In this episode, with sit with Erin Wathen who shares her deeply personal and reflective journey of faith, ministry, and community leadership. She recounts how her path toward ministry wasn't clear-cut but rather a mix of gradual realizations and moments of connection. Initially drawn to nonprofit work after college, Erin found herself surrounded by a seminary community that felt like a natural fit for her passions—writing, teaching, public speaking, and counseling. As she embraced ministry, Erin discovered that it allowed her to explore all the roles she had envisioned for herself while also making a meaningful impact in various communities. Erin also reflects on the progressive values she grew up with in the Disciples of Christ church and how they shaped her views on inclusivity and leadership. She emphasizes the importance of creating a church environment that fosters genuine community and spiritual growth without shame or judgment. Erin's experiences as a female pastor in predominantly male spaces and her passion for making church accessible and relevant to a wide range of people, especially in today's increasingly remote and connected world, offer valuable insights for listeners navigating their own faith and community-building journeys. Takeaways: Many individuals' professional and spiritual journeys can be unpredictable, shaped by diverse experiences and unexpected turns. It's often in hindsight that these experiences come together, leading to meaningful roles and purposes. There is a growing movement toward inclusivity within faith communities, particularly in promoting women and other marginalized groups into leadership roles, challenging traditional patriarchal norms.Cultural shifts, technology, and increased societal secularism have led to declining church involvement, particularly among younger generations. Many feel the church no longer aligns with their modern lives or values. Many people, particularly those from marginalized communities, experience religious trauma, often stemming from exclusionary or shame-based teachings. Creating safe, inclusive spaces is key to fostering healing and spiritual growth.sense of belonging is essential to the spiritual journey. Faith communities can provide meaningful relationships and support, offering both personal and collective growth.Churches have increasingly embraced technology, offering remote worship services to reach individuals who cannot attend in person. This helps build wider communities but also underscores the importance of in-person fellowship.Modern faith communities are often caught between maintaining traditional forms of worship and evolving to reflect contemporary social and cultural changes, such as gender equality and the use of technology.

Erin Wathen is a food addiction counselor and the author of Why Can't I Stick to My Diet? How To End the Food Drama, a hybrid autobiography/science and fitness book rolled into one self-deprecating, pop-culture-referencing, fully-relatable manual.   Like most of us in the health coaching world, Erin has a story that moved her into this space, and in the book, she speaks to her decades-long struggle with sugar, overeating, and emotional eating. Because, despite her wealth of knowledge on diet and exercise, Erin was not at peace with her body. She was always on a diet and yet never reached her goal weight. Through a lot of trial and error, Erin found her last diet, which became her food plan and the basis of her book.   Her philosophy today is that health isn't a number on the scale or how often we exercise, but our lives as a whole. So she partners with her clients to work on solutions that fit into their lifestyle, empowering them to live their healthiest life in our crazy world.   So, why is it so difficult to stick to a diet?   Erin realized that her lifelong struggle with her weight wasn't due to a lack of exercise, but the food she was consuming and, more importantly, the emotions she wasn't dealing with that lead to choosing that food.   And in trying to find a better diet, Erin realized that the best diet is no diet at all. You need true nutrition in your life. That's why, in her book, Erin doesn't suggest a diet – she offers a simple yet comprehensive four-step food plan that anyone can follow to start eating real food that's really nourishing.   Because, as I like to say, diet is a four-letter word. It's not until you make nutrition part of your life that things start to work.   Sugar Addiction   In chapter two of Erin's book,  A Brain Held Hostage, she writes about the old commercial of the frying pan and the egg; “this is your brain on drugs.”   I love this analogy because that's what sugar does to us, and the more sugar we consume, the more sugar we want. Of course, when you walk into a grocery store these days, 95% of it is sugar-laden crap – so it's no wonder that people in our society are struggling with sugar addiction!   And not only that, this food is meticulously marketed and designed to make it even more appealing, especially to kids. Because they know that if you get ‘em hooked young, they'll be a customer for life (of course, the first hit isn't free in this case).   --     Resources: Learn more at erinwathenwellness.com Read: Why Can't I Stick to My Diet? Today our expert guest is Erin Wathen, a holistic health coach, food abuse counselor, and the inspiring author of Why Can't I Stick to My Diet?: How To End The Food Drama. Her philosophy is, simply put, that health isn't a number on the scale or how often we exercise, but how we live our lives as a whole.   As a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and a Food Addiction Counselor, Erin was well versed in the science behind health. As a Certified Spinning® Instructor, Vinyasa Yoga instructor, and Classical Pilates instructor, she understood the mechanics of health and fitness as well. But, still, she was not at peace with her body for many years. She had all of this knowledge and was always on a diet, yet she never reached her goal weight.   However, through a lot of trial and error, Erin found true nutrition to be the missing piece of the puzzle. It was then that Erin started her last diet, which ultimately became her food plan and the basis of her health coaching program and her book.   Erin realized that what she was taught was okay to eat was, well... not okay! Growing up in the 90s, people would demonize fat with the drop of a hat, but no one questioned Diet Coke as a staple in your diet. Obviously, the pendulum has shifted a little in the nutritional world today, but there's still a mass normalization of sugar in our society – and it's hurting us.   “Sugar affects our mood, affects our health, and affects our body in all of these amazingly negative ways – it's just completely normalized in our society,” Erin says.   The truth is that most of us are addicted to sugar. So many of us wake up and immediately go to sugary coffee drinks, then we snack on sugary treats throughout the day, and in the evening, we drink beer or wine. It's so easy and so accepted that most of us don't even realize we've become addicted.   So how do you know if you have a sugar addiction? Well, if you don't consume any of those things, anything with added sugar, how do you feel? Chances are you feel pretty crappy.   So, what can we do about this addiction?   Take stock of what you're drinking – high fructose corn syrup is the easiest way to get more sugar into your diet. Stay away from the middle aisles in the grocery store. Don't add extra sugar to your drinks, meals, or snacks. Avoid fake sugars; they trick your body into thinking it's had sugar, which has its own negative impacts. Don't go on a diet – embrace a lifestyle change!   One of the biggest reasons that people can't stick to their diets, Erin says, is the mindset they adopt when they start. They're doing the diet with the intent to stop eventually, instead of adopting healthy lifestyle changes that will make them healthier in the long-run. It's a juice cleanse today so that you can go back to eating things that are bad for you tomorrow.   On top of that, we don't address the emotional component of why we have unhealthy eating habits in the first place; the why behind our sugar addiction or other bad habits.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway   “Just be very aware of how important food is in our life versus the people in your life – because this isn't that big of a deal. It's just food! And when we put food in front of everyone else, we're missing out on an opportunity to connect with others, to make good memories, and to really find out what's going on with ourselves.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Growing up in a beach town in California, Erin Wathen was always an active kid, competed on sports teams in high school, and taught aerobics in college. She has run 1/2 marathons, finished a Tough Mudder and many 6 hour Spin rides for Charity. A graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and a Food Addiction Counselor (INFACT), Erin is also a Certified Spinning® Instructor (STAR 3), Vinyasa Yoga instructor (200 Hour) and Classical Pilates instructor. Even with all of her knowledge and exercise, she still was not at peace with her own body. Erin found nutrition to be the missing piece of the puzzle, as she was always on a diet and yet never at her goal weight. Through a lot of trial and error, she found her last diet. The last diet became her food plan and the basis of her book “Why Can’t I Stick to My Diet? : How To End The Food Drama”. Erin's philosophy simply put; Health isn’t a number on the scale or how often we exercise, but our lives as whole. Together we will work on solutions that fit into your lifestyle. I will help you live your healthiest life in our crazy world. Malala Yousafzai was only fourteen years old when she was targeted by the Taliban as a threat to their mysogynistic ideologies.  Living through an assassination attempt on her life, Malala went on to model power, peace, poise and fearlessness in ways that we could do well to learn from.   In this episode, we're joined by Rev. Erin Wathen, Senior Minister of Saint Andrew Christian Church in Olathe, KS, and author of the brand new book, Persist and Resist: Faith and the Fight for Equality.  Erin will talk about those people who are inspiring her in the ways of resistance and persistence, from teachers on strike to Malala to men who volunteer to lead Sunday School classes.  Shanna and Erin talk a little more about what it's like to be Senior Ministers who are also women, and share some really practical amazing "So what" thoughts for those who want to take the fight for gender equality seriously. We'll release the full interview with Erin next Monday.  What you hear here is but a foretaste of the amazing kick-ass awesomeness that she is, and that we got to share in with her.   Oh yeah, and you won't want to miss our third co-host on this episode!  It's a surprise... #resistandpersist  #womanifesto
