They also revised the preceding quarter down to 1.1% contraction, with both figures putting us in deep recession. ANZ Economist Henry Russell told Andrew Dickens the Government should be investing more, if it weren't dealing with its own deficits. One of the first things every astronomy student learns is the H-R diagram — a plot of stars based on their temperature and true brightness. From that plot, astronomers can learn a lot about both individual stars and all stars. One of the diagram's creators was Ejnar Hertzsprung — the “H” in H-R. He was born 150 years ago today, in Denmark. Hertzsprung studied chemical engineering, and worked in that field for several years. But he was more interested in stars. So even though he didn't have any training, he became an astronomer. Hertzsprung quickly found a relationship between a star's brightness and its color or temperature. When he plotted this relationship for many stars, he discovered some interesting patterns. Most of the stars fell along a gentle curve, known as the main sequence. Such stars are in the prime of life, as the Sun is, steadily “burning” the hydrogen in their cores to make helium. Other stars fell to the upper right of this line — giant stars beyond the main sequence. And still others fell to the lower left — the faint corpses of stars. Among other things, the diagram tells astronomers how stars evolve. And plotting an individual star reveals its mass, its stage of life, and more. Hertzsprung published his results in 1911. American astronomer Henry Russell reported similar findings two years later. Today, their work forms the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram — one of the most important tools in astronomy.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

The American situation comedy that ran from 1950 to 1952 on NBC radio, created by Fibber McGee & Molly co-creator/writer Don Quinn. The series was adapted into a CBS television comedy (1954–55) produced by ITC Entertainment and Television Programs of America. Here is the background and the conception of the series from Wikipedia sources. British husband-and-wife actors Ronald Colman and Benita Hume starred in both versions of the show. Quinn developed the show after he had decided to leave Fibber McGee & Molly in the hands of his protégé Phil Leslie. The Halls of Ivy's audition program featured radio veteran Gale Gordon (then co-starring in Our Miss Brooks) and Edna Best in the roles that ultimately went to the Colmans, who demonstrated a flair for radio comedy during the late 1940s recurring roles on The Jack Benny Program. The Halls of Ivy featured Ronald Colman as William Todhunter Hall, the president of small, Midwestern Ivy College, and Benita Hume as his wife, Victoria, a former British musical comedy star who sometimes feels the tug of her former profession, and followed their interactions with students, friends, and college trustees. Others in the cast included Herb Butterfield as testy board chairman Clarence Wellman, Willard Waterman (then starring as Harold Peary's successor as The Great Gildersleeve) as board member John Merriweather, and Bea Benaderet, Elizabeth Patterson, and Gloria Gordon as the Halls' maids. Alan Reed (television's Fred Flintstone) appeared periodically as the stuffy English teacher, Professor Heaslip. Other actors who appeared included Virginia Gregg, Lee Patrick, Jean Vander Pyl, Rolfe Sedan, Sidney Miller, William Tracy, Sam Edwards, Arthur Q. Bryan, Barton Yarborough, James Gleason, Jerry Hausner and other actors. The series ran 109 half-hour radio episodes from January 6, 1950, to June 25, 1952, with Quinn, Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee writing many of the scripts and giving free if even more sophisticated play to Quinn's knack for language play, inverted cliches and swift puns (including the show's title and lead characters), a knack he'd shown for years writing Fibber McGee & Molly. Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee continued as a writing team; their best-known play is Inherit the Wind. Cameron Blake, Walter Brown Newman, Robert Sinclair, and Milton and Barbara Merlin became writers for the program as well. In subject matter, the program was often notably ahead of its time, forward looking, and willing to tackle controversial topics. "Hell Week," first broadcast on January 2, 1952, boldly addressed the unforeseen dangers of college fraternity hazing. "The Leslie Hoff Painting" (September 27, 1950) and "The Chinese Student" (February 7, 1950) both openly countenanced and dealt with instances of racial bigotry. Another episode centered on an unmarried student's pregnancy. But listeners were surprised to discover that the episode of January 24, 1951, "The Goya Bequest"—a story examining the bequest of a Goya painting that was suspected of being a fraud hyped by its late owner to avoid paying customs duties when bringing to the United States—was written by Colman, who poked fun at his accomplishment while taking a rare turn giving the evening's credits at the show's conclusion. A further treat was the episode of November 22, 1951, in which Jack Benny appeared as himself, in a storyline involving his accepting Victoria Hall's invitation to perform for charity at Ivy College. The sponsor was the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company ("The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous"). Nat Wolff produced and directed. Henry Russell music director.

“My belief is not what the business is, but in people, that's one thing I've learned throughout my career is teaming up with the right people.” – Henry Russell (USNA ‘03) “I'm a true believer that the strength of your ally determines the strength of your outcome. It's never about me, it's the team that we put together and about the people who are out there helping us achieve the mission. And I'm just one cog in that wheel.”– John Reeves (USNA ‘03) This episode is all about two Academy Grads coming together to build a real estate investment company 18 years after they first met at the Naval Academy. John Reeves (USNA ‘03) has eleven years of real estate experience as a property manager, investor, real estate broker, and licensed contractor and completed multiple combat tours before building his own residential real estate company. Henry Russell (USNA ‘03) has eleven years of experience working in the financial industry and completed multiple combat tours, before he began his career in finance, assisting and managing several private investments in both the public and private sectors. As best friends, Henry Russell (USNA ‘03) was John's pathway to a diploma at the Academy and John Reeves (USNA ‘03) was Henry's pathway to entrepreneurship after the Academy. Together, they built Russell Reeves Capital. In this episode, we discuss: Why John and Henry decided to start a real estate investment company together What Russell Reeves Capital does How John and Henry leverage their skill sets to create financial freedom for others Why partnerships and teamwork are essential to success in life and business John and Henry also share stories from their U.S. Naval Academy days, including how they met and their experiences serving in the military. As we continue our journey at REAL Kombucha, we love meeting and working with people that really seem to be on the same wavelength. Take this week's guests, for example. The folks at the Belazu Ingredient Company specialise in foodie items that can turn a good dish into something truly exceptional. They talk regularly about living life in full flavour, and about how life is too short for bland food. Living life in full flavour is something we can all aspire, so for this episode, we were delighted to invite their product specialist, Bob Curbishley, and their innovation chef, Henry Russell, to chat about what living a flavourful really means.Over the next hour or so, we'll be discussing how travel inspires culinary creativity, and how a little bit of that creativity can also fire the imagination and get the mind traveling, even when you're stuck at home. We'll also discuss the origins of Belazu, way back in Borough Market when they were known as The Fresh Olive Company, and how inspiring flavours and high quality have been at the heart of what they do from day one. Bob talks about how he became an olive oil sommelier, and also explains why it's worth spending a bit extra on a good balsamic, while Henry tells us a bit about what an innovation chef does, answering the time-honoured question: what can I do with a jar of pesto that doesn't involve pasta?Along the way, we take in all kinds of food history and even find time for a kombucha tasting, asking Henry how he goes about pairing our fermented drinks with his ingredients. It's worth noting, too, that the delicious new range of nuts he talks about at the end of the episode is now on the shelves in Waitrose, not too far from our own REAL Kombucha bottles, so you can put both into your shopping basket next time you're shopping and try the pairing for yourself. In short, this is a fast and friendly ramble through all things flavourful, on which you're more than welcome to eavesdrop. Strap on your ear goggles, fire up your imaginations… things are about to get very tasty indeed.
