Tu and Lei begin the discussion about the brutal price war that's currently going on in the China automotive sector including where the foreign automakers, SOEs (state owned enterprises) and startups all fit in and how they think it'll affect everyone long-term.They both also discuss the annual Two Sessions meeting that the Chinese govt has each year and try to read between the lines with what's being said and what's actually meant. The chat moves into a chat about February sales and Tu talks about how western OEMs don't put enough weight on how much the China market means to their success. Tu then moves onto a discussion about the importance of China Battery Inc to the foreign automakers, but not only in China but in their home markets because it's really the only game in town for reliable, competitively priced LFP battery cells. The pod ends with Tu providing a history lesson on the battery cell sector in China and how it built itself out.

The podcast starts with Tu and Lei having a long discussion about their takeaways from Tesla's Investor Day. For Tu it was all about the ambitious numbers that stood out. Lei thought it was notable that Tom Zhu came out to present. Lei then moves the conversation over to his attending Luminar Day and they both reflect on how important the China market is for Luminar if they're to hit on any of their lofty sales and install goals. The pod ends with Tu and Lei briefly touching on February sales as the sales numbers were beginning to trickle out and what's surprised them so far.

Show #413. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 12th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Welcome to a new Patreon of the podcast…PRODUCER DOUG VOWLES. And increasing his support is CHRIS BENSON. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Volkswagen plans 22 million electric vehicles in ten years The Volkswagen Group is forging ahead with the fundamental change of system in individual mobility and systematically aligning with electric drives. The Group is planning to launch almost 70 new electric models in the next ten years – instead of the 50 previously planned. As a result, the projected number of vehicles to be built on the Group’s electric platforms in the next decade will increase from 15 million to 22 million. Expanding e-mobility is an important building block on the road to a CO2-neutral balance. Volkswagen has signed off a comprehensive decarbonization program aimed at achieving a fully CO2-neutral balance in all areas from fleet to production to administration by 2050. Volkswagen is thus fully committed to the Paris climate targets. In order to support the electric offensive, LG Chem, SKI, CATL and Samsung were selected as strategic battery cell suppliers. In view of the constantly increasing demand, Volkswagen is also taking a close look at possible participation in battery cell manufacturing facilities in Europe. Looking further ahead, solid-state batteries also have great potential. The goal is to enable an industrial level of production with this technology together with our partner QuantumScape. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2019/03/VW_Group_JPK_19.html Porsche Next-Gen Batteries Set To Provide Huge Electric Range A quote for Porsche: "The next generation of batteries will come in 2020, and will bring an increase in the ampere hours of our battery cells from 37 to 47. This will permit us to achieve larger ranges, which we will gradually introduce into our products." A Steven Loveday article on InsideEVs.com today: "Porsche CEO Oliver Blume revealed in a recent interview that the company has next-gen batteries already set for next year. These new batteries will eventually make their way into Porsche’s upcoming plug-in electric vehicles. While Blume did say that the new battery cells will go into Porsche vehicles as soon as next year, the automaker is putting greater effort into getting its upcoming Taycan launched first. The automaker already has some 20,000 people interested in the vehicle. It announced not long ago that due to the high demand, it will increase production pursuits." According to Electrek, the CEO noted that the company may try to get customers into a temporary Panamera Plug-In Hybrid if they have to wait too long for their Taycan to arrive. He explained: "If there are waiting times, we might take the opportunity to gently introduce customers to the Taycan; so for example, we could make a Panamera plug-in hybrid temporarily available to customers before they receive a Taycan. But right now we’re awaiting the start of production before we talk about specific delivery times." https://insideevs.com/porsche-next-gen-batteries-huge-range/ Bentley Flying Spur PHEV Caught Recharging Its Battery News on the new Bentley Flying Spur: "the new generation will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain joining the familiar V8 and W12 versions of the luxobarge. The prototype was caught charging its battery pack, which will be a part of a PHEV system likely inherited from the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid." Says Adrian Padeanu for MOtor1.com: "It is believed the PHEV variant will also offer a pure electric mode, although the battery pack’s juice (14.1 kWh in the case of the Panamera) won’t last for more than 30 miles (48 kilometers). The version with the two fuel caps will be the most economical Flying Spur of the bunch taking into consideration Bentley doesn’t have plans to install a diesel engine underneath that long and imposing hood." https://www.motor1.com/news/308990/bentley-flying-spur-phev-spied/ Almost 75% Of Electric Car Sales In U.S. Were Teslas In February 2019 Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com as the estimated February U.S. sales figures: In February 2019, Tesla sold about 7,650 all-electric cars (InsideEVs’ estimation) in the U.S., which is 67% more than a year ago. As the overall plug-in market didn’t grow much last month, Tesla further increased its market share. Tesla results: Tesla Model 3 – 5,750 (12,250 YTD), Tesla Model X – 1,100 (2,050 YTD), Tesla Model S – 800 (1,675 YTD). Tesla holds a huge stake in plug-in car market – in February it was roughly 44% out of the total of 17,239! In the case of the all-electric car segment, Tesla’s share is 74% and it’s expected to exceed 80% again when volume deliveries of the Standard battery Model 3 version begin." https://insideevs.com/tesla-sales-high-february-2019-u-s/ PEUGEOT e-208: price and availability "According to the French auto magazine L’Argus the PEUGEOT e-208 will have a starting price of 31.000 euros. Moreover, PEUGEOT expects the all electric variant (e-208) to represent 15 % of the new PEUGEOT 208’s sales. Last year 230.049 PEUGEOT 208 were sold in Europe, 15 % would be 34.507 cars, therefore less than Renault ZOE." According to Pedro at PushEVs: "the PEUGEOT e-208 is undeniably an appealing electric car, however I think that the Renault ZOE 2.0 will be more successful. Not only the production capacity for it will be higher, but specs are also expected to be better. According to Automobile Propre the new ZOE 2.0 will have a 61 kWh battery, which will put it in Kia e-Soul and Hyundai Kona Electric’s territory. Moreover, the 22 kW on-board charger gives it an unrivaled practicality." He also says in the comments: "While DC fast chargers are rare and expensive, public 22 kW EVSEs and common and most are free to use. That’s why I think that the 22 kW on-board charger is great to save money. Charge for free and relatively fast at commercial areas while shopping or watch a movie." https://pushevs.com/2019/03/12/peugeot-e-208-price-and-availability/ Tesla Reportedly Talking With CATL For China Battery Order "There’s little doubt Tesla is going to explode in China, but there’s a lot the company needs to put in place. For starters, finishing construction of its Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai. But also, assuring there are battery suppliers in the area that intend to work with it." Reports Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "We always take these Automotive News announcements with a grain of salt. This is because Tesla CEO Elon Musk usually comes forth on Twitter saying these announcements aren’t true. Sad but true, but still, we must share what’s reported, and in this case it’s positive once again. As reported by Automotive News: CATL has been discussing the required specifications for the batteries with Tesla officials, the people said, asking not to be named because the talks are private. Still, there’s no guarantee that an agreement will be reached, according to the people. Tesla Inc. is in talks about ordering rechargeable batteries from top Chinese producer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. to power Model 3 cars the U.S. electric automaker plans to start assembling at its new factory near Shanghai, people familiar with the matter said." https://insideevs.com/tesla-talking-catl-china-battery-order/ Tesla acquires car-hauling trucks and trailers "A recent Form S-3 submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has revealed that Tesla is acquiring car carrier trucks and trailers from a California-based trucking company using over $13 million worth of Tesla shares." Says Simon at TEslarati: "Tesla’s acquisition of Central Valley Transport’s trucks will help the company optimize the delivery of its vehicles. The electric car maker’s efforts to improve its delivery processes was highlighted in the third quarter of 2018, at a time when Tesla was just getting the hang of producing the Model 3 at scale. Elon Musk noted then that Tesla has moved from “production hell” to “delivery logistics hell,” referencing the company’s struggles to get the vehicles it was producing to delivery centers where they can be picked up by their owners. To help the company address its logistics issues, Musk noted that it even started building its own car carriers to help move as many vehicles as possible." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-car-carrier-hauling-trucks-trailers/ Fisker teases $40,000 mass-volume EV to be revealed on March 18 Announcing our "close" to $40,000 pure electric vehicle with a teaser picture & some tech details on March 18th. #fisker #ElectricVehicle #batterytech #EVs #automotive #cars #affordableev pic.twitter.com/GuJYAQTA4C — Henrik Fisker (@henrikfisker) March 8, 2019 "Based on the teaser photo and Fisker's comments about the car, we're expecting a small crossover. To be built in the U.S. and expected to launch in 2021, this will be the company's volume model eventually aiming for several hundred thousand sales per year." Says Autoblog: "It will compete somewhere around the BMW X3 ICE category and Tesla Model Y EV segment. The only thing we know about its looks beyond the A-pillar and side mirror is Fisker's desire "to make it really futuristic-looking." At the same time, "it has to be very versatile because we obviously want to get into a certain high volume with the vehicle." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/12/fisker-mass-market-ev-solid-state-battery-crossover/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. The Graphic Novice Comic Book Podcast returns for another week. After announcing a new 60-minute format change proposal, we changed nothing, and to the surprise of noone, we didnt mangage to cut any time off the podcast. We spend the non-comic book portion of the show talking about past break-ups, sleeping habits, sneaking back home after a night of drinking and a plethora of other self-indulgent subject matter before moving on to our focus content, comic books. Comic news includes a cutting and insightful review of iZombie and the CW App. In our weekly review of the books we read from March 18, we discuss Batgirl #40, Batman Eternal #50, Alex + Ada #13, Chrononauts #1, Outcast #7, Red One #1, All-New Captain America #5, All-New X-Men #39, Amazing Spider-Man #16.1, Magneto #16 (Nickel's Book of the Week), Moon Knight #13, Silk #2, and Wolverines #11. We didnt leave enough time to discuss the February Sales totals, so we moved right to a quick look at the books coming out March 25, 2015, and say our weekly goodbyes.
