Over a year into German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's famous Zeitenwende speech calling Russia's invasion of Ukraine a "historic turning point" in Germany's defense policy and pledging €100 billion in increased military spending, many in Washington have criticized Scholz for not following up on its implementation. In this week's episode of The Eastern Front, Giselle, Dalibor, and Iulia speak with Amb. Christoph Heusgen, chairman of the Munich Security Conference, to discuss all things Zeitenwende; both its successes—such as German independence from Russian energy—and the work that is being done to "change the DNA" of many Soviet Union-era Germans who feel indebted to former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev for Germany's unification. Heusgen also shares his thoughts on German-Polish and German-French relations, NATO membership for Ukraine, division amongst the original Visegrád countries, and what future global competition is shaping out to look like.Show notes: Sign up for The Eastern Front's biweekly newsletter here. Singer and songwriter Jack Savoretti is described in pretty much every interview I came across as both extremely talented and also very charming perhaps it is this combination that has led to Jack's stellar career. He tells us of his idyllic childhood Summers spent in the Italian Riviera, why he's grateful that his success didn't happen overnight and reveals a surprising yet delicious final desert island dish. Jack's one of the most successful singer / songwriters in the UK and has collaborated with the likes of Kylie Minogue, Bob Dylan and Nile Rogers and performed to a sold out Wembley Arena. He had an international upbringing, with an Italian father and a German-Polish mother, moving from London to Switzerland, and spending idyllic childhood summers in Portofino, Italy, where his father's family come from. After falling in love with music at the age of 15 it was a somewhat slow-burning rise to fame for Jack as a musician. He toured the UK for several years, quietly growing his fanbase and it was his sixth album, Singing to Strangers, that finally hit the number one spot. His most recent record, the gorgeous sun-soaked, feel good and star-studded Europiana – inspired by his European upbringing and life –was also a chart-topper and arguably his best work to date. Thank you so much for listening.Thank you to our season sponsor Lloyds bank for supporting us and helping us bring the podcast to you each week. Leading German politician: if Russia invaded Poland, Germany would be at war with Russia

The guest of Onet.pl's "International Report" was Dietmar Nietan, German Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinator of German-Polish relations, Bundestag member and ruling SPDs's treasurer (member of the party's national leadership)   D. Nietan, in response to the podcast's presenter's question, whether in the event of Russia invading for example Estonia both Poland and Germany would be at war with Russia, and similarly whether Germany would be at war with Russia, had Russia invaded Poland, replied "absolutely." When asked about the status of the NATO-Russia Founding Act, he said that in his opinion the document was "dead".   The German politician also stated that Germany, taking into account the need to become independent from Russian energy resources, will have to look differently at coal, which is a factor of energy independence.   When asked about the supply of weapons from Germany to Ukraine, he stated that he understood how upset both Poland as well as other countries in the region were with the pace of these deliveries, but stressed that this was due to the fact that Germany had over many years neglected investments in German armed forces. Commenting on the issue of the supply of German tanks, which, according to President Andrzej Duda, were to be delivered to Poland in exchange for the tanks handed over by Poland to Ukraine, the representative of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that no specific arrangements had ever been made in this matter.   When asked about the status of former chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in the SPD, Dietmar Nietan stated that there was a consensus in the SPD that the former chancellor was no longer "one of us".   Referring to the anti-German campaign in the Polish state media, he noted that what it causes is that hardly anyone in Germany wants to deal with relations with Poland today. At the same time, he emphasized that he positively - from the left-wing perspective - assessed such activities of Poland's Law and Justice such as handing out child benefits. The above, according to Nietan is a departure from neoliberalism and demonstrates concern for social justice.

We mark the birth on August 23, 1854 – 167 years ago today – of the German-Polish composer, pianist, and teacher Moritz Moszkowski in the Prussian/Silesian city of Breslau, today the Polish city of Wrocław. He died in Paris on March 4, 1925, at the age of 70. Moszkowski was one of the most famous pianist-composers of his time, someone who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Franz Liszt (1811-1886), Anton Rubinstein (1829-1894), Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924), Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), and Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941) Paderewski paid his friend and fellow Pole Moszkowski the ultimate compliment when he said that:  “After Chopin [who was, and remains, the great Polish national hero] Moszkowski best understands how to write for the piano, and his writing embraces the whole gamut of piano technique.” In the end – painfully, tragically, inevitably (or so it so often seems) – talent, success, and fame were no match for time, aging, and illness, and died in obscurity and poverty, a broken man. Sadly and unjustly, he and his music languish in near-total obscurity today.… Continue reading, only on Patreon! Brian Kuan Wood talks to Daniel van der Velden of Metahaven (Vinca Kruk and Daniel van der Velden) on the occasion of their exhibition at e-flux titled Turnarounds. Turnarounds consists of the film installation Hometown (2018), a new series of textile pieces, and an essay in e-flux journal. Hometown focuses its ultra-wide, hypnotic gaze on two cities—Beirut and Kyiv—that merge into a fictional home for the film’s protagonists, Ghina Abboud and Lera Luchenko. Fluorescent, lava-like animations alternate between images of industrial estates and overgrown gardens as Ghina and Lera lyrically describe the town. A caterpillar gets killed, but while mourning the loss, both evade responsibility for the crime. With their monologue in Russian and Arabic colorfully subtitled in English and Ukrainian, they eat ice cream. Their laughter solves puzzles, and there is a sunken city inhabited by adults who forgot what children taught them. The script of Hometown draws on a genre of Russian children poems called perevortyshi (“turnarounds,” or “twisters”). In perevortyshi, positive statements are provisionally joined with their opposites to the great joy of both narrator and listener. These poems are, in their playfulness, also fundamentally questioning our reliance on verbal statements in order to approach reality. In "Sleep walks the street," an essay for e-flux journal no. 102 that will go live when the exhibition opens, Metahaven interrogate our current tendency to aestheticize politics by relying on the cognitive guidance of metaphorical and allegorical construction. Examining figures of speech that normalize not just words but also entire semantic contexts and cognitive patterns, they reference the work of the German-Polish linguist Victor Klemperer (1881–1960) who studied the language of the Nazis. In searching for potential antidotes, Metahaven focus on the work of the Russian poets Alexander Vvedensky (1904–1941) and Daniil Kharms (1905–1942), as well as the contemporary poets Eugene Ostashevsky, Jackie Wang, and Galina Rymbu. In addition to the film installation and the essay, a new series of digitally created textile pieces is installed throughout the public and private spaces at e-flux. Bearing titles like Mise-en-Anthroposcene, Skyrofoam, and Now You Know You Now, Metahaven’s recent textile works draw on the thematic and affective tropes they have embraced since their documentary The Sprawl: Propaganda About Propaganda from 2015. The work of Metahaven consists of filmmaking, writing, and design. Hometown will be on view at e-flux through November 2, 2019.
