Tensions rise in South Africa's government of national unity as DA leader John Steenhuisen slams Ramaphosa over a travel spat involving Andrew Whitfield. ANC's Mbalula hits back, accusing the DA of blackmail, while Julius Malema eyes a DA exit as his party's path to power. Neil de Beer weighs in on the GNU chaos, and Jacob Zuma takes the ANC to court over his expulsion. Plus, Nvidia edges toward a record-breaking $4 trillion valuation.
The ANC has vowed to reflect on the political implications of the DA's decision to withdraw from the National Dialogue following the dismissal of former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Andrew Whitfield. The DA has also called on civil society organisations to reconsider their support for the dialogue. Last week President Cyril Ramaphosa fired Whitfield for undertaking a US trip without authorisation. But DA leader John Steenhuisen says Ramaphosa's action was unfair as he fails to act against errant ANC ministers. Jon Gericke spoke to Moeletsi Mbeki, a political analyst.
DA federal chair Helen Zille has issued a stern warning to the ANC, stating the DA will not accept unilateral governance within the Government of National Unity. This follows President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to dismiss Deputy Trade and Industry Minister, Andrew Whitfield. Zille says the DA will escalate its response each time the ANC acts independently in the GNU. While the DA remains committed to the GNU, it has withdrawn from the National Dialogue and is now considering a motion of no confidence against President Ramaphosa. For more Elvis Presslin spoke to Mrs. Zille
John Maytham speaks to Helen Zille, DA Federal council chair, about their decision to not back the national dialogue, and to vote against budget votes presented by ministers linked to corruption. The action was sparked by President Cyril Ramaphosa firing Andrew Whitfield, a DA MP and deputy minister of Trade, Industry and Competition.

John Maytham speaks to Andrew Whitfield following his dismissal as Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition by President Cyril Ramaphosa—a move that has plunged the Government of National Unity into crisis. The DA has issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding the President reverse the decision, claiming Whitfield is being punished for doing his job and fighting corruption. The official reason for his removal was a February trip to the U.S. allegedly taken without permission, but Whitfield maintains he followed all protocols and even apologised when no response was received. The DA has condemned the move as a “calculated political assault” and accused Ramaphosa of applying a double standard, citing ANC ministers who remain in Cabinet despite serious misconduct allegations. The 2024 edition of the Irish Tech Challenge South Africa reached an exciting climax today with seven dynamic South African startups showcasing their innovations at Dublin's Dogpatch Labs, Ireland's leading startup and innovation hub. The event marks the end of an intensive accelerator week in Dublin, which drew tech leaders, investors, and political heavyweights, including South Africa's Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, Ireland's Minister for State of International Development and Diaspora, Sean Fleming, and South Africa's Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Andrew Whitfield. The initiative, which kicked off in 2022, is a collaboration between the Embassy of Ireland in South Africa, the South African Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), and the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA). With Dogpatch Labs in Dublin and Johannesburg's Wits Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct as key implementation partners, the 2024 program attracted over 350 applicants from South Africa's tech scene, narrowing down to seven exceptional finalists for this year's showcase. As the startups took the stage, the air buzzed with innovation. From cutting-edge FinTech and blockchain solutions to impact-driven ideas tackling sustainability and health challenges, the finalists put forward bold visions for the future of South African tech. The showcase was not just a pitch - it was a window into the future. Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, Paul Mashatile, impressed by the calibre of talent on display, highlighted the importance of the initiative: "We are very proud of the rapid growth of the South African tech sector and our innovative startups. We are grateful to Ireland for welcoming some of our best and brightest as they develop and strengthen the links between our two tech systems. The unique insights gained in Dublin this week will continue to place South Africa as a player on the world's tech stage." Austin Gormley, Ambassador of Ireland to South Africa, has praised the initiative, stating: "We are pleased to once again welcome the finalists of this year's Irish Tech Challenge to Ireland as part of this dynamic program. This initiative not only provides a platform for South African startups to engage with Ireland's thriving tech ecosystem but also creates valuable opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and access to international markets." Michelle Geere, one of the finalists and the founder of Adbot, was elated by the experience: "I truly appreciate the opportunity to be in Ireland to showcase our home-grown South African innovation, and to gain feedback from both an Irish and global perspective. We now have plans to create a presence for our company in Ireland and the relationships we have developed over the week will go a long way in helping us to take these important steps." Dogpatch Labs' Entrepreneur in Residence, Hesus Inoma, ended with an optimistic outlook: "We are honoured to have hosted an incredible cohort of startups in Ireland this week. We are proud of the programme as it truly speaks to the strengths of Ireland and South Africa and all that the ecosystems have to offer to the thriving tech sector. We look forward to following the ripple effects that this initiative will ignite in the next few years and decades for both nations." See more stories here.

Can Probiotics Really Treat Lactational Mastitis? Lactational mastitis is an infection of one or more lobules of the mammary gland, occurring up to 33% of lactating mothers. Although the condition may happen at any point during the lactation period, between 75-95% of cases occur within the first 12 weeks, with the frequency particularly higher during the second and third weeks postpartum. New research shows that lactational mastitis is a dysbiotic process. Significant levels of beneficial microbes including Lactobacillus gasseri and L. salivarius are found in healthy breastfeeding mothers, whilst their presence is unidentifiable in the milk of those with lactational mastitis. In comparison, high levels of pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermis are found in acute and chronic episodes of the disease respectively. Both strains display multi-drug resistance to antibiotics, explaining why this condition is difficult to treat and can become recurrent or chronic. Due to their anti-infectious, antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties, much attention has been paid to the oral administration of L. fermentum, L. gasseri and L. salivarius. A blend of L. gasseri and L. salivarius was administered to women with lactational mastitis for four weeks. At day 14, those supplemented showed no clinical signs of mastitis, whereas the condition persisted in the control group throughout the study period. A second trial divided mastitis sufferers into three groups; receiving either L. salivarius, L. fermentum or antibiotics. Those in the probiotic groups had greater improvement, and lower recurrence of lactational mastitis when compared to those in the antibiotic group. Other lactobacilli species such as L. lactis and L. rhamnosus have also shown to significantly inhibit the growth of S. aureus. In this interview, Andrew Whitfield-Cook interviews Belinda Reynolds, a noted dietitian with a special interest in women's health, pregnancy and breastfeeding. By explaining this truly groundbreaking research, Belinda highlights the potential that probiotic therapy has for the prevention and treatment of infectious lactational mastitis.
