In this episode of Queerly Beloved, I'm joined by the multi-faceted Shelby Clark, a visionary entrepreneur, investor, embodiment facilitator, and founder of The Jungle Gayborhood, an LGBTQ+ focused retreat located center in the beautiful jungles of Costa Rica. You may remember me talking about the Gayborhood in my episode Healing the Father wound where I share about my magical time there attending a conscious kink retreat. Now you get to hear about it from the founder and director himself. In this interview we get to hear the story of how Shelby went from being a tech entrepreneur and founder of the groundbreaking billion-dollar car-sharing company Turo, to founding a queer retreat center in the jungle. And all the twists and turns on the way. Shelby vulnerably shares how, as a queer kid, he struggled to fully accept himself and found refuge in overachievement. Together, we unpack this familiar queer narrative of overcompensating to mask internalized shame, and explore how so many queer people, link their identity to achievement and people-pleasing, often at the cost of their own authentic selves. We then learn about all the influences for the Gayborhood including Esalen, Burning Man and radical fairy sanctuaries and then We explore why dedicated queer spaces like The Jungle Gayborhood offer uniquely medicine and create environments where radical authenticity can flourish free from societal expectations or limitations.Together, we unpack the transformative potential of psychedelics for queer healing, and I share some personal stories about my journey with that then Shelby shares insights from groundbreaking research recently facilitated at the Gayborhood. In Step 9: Church, we see Jesus. After spending 40 days with his disciples following his resurrection, he ascends into heaven, promising to send the Holy Spirit. The disciples are given a mission - to make disciples from all nations and spread the kingdom message. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descends upon the disciples, empowering them to speak in different languages and spread the message to people from all over the world. We witness many thousands of people become believers, including Paul, a persecutor of the Church who becomes a dedicated follower of Jesus after encountering him on the road to Damascus. Finally, we meet John, banished to the island of Patmos, receiving visions of future events. Through John, we're offered a glimpse into the return of Jesus and the establishment of his kingdom.Suggested ReadingsMatthew 28:1-20Acts 2:1-47Acts 9:1-31Episode HighlightsJesus' final commission to His disciples before ascending to heavenThe dramatic events of Pentecost and the Holy Spirit's empowermentPeter's powerful sermon leading to 3,000 new believersPaul's extraordinary conversion on the Damascus roadJohn's exile to Patmos and his glimpse of future eventsSupport the showRead along with us in the Bible Brief App!  In this special solo episode, I'm diving into my recent reunion with Grandmother Ayahuasca after an 18-month pause since my last journey. This eleventh sit—symbolically aligning with 1/11 and the new moon on Día de los Muertos—came at just the right time, ushered in by signs and synchronicities, and guided by the first female leader of one of the first indigenous tribes to work with Ayahuasca. Sharing it here feels like honoring the sacred nature of my experience while also opening up space to process, integrate, and share any insights with you, my beloveds.  I was joined by five other queer men for this ceremony, and the experience itself was both familiar and beautifully new. I began with a hape ritual, which grounded and opened me to Ayahuasca in a way that shifted my usual pattern. This time, the experience was gentler—no need to leave the space, no overwhelming discomfort. Instead, I found myself sitting with ease, receiving downloads with clarity. The purging took new forms: yawns, deep breaths, and laughter, each release bringing its own wave of insight. Some of the major takeaways centered on inner authority, sovereignty, and trusting myself more fully. Ayahuasca reminded me to create spaciousness in my life—spaciousness to slow down, limit caffeine, tune in more intentionally to my intuition, and reconsider my relationship with things like social media and Netflix. In a paradoxical yet timely message, I was encouraged to both seize the present moment and move forward without unnecessary haste. A second serving brought a more intense wave, confronting me with images of skeletons and snakes, and a primal fear of losing loved ones. This phase saw a deeper, physical purge, followed by a release of laughter and movement—each stage bringing a sense of relief and connection. This gentle reunion with Grandmother Ayahuasca was a gift, reminding me to honor life's rhythms and embrace the power of presence. Join me as I unpack the lessons, magic, and moments of this sacred journey.Learn about upcoming retreats I'm hosting here- https://www.wil-fullyliving.com/eventsSupport the show

Currently I have a lot of energy around a retreat I'm planning this May (Awakened Hearts - May 2-5 in Marin County) and so with retreats on my mind and my heart I chose that as the topic for this month's solo podcast. In this episode I share about me experience as the Executive Director of Easton Mountain (a LGBTQ retreat center in upstate NY) and what I learned and gained from that experience. Particularly I share about what I overserved and learned about retreats from living at and running a retreat center for those years. I also share about what I've experienced as a retreat producer, host, and facilitator- as well as my experience as a participant of many retreats. I share what I find valuable about them and what makes them a powerful and effective medicine. I also share about what I have come to observe are some of the effective best practices for creating safe, effective, transformational retreats.  I offer some tips to folks who may be considering planning a retreat, and also offer ways you can have a retreat like experience without signing up for a retreat (i.e. like some do it yourself guidelines).  Get more info on the Awakened Hearts retreat, May 2nd - 5th in Marin County, CA - https://www.wil-fullyliving.com/eventsSupport the show

David Monticalvo began to celebrate his gayness in his mid-30s, after experiencing an unplanned period of transition. During this process of beautiful challenge, David discovered the teachings of New Thought, which empowered him to view his journey as divine and perfect. Currently he leads the Gay Men's Spirituality Group based out of Unity Church San Francisco. He earned a master's degree in public health from the University of Florida and has a bachelor's in social work. As a teacher on gay men's wellness, he has spoken on rejection, creativity, and substance use disorders. His first book will be finished this year. This interview starts with David sharing (perhaps the most!) well thought out drag avatar that embodies who he is at this moment. We then talk about his experience coming out later in life and the energy that has resulted as he embraces being totally gay and totally spiritual- a combination he used to not believe was possible. In fact, originally for David, choosing Christianity was his attempt to hide his queerness. This eventually lead to his experience of Miso theism (which is hating, or resenting God). And what a journey has taken to come to loving God and loving his queerness. I speak about my journey to being unabashedly spiritual and my growth edge with prayer, admitting that sometimes I feel a bit in being shy about praying. And this leads to us chatting about how following our intuitive hits enables our true gifts to be revealed. Next, we chat about Spiritual hobbies- distinct from spiritual practices. And we talk about connecting with spirit through creativity (and connecting with creativity through spirit). We also touch on how Play is a magic sauce to create heart centered connectivity. We end envisioning a world where gay folks embrace their true spiritual selves, and they heal world. Gord, who join us from the UK, is a dynamic and insightful individual who brings a unique perspective to spirituality and personal growth. As a non-binary, autistic tarot reader and meditation guide, Gord has a wealth of life experience and a deep understanding of what it means to be on a spiritual journey. With a sense of humor and an open heart, Gord helps people navigate life's changes and unlock their inner potential through tarot readings, guided meditations, and journaling. In the interview we chat about them getting deeper and deeper involved with different organized religions, including the notoriously homo hating Baptist church, all the way to almost becoming a priest, and then eventually discovering a different way. Today's true crime episode focuses on Derek William Bentley who was born on the 30th of June 1933 in London, England, and was the youngest of six children. From the age of 19, he was unable to work due to epilepsy. In the 1950s, he was charged with murder after a failed burglary attempt resulted in the death of a police officer. Despite evidence to the contrary, he was sentenced to death. This case raised questions and debates on the use of capital punishment, hence his sentence was changed to life imprisonment following which he passed on in prison from “natural causes” which in fact meant death by hanging but was only described as “natural” because such death was natural based on the gravity of the alleged crime. Derek's case continues to be studied and serves as a reminder of the importance of a fair and just criminal system. The events of 2nd November 1952 led to his incarceration; Derek was in fact involved in a burglary attempt at a warehouse in South London where a police officer was shot and killed by Derek's accomplice, Christopher Craig. Bentley did not have a weapon or fire the shot but was arrested and charged with murder. His trial lasted just four days, after which he was found guilty and sentenced to death. Irrespective of a petition for clemency signed by over 100,000 people as well as the lack of evidence that Bentley fired the shot, the authorities hanged Bentley in accordance with the sentence. Bentley's case is often cited as an example of the harshness of the British justice system at the time.In 1998, Bentley was granted a posthumous pardon by the Home Secretary who said that there was serious doubt about Bentley's guilt. Sarah believes that Bentley was autistic and as such, unable to speak for himself at a time when neurodiversity was poorly understood. Some autistic people are highly intelligent but are unable to speak. Had people understood this neurodiversity, Bentley may not have been killed. Because of cases like this, the death penalty has been abolished. It is important to take extra effort to listen to neurodiverse people who may not be able to communicate well. Resources Mentioned●      Connect with Sarah on Instagram: @divineenigma●      Find out about the upcoming neurodiversity week eventsSupport the showJoin, support, and access exclusive episodes now.Sarah is offering a six-week coaching program for neurodivergent and neurotypical professionals who want to improve their career prospects, business development and support with the PRINCE2 practitioner exam. As children of a loving God, we were created to live in relationship with Him. Yet often in our daily lives, we struggle with knowing who we are called to be. Why are we here? Where are we going? What is this all about? 1 John 3:1: "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!"How good to know His great love and how important to bring our children into a deeper knowledge and experience of God's blessing.  Join Rachel and Jacqueline as they reflect on the captivating children's book Will You Bless Me? and the powerful impact it had on their children and themselves. Listen as they share about creating a culture of blessing in their families and more deeply knowing the blessing of the Father for themselves.  Written by Neal Lozano and illustrated by Ben Hatke, Will You Bless Me?  is a book for all ages that helps parents speak blessing over their child's identity. The book teaches both parent and child to ask for and receive blessings from their Heavenly Father through the gentle stories of Anna and Jesus. The belief that who we are is determined by what we do is a lie from the enemy and the world--parent or child, we come down hard on ourselves if we fail to meet expectations placed on us. It is important that we are able to receive the words of encouragement that the Lord has for us and for who he made us to be. Whether for children to receive blessings from their parents or for adults to meditate on the Father's encouragement, Will You Bless Me?  illustrates the significance of speaking honor over our identities so that we may hold close the life God has for us and hold loosely that which does not define us.Be filled with love and hope!ON SALE till DECEMBER 2nd, find Will You Bless Me?, Can God See Me in the Dark?, and What Can I Give God?Enjoy the whole Will You Bless Me? trilogyUse this link or the coupon code "Christmastime" at checkout. Have you heard about the Five Keys of Unbound? If so, well you are going to love this episode about going deeper with the Keys. If not, you'll still in for a wonderful treat.  The Five Keys are simple responses to the good news that help us to cooperate with God's grace.  Each key helps us to access this grace and unlock the door to greater freedom. The first three keys, Repentance and Faith, Forgiveness, and Renunciation,  are about responding to the gospel.  Those keys are about turning to Jesus and expressing faith, and more deeply experiencing the power of His kingdom released into our hearts. Then the last two keys are Authority and The Father's Blessing. These are really about the ministry of the Holy Spirit. These keys work intimately together to both give expression to a person's heart as they cooperate with what God's doing, but also to proclaim the good news over a person's life. These keys are SO SIMPLE, yet SO DEEP.  Every time we minister to someone, we learn something new along the way!Join Matt and Jenn as they take us Deeper with the Keys and get into the layers of repentance, the less obvious need for forgiveness, and the power of revelation in renunciation. Listen as they dive into learning not only about blessing a person's identity, purpose, and destiny, but taking it further by blessing areas in their lives that have been discouraged, hidden, or cursed. Whether you are new to Unbound or have been leading ministry sessions for years, you will hear some profound insight and beautiful testimonies,  and you'll be inspired along the way.Renunciation ListA Ring on Our Finger podcast The Overview of the Five Keys talkLeadership Conference informationVisit our websiteFind upcoming eventsSupport the mission of Heart of the Father!Your donation directly supports and enables our evangelizing mission. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.Give online or call us at 610-952-3019 to change lives today!Find us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramExplore with us on TwitterRelease: September 2022Music by Christian Harper.Artwork by Rosemary Strohm at Command-S.

Join us today and you're going to hear a beautiful story of humility of heart, willingness to serve, and faithfulness to the call. Our guest today, Ben Akery,  reminds us of Samuel who heard the Lord's voice and responded, " Here I am, Lord; you called me?"Ben is on the pastoral staff at Crosstown Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Born in Missouri, Ben spent most of his young life in Southern California. He began his career as an engineer, which brought his wife and him to many different places.   They moved frequently, but they always found themselves ending up in churches where they could serve and support. Finally, in 2007, Ben and his late wife Candy were ordained into ministry at Crosstown Church in South Carolina. It was around this time that they discovered Unbound and have gone on to raise a great team and help many other teams get started. A few of Ben's sweet and powerful musings:"God doesn't want us to be tormented by anything-doubt, shame, fear, all those related spirits, all those things in the back of the (Unbound) book...But I realize...  that God sent Jesus Christ not only to save us from our sins,  but also to give us the abundant life that we always hear about.  The Holy Spirit convicted me that the peace that surpasses understanding, the one that can give us the joy of the Lord, is unlimited. So there's no problem you have that's greater than the peace that God can give you... it can't be restricted at all by your ability to understand it, because if you were able to understand, it'd probably blow your head off!I mean, it's just more than you can handle. So it's greater than we would ever need. It doesn't matter if we understand it or not. It's a peace that God gives us, not based on any of our own understanding."Come be encouraged and inspired by Ben and Jen today. What is spiritual authority? Authority is such an important part of our Christian life. Yet, many of us don't have a good or clear understanding of the authority that we carry as followers of Christ. So what is authority in the context of the Christian life? Why is it important for us to walk in it?John 1:12 says, "but to all who receive Him, who believe in His name, He gave the power to become children of God."  The word translated power there is literally translated authority. So, He's given us power and authority. Jesus has restored our identity as sons and daughters of God, and now we can use this power and authority to live in the freedom of who we are, the children of God.  But wait,  there's more!Authority is also given to us so that we can share in His mission- and two things about this mission.Jesus has come to reveal the Father and to advance the Kingdom of God. Remember the Prodigal Son story? His father saw him and ran to him. He ran to him and he hugged him and he kissed him and he put a robe on him, put sandals on him, and he put a ring on his finger.Join us today and get a deeper understanding of the "ring on your finger!"Learn about the Unbound Catholic Priest RetreatVisit our websiteSee more upcoming eventsSupport the mission of Heart of the Father!Your donation directly supports and enables our evangelizing mission. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.Give online or call us at 610-952-3019 to change lives today!Find us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramExplore with us on TwitterRelease: July 2022Music by Christian Harper.Artwork by Rosemary Strohm at Command-S.

Today, we have a treat for you. We share a great talk that Matt Lozano gave at our last in-person Leadership Conference called The Kingdom is a Family. The gospel is a message of family. The gospel is the good news that the Father is inviting all to become members of His family. The gospel is covenant love offered to strangers. The gospel turns slaves into sons and daughters. The gospel ends division, and it makes one people out of two.In Luke 7, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and His disciples, in a large crowd, went along with Him. As He approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out, but not just a dead person, the only son of his mother. The inheritance is dead. The legacy is gone. This is a widow. This is a widow who has lost her future. Her life is gone. And a large crowd from the town was with her, and the Lord saw her, and His heart went out to her. God is drawn to the orphan, the widow, and the alien. This is the response of the gospel. He went up and he touched the coffin. They were carrying him on. He touched it. He reached out and grabbed ahold of death, and the bearer stood still. Isn't that awesome. Stop. the funeral.; Jesus is here!He said to the man young man, "I say to you, get up."  The dead man sat up and began to talk,  and Jesus gave him back to his mother. The result of the kingdom's power is to bring dead men to life and give them back to their mothers.  A son is reborn. This is our model for ministry.Family is where we belong. We are called to touch the place of death and destruction with the power of Jesus. You won't want to miss this powerful episode. Know you are a part of this family! Fr. Charlie on on his call: "Believe it or not,  one of the ways the enemy kind of held me back for a bit  was through that shyness and just believing that I didn't have what it took to be a priest."Fr. Charlie on the blessing of Unbound ministry at his parish: " We tried to do a catechesis, even small face sharing groups previously, and it just seemed like we kind of run into some hurdles. And what we found is that there were different blocks, in lies of the enemy, that our parishioners had bought into, unconsciously.  So as we started to pray with people with the Unbound model, we found that people started to become more open in their relationship with Christ, but also in the ways that they started to step into true discipleship and serving. So it really helped to open up ways that people received the gospel in new ways. But I would say even more importantly, we're starting to spread and share the gospel in ways that they hadn't (before).Fr. Charlie on the Priest Retreat: "I think the blessing of that was that opportunity to let the guard down in a sense of...it's okay for me to receive and see my brother priests (receive) too.   It's like, wow, I can receive; I don't have to give in this moment.  I remember in my session with you, Matt, seeing the love that you have for me as a brother in Christ.  I think that too was something very,  very healing for me, because again, sometimes, the enemy has come at me like, okay, well,  when are you going to be able to receive, you've always got to give, you've always got to give...so just in that mere fact of being ministered to myself, I would say, was very healing.Join us today for this beautiful conversation that's not JUST for Catholics or for priests.Be inspired to get free to serve!Learn more about the Catholic Priest RetreatVisit our websiteSee more upcoming eventsSupport the mission of Heart of the Father!Your donation directly supports and enables our evangelizing mission. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.Give online or call us at 610-952-3019 to change lives today!Find us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramExplore with us on TwitterRelease: June 2022Music by Christian Harper.Artwork by Rosemary Strohm at Command-S.

Quite often at an Unbound conference, we're asked if Unbound Ministry can be used with children. Neal's first response is always that parents should receive so they really understand the Five Keys, but there's so much more to say to help parents minister to their children in this way. Meet Sandi Lebel, an impressive servant of God and powerful force in the church. Hear some incredible stories of how the Five Keys of Unbound have significantly impacted her, her family, and her ministry.  Among many things, Sandi is on the National Service Committee for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and in the Archdiocese of Miami and served as Program Director for Respect Life Pregnancy Help Centers. Later Sandi served there as an education coordinator, and she has spoken to thousands of teens in Catholic high schools on issues of life such as chastity and abortion.Sandy is zealous for God and always joyful and enthusiastic and ready to serve. And those early years, when we at Heart of the Father were developing our training materials, she helped us transcribe leaders' training talks and transcribed and translated the Unbound Freedom and Christ DVDs into Spanish. In this fun and enlightening conversation with Neal, you'll hear how it's just the most natural thing in the world to listen to your child and help them to respond to the truth of the gospel.“(At my first Unbound conference) I was blown away by how profound the self-awareness without the self-condemnation in such a short amount of time that the Holy Spirit was doing.”Shortly after, she had an opportunity to help her young son through a challenge. “So I just told him, okay, sometimes when things like this happen,  you have feelings that are stuck inside of you, but in Jesus' Name, we can kick them out. So then we started to renounce anger and sadness and guilt. Without me prompting him in any way, he started to just exhale and say, ‘Mommy, Mommy, they're leaving.'Truly out of the mouths of babes. He even said,  ‘I feel lighter.' I mean, this was unbelievable to me to have been at a conference for three days and have read an entire book, and here's an eight-year-old child instinctively knowing the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit.”What's most incredible is how even now, as a young adult, her son sees the fruit of Unbound in his life and encourages all families to learn and use it with a heart of compassion and a posture of humility. Come experience freedom and learn more about bringing greater freedom to your family, in a simple way, as you learn to listen to your child and help them to respond to the truth of the gospel. Yet, Jerome Ellis combines them beautifully in his work, like when he uses academic and theoretical language to parse out the relationship between blackness and music. In the second part of our interview with Ellis, we talk more about his album, The Clearing, and how he draws out the beauty of stuttering through various mediums – history to show the connection between music and blackness, and comparing waiting birds and trees to the unknowingness of stuttering.“If I were...if I were repeating the first syllable of a book title than they…then [people] would be less likely to hang up because they would hear like, and they might be like – Oh, he's stuttering right now – but, because [my] glottal block so often sounds silent…people don't know what's happening, and…it's been so painful for so many years, but I gradually I've been able [to see there is something important there] in the not knowing.”Other topics include:How Blackness and stuttering play next to each otherHistorical knot of blackness and music Mosaics of differenceVoluntary and involuntary stutteringHerons and stutteringHonoring the mystery and beauty of the stutterStuttering and the state of unknowing Tress and stutteringGlottal block stuttering vs. repeating syllables in TV and film“Stuttering is an occasion to be present in complex thought”Mentioned in the episode:“We do not live single-issue lives” - Audrey LordeHistorian Saidiya HartmanTrack 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 of The ClearingHistory of the word grallatorialThis American Life episode featuring Jerome“The Cloud of Unknowing”Jerome's forthcoming projectsUpcoming Live Performances:April 10, 2022: Rewire Festival in The Hague, NetherlandsMay 7, 2022: XJAZZ! People like this are often identified as having a "covert" stutter. Both Maya and guest Sarah Nelson identify as covert stutters. In this episode, they talk about passing as fluent, disclosing to their families and friends, and analogies that describe their experiences.
