Big Global Energy Question - N100 2024 BerlinThis session provides a holistic overview of crucial trends and strategic realignments in global energy, emphasizing both a scientifically informed understanding and the practical aspect of crafting future policies. This stage debate addresses the critical trends shaping global energy futures, strategies, and policies with a focus on adapting to the demands of climate change and sustainable transitions. The session will serve as a prism for evaluating the effectiveness of decarbonization policies through the lens of environmental, economic, and social impacts while integrating perspectives from physics to explore foundational principles affecting energy systems. It will also highlight transformative innovations in energy technologies and how these can redefine the landscape of knowns and unknowns in energy futuresSpeakersFrederick Bordry, CTO of Gauss Fusion | Former Director of Technology, CERNLenka Kovačovská, LK Energy Consulting, Former Deputy Minister responsible for energy, CZMirek Topolánek, Former Prime Minister of the Czech Republic & President of the European CouncilTony Curzon Price, Economic regulation, strategy, energy, net zero, antitrust, tech regulation, former sr advisor to UK PMNext 100 SymposiumThe Next 100 Symposium, a conference by the Global Arena Research Institute, bringing together leaders and experts across various disciplines, has served as a platform for fostering open discussion on global challenges since its inception. The inaugural Next 100 Symposium in the fall of 2018 commemorated the centenary of the First World War's end. Inspired by a spirit of rebuilding trust and stability from the ruins of post-war Europe, we sought to shift from crisis-driven language, exploring how science, technology, and open, cross-disciplinary dialogue could transcend the darkening global horizons. The past six years did not offer much optimism in this regard. The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a global accelerator, exacerbating underlying social, economic, and political issues, while also introducing many new ones. True to the original ethos of the Next 100, we reject the notion of deepening disorder, mistrust, and polarization as the "new normal." The 2024 Berlin edition aims to identify realistic, actionable paths forward, particularly in the context of the upcoming European parliamentary elections and the upcoming European Commission.https://www.next100symposium.org/If you want better insights into challenges and decisions you or your business are facing, GARI's analytical services are of unmatched complexity and high accuracy - whether your questions are on the green energy transition, trade and supply chains, or political and security related - contact us for a free consultation and see how you can optimise your decision-making.www.globari.org@LinkedIn @GARInstitute) / Twitter

Western countries have seized hundreds of billions of dollars of Russian assets following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago. Since then, the question of what to do with those assets has loomed large over debates about Ukraine. Vladimir Milov is a Former Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation and now a Russian opposition politician. Milov makes a compelling case for the expropriation of these assets as a means to aid Ukraine's reconstruction efforts and explains the web of state-affiliated money hidden overseas. Vladimir Milov delves into the staggering amount of Russian capital funneled out of the country, shedding light on the possibility that a significant portion is controlled by entities with direct ties to the Russian state. He emphasizes the necessity of differentiating between clearly identified state-owned assets and the more obscured parastatal resources that play a role in the international economy. Milov also discusses the potential for substantial funds to be uncovered, which could dramatically aid in the reconstruction of Ukraine's war-damaged infrastructure and society. ❓What is it like becoming a Deputy Minister in a government that's never been in power before?❓What was the relationship really like between Malaysia's then Prime Minister & Deputy Prime Minister, Mahathir & Anuar?❓How does one pick a constituency and why even politics in the first place when you can make good money as a BCG consultant? If you haven't already guessed it, today's STIMY guest is Dr Ong Kian Ming aka imokman. He went from being a BCG consultant to a lecturer and policy analyst at UCSI University and director of the Malaysian Electoral Roll Analysis Project (MERAP). He then entered politics and eventually became the Deputy Minister, Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia in July 2018!If you don't know anything about Malaysian politics, here's a heads up: Kian Ming (legitimately) thought he would always be in the opposition. In this episode, Chuck and Danny interview Major General Yair Golan, former IDF Deputy Chief of Staff, Former Deputy Minister of the Economy and Member of Knesset. In a fascinating and wide-ranging interview, they cover a lot of ground, including how Israel's adversaries perceive its domestic turmoil and its effects this has on their various calculations, the dangers of a major eruption of violence on the West Bank, how Israel should be handling the Iranian nuclear issue and lessons that the IDF can learn from the war in Ukraine.Following the interview, Chuck and Danny continue their ongoing analysis of Israel's unprecedented legal-political crisis. Chuck argues that the new government has succeeded in causing severe harm to Israel in almost every area, in just two months in office. Mass demonstrations are taking place on a regular basis, there are signs of the IDF coming apart, starting with the reserves, , the economy is nose diving, violence – both by Palestinians and Israeli settlers – is on the rise in the West Bank, the relationship with the US is being undermined, Israel's international standing has been hit and its adversaries heartened. Danny agrees with many of Chuck's assessments, but continues to believe that a compromise will be worked out between the coalition and government that will avert a true moment of crisis. Both agree that the IDF should be left out of the political crisis.Join us as Chuck and Danny agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute.
