As we've been saying this past week, our hearts go out to those affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles. Our dear (Bryan) left to be with family this past week. He's totally safe and sound, but this means that he's not with us in The Carriage House this week. But we've got a VERY special guest host in his place, pardon me. It's none other than our dear friend Justin Kirk! Justin joins Ronna to give advice on dealing with trust issues with a partner and whether or not to reconnect with a previously cut-off old friend who's now having serious health issues. Of all our live shows, the one that's really the highlight of each year is our Valentine's Lonely Hearts Live extravaganza. And in 2025 you better believe it'll be back and better than ever! Join us on Sunday February 16 at 7pm ET / 4pm PT for the festivities. More details to follow (guests, games, giveaways, and more). Alicia Silverstone and Krysten Ritter, directed and written by Amy Heckerling with costumes by Mona May! Sign me all the way up! Vampire roommates? Falling in love hijinks and camp vampire gore?! Yes, Mikey told me about this as he was watching for the first time and immediately wanted to do a podcast on it. I'm so glad he did because this is just what I was looking for. This really proves the power of just comedic writing and an incredible cast. We get into our favorite looks, how Sigourney Weaver is EVERYTHING, and other camp films in the vampire horror comedy genre. Off-topic rants include: Riverdale, why Amy Heckerling needs to make a tv series, and who we would want to be in the world of fictional vamp characters---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Terence is back with me this week to discuss Interview with the Vampire Season 2, Episode 3 - "No Pain" - an episode that in fact did feature a lot of pain. Poor Claudia! Terence and I talk about the introduction of Raglan James. We're so excited about Justin Kirk's addition to this talented cast, but we absolutely do not trust RJ whatsoever. We also unpack the different iterations of Lestat featured in this episode via Louis and Armand. Y'all know we don't trust Armand and his recollection of Lestat in his flashbacks made us even more suspicious of him.Of course we talk about Claudia and the Coven. We've been on edge about Claudia's safety and well being in this new group but perhaps it is Claudia's age at the time she became a vampire that we should be worried about. We also talk about Claudia and Louis just outright hustling backwards during this episode. Coming up with lies for their "Bruce the Vampire Maker" backstory with doors and windows open is a terrible idea. And Louis needs to tell Claudia that Armand knows about Lestat ASAP!Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time! Our exit today has us traveling the final frontier of space and vaguely feel like we are part of a certain sci-fi series. This week, in our season finale (!), we are talking about Galaxy Quest, starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and podcast-favorite Alan Rickman. Along the way, we talk science fiction tropes, alternate casting, the young actors who show up in the film (Rainn Wilson! Justin Kirk! Sam Rockwell!), Black Mirror, 60s science fiction, Andrew Sarris, 1999 Oscar bait, and a preview of how we are wrapping up 1999 in the next few weeks. Theme music by Jonworthymusic. Welcome To The Party Pal: The Mind-Bending Film & Television Podcast You Didn't Know You Needed!
This episode of Welcome To The Party Pal celebrates the second season of HBO Max's Perry Mason, a compelling series which portrays the origin story of the famed criminal defense lawyer (played by Matthew Rhys). The series was created by Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald for HBO and it is based on the character of the same name by Erle Stanley Gardner. The series also stars Juliet Rylance as Della Street, Chris Chalk as Paul Drake, Justin Kirk as Hamilton Burger, and Shea Whigham as Pete Strickland. Season Two finds Perry in the throes of the Los Angeles legal system during the height of the Great Depression. Months after the Dodson trial that comprised the captivating first season shook the city, Perry is readjusting to life as a civil attorney when a high-profile murder case brings him back into the fold. In this episode hosts MIchael Shields and River Jordan expound upon how the story told in HBO's Perry Mason is the unflinching story of America's soul. They explore the knotty, fascinating case at the center of the second season while contemplating what might come next for the series. Ultimately, they celebrate what is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable seasons of television to be released in 2023. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

After the break, they discuss Shiv's plethora of strategic miscalculations, debate if Kendall will ultimately be wearing the crown at the end, and dissect the Episode 9 preview (17:32). This interview contains spoilers for the play and film. Isaac Butler and Dan Kois, authors of “The World Only Spins Forward: The Ascent of Angels in America,” in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. The book is an oral history of the play by Tony Kushner, looking at not only its history, but how Angels in America fits into the fabric of the American saga and theatrical history. The play Angels in America has become a stage classic since it was first produced in the early 1990s. Dealing with the confluence of the AIDS epidemic, the Reagan era, the disintegration of the Soviet Union, and the rise of gay liberation, the seven-hour epic theater piece also became a 2003 film directed by Mike Nichols and starring Meryl Streep, Mary Louise Parker, Justin Kirk, Jeffrey Wright, Emma Thompson and Al Pacino as Roy Cohn, available now on CD and via HBO. At present, major productions of Angels in America are mounted in both New York and Berkeley. The New York production, which runs through June 15, 2018, stars Nathan Lane and Andrew Garfield, and is up for eleven Tony Awards. The Berkeley Rep production, starring Stephen Spinella and Randy Harrison, runs through July 22, 2018. The evening after this interview, Dan Kois and Isaac Butler were on stage at Berkeley Rep with Stephen Spinella, who plays Roy Cohn in that production. It turns out that it was Spinella himself who wanted to restore the scene, and Tony Kushner gave the go-ahead, saying that it was fine to stick it in during or after the bows at the end of the play, like the teasers at the end of superhero films. At some point, though, director Tony Taccone chose to move the scene before the epilogue because the stage would be too crazy at the bows to suddenly do another scene with effects. Thus it became part of the play. Two other changes new to this Berkeley Rep production, mentioned by direcctor Tony Taccone: a revelation is made by the character Harper to her husband Joe in their final scene together, and a speech by Prior Walter during the heaven sequence. The post The Ascent of “Angels in America”: Isaac Butler & Dan Kois appeared first on KPFA.
This week we talk the NBA mostly. I give my thoughts on the week of playoff basketball and Justin Kirk debuts his new segment “High Tide, with Alpha Bama”. Give it a listen!
Originally aired November 12, 2013 Aaron (barely) survives a flight on Spirit Airlines, Janie (insanely) reveals she doesn’t ever get a flu shot, and the duo pop a cork on some good champagne and welcome TV’s Justin Kirk back to the kitchen table. Plus, what’s more disturbing? Elective cosmetic surgeries or the random image of Idris Elba riding a beach flyer bicycle? And is Janie the expert on “Power Napping” or is she just “Going Back To Bed”? Gotta question for Janie and Aaron? Originally aired March 19, 2013 Janie falls on her face, literally, while performing in a live storyteller's show, Aaron invites you to help him name his upcoming book of pizza recipes, and the duo share their techniques for how to handle rejection in the business. Plus, special guest Justin Kirk (Weeds, Animal Practice) swings by the kitchen to get seriously judgmental! Also, what's more irresistible in this world: Chipotle or Ed Harris? Welcome Renegade Nation it’s me Naughty Nicole and it’s time for another Renegade Review. Today, we’re going to review a guilty pleasure of mine, so I’ll fess up right from the beginning; I’m totes biased on this one. If you’ve read my book Sexual Confessional, then you already know that I have a very unhealthy and disturbing attraction to one Justin Kirk – yes, I’m fully aware that he has a strange, bird –like quality, but stop trying to understand it, just do like I do, accept it for what it is and move on. So you can imagine my glee when I found out that Mr. Kirk was going to be starring in his own new show on Fox. That’s right; my panties were all a quiver with the thought of seeing Weeds’ Uncle Andy in his glorious prime time slot. So this week, it’s all about Nicole and we’re checking out Fox’s APB. Cue the fan-girl squeeing… Now, fox has been using the slight boost of success they saw from last year’s X-Files reboot and the mid-season hit Lucifer to hope that lighting might strike them twice. They’ve launched APB off the back of the incoming reboot of the very successful 24, and if patterns hold true, this should launch APB as strong as Lucifer. But that’s only if 24: Legacy performs as well as the X-files did. So the problem as I see it is this, Fox has spent the better part of the 2000’s trying desperately to create the next great high-conceptual procedural. Typically these shows fall short due to an over-reliance on premise over character. You know, a future world where robots are cops as much as humans, or a man brought back to life after being killed in his senior years – who can forget Almost Human and Second Chance. Both huge flops for fox: But what makes the network’s latest attempt with APB different is the nature of the shows construction .This time, the premise is merely a tool aiding an already successful formula we all know so well. The Law and Order Police procedural.
The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Justin Kirk of Fox TV's APB. Police work isn't rocket science. It's harder. Inspired by the New York Times Magazine article “Who Runs the Streets of New Orleans,” by David Amsden, APB is a new police drama with a high-tech twist from executive producer/director Len Wiseman (LUCIFER, SLEEPY HOLLOW) and executive producers and writers Matt Nix (“Burn Notice”) and Trey Callaway (“The Messengers”). Sky-high crime, officer-involved shootings, cover-ups and corruption: the over-extended and under-funded Chicago Police Department is spiraling out of control. Enter billionaire engineer GIDEON REEVES (Emmy Award and Golden Globe nominee Justin Kirk, “Tyrant,” “Weeds”). After his best friend is murdered in a botched attempted robbery, and the killer remains at large, Gideon demands justice. Putting up millions of dollars of his own money, he makes an unprecedented deal to take charge of the troubled 13th District – and reboot it as a technically innovative police force: better, faster and smarter than anything seen before. With Gideon himself having created the department's cutting-edge technology, this eccentric yet brilliant outsider challenges the city's police force to rethink everything about the way they fight crime. But the near-overnight transition to becoming the city's most advanced police district isn't easy. Gideon knows if he's going to change anything, he needs help, which he finds from DETECTIVE THERESA MURPHY (Natalie Martinez, “Kingdom,” “Under the Dome”), an ambitious, street-smart cop who is willing to give Gideon's technological changes a chance.
