Here's what got us asking “what's the plan, Alderaan”. Maybe you've heard it before : “I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person, but my ship has fallen under attack and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed. I have placed information vital to the survival of the Rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit. My father will know how to retrieve it. You must see this droid safely delivered to him on Alderaan. This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.” Okay but what was the plan here? And then what was the original plan before that plan? Join us as we ask the serious questions about just what was supposed to happen and what if 3PO didn't get in the escape pod AND what if Galen Erso lived? What can one say about Rogue One that hasn't already been said. Releasing almost a year after The Force Awakens, anticipation was high for the franchise's first theatrical spinoff attempt. Nowadays I can't remember if going into the theater, everyone knew the story would be about how the rebels managed to steal the plans for the Death Star. I seem to remember the plot to the DOOM clone Dark Forces involved kidnapping the character General Nadine (who would be seen on screen for the first time in a terrible fake beard in Return of the Jedi). I'm most likely wrong but, I vaguely remember that the reason Kyle Katarn kidnaps Nadine is because he's the one Imperial who defects and helps the fledgling alliance steal the plans in the first place. Kyle Katarn is also the first character in the Star Wars Universe to utilize the now legendary Bryar Pistol that Cassian Andor also carries as his sidearm. The impetus for the film originates in a throw away line in A New Hope. We all know Leia hides the plans for the Death Star in R2-D2 but, we never learn how she came to acquire them until now. We learn the weakness in the Death Star was a design flaw engineered by it's captive creator Galen Erso portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen. Excellent performance by an excellent actor who at this point in his career, has portrayed more villains than heroes. Here he does a great job and with the death of wife Lyra, his character has all the motivation he needs to plot his revenge over the twenty plus years of construction of the deadliest weapon every conceived. I think by far everyone's favorite character ending up being K-2SO portrayed by Alan Tudyk. Even though he's portraying a droid, there was more humanity in the lines delivered by Tudyk's motion capped performance than the rest of cast combined. Of course it was also really cool to see Darth Vader in a movie other than the the original trilogy. James Earl Jones does a great job with his limited lines. Director Krennic portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn also does a fantastic job portraying an evil character. I think it was Chris Stuckmann who really loved how Mendelsohn chewed the scenery and went FULL EVIL VILLAIN in the scenes he was in. Well done to the casting director that hired him. My favorite scene was of course the naval battle at the end. Especially when Admiral Raddus notices the disabled Star Destroyer and uses Hammerhead Corvette to ram it which then turn it into a giant needle to pierce through the planetary shield protecting Scarif. Awesome sequence! I loved every second of it. Thank you for listening to this Special Edition of the Star Wars Re-Watch Podcast.      This week we discuss ancient history in a place not remotely near any of us.      It is a time of dishevel as the Trade Federation takes negotiations to drastic levels. Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi attempt to open new lines of communication, only to be hurled into a multi-planet adventure where they will discover The Space Messiah and face off against... STAR WARS: EPISODE 1- The Phantom Menace!     Ten years have passed and still no Jedi has come to understand the concept of balance. Obi-Wan finds himself on a mission in a missing solar system. Anakin Skywalker finds himself getting funky with a senator in the Naboo lake area. Soon the long brewing war will boil over into full intergalactic slaughter. STAR WARS: EPISODE 2- Attack of the Clones.     Three more years have come and gone. Anakin feels that not enough of his fellow Jedi kiss his butt enough, so he joins the Dark Side with little to no prompting. Obi-Wan has a side story against a robot general to take him out of the main action. Some folks love it, others do not. Still you can't argue that it's the last in the Prequel Trilogy... STAR WARS: EPISODE 3- Revenge of the Sith.     Fifteen years ago Galen Erso was ripped from his hiding place to help the Empire build their ultimate weapon and his daughter, Jyn, was taken under the wing of super rebel Saw Gerrera. Since then Jyn has grown into a full tilt bad ass action hero. When Galen gets a message out about a weakness he has hidden in the ultimate weapon, Jyn gathers a team to get the plans and make sure that it is never used on the repressed planets. She gathers a team including BFFs Baze Malbus and Chirrut Îmwe. Unfortunately, the Resistance saddles her with an incompetent babysitter named Cassian Andor. Andor is just there interrupt all character moments and incompetently stumbles in the way of every other while making sure no one ever stops thinking about better similar characters that appeared in the other movies. Andor is the fucking worst and ensures that they can't possibly succeed in Rogue One: A STAR WARS STORY.     All that and Tyler feels something akin to joy, Dave's suffering manifests as actual tooth pain, and Kevin stops to smell a lot of roses as a desperate measure of holding on to his sanity.Join us, won't you?Episode 259- PADME!

This is the eighth episode in a series of looks at how the nature of hope is depicted in the Star Wars movies. Previous episodes focused on the movies in order of theatrical release, so we've already gone through the Original Trilogy, the Prequel Trilogy, and The Force Awakens to date. Today, we look at Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. From the morally good and hopeful center of the movie (Galen Erso) to immoral and hopeful (Cassian), moral yet hopeless (much of the Alliance leadership), immoral and increasingly hopeless (Saw Gerrera), and finally to the person who goes from the deepest depths of hopelessness to acting on hope with the razor-thinnest of margins (Jyn), Rogue One is quite possibly the Star Wars movie that's more thoroughly driven by hope than any other. Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Join the community at http://Patreon.com/sw7x7 to get access to bonus episodes and other insider rewards.***

节目组:The Screen Age 荧屏时代 节目名称:Rogue One: A Star War StoryF: Hello, everyone. Welcome back to the Screen Age. This is your old friend Flat.B: This is Bob Bee. Flat, did you see any good films recently? I heard that there are many star-studded films.F: Oh, I don't quite like those kinds of movies,it's just meaningless commercial films with embarrassing point.B: I agree with you. Even the science fiction movie, Arrival, is so boring that I almost fall asleep when I saw it.F: But I would like to recommend to you the prequel of Star War, Rogue One. I almost became fans of Star War.B: So, why not introduce it to our audiences.F: Sure, let's begin.F: The story begins in the early years of Galactic Empire. Orson Krennic, a high-ranking Imperial military officer and a group of people come to find Galen Erso. His aim is to get Galen to come back to the work for the Empire.B: In order to protect his daughter, Jyn Erso, Galen tells her to run away. Jyn's mother is killed when she tries to stop Orson and Galen is taken away.F: Then, fifteen years passed, the Empire is plan to create a weapon capable of destroying entire planets.Meanwhile, on the planet Jedha, a pilot who has defected from the Empire and wants to join the Rebels. He escaped from the empire and carries a message from Galen which is really important.B: On the planet Wobani, Jyn is being transferred with other prisoners, but suddenly Rebel forces break in and free them. And then they go to the moon Yavin 4, the location of Rebel base of operations.F: The Rebels think that finding Saw Gerrera and the captured pilot is paramount to find out what the Empire is plotting. So they go to Jedha. On the way finding Saw, they meet Chirrut Imwe, a blind warrior and Baze Malbus, they help them to find Saw.B: After they find the pilot, Jyn gets the information form a hologram sent by her father. In the message, her father says that there is fail-safe in the weapon, Death Star, explode it and the entire thing dies.F: Knowing the important message, Jyn and a dozen other rebel fighters head to Scarif to find the Death Star plans. And they named their ship as Rogue One.B: After a furious war, they finally get the plan and send it to the Rebels. However the planet Scarif is destroyed and all the fighters are sacrificed.F: I must say, I'm impressed by the performance of Wen Jiang and Donnie Yen. To be honest, before seeing this film, I think that if Chinese actors go to play Hollywood film, it will be embarrassed. Not only the language but also the performance style. But in this film, the two Chinese actors really did a good job. Their English is good and the two characters played by them are really cute.B: Donnie Yen also show his wonderful action performance in this film. Seems like he is carrying the Chinese kongfu to the galaxy.F: The main actress is played by Felicity Jones, who also played the wife of Hawking in The Theory of Everything.B: This young actress really got a talent. And her two front teeth really drew my attention.B: It is said that in a good prequel, everyone should die in the end of the movie. So Rogue One is a good prequel. It had everything required to make a great movie.F: Indeed. Even I haven't seen the previous Star War movies, I can feel the excitement. When I heard the sentence, “May the force be with you”, I was as excited as the die-hard SW fans were.B: It's better than The Force Awakens, without too many light sabers and Skywallkers.F: Time flies, so this is today's movie, hope you like it.B: And may the force always be with you.F: 最后感谢制作张安康。See you next time, Bye.B: Bye.

Y no, no sale Anna Paquin!

We catch up with her later, as an adult, having been traiend by Saw Gerrera on the ways of the solider, then imprisoned, but Cassian Andor, an espionage agent working for the the Rebel Alliance, sees her potentially helping their side to find the scientist, assembling a rag-tag team of fighters to go on a mission to snatch the blueprints, including one that exploits an Achilles Heel, from the Death Star before it wreaks havoc on a terrified Rebel Alliance.

#21: Rogue One Trailer Dissection

Hyperspace Theories

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2016 45:27

This month Lucasfilm released the full-length theatrical trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. After our first recording of our reactions to the trailer was mangled by a pack of electronic gremlins, we sat down to record them again. In the meantime, several more interesting comments about the film emerged in the entertainment press, so we were able take those into account in our comments on the trailer this time. This trailer for Rogue One is notable in several respects. For one, it continues the trend we've discussed previously: portraying Jyn much more as an inspiring leader taking charge of a mission against the Empire, rather than the belligerent criminal reluctantly conscripted into the Rebellion we saw in the first teaser. This also calls to mind Kathleen Kennedy's description of Jyn back in June, but with more emphasis on Jyn as "a kind of Joan of Arc in the story" rather than as a "streetwise delinquent." In addition, this trailer has marked differences from the trailers for The Force Awakens last year. It appears to flow roughly in chronological order for the film: from Jyn's childhood to her liberation from Imperial custody by the Rebels, to the Yavin base and on to Jedha, and then to Scarif. The Rogue One trailer also reveals much more about the story of the film: who the protagonist characters are and what they are fighting for. While we still wonder whether the timeline placement in relation to the other Star Wars films will be clear enough to the casual audience who hasn't been paying close attention to the marketing of Rogue One to date, this trailer is a definite improvement in providing an "elevator pitch" for the movie to those fans. Now we have a better sense of who these characters are, and why we should root for them. Check out the episode for our full thoughts on the trailer, including Director Krennic, Galen Erso, Darth Vader, and more.
