceled. Later on, Roaming Labor Correspondent Willie Terry speaks with Mark Emanatian, Executive Director of The Capital District Area Labor Federation, about their upcoming Thanksgiving Mass Food Distribution. After that, on the Albany Comedy interview Corner, Juan Pantaleon welcomes Local Comedian Alana Gill to the program. Finally, Thom Francis welcomes writer, poet, author, educator, and artist Elizabeth Gordon.
Public Power NY says that the draft plan by the New York Power Authority to build renewable energy falls short of the state's climate goals. Alex Patterson of Public Power NY discusses the plan with Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine. (Press release https://publicpowerny.org/press-releases/nypa-renewables-plan-falls-short/)

Earlier today, the man accused of fatally shooting an NYPD officer in Queens on Monday was charged with first-degree murder. Officer Jonathan Diller was shot by Guy Rivera, from Queens, when the policeman approached his illegally-parked car. This is not Rivera's first interaction with the justice system. His record includes 21 prior arrests for charges including assault, robbery, and possession of a controlled substance. To commemorate officer Diller, Governor Hochul has directed flags on all state buildings to be flown at half-staff. Diller's wake took place this afternoon on Long Island, and hundreds attended including Donald Trump Three presidents will be in town this evening when the Democratic party holds a fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall for President Biden. The NYPD says to expect street closures, with 49th, 50th and 51st streets shut down to traffic. Pedestrian traffic is also limited as of 3 p.m …in the same places. We'll have more on the President's fundraising later on today's show. The initiative is born from a partnership between the New York City Department of Transportation and the New York Power Authority. The great majority of charging stations will be located at 13 new E-Volve New York hubs. Others will be at LaGuardia Airport. They are scheduled to be completed and ready to use between 2025 and 2026. Baseball fans, time to step up to the plate… Today is opening day for Major League Baseball. NIFA was formed over 20 years ago to monitor and oversee Nassau County's finances and to ensure that the County is fiscally strong and has long term plans to have balanced budgets and stable finances to protect taxpayers and residents. And Mr. Kessel's resume is extensive as an expert on energy and consumer issues. He previously served as the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency's Board Chair and as CEO of the New York Power Authority.

In January, Illinois' largest utility released ComEd 2030 – their roadmap for providing clean power for more than 4 million customers. For CEO Gil Quiniones and the company, that means hitting big marks like enabling almost 2 million EVs by 2030, $1 billion in energy assistance for customers, integrating DERs, and procuring more clean power. If done right, ComEd's path would be a big win for the state's clean energy goals, and energy equity in the region. Before joining the utility in 2021, Gil tackled problems of energy and sustainability in another major American city, New York. He served as a part of Mayor Bloomberg's administration working on clean energy and climate policy, and held roles at ConEd and New York Power Authority. Now he's spearheading Chicago's energy transition, with an emphasis on equity for the city's underserved communities. This week, Brad speaks with Gil Quiniones, CEO of ComEd, about taking into account customer affordability and equity as they move ahead with their low-carbon plan. This podcast is produced by GridX. Tenants are urging the RGB to scrap proposed rent hikes of as much as 7% and freeze rents or even roll them back. Then, we will get an update on the just-completed state legislative session in Albany from democratic socialist State Senator Kristin Gonzalez. We talk about the Build Public Renewables Act, the New York Power Authority, the failure to pass Good Cause Eviction and more. In the last segment of the show, we speak with John Teufel, the author of the cover story in this month's Indypendent that takes a look at the completely broken process for how the NYPD disciplines, or not, officers accused of serious misconduct. John has followed the NYPD closely over the past 20 years; we also talk about the surprise resignation last week of Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell.
This week we welcome back Professor Randall Kennedy to help us pay tribute to three principled, uncompromising African American activists, Glen Ford of Black Agenda Report, human rights champion, Randall Robinson, and legendary actor, singer, and activist, Harry Belafonte.Randall Kennedy is Michael R. Klein Professor at Harvard Law School where he teaches courses on contracts, criminal law, and the regulation of race relations. He is the author of several books, including Contracts: Happiness and Heartbreak, For Discrimination: Race, Affirmative Action, and the Law, and Say It Loud! On Race, Law, History, and Culture. You've chosen three very interesting people [Randall Robinson, Harry Belafonte, and Glen Ford]. And I think that one thing that the listeners should keep in mind is that the three that you've chosen are all progressive; they are very different… Because the tent of progressivism should be a large tent— not everybody's going to think the same, and indeed there's going to be some friction between various tendencies among progressives.Randall KennedyI don't think that progressives pay enough attention to the people who have been in their camp. We don't pay enough attention to people who have passed away. We don't pay enough attention to recalling people who have been heroic in our midst. And, again, I say this as a person who is sometimes extremely critical of some of the people that you've mentioned.Randall KennedyWe need people like Glen Ford to pull in one direction uncompromisingly—because the corporate interests always pull in the other direction uncompromisingly—and then we need people who are in between and sometimes have to face the hard realities you've pointed out.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard1. The Wall Street Journal and the Corporate Crime Reporter have announced that, following decades of citizen pressure, and action last year by Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, Senator Richard Blumenthal, and Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin, the Department of Justice has finally created a Corporate Crime Database. Under President Biden, the Justice Department has taken a tougher rhetorical stance on corporate crime, but as Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco notes, the department “cannot ignore the data showing overall decline in corporate criminal prosecutions over the last decade...We need to do more and move faster.” Among civic groups, The Center for Study of Responsive Law and Public Citizen lead the charge to create these corporate rap sheets and are already working to expand and strengthen this new resource for corporate crime data.2. If you live on the East Coast, you have likely experienced dangerous levels of air pollution in the last week due to smoke moving South from Canadian wildfires. Yet, the Lever reports that under current air quality rules, fossil fuel producers will not have to curb their emissions to offset this spike in air pollution because they have successfully lobbied for a loophole protecting themselves in the case of “exceptional events” outside their control. Environmental regulators are currently mulling a new rule to clamp down on this type of air pollution, but face stiff opposition from industry groups.3. The Washington Post reports that, in an exercise of his leverage in the tightly divided Senate, Bernie Sanders has vowed to oppose all Biden health nominees until the administration produces a “comprehensive” plan to lower prescription drug prices. Sanders' role as Chair of the Health Education Labor and Pensions committee means these nominees cannot advance without his blessing. This notably includes Biden's nominee for director of the National Institutes of Health, or NIH. Sanders said “Politicians for years have talked about the high cost of prescription drugs, relatively little has been done, and it's time that we act decisively.”4. The Progressive International has issued a statement decrying the “soft coup” underway against left-wing President Gustavo Petro in Colombia. Their statement reads “Ever since the election of the country's first progressive government...Colombia's traditional powers have been organizing to restore an order marked by extreme inequality, environmental destruction, and state-sponsored violence.” The statement goes on to excoriate officials who have sought to undermine the Petro administration and “former generals, colonels, and members of the Colombian military [who] have not only proclaimed their opposition to President...Petro — but even marched outside Congress to call for a coup d'état against his government.” Signatories to this letter include over 400 political and industrial leaders, including Noam Chomsky, Jeremy Corbyn, Jean Luc Mélenchon, and Former Leftist President of Ecuador Rafael Correa.5. The City, a news site covering New York, reports that food delivery drivers in NYC have won a substantial wage increase. This victory caps off a 3-year long campaign by Los Deliveristas Unidos, and makes New York the “first major U.S. city to establish and implement pay requirements for delivery workers.” These workers currently take home about $11 per hour; this will go up to $17.96 an hour starting July 12th, and will increase to $19.96 per hour by 2025.6. In a surprise decision last week, the Supreme Court voted five-four in favor of Black voters in Alabama who argued the state had unlawfully diluted their voting power, POLITICO reports. Over a quarter of Alabama residents are Black, but the state crammed most Black Alabamians into a single congressional district following the 2020 census, running afoul of the Voting Rights Act. Many expected the ultra-conservative court to reject the challenge and further hollow out the VRA; instead, this ruling could significantly augment the chances of Democrats retaking the House in 2024.7. In Afghanistan, the Taliban has instituted a “highly successful” ban on opium. To cite one example, “In Helmand, by far Afghanistan's largest opium-producing province, the area of poppy cultivation was cut from over 129,000 hectares in 2022 to only 740 as of April 2023.” However, some in the West – including the US Institute for Peace – believe this could have disastrous implications for the Afghan economy. It remains to be seen whether the new government can find a viable economic alternative fast enough to offset these losses. The Taliban had previously banned opium cultivation when they held power in 2000 and 2001, and achieved a 90% reduction at that time.8. New York Governor Kathy Hochul is again licking her wounds after her nominee for the New York Power Authority was blocked by the State Senate, in a similar fashion as her nominee for the New York Court of Appeals, the highest court in the state. Justin Driscoll, whom Hochul had appointed on an interim basis and was seeking to appoint permanently, raised red flags with New York Senate Democrats due to his ingratiation in conservative politics – Driscoll is a registered Republican who has ties to figures like Chris Christie and John Cornyn. Driscoll also opposed the Build Public Renewables Act and has been embroiled in accusations of racial discrimination during his time as general counsel for the Power Authority. On June 9th, POLITICO reported that Senate Democrats will not schedule a vote for Driscoll.9. Projectionists at an Alamo Drafthouse movie theater in New York City have filed an NLRB petition to unionize. However, instead of coming to the negotiating table, the theater chain sent out an internal email “notifying staff of the company's intention to do away with the projectionist position and replace it with a more expansive ‘technical engineer' role.” This reflects how the struggle for labor rights in entertainment goes far beyond Hollywood writers and actors. This from 1010 Wins.10. Last week, Henry Kissinger – President Nixon's controversial National Security Advisor and alleged war criminal – celebrated his 100th birthday. The Real News Network reports that this centennial bash was attended by some of the most prominent diplomatic figures in the country, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and head of the international development agency USAID, Samantha Power. Jonathan Guyer of VOX, documented many other attendees as well, including Larry Summers, Robert Kraft, General David Petreaus, CIA Director Bill Burns, and Michael Bloomberg. The gang's all here! There's a lecture series and other offerings including a Young Mariners summer program for kids and a boatbuilding program. The museum is developing a new exhibit on lighthouses that opens on October 20. Emily Sullivan, the museum's curator, is interviewed in this episode. The lighthouse at Verona Beach in New York was one of three built on Oneida Lake to aid navigation in conjunction with the opening of the Barge Canal as part of the Erie Canal system in 1918. In 1920, New York State created its own department for managing navigational aids, including a program for hiring lighthouse keepers. New York is the only state to ever maintain its own aids to navigation department. Verona Beach Lighthouse, New York. Photo by Jeremy D'Entremont. The Verona Beach Lighthouse Association was formed in 2002 to save the lighthouse, which had become a popular site for dumping trash. More than 150 truckloads of debris were removed and the windows and entry door were replaced. As part of their “Reimagine the Canal Program,” the New York Power Authority and Canal Corporation had Verona Beach Lighthouse renovated and illuminated with LED lighting in 2021. Last month, ComEd announced it is spending $113 million a year on “income-tested programs” to slash energy use and energy bills for those who can least afford them, while combating climate change. In this episode of Grid Talk, host Marty Rosenberg talks with Gil Quiniones who is the ComEd CEO. They'll talk about initiatives to make sure disadvantaged communities and historically underserved communities are prioritized as the utility pursues decarbonization.“It's not just really deploying technologies. It's how do we engage the community in the process of deploying those technologies in terms of STEM programs with the local schools as well as opportunities for workforce development, whether it's directly for trade-type, craft-type jobs or being a utility professional engineer or scientist.”Quiniones talks about opportunities related to the federal government's $80 billion infrastructure spend on energy. Investing in communities is top priority.“We want to make sure that we're putting our customers at the center of this transition.” You'll also hear what ComEd is adding is it reimagines the grid. Gil Quiniones was named CEO of ComEd in November of 2021 and oversees utility decisions that impact more than four million customers. QUESTION PRESENTED:Whether, in 42 U.S.C. § 7411(d), an ancillary provision of the Clean Air Act, Congress constitutionally authorized the Environmental Protection Agency to issue significant rules — including those capable of reshaping the nation's electricity grids and unilaterally decarbonizing virtually any sector of the economy — without any limits on what the agency can require so long as it considers cost, nonair impacts and energy requirements.Date Proceedings and Orders (key to color coding)Apr 29 2021 | Petition for a writ of certiorari filed. All too often, conversations about electric vehicles (EVs) and the major role they will play in global transportation focus on technology and policy. While both are obviously critical for EVs to deliver their environmental and economic benefits to society, these discussions often leave out the most important factor in the success of electrified transportation: actual drivers. Navigant Consulting’s Derek Jones and New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) Doug McMahon join us to explain why it’s so critical to focus on the priorities, concerns, and experiences of drivers in order to unlock the enormous benefits of electrified transportation.
It’s Monday 4th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC ORDER BOOK CLOSED IN NORWAY AFTER BIG DEMAND AND LOW PRICE According to CarksUK.net "The Hyundai Kona Electric order book has been closed in Norway after 20,000 expressions of interest in Hyundai’s new electric SUV are made. Just 2,500 Kona EVs will be available this year in Norway. So, for the time being, Hyundai in Norway is closing their order book whilst they try and figure out how to deal with demand. Demand which is going to be further fuelled with a list price in Norway of just £30,000. That price of £30,000 for the Hyundai Kona in Norway isn’t for the entry-level, smaller battery and motor model, but for the full fat 64kWh battery, chunky 210bhp electric motor, 300 mile range and 100kW rapid charge ability. Even adding extras doesn’t cost a fortune, with a leather interior adding under £1k to the price, and adding leather and a Panoramic roof just under £2k. They plan to re-open the order book on 2 July. In addition to state funding, the program will also seek to create private sector partnerships through 2025 to aggressively accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles throughout New York State." according to ELECTRIC CARS REPORT: "EVolve NY is a key pillar of the Governor’s Charge NY 2.0 initiative, which aims to encourage and support electric car adoption by increasing the number of charging stations statewide, and will help bring the state closer to its goal of installing at least 10,000 Vcharging stations by the end of 2021." https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/06/new-york-state-will-spend-250-million-to-build-more-ev-charging/ QUEBEC LOOKS TO SPEED UP CHARGER INSTALLS WITH NEW BILL And heading North, in Canada, InsideEVs has news of more investment in chargers: "Currently there are some 133 public DC chargers installed, but in 10 years there are 1,600 more planned to handle growth of electric cars. The government of Québec expects that the number of plug-ins will increase from 24,694 (as of end of March), to 100,000 by 2020, 300,000 by 2026 and one million by 2030." https://insideevs.com/quebec-looks-to-speed-up-charger-installs-with-new-bill/ TESLA WON’T LEASE YOU A MODEL 3 UNTIL 2019 Torque Report says: "Generally it’s recommended to lease an electric car rather than outright buy one, since the residual values for electric cars aren’t as great as their gas powered counterparts. Well if you’re hoping to lease a Tesla Model 3, you’ll have to wait until probably some time in 2019 to do so." On Twitter, Elon Musk said: "Leasing negatively effects Tesla cash flow, so we prob won’t offer Model 3 leases for 6 to 9 months. Loan financing is a better deal anyway, as bank conservatism for new car models is v conservative about residual value, but Teslas have always had strong residual value." https://www.thetorquereport.com/tesla/tesla-wont-lease-you-a-model-3-until-2019/ YOUR AVERAGE CAR PAYMENT IS NOW A RECORD $523 PER MONTH Talking of leasing, and Jalopnik reports on a CNBC piece: "Car buyers are taking out loans with exceptionally long, record-setting terms—in some cases approaching 96 months—and yet that still hasn’t stopped average monthly payments from continuing to grow. Now, CNBC reports, the typical loan payment for new cars has reached a record $523 per month. in the first quarter of 2018, the average monthly loan payment for a new vehicle increased $15 compared to a year ago, and now it’s at $523." That CNBC source article says: "The credit analysis company’s review of new and open auto loans for the first three months of this year found buyers of new cars, trucks and SUVs borrowed an average of $31,453 — also a record high. Experian based its review off an analysis of 4.7 million auto loans, according to CNBC. The increase in monthly payments for new vehicles is not surprising given the rise in interest rates. In the first quarter, the average interest rate for a new vehicle loan was 5.17 percent, up 31 basis points compared with a year ago, according to Experian." https://jalopnik.com/your-average-car-payment-is-now-a-record-523-per-month-1826450154 TESLA MODEL 3 LONG RANGE HITS THE DYNO, PUTS DOWN 340 RWHP Finally, Auto Evolution have some dyno news!: The Long Range is what Mountain Pass Performance ordered from Tesla, and three hours after delivery, the company specialized in aftermarket parts for the Model 3 took the car to On Point Dyno for testing. “We were lucky to be able to receive our car on the first day of mass deliveries,” explains the uploader, adding that the car had an 80% charge when it was dynoed." “After a bit of fussing around tricking the traction control system,” the Model 3 Long Range “put down 340 WHP and about the same amount of torque.” Considering that Tesla quotes an estimated 306 horsepower and 415 pound-feet, that’s not bad at all. But there’s more to this dyno session that what meets the eye, as follows: “The X-Axis displays the motor’s RPM, and torque displayed is torque at the motor, not at the wheels.” I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. The system includes four historic canals: the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca. Spanning 524 miles, the waterway links the Hudson River, Lake Champlain, Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes and Lake Erie via the Niagara River. Dubbed the Barge Canal in 1918, today’s Canal system turns 100 years old and is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. Three-quarters of the 365-mile Erie Canalway Trail from Albany to Buffalo is a dedicated off-road trail, much of it along the canals former towpath. Other off-road sections will be completed as part of Governor Cuomo’s Empire State Trail initiative, which will include the Erie Canalway Trail and portions of the Champlain Canalway Trail, and at 750 miles will be the longest multi-use recreational trail network in the Nation upon its completion in 2020. America’s first power plant was built in Manhattan. The first transmission of electricity occurred between Niagara Falls and Buffalo. And the first public power organization was founded in New York State. Today, that power provider, the New York Power Authority -- or NYPA -- is working to digitize the state’s grid end-to-end. We’ll talk with NYPA CEO Gil Quiniones about his push to create a "digital foundry" where the next generation of electricity inventors and innovators can re-imagine the grid. In the second half of the show, Katherine Hamilton gives us an update from the World Economic Forum, where thinkers from all across the globe are also re-imagining the energy system -- while also grappling with a new world order in the wake of America's election. Make sure to come to our live show on February 3 in New York City. We'll be at the Columbia Energy Symposium debating the latest developments in energy and cleantech: http://www.cuenergysymposium.com/ This podcast is sponsored by KACO New Energy, a leading solar inverter company with superior engineering and unmatched customer service: http://kaco-newenergy.com/
Episode #22: We are joined by Adam Brudnick of the FTMBA ’19 program. In this episode, he shares with us what initially drew him to a career in consulting at McKinsey and ultimately to Berkeley Haas. Back in high school, He was inspired to work at the intersection of science and business after watching An Inconvenient Truth which led him to apply to Wesleyan University, well known for its emphasis in arts and sciences. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, Economics, and Music and joined McKinsey after a summer internship at the firm. Adam went on to join the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to further his career in learning how to accelerate the deployment of technologies to solve rising climate challenges. We hear a brief history of the New York Power Authority, how the public-benefit corporation is run by the state, and how Adam helped NYPA focus on initiatives with multiplier effects that pay economic dividends. We delve into how the multiplier effect works and how we should think about creating initiatives that spur additional, interdependent economic activity. He “got the bug” in creating things of value at NYPA, and came to the Bay Area to create and help others create more things of value. While at Haas, Adam is serving as a Venture Partner of the Dorm Room Fund, a seven-person student-run VC firm that invests $20,000 in pre-seed student ventures across the country.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations
