"I wanted to capture that sense of secrecy and tension that seems to exist within the narrative of the story. This idea that you cannot record in these areas and also the idea of stress associated with travel and border control etc. This idea that it's illegal to cross a border without going through this process but also illegal to record the process you go through to remain legal. The whole feeling I got was one of complete tension, frustration and claustrophobia but also the sense of getting home or beyond this. "So I wanted to try and capture how I imagined it would feel to be bossed around while trying to remain calm and get home or to work. The piece is punctuated with moments of calmer piano but surrounded by a non-stop interference and static created through manipulating the piano and other source material - including the field recording. The idea was to generate a sense of how it feels to be in this kind of tiring and stressful environment with little or no control and perhaps a disengagement from reality that is often created in these environments.  "I started with just the field recording and piano but slowly added to this and developed this sense of suffocation/claustrophobia. As the piece comes towards a conclusion I removed many of the fx and brought it back down to just the piano. I was attempting to imagine the journey and the feeling of an ending and quiet release, at least for a time until the next journey."   UK/France border crossing reimagined by Glacis. Das Glacis Open Air in Magdeburg hat sich vor einigen Jahren aus den Wohnzimmerkonzerten, die dort regelmäßig veranstaltet werden, heraus entwickelt. Einmal im Jahr findet es statt und bietet ein vielfältiges Programm bei freiem Eintritt: Musik Acts auf mehreren Bühnen, Workshops, Lesungen, Führungen, Foodstände, Kino und vieles mehr… Das Besondere: Alles wird hier von Freiwilligen organisiert und umgesetzt. In unserem Gespräch erklärt Karl Vocelka, ehemaliger Vorstand des Insituts für Geschichte an der Universität Wien, die militärische, gesellschaftliche, wirtschaftliche und politische Bedeutung der Ringstraße und erläutert den Kontext, in dem dieser Prachtboulevard geplant und erbaut wurde. Er zeigt auf, dass die Ringstraße auch nach der sogenannten Gründerzeit und dem Ende der Monarchie eine wichtige symbolische Bedeutung für Wien und Österreich hatte.

Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wuchs die Stadt Wien. Die Vororte wurden eingemeindet und die ehemalige Befestigungsanlage rund um die "Inneren Stadt" wurde nicht nur obsolet, sondern sogar als gefährlich wahrgenommen. Also ordnete Kaiser Franz Josef I. 1857 mittels "Handbillet" die Schleifung der ehemaligen Festungsanlage mit ihren Bastionen und Glacis an. An ihrer Stelle sollte ein von repräsentativen Gebäuden gesäumter "Prachtboulevard" enstehen, auf dem ein rasches Vorgehen gegen potenzielle revolutionäre Bewegungen möglich wäre. Um die Errichtung der Prachtbauten zu finanzieren, wurde der "Stadterweiterungsfonds" eingerichtet, der die 'Wiener Stadtpolitik auch im 21.Jahrhundert noch beschäftigt.

The GFT panel are back to a full compliment of 4 members to discuss everything that has happened in Gibraltar football in the first 2 weeks in December. A round of up of the Premier League and La Liga games as at 16th Dec 2013. A round up of the champions league & world cup draws in addition to our predictor game where the panelists look to improve on their poor predictions in week 1.

I remember being mocked at school by someone (a fucking idiot) I knew for swithering on whether the piano or the violin was my favourite instrument in pop music.  She was adamant that the obvious and only answer to that question was the guitar, but then she also liked Lenny Kravitz, so I think that her opinion can be utterly disregarded on principle.Anyhow, there's not much old music on this one, which I suppose there could easily have been.  Instead, there's a few very new things, a few things from about five years ago, some stuff from about ten years ago and a couple of tunes from the early nineties.Also, it's not supposed to be exhaustive, definitive nor indeed at all academic.  This is just a bunch of songs I like with a lot of piano on them, not a verbal essay on the history and importance of piano music. 01.
