“If I have the power to make myself sick, I have the power to make myself well.” That's what my friend Melody told herself when she was battling health issues early in her life. After a powerful experience of changing her health, she realized there was more to self-empowerment than she had been raised to believe. She is an amazing example of taking her own journey of resilience and grit and turning it into a path for grace for all girls. I have followed Melody's work for years and to have her on the show is such an honor!  Melody Pourmoradi, the author of “XOXO From A Girl Who Gets It“, Certified Empowerment Coach, Twin Girl Mama, and the creator of the GiRLiFE Certification Program truly believes that empowered women empower girls – so much so that she's made it her life's work to train passionate women to claim true empowerment for themselves so that they can share it with the girls in their lives and pave the way for our future female leaders. Melody studied Business and Psychology at York University in Toronto while working in her family business, Robely Trading. Operating in two such different worlds proved her love for all things human potential AND business. She quickly learned that whatever she would be doing in the world would involve both things. After university she started exploring the world of coaching and other healing modalities and starting aligning herself with leaders and spaces that would help her grow that part of her interest. She studied at IPEC Coaching, an ICF accredited program and then moved on to also learn at Institute for Integrative Nutrition {IIN}. In this episode, Melody shares the stories behind how she created the GirlLifeEmpowerment movement, why it matters so much to remind young women how powerful they are, and what is possible when you follow your gut and go for the thing you really want. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn in this episode: How changing her belief systems changed Melody holistically (4:33) Ways to overcome anxiety (15:29) Why loving yourself helps to build self confidence (23:10) The power of influencing young girls through books (31:04) Join us for this episode and expand your knowledge! Hormone Health After 40 with Maria Claps

Few people discuss what happens to your hormones after menopause. In fact, there seems to be a lot of secrecy among women in this stage of life about their hormonal health. That's why I'm so excited to have Maria Claps with me today to shed light on this important topic.   About Maria Claps Maria Claps is a certified health coach, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition practitioner, and mom to four grown boys. After receiving inadequate healthcare that did nothing to address her perimenopause problems, Maria enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) in order to help herself. After that, Maria pursued several hormone-centric trainings including Dr. Sara Gottfried's practitioner hormone training program, and the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition program, and she also has been mentored by hormone scholar and scientist Dr. Lindsey Berkson. Maria helps women all over the world as a perimenopause and menopause mentor. She is a DUTCH hormone test expert. She also teaches practitioners how to help midlife women thrive in a mentorship program called Midlife Hormone Mastery. When she's not working with clients, Maria can be found trekking through Italy, at farmers' markets locally, or in the kitchen creating recipes.   Hormonal Changes Don't Mean the End of Your Lifestyle Throughout this conversation, Maria shares how her experience sent her on a quest to better understand the signs and symptoms of perimenopause. Insomnia, weight gain, and unstable moods led her to solutions that few others in the health field were discussing.  Over the years, Maria discovered the truth that lies behind many common menopause myths. In reality, you don't have to accept all the changes. Maria explains that hormonal changes are not necessarily the same thing as aging. By recognizing that the way you feel now is a symptom, not the root of the problem, you can take informed actions. Much of the way people think of menopause is very negative. Maria explains how cultural expectations of older women derive from a false narrative. Sadly, this has led to a culture of silence around the topic. Maria works to help women open up about their experiences. When this happens, women can take action and regain control over their lives.   Understanding Your Hormones Before, During, and After Menopause Maria stresses that living a healthy lifestyle will help ease your transition to perimenopause, menopause, and beyond. Diet and nutrition, as well as exercise, go a long way. That being said, there is no guarantee that it will still go smoothly. Many of Maria's clients do this and still struggle.  It can be scary to experience these changes in your body. There is a sense of loss of control when you don't fully understand how these changes affect you. That's why Maria stresses the role of education. When you understand your body well, you know what is normal, what isn't, and what you can do about it.  Hormone testing, particularly the DUTCH Test, is a major tool Maria employs. It gives a complete picture of what the hormones are doing and how they are changing. Maria has seen the value of these tests to highlight potential problems and establish healthy regimens for her clients. What can you start doing today to prepare for menopause? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!   In This Episode How to recognize the signs of perimenopause [8:30] Common myths about menopause [11:45] Changing the cultural narrative of aging and menopause [16:40] What to expect from an optimal menopause experience [21:45] The connection between the premenopausal experience and menopause itself [27:35] The critical link between mindset and menopause [33:15] The value of comprehensive hormone testing for post-menopausal women [36:45] Practical tips you can start using today to reduce menopause symptoms [48:50]   Quotes “As far as becoming this overweight asexual woman who isolates herself and can't contribute to the world anymore, that's completely false.” [12:39] “You are going to have some changes. Your body is going to change. Things are going to change, but it's really manageable.” [21:05] “These things are quite fixable. I've seen so many before and afters. Kate Chapman is a performer, writer, visual artist, teacher, and coach. Her Broadway performing credits include Mary Poppins, Les Misérables, Pajama Game, Sweet Smell of Success, Saturday Night Fever; also, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular (Mrs. Claus for 5 seasons), Shakespeare in the Park, Lincoln Center and countless others. A 24-year member of the Tony award-winning Broadway Inspirational Voices (BIV), Kate sings with BIV at many events each year, works with BIV's outreach programs at Covenant House and The Ronald McDonald House, and is the organization's copywriter. Kate holds a Bachelor of Music Education (Boston University), a Master of Arts in Health Arts and Sciences (Goddard College), and trained with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and Wayfinder Life Coach Training.   Kate is an exuberant spirit who combines her Broadway talents with health and life coach training to help people explore play and make them feel better. We had a very fun conversation that sometimes wanders into different directions!   We speak at length about Kate Chapman's Broadway career and the physical expectations placed on her throughout, whether or not those expectations kept her healthy (spoiler alert: they didn't). However, because of her Broadway career, Kate was invited to be a part of Broadway Inspirational Voices in her late 20s, discovering gospel music and becoming involved in BIV's outreach programs that use music to support and inspire homeless and runaway youth, as well as sick children and their families.   Kate found Goddard after training with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). She studied the self-healing model, medical anthropology (“how did we get to…a very harsh medical system that deals with quieting symptoms and not causal issues?”), and how talk shows are created.   Kate wrote A Pixie's Prescription: A Fun Toolkit for a Feel Better Life, available now on Amazon. Her friend told her “it's a wonderful toilet read.” In the book, Kate explores aspects of her life that she tries to keep at the forefront that make her feel better (such as curiosity, play, relationships, home environment, health, exercise, education). She illustrates each aspect with an anecdote from her life, such as learning play from Marvin Hamlisch (composer of A Chorus Line, Sweet Smell of Success).   For more about Kate visit the following: Kate's website: www.thekatechapman.com A Pixie's Prescription: A Fun Toolkit for a Feel Better Life: https://www.amazon.com/Pixies-Prescription-Toolkit-Feel-Better/dp/0692285563 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/KateChapman Kate Chapman Health: https://www.facebook.com/KateChapmanHealth Recommendations: Covenant House: https://www.covenanthouse.org/ Broadway Inspirational Voices: https://broadwayinspirationalvoices.org/ Nancy Norbeck, Follow Your Curiosity: https://fycuriosity.com/noticing-our-patterns-with-kate-chapman/

She is the author of National Bestseller “Eat Clean Play Dirty,” along with Sakara co-founder Whitney Tingle. Hailing from the spiritual mecca of Sedona, Arizona, Danielle came to New York City as a chemistry collegiate. Supporting herself through school as an actress and model, she suffered from a dysfunctional cycle of body image issues and uncomfortable weight fluctuations from yo-yo dieting, leaving her dissatisfied with her own body. Danielle thought the key to health and happiness was tracking calories and cutting carbs to lose pounds. After studying a pre-medicine track, she realized that medicine couldn't heal her issues with food. A desire to learn more about using food as medicine led her to study at the renowned Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN), in order to leverage the power of food as medicine. After graduating from the program and learning to transform her own relationship to her body and food, Danielle combined her personal experience with her nutrition expertise to create a philosophy that has helped thousands of individuals change their lives through the healing powers of food. DuBoise and Tingle have been honored in Forbes' 30 under 30, MindBodyGreen's 100 Women in Wellness and Oprah's SuperSoul 100. Why is it so hard to stick to healthy eating habits? Why is it that when I plan to only have 3 or 4 Oreos I end up eating the entire sleeve? Why am I feeling like crap when I am eating the foods that I enjoy and love? Does this sound familiar? This was pretty much Shannon's narrative before meeting with Laura! Healthy eating should be easier than it is. The reason it is so hard is because of the emotional ties that we have to food. There is a psychological connection to our food choices and why foods can hold so much power over us. In this interview, Laura B. Folkes takes Shannon on an emotional rollercoaster of a live coaching session. Laura helps Shannon to identify what her biggest challenges are when it comes to eating in alignment with her goals. Shannon is honest and open with Laura as this deep conversation unravels some of Shannon's demons. Laura and Shannon talk about how everyone's journey is different and the goal is not to feel like a prisoner or feel bad for making the food choices we make, but to always have a choice and not turn to food for the emotional reasons that we might have. We can achieve any goal when we prioritize our mental health! Before jumping into today's interview, Shannon shares the journey she has had this week after coming home from vacation. Shannon is slowly getting back into her routine and is listening to her body as she adjusts. She also shares the recent Reiki session she had with previous guest Liz Carlin and how identifying the chakra blockages she is experiencing is helping to enhance her spiritual connection. It's a crazy week with 2 puppies in the house but Shannon is still able to be there for her Journiers and answer the questions that came in this week! Shannon talks workout, vegetables, and Amare products. Make sure you are following the Instagram page to submit questions and see exciting updates!  Get To Know Our Guest!Laura B. Laura is a facilitator of the research-based Truce with Food® process, which helps clients achieve sustainable results by getting to the bottom of why they fall off track and aren't able to remain consistent.
