fWotD Episode 2936: Malcolm X Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 19 May 2025, is Malcolm X.Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little, later el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz; May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965) was an African American revolutionary, Muslim minister and human rights activist who was a prominent figure during the civil rights movement until his assassination in 1965. A spokesman for the Nation of Islam (NOI) until 1964 after which he left the movement, he was a vocal advocate for Black empowerment and the promotion of Islam within the African American community. A controversial figure accused of preaching violence, Malcolm X is also a widely celebrated figure within African American and Muslim communities for his pursuit of racial justice.Malcolm spent his adolescence living in a series of foster homes or with relatives after his father's death and his mother's hospitalization. He committed various crimes, being sentenced to eight to ten years in prison in 1946 for larceny and burglary. In prison, he joined the Nation of Islam, adopting the name Malcolm X to symbolize his unknown African ancestral surname while discarding "the white slavemaster name of 'Little'", and after his parole in 1952, he quickly became one of the organization's most influential leaders. He was the public face of the organization for 12 years, advocating Black empowerment and separation of Black and White Americans, and criticizing Martin Luther King Jr. and the mainstream civil rights movement for its emphasis on non-violence and racial integration. Malcolm X also expressed pride in some of the Nation's social welfare achievements, such as its free drug rehabilitation program. From the 1950s onward, Malcolm X was subjected to surveillance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).In the 1960s, Malcolm X began to grow disillusioned with the Nation of Islam, as well as with its leader, Elijah Muhammad. He subsequently embraced Sunni Islam and the civil rights movement after completing the Hajj to Mecca and became known as "el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz", which roughly translates to "The Pilgrim Malcolm the Patriarch". After a brief period of travel across Africa, he publicly renounced the Nation of Islam and founded the Islamic Muslim Mosque, Inc. (MMI) and the Pan-African Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU). Throughout 1964, his conflict with the Nation of Islam intensified, and he was repeatedly sent death threats. On February 21, 1965, he was assassinated in New York City. Three Nation members were charged with the murder and given indeterminate life sentences. In 2021, two of the convictions were vacated. Speculation about the assassination and whether it was conceived or aided by leading or additional members of the Nation, or with law enforcement agencies, has persisted for decades. He was posthumously honored with Malcolm X Day, on which he is commemorated in various cities across the United States. Hundreds of streets and schools in the U. S. have been renamed in his honor, while the Audubon Ballroom, the site of his assassination, was partly redeveloped in 2005 to accommodate the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center. A posthumous autobiography, on which he collaborated with Alex Haley, was published in 1965.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:55 UTC on Monday, 19 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Malcolm X on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Arthur.

In the 73rd episode of Perceived Value, host Sarah Rachel Brown is at the Penland School of Craft during their Winter Residency. This episode is part of a special series featuring the Distinguished Fellows of the Penland Winter Residency. As the Andrew Glasgow Resident, Sarah has been awarded two full weeks to conduct interviews and research at Penland during their winter program. Sarah was encouraged to share a portion of her work with Penland's artist community, thus this special series. The first Distinguished Fellow to be featured is Ada del Pilar Ortiz Berríos, a visual artist and educator based in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico. This past November, Sarah traveled to San Juan, PR, for the first time and, while there, visited the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico. At this museum, she came across Ada's work, not knowing that she would have the chance to interview her two months later. The two artists sat down to discuss Ada's life in Puerto Rico, the residencies Ada has completed, and what she is focusing on during her time at Penland. This special series is possible due to the support of the Penland School of Craft and the Andrew Glasgow Residency. Thank you to the Penland staff and participating artists for the generosity of your time and participation. MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST:Ada del Pilar Ortiz Berríos (b.1995 Barranquitas, Puerto Rico) is a visual artist and educator. Her artistic practice interacts with sculptural processes that explore issues within the architectural condition, the meaning of home, the remains of built space and their relationship with memory. Through her work she reflects on how these concepts shape us in the place we inhabit from its physicality and the one that resides in us from memory -both concrete and malleable- as part of our formation, establishing a link between the reality of a place and the imagined one. Ada del Pilar obtained her BFA with a concentration in Painting from the School of Fine Arts and Design of Puerto Rico in 2018. Her work has been presented individually and collectively in spaces such as the Arsenal de la Puntilla Museum, El Kilómetro Gallery, Embajada Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico and the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center in New York, among others. She has participated in residencies including Área: Programa de Residencias (2019), “La Práctica” interdisciplinary program at Beta Local (2019), The Studios at MASS MoCA, Puerto Rico Artist Fellowship (2023) and Penland School of Crafts Winter Residency (2024). Her work has been commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico under the "MAC en el Barrio" program. Ada's work has been supported by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and CATAPULT: "A Caribbean Arts Grant" programme. She currently lives and works in Bayamón, Puerto Rico as an artist in residency in "Proyecto Casitas Artistas Residentes" of this municipality. Tim Forbes scored a goal at his college lacrosse game and looked up to see who was cheering loudly--Tim will never forget spotting his friend, Santis, as well as a young, homeless man they had befriended, Thomas. Tim learned "radical empathy" through his encounters with Thomas. Tim was touched by Thomas' humanity and saw Christ residing in him--Thomas also ministered to Tim. Through this experience in his young adulthood, coupled with many years of ministry and a career in Catholic school administration, God has taught Tim to practice empathy with those he serves, as well as those he disagrees or struggles with. Tim senses God's call to hope and serve in all circumstances--he is now working at the Judge Dinkins Educational Center, which "provides juvenile vocational training in Davidson County for adolescents who might be at risk or engaged with the juvenile or criminal justice system. The Center's programs are supported by social and emotional learning and focused on sustainable, hands-on education for long-term employment." Learn more at jdecnash.org.

A White House tour is practically a must-do when visiting Washington, but the experience can leave some guests wondering about spaces they didn't get to see, like the Oval Office. The White House Historical Association hopes to provide answers to some of those questions when it opens The People's House: A White House Experience, in the fall of 2024. Situated on three floors of a building a block from the White House at Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street, the $30-million educational center will use cutting-edge technology to teach the public about the storied executive mansion and its history. “This will be a technology-rich, immersive experience where you will actually go into spaces and, due to the miracles of modern technology, those spaces will become White House rooms around you,” Stewart McLaurin, the association's president, told The Associated Press before the project was announced to the public. The center will feature a large cutaway model of the White House with rooms that, with the help of technology, can morph into the Green Room, the Blue Room, or the Red Room. A full-scale replica of the Oval Office will reflect the incumbent president's décor. A recreation of the Rose Garden will offer the experience of strolling through its blooms. Upstairs galleries will allow visitors to experience the Cabinet Room, the State Dining Room, and the movie theater. Another gallery will teach about the many unseen people — ushers, chefs, florists, butlers, housekeepers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters — who care for the White House and keep it functioning in its multiple roles as a home for the president and his family, an office for the president and his staff, a ceremonial stage and a museum. People will also learn about the slave labor that went into building the White House. “That's horrific. But we can't shy away from the ugliness of that history,” McLaurin said. “Those enslaved people are just as much part of White House history as any president or first lady, in my view. And that is another story that we're deeply involved in telling.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

In addition to being one of the most beautiful places on God's green earth, Salmon, Idaho (pop. 3,169) has the distinction of being the birthplace of arguably the third most celebrated member of the Corps of Discovery after the captains themselves: Sacajawea. It's therefore no surprise that Salmon is also the site of the Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural, and Educational Center -- a jewel in the crown of Salmon, as well as a gift to scholars, historians, and lovers of Lewis & Clark history. In this "Core of Discovery" podcast, I interview the Center's director, Suzy Avey, about her history with the Center, its mission, and how best to experience its narrative.

Let this be the mother's key to the whole of the education of each boy and each girl; not of her children; the Divine Spirit does not work with nouns of multitude, but with each single child. Because He is infinite, the whole world is not too great a school for this indefatigable Teacher, and because He is infinite, He is able to give the whole of his infinite attention for the whole time to each one of his multitudinous pupils. In this conversation I have on Algernon Lutwak, medical researcher at the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine (views are his own), to discuss the use of electronic shock on children as a behavioral modification tool in a Massachusetts school. What began as a conversation over a horrific practice evolved into a larger discussion on the treatment of people with disabilities in our society. In this episode of Doc Talks, Doc Brian sits down with Meggan Hill-McQueeney. Meggan is the current President and COO of BraveHearts Therapeutic Riding and Educational Center. In August 1993, while waiting to be discharged from the hospital after what she thought was a routine surgery, Marge Tautkus Gunnar learned that she had ovarian cancer. The ensuing months of chemotherapy were long, difficult, and completely life altering. During the course of her treatment, Marge not only derived courage and strength from the love and devotion of family and friends, but also from the deep and soulful connection she had to her Lipizzan stallion, Neapolitano IV Farica (Max). “One day when feeling particularly depressed, my sister bundled me into the car and we headed to the barn. When I entered Max's stall, he looked at me with large soft eyes that seemed to question ‘Where have you been?' I threw my arms around his neck, buried my face in his mane and sobbed. Max wrapped his neck around me and squeezed. I felt that connection between us was so powerful, I knew that Max was one of the reasons I had to get well. Although I didn't know it at the time, it was then that the seed for BraveHearts was sown.” Listen to this episode to hear how BraveHearts uses horses to help Vets learn PTSD coping skills inadvertently while training horses. This episode is a little different from the previous ones in that I'm talking with an acupuncturist rather than a Veterinarian. Eric Grey is a good friend who is an experienced Classical Chinese Medicine practitioner. In addition to the things we talk about on the podcast, Eric has lectured to veterinarians both at the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association Conference as well as the Midwest Veterinary Conference. When I started practicing holistic veterinary medicine and learning different modalities, I saw that the culture was for practitioners to learn a multitude of modalities to have a full range of things to offer a patient. At least in my case, it sometimes seems like a juggling act to balance keeping current in multiple modalities so that I can offer my patients the best care possible. Eric's recent decision to limit his practice was intriguing to me, so I was able to arrange for us to talk about that decision in the context of his professional life to date. Eric Grey, MSOM is an Acupuncturist in Astoria, Oregon. He has a BS in both Biology and Philosophy from Oregon State University. He got his MSOM from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon in 2009. He and his wife and business partner Amanda Barp founded the Watershed Wellness Clinic in the Ladd's Addition neighborhood of Portland, Oregon in 2009. Eric also served as Adjunct Faculty at NUNM. He continued his studies including an herbal discipleship and clinical training with Heiner Fruehof, PhD and is a Diplomat of Canonical Chinese Medicine from the Institute of Classics in East Asian Medicine. While still a student at NUNM, Eric founded the website Deepest Health, which started as a blog about his experiences as a Classical Chinese Medicine student, but now has evolved into not only a blog about his experiences as a practice owner, but also an Educational Center offering short online courses in topics related to Classical Chinese Medicine and the business of acupuncture. After building Watershed Wellness to include multiple practitioners, Eric and Amanda decided to relocate to Astoria, Oregon in 2016. They started Watershed Wellness Astoria while continuing to commute to Portland part-time to practice. In 2018 they closed the doors in Portland and have devoted their energy to Astoria full-time. Join me for this conversation with Eric as we talk about founding two clinics, running an online business, and the thought process behind his most recent decision to stop practicing acupuncture in order to limit his practice to herbal medicine. In the following episode of The Immeasurable Podcast, we interview Rupert Spira.Rupert Spira is a well known author and public speaker in the non-dual contemplative tradition. He has written many books including Being Aware of Being Aware, The Nature of Consciousness and The Ashes of Love. For more on Rupert's work click here.In this episode, Jaap Sluijter and Henry Fischer explore Rupert's work and how it directly relates to the teachings of J. Krishnamurti:Introduction by Henry Fischer :25Rupert Spira on his early experience with J. Krishnamurti 1:05Jaap Sluijter talks about Rupert's podcast with Sam Harris and a focus on semantics and perennial questions 2:25Jaap asks about emotionality in the sense of "wanting to find comfort in a true self" 4:41Rupert talks about the search for happiness not being a trap but instead a clue to who we really are 7:10Jaap responds and says Krishnamurti says that, 'as long as there is still conflict the "other" doesn't come into being' 8:52Rupert says, "that which truly IS never comes into being" 10:29Jaap asks, "how do you approach that?" and "wouldn't the mind have to be free to come in contact with this?" 11:35Rupert gives an analogy of John Smith and King Lear to illustrate what he is saying 12:00Jaap asks about self-recognition or remembering oneself and how it is different from "remembering" where you put your shoes 16:40Rupert explains that this remembering is vertical (going within) and not along the horizontal plane of memory 17:15Jaap goes back to emotionality and wonders if there is this desire for one's "true self" which may be a kind of illusion and not an actual reality 18:28Rupert says there is something more beautiful prior to all the seeking and that who we are is prior to any kind of seeking 19:38Jaap asks, "does truth come into being via positiva or via negativa?" 21:00Rupert says all that is required is the removal of ignoring what we truly are and Rupert says this is what Krishnamurti meant when he said, "the removal of fear" 21:48Jaap again asks if this comes from removing the false or if it is instead important to try to see what is true 22:27Rupert says they are two different ways of looking at the same thing 23:22Jaap asks "how do we know it is true" 25:52Rupert says "all illusions have a reality to them" 27:00Jaap says Krishnamurti says "it's only when you don't seek a way out you see the suffering fully" 31:51Rupert agrees and asks if we were instead to turn and face the suffering, what would the experience of accepting suffering feel like? 32:27Henry points out the difficulty with turning toward something without motive 33:14Rupert asks us to do the experiment of turning toward suffering with no escape and says the common word for it is "happiness" 33:28Henry brings the King Lear analogy back up and asks if in this recognition of our true nature is mediated by the senses at all 35:55Rupert says his use of the word "knowing" has nothing to do with conceptual knowledge but instead he uses interchangeably with awareness 37:35Jaap doubts this sense "I am" because he says it has continuity 41:36Rupert responds and asks what is the reality of the illusion of continuity in your experience? 42:21Jaap asks if the "desire to be" might bring about this continuity 43:13This is the limit on notes permitted for this episode. Dr. Linda Lancaster, has developed a medical modality that is based on fundamental spiritual truths, presented in her new book, Harmonic Healing: Restore Your Vital Force for Lifelong Wellness. Her program addresses the toxic pollution that we're subjected to around the clock, and offer clear and doable practices for cleansing your system of the chemicals, heavy metals, radiation and parasites that weaken your defenses, slow you down, and open you to disease. Linda then goes further, integrating a rare spiritual insight with lab based western medicine techniques, and she's come up some fascinating innovations that point towards the medicine of the future. This is a powerful, thought provoking conversation about the territory where Western medicine and Eastern metaphysics converge. Dr. Linda Lancaster is a Board Certified Naturopathic Physician and Homeopath. She has been in practice since 1981 and founded Light Harmonics Institute, an Energy Medicine Clinic and Educational Center based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her training includes Classical Homeopathy, Radionics, Medical Radiesthesia, Subtle Energy Healing, Nutrition, Herbal Medicine, Ayurveda and Detoxification Methods. She has treated more than 10,000 patients in over 30 years of practice. Dr. Lancaster was Yogi Bhajan's personal physician and remained by his side until his passing.
