It's Dolphin Awareness Month
It's two trips to the Stade Louis II on the bounce as John and Alex roll up for Monaco v Ferencváros in the Europa League. With them again is Young Trafford, youthful vim and energy clamouring for a decent game of football. Will this clash with Hungary's most successful club side deliver the goods? With Henry Wingo not on the wing and an impressive band of noisy fans, the away side took the sting out of Monaco from early in the match - and came away with a famous 1-0 victory. Sadly the game wasn't up to much but with Alex as quiz master John and Young Trafford went head-to-head in a Fact Off. Would age triumph over youth? Have a listen for a battle that was as good as anything on the pitch. Monaco 0, Ferencváros 1 (Young Trafford 3, John 8) was recorded at the Stade Louis II on Thursday, 15 September 2022 More info at FootyOnTheMed.com

We're back! This week, due to her... *ahem* ... busy schedule, Devyani forgets to choose a topic, but all is well, because ARDRA IS HERE TO SAVE THE DAY!!! (Well, I may be biased, because my name just so happens to be Ardra's name backwards. Guess who I am!) Yet, Devyani impresses her co-hosts with a "Last Minute Poem", one of our many non-existent sponsors. The topic of the game is not a topic after all, it's a game, aptly christened "Wikidiving" by Snigdha, where we delve into the depths of the internet. The games begin (5:24)! We encounter the "plage", another non-existent sponsor, and the crows, our new co-hosts and, you guessed it, yet another non-existent sponsor. In the Fact-Off (18:16), Snigdha (who claims to have a lovely relationship with farm animals, though others agree that this bond is merely theoretical), Uma (who makes Devyani jealous of a cow) and Ardra (who fails to get to the actual point of the fact until much later) , all coincidentally bring animal facts, though we fail to notice this link. We then remain unsuccessful to launch into the outro till very late (48:04) as Ardra keeps interrupting Devyani with non-existent sponsors (45:20), which also include: Jealous of a Cow. Huzzah! Here we are again. I'm half inclined to give up and accept that our episodes will always be long. But then I think of you, our listeners, and… I'm still inclined to give up. But never fear, we will keep trying our best to shut up on time. After a large-ish amount of philosophy sprang out of our taglines, our main topic of conversation was anything that comes out of a tube, which is a weird, broad and surprisingly controversial subject. Turns out, we are tubes, and so are doughnuts. Therefore, we are doughnuts. Obviously, the next logical step is to mix up and debate the etymology of doughnuts. They originally came from looking like nuts made of dough. Then people started cutting out the middle so it could bake all through. The oil cakes thing is related, but it's a long story. If you're interested, you can read up on it. After this, Snigdha regales us with stories of the brave but unhygienic doctors of old (we probably don't have to say this, but DO NOT imitate them, they knew less than your toddler relative). Then we play - drumroll, please - Tubology! You can qualify as a professional Tubologist simply by playing this game, though instead of a degree you'll have to carry a copy of this podcast at all times. After the game (where everybody and their cat gets a little too excited), we move on to the FACT OFF. You know the drill. This week's fact off was less about hard facts and more about unbelievable stories. The Phantom of Heilbronn, the mayor of Cormorand, and accidental almost-vivisepulture. Links- Snigdha's argument for why aluminium foil comes out of tubes. What do you think? The Tangents crew needed to get out and enjoy some summer sun, so this week we're reposting our classic 'Bees' episode! Tune in next week for a new episode! Do you ever just wonder, “are the bees doing okay?” They’re so important to our food industry and native ecosystems, and every couple of years it seems like something horribly bad is happening to them. So this week, we’re taking a look at the fascinating lives and deaths of bees! Can they recognize human faces or understand the concept of zero? Why are blister beetles mimicking sexy bee pheromones? And what do nightclubs and honeybee hives have in common? Follow us on Twitter @SciShowTangents, where we’ll tweet out topics for upcoming episodes and you can ask the science couch questions! Salt: the mineral so nice that much of early human civilization was based on its procurement! Now we put big chunks of it on tasty pretzels at the mall! If some ancient Greek person saw a big salty pretzel, I bet he'd be very excited and proud of us. Actually, they might have had pretzels back then, let me look. Nope doesn't look like they did, so I stand by my statement. Follow us on Twitter @SciShowTangents, where we’ll tweet out topics for upcoming episodes and you can ask the science couch questions! Humans have been digging deep holes for fun and profit since time began, and some animals have been doing it for way longer than that! Ducks! Basically a joke of an animal, if we're being perfectly honest. They make silly noises, they waddle around, they are extremely cute and goofy looking, and they love to swim around in big piles of money! And look, you might see the title and think 'a duck isn't science.' Well i've learned a thing or two from those eggheads on the science couch and I can definitely say that you are wrong! It turns out, everything is science! Seems like a cop out, but it's true. Anyway, we sincerely hope everyone out there is doing well and staying safe! Love you guys! Hey everyone, things are a little different now than they were a couple weeks ago when we recorded this one. COVID-19 is impacting us all, and we just want to say that we hope you and yours are well. Thank you for choosing to spend your time with us every week. We will keep trying to do our part to make you smile and teach you stuff along the way. We love you guys! Take care of yourselves. Space… it’s big, it’s confusing, and there isn’t any gravity! That’s why we have a dedicated team of people up in the International Space Station running all kinds of experiments to try and figure out just what the heck is even going on up there. You truly have no idea how much of us ordering Popeye’s I had to cut out of this. This was definitely our longest recording session ever and I was livid!
