Dr. Gisela Kreglinger, who grew up on a family-owned winery in Franconia, Germany, is an independent researcher who long ago noticed the peculiar prominence of wine and vineyards in both the Old and New Testaments. In this episode she talks about learning the biblical languages in preparation for her work and their contribution to a sound understanding of the Bible's topics. In doing so, she highlights some key lessons taught through the agricultural theme of wine and vineyards in the Bible. Dr. Kreglinger has published Cup Overflowing: Wine's Place in Faith, Feasting, and Fellowship and The Spirituality of Wine, among other things. She also contributed articles to The Oxford Companion to Wine. In a different vein, she wrote, Storied Revelations: Parables, Imagination, and George MacDonald's Christian Fiction. Oh MAN, you are in for a treat this week! I have not one, but two incredible guests joining me: Randy Frazee and Gisela Kreglinger. Randy is the lead teaching pastor at Westside Family Church in Kansas City and a visionary in Bible engagement, spiritual formation, and building biblical community. He's the architect behind The Story and Believe church engagement campaigns and the author of books like The Joy Challenge and Think, Act, Be Like Jesus. Gisela grew up on a winery in Franconia, Germany, where her family has been crafting wine for generations. She holds multiple degrees in Biblical Studies and a PhD in Historical Theology from the University of St Andrews. Her passion lies at the intersection of food, faith, and joy, which she explores through her writing, teaching, and wine pilgrimages. Together, they are the brilliant minds behind Wine in the Word, a Bible study that explores the theology of wine, its biblical significance, and how it connects with the Christian life. This conversation was unlike anything I've ever had on the show. It was thought-provoking, eye-opening, and honestly, I could've talked to these two for hours! Get ready for a super fascinating discussion! 4:27 – Randy 101 • Lead pastor for 36 years • Writer and author • Husband, father and grandfather • Working on this project with Gisela 6:03 – Gisela 101 • Growing up on a winery • Theologian, teacher, and writer • Wine tastings and pilgrimages 7:24 – The Story Behind “Wine In The Word” • Randy and Gisela's backgrounds • How this collaboration came to be • Wine as a bridge builder 13:55 – The Role Of Wine In The Bible • The historical context of wine in America • Wine consumption in Christian context • Reclaiming wine as a gift from God • Teaching your children to have a healthy relationship with wine 26:54 – “Holy Tipsiness” • Wine as a social lubricant • An invitation to community + sharing God's gifts • Addressing opposition to wine consumption 45:25 – Takeaways • Teaching about wine in a healthy, biblical context • Learn more about Wine In The Word • Randy and Gisela's prayer for this study FEATURED QUOTES “I just feel like it's time that we stop looking at wine through the lens of our culture.” - Randy Frazee “Wine is really an invitation to community, to sharing the gifts of God. You know, wine and bread and all food that the earth brings forth are gifts from God. They are not just things out there that we need to eat. They're actually God's love language.” – Gisela Kreglinger “You don't even have to drink or like wine, but you should know about what wine is teaching us in God.” - Randy Frazee “We as the church have always been called to show how to live and how to live well as God has intended it, and I think we need to do that.” – Gisela Kreglinger +++ Wine in the Word: https://www.randyfrazee.com/wine-in-the-word Learn more about Randy: https://www.randyfrazee.com/ Randy's Books: https://www.randyfrazee.com/books Westside Family Church: https://www.westsidefamily.church/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RandyeFrazee Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/randyfrazee LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/randy-frazee-43bb1545/ Learn more about Gisela: https://www.thespiritualityofwine.com/ Gisela's Books and Articles: https://www.thespiritualityofwine.com/publications Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gisela.kreglinger Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/giselakreglinger/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gisela-h-kreglinger-615a2910/ Connect with me: http://www.stillbeingmolly.com http://instagram.com/stillbeingmolly http://instagram.com/canilaughpod http://twitter.com/stillbeingmolly http://facebook.com/stillbeingmolly http://facebook.com/canilaughpod http://tiktok.com/@stillbeingmolly GET YOUR COPY of ‘IF I DON'T LAUGH, I'LL CRY” TODAY: Barnes & Noble: https://bit.ly/IIDLICbn Amazon: https://amzn.to/48VYFkG ChristianBook: https://bit.ly/IIDLICcb Target: https://bit.ly/3Shh3Q2 Walmart: https://bit.ly/3MmGVpJ Indie Bound: https://bit.ly/IIDLICib Audible: https://amzn.to/3ITcdm8 Kindle: https://amzn.to/3ITaSvv About Can I Laugh On Your Shoulder? Wine is the most talked about food in the Bible. And yet the church in North America has neglected this important biblical theme and precious, tangible gift. Our difficult history with alcohol, especially distilled spirits, led to the prohibition, and its effects can still be felt today. Wine, like other gifts from God, can be abused. Warnings and boundaries are discussed in this series, just as they are presented in the Bible, but the series concentrates on the beauty of wine and explores how the Bible presents this gift for our flourishing. Master Brewer Hagen Dost delves into Dovetail Brewery's traditional brewing techniques, from open fermentation to coolships. Hagen starts by sharing his journey of getting into brewing, with an emphasis on his German heritage growing up and the sensory class that helped him develop skills that he feels would benefit any brewer. He then explains how he became a Certified Master Brewer and discusses traditional European brewing methods, including decoction and the use of a coolship. Plus: the art of identifying fermentation flaws, the science behind crafting classic European beer styles, the significance of the German beer purity law, and the shelf life you can typically expect from beer you buy at your local craft brewery. After the beer break, Haagen discusses their Wet-Hopped Hopfenlager, a lager brewed with freshly picked hops from Michigan, characterized by subtle hop flavors and a lack of bitterness. He also explains what a coolship does and why it's so rare, why some brewers prefer to serve full pours over flights, and the history of the lauter grant faucets behind Dovetail's bar. Plus: what piece of equipment is Dovetail actively using that used to belong to the oldest brewery in the world (and how did they acquire it)? Click hereGrief without words Theatermaker Kurt Engh saw The Moving Company's performance of “SPEECHLESS” in 2017, and he's thrilled the show is back again. The show opens Friday and runs through Nov. 10 at the Jungle Theater in Minneapolis. As the name implies, the play is entirely without words, but the emotions run deep. Kurt explains: Someone passes away in the play, and that person is ironically or symbolically named Hope. I think it's intentionally left to be ambiguous. The play is about five people going through grief in this very melodramatic but real way, and they find that the only way forward is to support themselves, but also support each other. The play shows how people are able to support each other when they don't even know what to say, when they're so upset and they're so at a loss, truly, that they move forward through physical kindness to each other. The collaborators of this production have been working together for many years. They are my favorite theater company in the Twin Cities, and this was voted as a best play of the year in 2017 by the Star Tribune. There are performances on Wednesdays that are pay-as-you-are starting at $15.— Kurt EnghA smorgasbord of short films — or hot dish, if you will Rachel Coyne of Lindstrom is looking forward to seeing the Franconia 5 Minute Film Fest, a short film festival featuring works from Minnesota and Wisconsin artists. The top 15 judge-selected films will be screened at Franconia Sculpture Park this Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. and at the Trylon Cinema in Minneapolis Thursday, Oct 10. The Franconia screening is free with a suggested $10 donation. Seating on benches is limited, so Rachel recommends bringing a blanket or lawn chairs. Rachel adds: There's a claymation artist, some live film, some animation. In the years in the past, when I've gone, you know, it's kind of like eating like a really pungent spice. You're just like, wow, that's an idea, and it hits you over the head, and then before you know it, you're onto the next film.Given that the filmmakers are all from Minnesota and Wisconsin, Rachel adjusts her metaphor: It's more hot dish. So there's peas, there's carrots, there's tater tots and there's probably even some mushroom soup in there. — Rachel CoyneDid you hear that classic Irish epic about the cow? Anna Maher is a classically trained singer and actor living in the Twin Cities, and she's glad that one of her favorite theater companies, Clevername Theatre, is remounting a fan-favorite from the 2022 Minnesota Fringe Festival. “Connor's gonna tell: The Tain Bo Cuailnge” is a one-person recounting of the “Táin Bó Cúailnge,” an old Irish epic tale about a cattle raid. See it at Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater in Minneapolis, Fridays, Oct. 4 and Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m. Anna says: It's kind of like the Irish Odyssey. It's an epic, and it chronicles a war that was waged between two factions, and then there's a hero. And the whole thing, the whole fight, revolves around a cow. And so, Connor will tell the story. He uses different voices. There are some different outfits that happen. There's a mask, there's a little bit of puppetry involved. And then he has a mandolin player who accompanies him for the entire show.” (Note: Anna Maher works for American Public Media Group, the parent company of MPR News.)— Anna Maher

Shakespeare in the sculpture park Rachel Coyne of Lindstrom is looking forward to heading to nearby Franconia Sculpture Park on July 27 to see Shakespeare in the park. Classical Actors Ensemble will perform Shakespeare's mistaken-identity comedy “Twelfth Night, or What You Will,” The show is free. Picnics are encouraged, as are patrons of all ages. This week's performances include Friday at Newell Park in St. Paul, Saturday at Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis and Sunday at Vermillion Falls Park in Hastings. All shows start at 7 p.m. and run for two hours. “Twelfth Night” runs at various Twin Cities parks through July 14. The Franconia Sculpture Park is a particularly special location, Rachel says, because the actors move around the sculpture park and incorporate some of the art into their performance. She still remembers the group's performance of “The Tempest” last year, which staged the show's happy ending with Franconia's giant ring sculpture in the background, forming a literal full circle for the story. She looks forward to seeing which sculptures the performers play around — and on — this year. Pro tip from Rachel: Bring a picnic, and don't forget your bug spray. — Rachel Coyne Romeo and Juliet with Latin flair Claudia V. Garcia, who describes herself as a “paralegal by day, actor/singer/artist by soul,” loved Teatro del Pueblo's adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet,” entitled “Love in a Time of Hate.” Developed in association with the Bach Society of Minnesota, the show's run continues tonight through June 30 at Luminary Arts Center in Minneapolis. Claudia says: I laughed, cheered, got butterflies cried and was very proud, mucho orgullo, to see our raza represented in such a beautiful production. The cast is excellent, represented by a plethora of talented local Latinx artists and people of color in the Twin Cities. You hear hip hop, spoken word, little bit of bilingual Spanglish. A lot of connections to modernity. And that really resonated with younger crowds, bringing “Romeo and Juliet” into the now.— Claudia V. Avery has been very connected to that specific location in their own life and got the opportunity to research and be at that site over many months, creating an immersive story experience to connect with the land. There are two upcoming events this summer. On July 27, there will be a free, family-friendly community concert featuring the musicians Crystal Myslajek and Peter Morrow, who contributed to “The Seeker” soundtrack. The concert is 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. On Aug. 18, Diver will conduct a free creative writing workshop at the Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center. Registration required. “The Seeker” is available through October. Crystal says: This story really brings you through Diver's very gorgeous and poetic words through the headphones that you are wearing — which can either be your own or Sugarloaf Cove Visitor Center does have headphones to borrow. Their voice is leading you through spaces and places that very much have to do with where you are but then also is grounded in themes of love and connection. And it's all supported by this gorgeous original music.— Crystal Brinkman

https://slasrpodcast.com/ SLASRPodcast@gmail.com This week, we bring you a fun story of two hikers - Jessica and Fran who experienced trouble on Franconia Ridge - this one is from the perspective that we don't often think about when talk about hiking - the once a year hiker going out for a fun day of nature mostly unaware of how best to prepare for a challenging day in the mountains. This story turns out okay but it is a lesson in how small decisions can build up and create the potential for big problems. Plus we have an angry mother nature - road closures, washouts, raging rivers, and major flooding across New Hampshire and Maine - the great flood of 2023 this week has wreaked havoc in the Whites and beyond. I think most of you would think that if I gave you 2300 shareholders that would invest 2.2 million dollars in your brewery that you could make it work. If I said you could secure another 400 grand from a state loan and 600K the SBA that your 3.2 million dollars would give your brewery a runway to space travel. And if I said you could go back in time to when there were only a few hundred US microbreweries you'd think I was crazy. Remember that with inflation, that's like having 10 million dollars cash and you could still be the 3rd or 4th brewery in your state. Well, back in the 90's, Guy Hagner raised that money and Guy Wagner built that brewery. He opened with a world-class facility, a licensing deal for one of the best pilsners in the world and he closed 7 months later. He's never spoken publicly about the story of Franconia Brewing until now. The is a special interview that draws similarities to the current market and, if you're paying attention, the business model of craft beer overall. And with that, I'll get out of the way and let Guy share his story. This week we cover the unsung red of Central European wine – Blaufränkisch. This Central European red grape was planted widely in throughout the Habsburg Empire, and today the biggest plantings aren't too far from its birthplace – right on the Austria-Hungary border. Photo: Blaufränkisch. Credit: Austrian Wine Blaufränkisch translates to ‘blue wine of the Franks', and it is known as Lemberger in Germany and the US, Kékrankos in Hungary, Franconia in Italy, and various Burgundy-related names elsewhere in Central Europe. We discuss the origins of all these names, how the grape performs in the vineyard, its flavors, food pairings, and more. Whether it's from Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Finger Lakes of New York, Washington State, Italy or Spain, this grape is versatile, multifacted and a perfect medium bodied red that's perfect for many foods and all sorts of weather -- it can be chilled in the summer in one version and warm your bones by a fire in another. *Note, we mentioned the Austrian anti-freeze scandal. Kyle Bernier is a Minneapolis-based art therapist and author of “Lazy Creativity: The Art of Owning Your Creativity.” He wanted to introduce Art Hounds audiences to the work of Susanna Gaunt, whose work can be seen through Sept. 5 at the Merrill Lynch Fine Arts Gallery of the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth. “Susanna is a Duluth-based artist who's been working at the GLA for a year now on the Great Lakes Almanac,” Bernier said. “Susanna has been gathering stories from the community about their engagement with natural history, whether at the aquarium or just out in nature in general. Susanna has taken the survey and created artwork from those stories that she's now put up on display.” Gaunt's work can also be seen online. Heather Beal of Minneapolis is a journalist who writes about the arts and all aspects of the built and natural environments. She recently heard about an art event that she says “sounds very cool.” The event is Midsummer: a Summer Solstice Festival, taking place Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight at Franconia Sculpture Park in Shafer, Minn. “I've always enjoyed touring Franconia's grounds because of the wonderful way that more than 100 sculptures by contemporary artists are woven into the landscape,” Beal said. “There is always something new to see and experience. This is why I'm especially looking forward to the Franconia Summer Solstice Festival. It offers opportunities to interact with the work of 10 local artists, including several whose work is in progress or has recently been installed at the park.” Activities include contributing to a prayer flag installation, making Solstice suncatchers and creating crowns from native flowers, as well as taking part in a maple dance, pine tree derby and a lantern-lit procession. There will also be a sunset observation and a bonfire. At 10 p.m., the Minnesota Astronomical Society will provide telescopes that visitors can use to view the night sky. Laurel Podulke-Smith of Rochester, Minn., is a performing arts enthusiast. She recommends a new production of “A Raisin in the Sun” at the Rochester Repertory Theater. “The Rochester Repertory Theater is unique among community theaters because it's entirely volunteer-staffed,” she says. “I'm excited about this production. Because, first of all, it's a fantastic play, a fantastically dramatic play. It has an almost all-Black cast and it's co-directed by two Black directors, E.G. Bailey and Shá Cage.” The play runs through June 25.

Dan and Tom Tom Eliott, wine merchant and founder of Northwest Wines, joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country. Dan Berger has brought his house white wine for the moment. It comes from Claire Valley, just north of Adelaide in Australia. The brand is JB, Jim Berry Wines. It sells for $11.99 at Bottle Barn. It's called Jim Berry W Riesling. Dan has brought this wine to compare it to Tom Eliott's wines. Tom brings wines in from three regions which are all cool climates. Tom started Northwest Wines in 1985 in Calistoga. Back in 1979 he had a red burgundy which he describes as his first Nirvana moment. “It was transcendental, I had never had a wine like that before.” In 1980 he was a wine buyer at Café Lido in North Beach and he tasted a lot of wine there. André Tchelistcheff used to come in to buy wine in All Seasons market in Calistoga, where he was the buyer. He was a pioneer in bringing the cool climate wines that emphasize acidity and longevity. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. In the 80s and 90s he found other similar cool climate wines and built his business on cool climate wines from Oregon, Washington and Germany. When Tom got into the business, there was nobody distributing these wines. The problem was that these wines needed explanation. Dan Berger has known Tom Eliott for close to 40 years. Silvaner in a Bocksbeutel Silvaner in a Bocksbeutel The Silvaner comes in the Bocksbeutel-style bottle. It's a traditional bottle for German wines, and is known in the US as the old Mateus Rosé bottle. German wine country mostly the south west but this Silvaner comes from Franconia, in central Germany. The bottle shape is protected for that region. The best Silvaners in the world are grown here, although it is grown in many countries around Europe. The next tasting is a 2020 Chardonnay, from Cooper Mountain in Willamette Valley. Dan describes it as very delicate and needs some more time in the bottle. It's a wine oriented toward food. It comes from a second-generation family owned vineyard. They were the first winery to be certified organic by Oregon Tilth in 1995, and the first certified biodynamic by Demeter in 1999. Half stainless steel, half neutral oak aged, no yeast added, unfiltered. Dan would decant it and not drink it too chilled. Moving along, they taste the Washington Rosé, Gramercy Cellars 2022 vintage. “Amazing,” says Dan. It's all from a single vineyard in Columbia Valley. They farm the coolest blocks for Rosé, with more shading and a lower brix, so it comes out 13% alcohol. The blend is 50% Cinsault, 25% Grenache and 25% Syrah. Oregon Pinot Noir The final tasting is an Oregon Pinot Noir, Elk Cove 2021 from Willamette Valley. Dan says it has a little bit of black cherry, but not only that. It also has vibrancy. It was planted in 1973 and since then the son and daughter of the original owners are running the winery. They have added vineyards and got certified sustainable. The nose is bright and vibrant.

Wolfgang Männel, Blockchain Investor The Investor Wolfgang Männel (https://www.linkedin.com/in/wolfgang-maennel/) has been working for 30+ years. He was born and raised in Franconia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franconia), close to Nürnberg in Germany. Wolfgang started out in sales, started an agency and joined a consultancy (today Capgemini Invent). Surprisingly he had also a stint at a radio station, focused on classical music called Klassik Radio (https://www.klassikradio.de/). Klassik Radio is also the only public listed radio station in Germany. In between he was also an investor with 3i Group, at the time active in venture capital and private equity. He has also been an investor in turn-around cases during the subprime crisis. If you have seen many crises before, you know how to react. I remember the 1987 Russian crisis, the Dotcom Crash, and more. … It was always followed by a long phase where it as difficult for startups to get any kind of financing. It took years to recover … but the only way after all the crisis was up. The valuations always went up after the recovery Wolfgang Männel, Blockchain Investor He is the co-founder (senior partner) of Blockchain Founders Group BFG, a company builder and venture capital investor.
