5. THE LAST / FINAL STEP OF THE LJ APPROACHA. Put the T/O foot down FLAT on to the T/O board. Not on your toe: not with the heel first....FLAT !!!B. Maintain a PERPENDICULAR POSTURE throughout this part of the jump.C. DO NOT have a full cycle of the T/O leg ( last step ) as you place it on the board. Simply scoot the leg through and put the foot down.D. The T/O STEP is the SHORTEST STEP / STRIDE in the LJ Approach.6. THE TAKE OFFA. The upper body must remain a PERPENDICULAR posture to and through the entire T/O process.B. There must be a checking or delaying of the onset of rotation with the arm opposite the T/O leg at the moment the athlete leaves the board.C. The Leading Leg must come through with the heel tight to the butt to create a SHORT, FAST MOVING LEVER at this T/O moment.D. Instruct the athlete to RUN THROUGH the T/O Board....NOT TO the T/O Board. This will assist in maintaining speed until the last possible moment.7. AIR MECHANICS AND LANDINGA. The HANG, HITCH KICK or HITCH HANG are all efficient techniques to be used. No one technique is better than the other. The purpose each of these techniques serves is to help delay the premature onset of rotation so the athlete can establish a good extension at landing.B. Maintain a PERPENDICULAR posture as long as possible as you leave the T/O board. C. Instruct the athlete to delay the extension of the legs until the last possible instant of deceleration.***Welcome to Gill1918, the track & field coaching podcast powered by Gill Athletics. 3. THE RUNWAYA. The entire length of the approach must go from SLOW to FAST. The fastest part occuring at the moment of Take Off ( T/O ).B. The RHYTHM of the approach should be smooth, consistent and maintained throughout the entire approach.C. COUNTING ( out loud or to yourself ) can greatly assist in developing the above stated RHYTHM.D. While correct Sprint Mechanics must strive for perfection during the approach, an ' elastic loading ' ( or SPLITS ) must occur on each successive stride. In effect, this is an increase of the actual stride length of the athlete, all the while maintaining excellent sprint technique.4. THE PENULTIMATE STEPA. The athlete must remain PERPENDICULAR throughout the approach...This means the UPPER BODY is sitting / postured directly over the LOWER BODY. There can be NO leaning backwards or forwards in any part of the approach and take off.B. The PENULTIMATE STEP ( second last step of the approach ) is always the LONGEST STEP / STRIDE in any jumping approach. ( LJ, HJ, PV, TJ ). However, speed can NOT be compromised here. Maintaining a PERPENDICULAR POSTURE will help in keeping the speed in tact during the penultimate step.C. The athlete must LEAD WITH THE HEEL OF THE PENULTIMATE FOOT as he / she is going into the Penultimate Step. BUT...the athlete MUST put the foot down FLAT as it strikes the ground.***Welcome to Gill1918, the track & field coaching podcast powered by Gill Athletics. Perpendicular Futures: A Footlights CollegeIn this imaginative and thought-provoking episode, futurist and historian Dr. David Staley reads his latest blog article, “Perpendicular Futures: A Footlights College.” Known for his boundary-pushing scenarios for the future of higher education, Staley offers a bold and unexpected vision: What if colleges used performance arts—like theater and show choir—as a strategic enrollment tool, much like intercollegiate athletics?Drawing inspiration from high school show choir fervor and the storied Cambridge Footlights comedy troupe, Staley explores the idea of colleges investing heavily in performance opportunities not as academic programs, but as extracurricular recruitment strategies. This “perpendicular future” veers sharply from the typical trend lines of higher education planning and invites us to rethink what attracts students to campus in the first place.Whether you're a campus leader, a strategist, or simply someone intrigued by the unconventional, this episode will stretch your imagination about what's possible—and perhaps even probable—for the future of enrollment management.Perpendicular Change: What it means and why it matters for institutional planning.Theater and Show Choir as Enrollment Strategy: A new role for extracurriculars. The Passion Economy in Education: Students paying to perform—not for professional outcomes but for personal fulfillment.Footlights Reimagined: A nod to Cambridge's legendary troupe and a blueprint for creative placemaking.NIL Deals for Performers?: Imagining a future where artists, like athletes, earn incentives for their involvement.Disruption vs. Continuity: Why the future of college enrollment may not follow the path we expect. How embracing passion-driven participation could unlock new enrollment pathways. Why seemingly “fringe” extracurriculars might hold the key to student engagement and retention.A compelling case for reimagining institutional investments—from sports fields to stages.Dr. David Staley is a historian, futurist, and professor at The Ohio State University. He is widely known for his visionary writings and talks that challenge higher education to think differently about its future. In addition to his university teaching and consulting work, Dr. Staley regularly publishes articles on university design and innovation.

Nestled within a Spanish forest, the sounds of music mingle with nature. For a few days every year, new friends and old gather together to enjoy what we all love dearly. With the utmost of care the lineup is curated for a continuous stream of wonderful artists to ply their craft. Known as Perpendicular, the intimate festival brings forth incredible sets that range from ambient and experimental through to deep techno and beyond. With the scene set in mind, we arrive at our premiere for today. Valencian artist, David Ortolà aka d_o_ppelgaenger and Szene 9. The release as a whole encapsulates his live set at the past edition of Perpendicular, which makes it all the more special and a window into what the festival provides. Szene 9 begins with swirling drone-like tones and textures followed by off-kilter percussion that evolves over the duration of the track. In addition to the overall pensive atmosphere are melancholic pads that provide just a touch of gravitas. Like a grand crescendo the elements peel away one by one leaving only the synths to gnaw away at the night. Szene 9 and the remainder of d_o_ppelgaenger's amazing ‘Live at Perpendicular 2024' release will be the first on the brand new label, Sediments on November 3rd. Run by both David, and Jaime Romero aka Estrato Aurora the Valencian label will be closely watched and (listened to) by us here at Delayed. With today's mix, we close the chapter on this year's collaboration with Perpendicular Festival, where we teamed up to present some of the most inspiring and forward-thinking sets from artists like Eight Fold Way, 037, Javier Marimon, Sciama, and o.utlier. For the grand finale, we've saved something truly special: a live set from Valencia-based duo Pajaro Dune, composed of Jaime Romero (aka Estrato Aurora) and composer/pianist David Ortolà (aka d_o_ppelgaenger). If you've followed Delayed, you're likely already familiar with these two. Their partnership spans over two decades; in that time, they've refined a distinct musical dialogue. This particular set, performed on a Sunday around noon, struck the perfect tone for what followed. The interplay between broken, raw, and distorted 606 grooves, oscillating effortlessly from halftime to low-slung tempos around 100 BPM, paired with atmospheric synths, created a hypnotic and propulsive mood. Romero and Ortolà have found a rare balance, where their sound feels both unbound and deeply rooted, ideal for those transitional, warm-up moments that shift a gathering into flow. This music makes you move like seaweed swaying beneath the surface in the dysphotic zone, where fleeting shafts of sunlight pierce the dark. Let this mix linger with you until the next edition of the Perpendicular Festival. Some artists manage to carve out a space in your mind with a style so distinct you find yourself constantly returning for more. Over the past year and a half, one name has been on steady rotation here at Delayed: Sciama. Whether it's his original productions or hypnotic mixes, the London-based producer has consistently delivered. His work has earned a home on ASC's outstanding Auxiliary label and, more recently, on Forest Drive West's OODA imprint. Today's feature is a special treat, a thrilling journey through Sciama's set from this year's Perpendicular festival. Our ongoing collaboration continues to shine a spotlight on the freshest talent and cutting-edge mixes, and this is no exception. This is Sciama at his most exhilarating: a 130-minute thrill ride recorded late at night deep in a Spanish forest. Packed with polyrhythmic wizardry that straddles the line between halftime and techno, it's a rollercoaster of tension and explosive release points carried by a relentless groove, impossible to resist. This is a set to get lost in, move to, and feel visceral. It's crème de la crème DJing from one of our favorites. In the past few months, we've found ourselves returning to a remarkable corner of the Spanish midlands, where music thrives in a unique and unpredictable way. Perpendicular Festival has become the place where artists embrace spontaneity, crafting moments that feel truly alive. This time, we're focusing on o.utlier, an Irishman based in London whose debut album Alaya on Appian Sounds left an unforgettable mark last year. A co-founder of Titrate Records and a resident DJ for Astral Industries, o.utlier has mastered the art of balancing a diverse range of sounds, from drone to intricate polyrhythmic techno. If you're familiar with his work, you already have a sense of the musical journey he can take you on. It was a bright Saturday afternoon when he took the stage, easing the crowd into the day with laid-back broken beats and serene atmospheres. There was an unspoken magic as the music slowly drew everyone in, almost imperceptibly. Beneath a canopy of shade, the crowd swayed, their movements guided by his subtle changes in tempo and tone. Before long, the energy began to build, smooth, natural, and unforced, until the atmosphere shifted into something more adventurous. Suddenly, the set took a turn, diving into murkier territory. Darker tones emerged, with dub influences and intricate rhythms that seemed to challenge both body and mind. Over the course of nearly two and a half hours, o.utlier created a magnetic experience that felt both cerebral and visceral—a true journey through the unexpected. This performance was a special one; it was a shared moment at a gathering of kindred spirits. Do you really need another reason to hit play? We think not. https://soundcloud.com/o-utlier https://soundcloud.com/espacio-perpendicular https://www.instagram.com/outlier_rory/ https://www.instagram.com/espacio.perpendicular/ https://outlier.bandcamp.com/album/alaya Follow us on social media: https://soundcloud.com/itsdelayed https://linktr.ee/delayed https://www.itsdelayed.com https://www.facebook.com/itsdelayed https://www.instagram.com/_____delayed https://www.youtube.com/@_____delayed

Seen from an airplane, much of the United States appears to be a gridded land of startling uniformity. Perpendicular streets and rectangular fields, all precisely measured and perfectly aligned, turn both urban and rural America into a checkerboard landscape that stretches from horizon to horizon. In evidence throughout the country, but especially the West, the pattern is a hallmark of American life. One might consider it an administrative convenience—an easy way to divide land and lay down streets—but it is not. The colossal grid carved into the North American continent, argues historian and writer Dr. Amir Alexander, is a plan redolent with philosophical and political meaning. In 1784 Thomas Jefferson presented Congress with an audacious scheme to reshape the territory of the young United States. All western lands, he proposed, would be inscribed with a single rectilinear grid, transforming the natural landscape into a mathematical one. Following Isaac Newton and John Locke, he viewed mathematical space as a blank slate on which anything is possible and where new Americans, acting freely, could find liberty. And if the real America, with its diverse landscapes and rich human history, did not match his vision, then it must be made to match it. From the halls of Congress to the open prairies, and from the fight against George III to the Trail of Tears, Liberty's Grid: A Founding Father, a Mathematical Dreamland, and the Shaping of America (University of Chicago Press, 2024) tells the story of the battle between grid makers and their opponents. When Congress endorsed Jefferson's plan, it set off a struggle over American space that has not subsided. Transcendentalists, urban reformers, and conservationists saw the grid not as a place of possibility but as an artificial imposition that crushed the human spirit. Today, the ideas Jefferson associated with the grid still echo through political rhetoric about the country's founding, and competing visions for the nation are visible from Manhattan avenues and Kansan pastures to Yosemite's cliffs and suburbia's cul-de-sacs. An engrossing read, Liberty's Grid offers a powerful look at the ideological conflict written on the landscape. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Today, we're returning to the enchanting forests of the Spanish midlands and our beloved Delayed x Perpendicular series. We're excited to introduce a multidisciplinary artist whose work continues to inspire and surprise us - Javier Marimon. This Spaniard, who spent a significant time in the Far East exploring new cultures and perspectives, has been a key figure in the international underground music scene for many years. His unique approach to dub-infused techno, halftime, and experimental sounds infuses his creative process with playful energy, evident in his music production, DJing, and graphic design. Those fortunate enough to meet Javier in person are immediately struck by his infectious charisma and positive energy. While his music often leans toward the deeper, dubbier, and darker realms of electronic music, there's always a sense of freedom and playfulness in the way he combines elements and creates different rhythms. With that in mind, we're proud to present this special hybrid set that Javier played on Sunday midday at the Perpendicular Festival. The set is deep and dubby, with glitchy moments and meticulous attention to detail. The atmosphere Javier crafted perfectly matched the setting, and the set remains engaging from start to finish. The scene needs more artists like Javier Marimon, whose creative contributions continue to inspire others. We're thrilled to feature this mix. https://soundcloud.com/javiermarimon https://www.instagram.com/javiermrmn/ @espacio-perpendicular Follow us on social media: https://soundcloud.com/itsdelayed https://linktr.ee/delayed https://www.itsdelayed.com https://www.facebook.com/itsdelayed https://www.instagram.com/_____delayed https://www.youtube.com/@_____delayed

His set was a primal force, instantly gripping the crowd with a relentless halftime beat. Perpendicular Festival is a pilgrimage for electronic music devotees, who like their electronic music edgy, innovative, and deep, drawing them from across the globe to Spain's secluded woodlands. A brainchild of the crew behind Madrid's iconic Espacio Perpendicular venue, the festival features the vanguard of ambient and techno (and everything in between) over three days and nights. We are delighted and honored to present you with some of the sets from this year's edition of the Perpendicular Festival. Keep an eye on our "Delayed with..." series in the upcoming months because some incredible sets are coming your way. We are starting in style. Hardcore Chillout co-founder, a London-based artist Mark Geary, aka Eight Fold Way, who in his spare time explores the multidimensionality of sound, graced the decks on Sunday late afternoon. Even though it feels that there is overuse of terms like "journey," "trip," or "voyage," these types of DJ sets should be referred to as such without hesitation. Eight Fold Way expertly unveils new layers of sound as the set slowly develops from experimental ambient to chuggier and broken low-slung rhythms that, with such ease, morph into the deepest shades of techno. Once the listeners arrive at the bottom of the Mariana trench, Eight Fold Way keeps the tension sprinkled with several curveballs dipped in acid and quirky, very hypnotic percussions. The whole set feels like a natural progression from one style to another, and that's a quality of skillful DJ. Mark brings on proper UK vibes in the last quarter of the mix and finishes it with Neinzer's gem - Horus from Timedance's Patina Echoes compilation from a few years back. Trigonometry from Modern Latin trigonometria (Barthelemi Pitiscus, 1595), from Greek trigonon "triangle" from tri- "three"+ gōnia "angle, corner" + metron "a measure." "branch of mathematics that deals with relations between sides and angles of triangles," Geometry - “a measuring of the earth” from combining form of gē (gaia) "earth, land" + -metria "a measuring of" Geometry is, with arithmetic, one of the oldest branches of mathematics. It is concerned with properties of space such as the distance, shape, size, and relative position of figures. Parallel from para- "beside" + allēl "each other." in geometry, of lines, "lying in the same plane but never meeting in either direction." As a noun from 1550s, "a line parallel to another line." Meanings "a comparison made by placing things side by side" and "thing equal to or resembling another in all particulars" are from 1590s. Parallel bars as gymnastics apparatus is recorded from 1868. Perpendicular - "at right angles to the horizon," from per "thoroughly" (see per) + pendere "to hang, cause to hang; weigh" (from PIE root *(s)pen- "to draw, stretch, spin"). Percent - “by/through a hundred” from Modern Latin per centum "by the hundred" Angle - directly from Latin angulus "an angle, a corner," a diminutive form from PIE root *ang-/*ank- "to bend" (source also of Greek ankylos "bent, crooked," Latin ang(u)ere "to compress in a bend, fold, strangle;" Old Church Slavonic aglu "corner;" Lithuanian anka "loop;" Sanskrit ankah "hook, bent," angam "limb;" Old English ancleo "ankle;" Acute - from Latin acutus "sharp, pointed," figuratively "shrill, penetrating; intelligent, cunning," past participle of acuere "to sharpen" (literal and figurative) It was also used of humors (early 15c.). The meaning "ending in a sharp point" is from 1560s; the sense of "sharp or penetrating in intellect" is from 1580s. i.e. acute injury, acute inflammation, acute pancreatitis Obtuse from Latin obtusus "blunted, dull," also used figuratively, past participle of obtundere "to beat against, make dull," from ob "in front of; against" + tundere "to beat," from PIE *(s)tud-e- "to beat, strike, push, thrust," from root *(s)teu- "to push, stick, knock, beat" In geometry, in reference to a plane angle greater than a right angle." Calculus - from Latin calculus "reckoning, account," originally "pebble used as a reckoning counter," diminutive of calx (genitive calcis) "limestone." In medicine, the word also has been used to refer generally to "concretion occurring accidentally in the animal body," such as dental plaque; dental calculus. Sine - from Latin sinus "fold in a garment, bend, curve, bosom." Cosine “with the fold” “with” + “bend, curve” Tangent - "meeting at a point without intersecting," from Latin tangentem (nominative tangens), present participle of tangere "to touch." Addition - "action of adding numbers." from Latin additionem (nominative additio) "an adding to, addition," noun of action from past-participle stem of addere "add to, join, attach" “The action of” + “joining” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/liam-connerly/support

Nonthermal Electron Acceleration at Collisionless Quasi-perpendicular Shocks

Nonthermal Electron Acceleration at Collisionless Quasi-perpendicular Shocks by T. Amano et al. on Thursday 08 September Shock waves propagating in collisionless heliospheric and astrophysical plasmas have been studied extensively over the decades. One prime motivation is to understand the nonthermal particle acceleration at shocks. Although the theory of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) has long been the standard for cosmic-ray acceleration at shocks, plasma physical understanding of particle acceleration remains elusive. In this review, we discuss nonthermal electron acceleration mechanisms at quasi-perpendicular shocks, for which substantial progress has been made in recent years. The discussion presented in this review is restricted to the following three specific topics. The first is stochastic shock drift acceleration (SSDA), which is a relatively new mechanism for electron injection into DSA. The basic mechanism, related in-situ observations and kinetic simulations results, and how it is connected with DSA will be discussed. Second, we discuss shock surfing acceleration (SSA) at very high Mach number shocks relevant to young supernova remnants (SNRs). While the original proposal under the one-dimensional assumption is unrealistic, SSA has now been proven efficient by a fully three-dimensional kinetic simulation. Finally, we discuss the current understanding of the magnetized Weibel-dominated shock. Spontaneous magnetic reconnection of self-generated current sheets within the shock structure is an interesting consequence of Weibel-generated strong magnetic turbulence. We argue that high Mach number shocks with both Alfven and sound Mach numbers exceeding 20-40 will likely behave as a Weibel-dominated shock. Despite a number of interesting recent findings, the relative roles of SSDA, SSA, and magnetic reconnection for electron acceleration at collisionless shocks and how the dominant particle acceleration mechanisms change depending on shock parameters remain to be answered. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.03521v1

“So the plan is settled then,” Orion said. “Imogen will take Mimi to sell the wands we found in the Humming Forest. Juniper and I will network and find some new missions or locations to scour. And the rest of you will be sure to just enjoy yourselves. We’ve been working hard lately, and you all deserve a fun night on the town.”Helio chimed in, “ We will arrive at 13:00 local time, so the sun will have already set by then. The Chimera will be parked overnight in the harbor, so feel free to embark and disembark as you please. However, we aim to depart tomorrow at 06:00, so please return at least an hour before that.”“Ok everyone, enjoy your day off on the ship, and let’s regroup at 12:00 for dinner, and then we will deboard together after that,” Juniper said standing up. “Meeting adjourned. Hop to everyone; disperse!”The Dynamos left the bridge and went about their day aboard the Chimera. Juniper headed to the greenhouse off of the laboratory to meditate. Mimi joined her there to sketch some of the plants in her research journal. Delta went to the kitchen to start preparing food for the group and Bo joined, partially to learn some more about cooking, but also to be able to snack all day. Imogen made their way to the lab to grab the wands she had been studying before whisking them away to the library for more research. Fig and Salem first went to their room together and hung out there for a while before making their way to the rumpus room to play with the instruments and games. Vesper, Ash, Nico, and Helio all went to the gym where Vesper and Helio chatted while on treadmills, and Ash and Nico sparred on the mats. Orion stayed behind on the bridge to make sure the ship stayed its course and to work on their favorite task; data management and cleanup.Salvagers is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Around 12:00, everyone convened and had dinner together in the mess hall. Delta and Bo brought out bowls of a hearty stew they had made; enough to keep everyone energized but light enough so they would still have room to sample the snacks at the market. Afterward, Orion landed the ship in the dry harbor and spoke into the intercom, “We have arrived. The time is 13:13; make a wish and have fun!” And so the Dynamos disembarked the Chimera and made their way across the dry harbor to the Night Market. It was about a 15-minute walk along the paved path along the water’s edge. They could see the glowing bustle of the market in the distance with the quiet town of Calendula in the background. They eventually reached their destination and split off into small groups and made their way into the   wooden structure that was the Night Market.Bo turned to Ash and admitted, “I’ve never actually been to the Night Market before. This is my first time.”“Well, then I’ll take you around! I grew up here and would come almost every night.” Ash bolted ahead of the group, turning to call out to Bo, “Come on! You have to see the Feasting Grounds first.” “Oh! Ok, yeah!” Bo said starting to jog to keep up with Ash. The two of them passed through the entrance and dove headlong into the fray. Bo’s senses were immediately overwhelmed by the shouting of the vendors, the dozens of ever-changing scents, the kaleidoscopic luminescence emitting from the lanterns strung up above the stall, and the warmth of the bodies packed into these narrow corridors.Ash guided the pair down the maze-like pathways — left, left, forward, right, squeeze through a narrow gap between two stalls, left, forward, forward, right. They bobbed and weaved through the crowded narrow passageways. Bo clung to Ash’s hand so he wouldn’t stumble or lose track of his friend. “Hey! Watch where you’re going!” someone called out as Ash and Bo dove past a delivery person precariously balancing a stack of boxes in their arms. The smallest parcel from the top of the pile fell off amid the hustle and bustle, but Bo stopped to pick it up and apologize to the courier. Ash paused for a moment and turned around when she noticed that Bo was no longer following behind.“We’re almost there! Just a little further,” Ash beckoned to Bo.Bo’s stomach gurgled a little. He stood back up and walked over to Ash. “I’m starving! But can we just walk this last bit? I wanna take in the sights a little more.” Ash nodded and the two walked further into the din of the crowds — right, squeeze, left, forward, right, right, left, forward.Eventually, the corridor gave way to a large courtyard. The drooping cloth that hung overhead to protect the halls from the elements came to an end. Bo looked up and saw an enormous canopy slope upward and stretch out above the square. Luminous multichromatic lanterns strung along the large wooden beams holding the fabric up illuminated the scene. In front of the two youths lay a wide courtyard filled with tables and chairs in a haphazardly strewn-about layout. People of all types sat and ate food and sipped on drinks; chatting and laughing — filling the Feasting Ground with a rumbling din.The edges of the square were lined along all sides with food vendors of every kind and every scent to match. Steam and smoke wafted into the crisp night air filling the canopy with a fragrant haze. Ash explained, “First, we have to go around to all the stalls and get all the free samples we can get our hands onto. Then, we can get something to eat and head over to the Promenade. If you stay in here too long, your clothes will just smell like food for the next forever.”After nearly gorging themselves on little pieces of meat or vegetable stuck onto tiny wooden skewers, thimbles of beverages, small cups of rice mixtures, little spoons of ice cream, and bits of fudges, Bo and Ash finally decided to get some vulture legs. The vendor took their money and handed each of them a large thigh bone, sizzling hot and shining with a sour glaze. Holding the drumsticks the size of their arms by the protruding bone, the youngest members of the Dynamos left the Feasting Grounds and strolled down some more halls until they reached the edge of the Night Market.Perpendicular to the market ran a stretch of green land. The lamps blazed above, bathing the greenery in a soft warm glow. The two of them walked along and talked of what they dreamed their life would become as salvagers while wrenching chunks of flesh off the roasted vulture thighs, gazing at the full moon overhead.Salem headed into the Night Market alone; they didn’t get much time to themself and getting lost in a crowd was one of their favorite ways to remedy this. Salem eventually found their way to a booth filled with scrolls and hand-written booklets. They ran their hand along the spines and eventually landed on a black leather-bound book called “Romancing the Rock.” After skimming it for a moment, Salem smiled to themself and reached into their bag to pull out their wallet, but it wasn’t there. “Looking for something?” Salem recognized the voice and looked up to see Nico standing in front of them dangling the wallet from their fingers. “Juniper wants to read it when you’re done. She had the sense yesterday that you were going to forget your wallet, so she sent me to bring it to you.” Salem grabbed the leather bifold and paid for the novel at the counter. The older woman there nodded and rang up the order. “13 circles, please.”  Salem handed over two yellow bills with an equilateral triangle embossed on the front, and the shopkeep handed back 11 red paper bills with a circular mark along with the book. Salem stashed the cash back into their wallet, tucked the book and billfold into their bag, and stood up tall to face Nico.Nico asked Salem, “Have you been to the Night Market before?”“I came once when I was ten years old. I haven’t been back in 12 years, so I don’t remember much,” Salem said, tucking their prematurely graying hair behind their ear.“Let me show you around, then. There is a fortune teller on the western side I always go to see whenever I’m here. I hope he’s still around. Care to join me in my quest to find out?”Salem replied, “Yes. Let’s go.” The two of them walked in a single file line barely speaking to each other, simply taking in the sights and scents and the roar of the crowd. They stayed to the left, pushed along by the flow of foot traffic. After about a half hour, the two arrived at “Tandem and Tea.” The booth’s entrance was draped in a thick purple fabric.Nico quizzed Salem,” Have you ever heard of Tandem cards?”Salem confidently said, “Of course. The Tandem is a practice of either meditation or divination recovered from the Past era. An archivist named… what was it again?” Salem’s eyes darted up to the right to recall. “Yes, her name was Kiffin Henrie. In the year 266, while exploring in the North, Henrie found these symbolic cards centered around archetypal dualisms. After dedicating years of her life to the research, she published the deck of cards with an illustrated guidebook replete with all the imagery illustrated alongside the text. Kiffen Henrie called these ‘The Tandem,’ which has remained a popular practice for those without the sense.” Salem paused for a moment before commenting, “Juniper said that regular people really could tap into the sense using the Tandem, but I don’t really believe it.”“Care to test out that theory?” Nico said in a theatrically ominous tone as they pulled back the curtains. They entered the dimly lit booth that stretched away from the entrance a considerable distance. On all sides, a thick burgundy fabric draped in a way where the folds rippled in semi-circles down from the ceiling. A figure dressed in all white stood to greet them.“Welcome to Tandem and Tea, my name is Eunice. Please have a seat.” Eunice’s hair was long, ash blonde, and wavy, pulled back into a half ponytail to keep the loose strands out of his eyes. Eunice’s beard was a darker blonde with a strawberry tinge — full but trimmed neatly to frame his face. “What kind of tea would you like? We’ve got an herbal blend, a jolted blend, and a light blend.“Jolted for me,” said Salem. Nico nodded in agreement. “Two jolted, then.” Eunice gave them a nod and pulled on a string, which connected to a bell that was built into a square hole between this stall and the one next door. Eunice rang the bell twice, waited a moment, and then rang the bell twice again. “I have an arrangement with the cafe next door,” Eunice explained with a grin, “Please sit, sit!” Nico and Salem obliged arranging themselves across from the Eunice in front of a low table. “How may I be of assistance?”“Yeah, how about something for the team?” Nico checked in with Salem, who nodded in agreement. “What about a now, soon, and later spread?”“A classic. That will be 8 eight circles,” which Salem paid. “Start shuffling these, and while you do that, please tell me a little about the team. A crumb of context to precipitate the Tandem’s sense.” Salem took the stack of cards and did an over-hand shuffle while Nico explained, “We are a team of salvagers — the Dynamos if you’ve heard of us. We find things.” Eunice nodded, “Ah yes, your reputation certainly precedes you. You’re a bit more serious than I thought you might be with a name like that. Curious.”“Yes well, we have recently upgraded our ship to take on a team of apprentices to train. Salem here is one of them, while I’m from the original crew. My name is Nico, by the way.”“Cut the deck into two piles, please,” Eunice said to Salem, who obliged. “Now, back into one; however you choose. Very good, please pass them back to me.” Eunice took the stack of cards and flipped the top three into a row. Opportunity, Labor, and Division. The bell rang overhead, and a curtain lifted to reveal a small window. Eunice stood and passed the cups to Salem and Nico who blew on them to cool the tea. “Let’s begin!”Eunice pointed to the leftmost card. “Now is a time of opportunity, and it seems work will come to you soon. I’m curious what sort of jobs you will embark upon.” Eunice pulled two more cards and placed them below the first two; Deception and Curiosity. “Interesting; for salvagers, I bet it will be some sort of reconnaissance mission and perhaps some sort of exploration of some long-forgotten ruins. How exciting!“However, something tragic will happen later. Perhaps something will split your team? A disagreement perhaps? Let’s check.” Eunice pulled another card and placed it below Division; Descent. “Perhaps some great fall. The question now is whether this is something metaphorical or literal.” Eunice rifled through the deck and found two cards. He shuffled them back and forth and eventually took one in each hand and put them behind his back. “Left or right?”Salem quickly said, “Left!” Eunice revealed the Tandem card: Material. “Well, you'd better look out below!”  Next time on Salvagers:Imogen and Mimi sell the magic wands from the Humming Forest, while Vesper and Delta relive their first date on their anniversary. Join me for a summary of Madhur's lecture on the biomechanics and aligners, where he describes the fundamentals biomechanics of aligners, explains the reason for the shortcomings of aligners and his tips to reduce them. How do aligner work? Two approaches Shape moulding effect – shape driven Move position of teeth to ideal Invisalign 80% through shape moulding Attachments 20% force delivery Perpendicular surface with Invisalign When shape moulding is considered 2g/mm2 of stress, with attachments 20g/mm2, higher stress to aligner, which is a downside How to aligners treat malocclusions Deep bite “Water-melon seed effect” – squeeze a seed and it compression it moves left or right Squeezing through shape moulding effect Aligners can apply force through to the centre of resistance of the tooth Openbite Advantages in aligners when compared to fixed Draw bridge effect Relative extrusion through Retroclination 60% drawer bridge effect Harris 2020 Lever principle Autorotation effect 28% Harris 2020 Space closure Common lateral openbite in space closure, why this happens Equal moment to posterior and anterior segment during space closure Counterclockwise posterior segment, clockwise anterior segment = BOWING EFFECT Does not commonly happen in fixed due to archwire rigidity How good are aligners at moving teeth Root movement NOT OBSERVED! Space closure Extraction of 4 premolars - Dai 2019 Molars 2mm unplanned anchorage loss 6 degree molar tipping Incisors Retrocline 6 degrees more No incisor root retraction – uncontrolled tipping Root movement Conclusion: Roots cannot be moved with aligners such appliances cause tooth movement by tilting motion Zhang 2015 Why can't aligners move teeth as efficiently as braces? First principles based understanding Interplay of dumping and counterplay of moment = bodily tooth movement Braces – create AND CHANGE couple and counter couple through size of wire, material Aligner – cannot change material properties Material factors Stress-relaxation 80% of force lost after 100 minutes Fang 2019 AJODO Modulus of elasticity – ability to transfer energy Higher modulus – greater tooth movement Niti 45GPa, Aligner 1-2GPa Khoda 2013 Inferior in delivering energy Viscoelastic material Absorbing shock, dissipating energy in the form of heat Ideal for retainer – force dampener Biomechanics is the law – everything else is just a recommendation Madur's lecture in full available on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycNokW1ojIY&t=3s&ab_channel=orthobites.org

Join me as I summarise the 1st day of the Saudi Orthodontic Clear Aligner meeting, where Mazyar Moshiri delivered a masterclass on biomechanics with aligners. Conclusions: · Attachment design: perpendicular to resultant force · Rotations: Place oblique attachment to counter intrusive force of aligner · Overcorrect torque, add mesial crown tip due to wagon wheel effect · Deep bite: synergistic movements: proclinatiion and extrusion · AOB: synergistic movements: retroclination and extrusion Concepts Intrusion attachment 1. Intrusion on aligners a. No intrusion attachment o Require attachments on adjacent teeth o If loss of tracking = occurs on adjacent teeth, with the aligner extruded off the teeth Rotation and intrusion · Force labial face and palatal face to create rotation moment. · ‘Squeeze force' occurs = vertical force = intrusion force. · Solution o Optimised attachment = Extrusive vector, usually gingival bevel and oblique o Resolve resultant force, horizontal and vertical = oblique attachment Torque · Wagon wheel effect, for every 4 degrees of lingual crown torque there is distal crown tipping / mesial root tipping. o Solution: OFFSET with 1 degree of mesial crown tip · Torque lags behind, takes longer , like rectangular NiTi archwire · Buccal root torque: Upper molar buccal attachment to provide extrusive buccal force to create moment. Design of attachment · KEY CONCENT: Attachment perpendicular to the force · Perpendicular force to rotation = Long vertical attachment · But rotational force has intrusive force the ‘squeeze force' o Therefore horizontal and vertical force = attachment perpendicular to the force = oblique attachment Root tip · Open space 0.2mm interproximal = so more plastic wrap around tooth · Then start root movement in staged way. Deep bite Concept: Synergistic movements, procline = relative intrusion Staging AP movements o Proclination 1st to open the bite o Then IPR § Not at the same time as IPR = retroclination, therefore should not procline and iPR at the same time as bite will not open § Does round trip – procline and intrude, then IPR and align Staging deep bite · Staging of OB, canines intrude 1st, then 2-2 · Likely loose tracking on lower incisors or 4s – anchorage horizontal G5/G7 attachments Curve of Spee · If COS not corrected, then AP also difficult to correct · If not correct COS: o Posterior openbite – caused by anterior interferences § Caused by inadequate attachment § Lack of over correction OGN case deep bite · Order 10 passive aligners near end stage pre surgery = minimum 2 months to make up for ‘lag' or vivera retainer / essix – thicker, greater expression of torque · TAD – intermaxillary elastics x 2 o TAD maxilla: § Buttons lower premolars § Intermaxillary elastics to guide lower premolar teeth into the tray Openbites Concept Synergistic movement: Retrocline and extrude · Aligners do not extrude along the long access · Aligner pushes tooth lingually and extrudes in the process, retroclines Posterior intrusion is unpredictable, anterior extrusion is more likely Thank you to the Saudi Orthodontic Society for facilitating this podcast

Please Leave a Review! The latest A Tale of Two Hygienists delves into the particulars of X-ray imagining and how hygienists can keep on top of this irradiating subject through continuing education. To this end, Michelle has invited back a guest who has appeared on the show enough times that she might as well be considered an honorary co-host.   Emily Boge, RDH, is the dental administrative chair at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa, and serves as the program chairs for dental assisting and dental hygiene. In addition, she is a product innovator for American Eagle Instruments and a speaker/consultant under her own Think Big Dental brand.    In this episode, Emily discusses one of the more difficult radiology imaging concepts for hygiene students to grasp, emphasizes how hygienists are accountable for what's on the X-ray image, and defines the oddly-named S.L.O.B. rule.     EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:   Interview starts: 3:54   - What you can expect out of Emily's “Five Hour Power Pack” for radiology CE.   - Why Emily can't imagine learning without a phosphor plate.   - Taking a closer look at some key terminology using a popsicle stick analogy.   - When should you bisect the angle?   - The “safe zone” for a handheld X-ray and how Emily's height complicated using that device.   - What is the S.L.O.B. rule?     QUOTES:   “The key to... understanding anything in X-ray is to understand parallel vs. perpendicular.”   “It's very important when you first start taking X-rays that you learn correctly.”   “You don't have to have a fancy, fancy camera to be able to get high quality intraoral images.”   “It takes one patient to pay for that one intraoral camera.” LINKS: Emily's email - emily@thinkbigdental.com OR emily.boge@hawkeyecollege.edu      THIS EPISODE COUNTS FOR CE! - but read the disclaimer below as it might not count for your state. His degree is in Scriptwriting for Film & Television, though it's theatrical plays he's been working on recently. One went into rehearsals in Bristol before lockdown (timing!), though a short monologue was accepted as part of an online fundraising event for Shakespeare's Globe (the piece was entitled 'Ghost's Alive'). He has been part of a collaborative team of writers for Open For Theatre, a company striving to keep theatre alive in these difficult times for the arts. His main project currently is a N/F novel recounting my last ten years as an HIV+ individual and the misunderstood truths attendant with the condition. Many of the themes he writes about have been dictated by these experiences. He has been experimenting with different genres and formats (such as children's literature) for the past few years and has been enjoying the process immensely. He hopes you, too, enjoy this read!
