For many decades the NSW Riverina has produced an endless list of outstanding trainers and jockeys. One of the latest recruits to hit the headlines on the big stage is young jockey Tyler Schiller who reeled off a couple of Gr 1 wins during the recent Championships. One man to leave his mark as a jockey and trainer is Dave Heywood who retired in 2020 after six decades in the racing industry. As a jockey he rode exclusively in the Riverina and Victoria. Surprisingly he never once got to ride on a Sydney track but he trained numerous winners in the harbour city. Dave Heywood earned the respect of all sections of the industry during 12 years in the saddle and another 48 years as a trainer. The rising 80 year old is in reminiscent mood as he joins us on the podcast. Dave says he's blessed with good health. Right off the top he answers the commonly asked question about his relationship if any to ace jockey Nick Heywood. Dave says his primary sporting interests these days revolve around the dart board and the pool room. Few realise Dave was Victorian born. He explains how the family got to settle in the Riverina. The veteran horseman remembers riding trackwork at age 11 for legendary trainer Bert Honeychurch who became his master. Dave hasn't forgotten his very first day as a professional jockey. He greeted the judge twice. He talks about the horses involved. He still remembers the thrill of riding a winner first up on the historic Flemington course. Dave looks back on the transfer of his indentures to top Melbourne trainer Brian Courtney. He realises how lucky he was to pick up a ride in the Melbourne Cup at just 15 years of age. He talks of the horse he rode for an iconic trainer and takes us through the running of the Centenary Melbourne Cup of 1960. One of the runners was Dave's favourite horse. He looks back on his association with the man who took Phar Lap to America in 1932. Dave got to ride the talented Webster in an unsuitable race at Werribee. Although unplaced he still regards the horse as the best he ever rode in a race. He acknowledges several other talented horses he got to ride during his time in Melbourne. One of them was owned by a Hollywood movie legend. Dave was back in the Riverina in 1969. His weight was on the rise but he managed to ride for another few years with great success. He's especially proud of a winning sequence over two days at Benalla. He explains that he was actually talked into applying for a trainer's licence. Dave looks back on his “Indies trilogy”- Prince Of Indies, Pride Of Indies and King Of Indies, three talented horses who won more than 60 races between them. He pays tribute to his late brother-in-law Russ Milne who owned the Indies trio. He also loved a punt whenever his horses were racing. Dave is adamant the unsound Shadameneo was the best horse he trained. The former outstanding horseman pays tribute to the indestructible Green Ridge, veteran of 200 race starts. He looks back on prolific winners like Vain Alert, Hillston Exchange, Man Of Peace and Living On A Prayer. This is a long overdue chat with a great competitor and a gentleman of Riverina racing.

In this episode, we explore the connections between 1 Kings 8:1–13 and Ephesians 2:17–22, tracing the story of God's dwelling place from Solomon's temple to the household of God built on Christ, and the apostles and prophets. We begin by reflecting on Solomon as a man of peace who, at the height of Israel's unity and prosperity, brings the ark of the covenant into the Holy of Holies during the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot). We unpack the significance of this moment—not only as the culmination of temple-building, but also as a symbolic statement about God's presence: God is stationary enough to dwell among His people, yet larger and mobile enough not to be confined by them. The mobile nature of God's presence was symblized by the poles used to transport the ark remaining attched to the ark, reminding Israel that God is not a localized deity limitd to the Temple, but the Lord of all the earth. From there, we turn to Ephesians 2:17–22, where Paul describes Jesus as the cornerstone of a new temple made up of people—both Jews and Gentiles—joined together through their participation in the new, unified, peaceful humanity of Christ. Like Solomon, Jesus partners with God to build a dwelling place for God from a place of peace and oneness. However, unlike Solomon, Christ did not inherit a situation of peace from his father. He had to forge it within himself - in his own flesh - reconciling his Jewishness with Gentileness. That reconciliation took place throughout the entire course of his life, all the way into the the excruciating experience of the cross where his love and commitment for Gentiles was severely tested. By reconciling Jew and Gentile together in his own flesh and humanity, he was able to reconcile them both to God in his own fleshly body on the cross. This made it possible for Jews and Gentiles who participate in his new humanity to be one "body", and function together as a dwelling place for God - a temple in the Lord - in the Spirit. Just as the glory of the Lord filled Solomon's temple, the Spirit now indwells this new temple, a mobile, missional people shaped by God's own presence. This episode invites listeners to consider how God's desire was never just to dwell among Israel, but to make His presence among Israel accessible among the nations. The mobile nature of God's presence—tabernacling with humanity, dwelling in Christ, and now among His people—is a thread that ties Solomon's temple to the apostolic mission of the Church. The temple was never meant to be an end in and of itself - it was pointing to something greater.Key Passages:1 Kings 8:1-13Ephesians 2:17-22Key Resources:Link to visuals and video of the design of Solomon's TempleExplainer Video on how to use www.biblehub.com and www.blueletterbible.orgLeave us a question or comment at our website podcast page.* Intro Music: "Admirable" Carlos Herrera Music

In this episode, we continue to explore the connection between King Solomon—whose name means "peace" and whose reign was marked by the absence of war (1 Kings 5:1–12)—and Jesus Christ, who is declared in Ephesians 2:14–16 to be our peace. But this passage in Ephesians is not just about the absence of external conflict; it's about the internal transformation that had to occur first in Jesus himself, and then in us.We dig into the developmental process that Jesus, as a Jewish man in relatio to Gentile people, underwent in order to become the source of peace. Ephesians gives us a rare glimpse into the spiritual and psychological work that took place in the flesh of Christ—where hostility towards people who were different and hostile towards him was ultimately put to death at the cross. This is especially shocking when we realize that Jesus, as a Jew, had to confront and overcome any and all fleshly, hostile impulses toward Gentiles - even toward the Gentiles who ultimately crucified him.Through this lens, the cross becomes not only the place where Christ died for us, but also the place where the hostility in Christ's flesh died, too. The cross was like a circumcision that finally cut away all hostility from the flesh of Jesus, fully deactivating it, and putting it to tdeath, making possible the creation and completion of a new humanity—one that was created in peace and oneness. We conclude by considering what it means for the same work that was accomplished in Jesus' flesh to now be accomplished in our flesh. The church is not simply called to believe this peace and oneness was developed in Christ, but to participate in it and embody it—a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, unified people whose peace flows not from mere tolerance or diplomacy, but from the very crucified flesh of Christ.Key Passages:1 Kings 5:1-12Ephesians 2:14-16Explainer Video on how to use www.biblehub.com and www.blueletterbible.orgLeave us a question or comment at our website podcast page.* Intro Music: "Admirable" Carlos Herrera Music

LISTENER WARNING: There is a clip of more graphic explanation of circumcision so you may not want to listen in with your children. In this episode, we explore the unique way King Solomon is portrayed in 1 Kings 5:1–12 as a man of peace—not merely in terms of foreign diplomacy, but as someone internally at rest, in contrast to his father David, who is remembered as a man of war. While Solomon's peaceful reign provided practical stability—no enemies, no major conflicts— that enabled to engage in a seven year long building project, it also reflected an inner disposition of peace and harmony that made him a fitting candidate to build the temple of the Lord. But the story of Solomon initiating the bulding of the Temple is not without its warnings. We trace a subtle “breadcrumb” of Solomon's future fall—his reliance on Hiram, king of Tyre, for skilled labor. This decision marks a quiet departure from the Spirit-empowered craftsmanship that characterized the building of the Tabernacle in the wilderness. Was Israel lacking in ability—or was Solomon leaning more on foreign alliances than on God?Even so, Solomon's collaboration with Hiram also prefigures something hopeful: Israel's fruitfulness blessing the nations, reminiscent of Joseph's provisional leadership through Egypt during a worldwide famine. This theme of peace, provision, and temple-building finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, whom Ephesians 2 proclaims as our peace. Join us as we uncover how Solomon's reign and temple project offer a glimpse—both hopeful and cautionary—of the greater peace and and dwelling place of God that Christ would build.Key Passages:1 Kings 5:1-121 Chronicles 22:1-5 David demonstrates that there are skilled workers available in Israel1 Chronicles 22:6-8; 28:2-3 - David was characterized as a man of war, implying it was not just the existence of external enemies and conflicts that hindered him from being the builder of the temple. “Don't assume that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword” -Jesus. (Matthew 10:34) Wait…what? I thought Jesus was the Prince of Peace, but these words of Jesus seem to say something totally different. What do we do with this? In part 3 of our Christmas series, Prince of Peace, Pastor Steve unpacks this provocative teaching of Jesus from Matthew 10,  helping us understand how the Gospel of Jesus impacted the world in which Jesus was living…and the world in which we live today. If you are ready to dig into the tensions of the Gospel and the potential tensions in your own life, then listen to this message and be convicted and inspired to be a person of peace!   //The Gospel of Jesus results in reconciliation and should be reflected in the way that WE bring peace to this world. //   Bible References: Luke 2:8-14 Luke 1:78 Isaiah 9:6-7 Matthew 10:5-34 Luke 12:51-53 Luke 22:47-50 Colossians 4:6 John 3:17 Romans 12:17-18 -  NEXT STEPS  Looking to take your next step?  We want to help! In this message celebrating the full moon day of celebration of the birth, enlightenment and passing of the historical Buddha, Professor Thurman gives an extended teaching on how Saka Dawa is celebrated by Tibetans across the world. Saka Dawa, named for the star, Vishakha, prominent during the fourth month in the Tibetan lunar calendar, is almost the same as the Theravadin observance of Vesak. It is considered the most sacred month for remembering the great achievement of Shakyamuni Buddha in the 6th BCE century (earlier in the Tibetan calendar). H. H. the Dalai Lama and all Tibetan Buddhist monks and laity celebrate this holiday. In this Podcast Robert A.F. Thurman gives an overview of the Buddhist holiday, a detailed accounting of the details of the Buddha’s Enlightenment as revealed by Indian Buddhist Sanskrit literature and Tibet’s yogic tradition. Podcast includes: an introduction to the four major schools of Buddhism found in China, details on the practice of vegetarianism during Buddhist Holidays, the symbolism behind the Buddha’s “Earth Witness” mudra made upon being challenged by Mara the Evil One, just before Siddhartha attained unexcelled enlightenment; and how traditional Chinese people were quite tolerant of diversity in religion and ideology, as “Confucians in office, Taoist for weddings, birth ceremonies, and in retirement, and Buddhist for funerals, meditations, and scientific philosophies.” Includes a teaching on the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths and mentions Professor Thurman’s Four Nobler Truths, based on the White Lotus and Great Total Nirvana Sutras. In this podcast Professor Thurman discusses how Buddha Nature can be understood as being a form of Loving Activism found through the realization of Emptiness. Includes a reading from the introduction to the AIBS Publication “Sublime Continuum Treatise Commentary” by Bo Jiang. Emptiness, or selflessness, is a foundation in all forms of Buddhist thought & education. In contemporary scholarship, its critical, negational impact is widely misunderstood as a form of nihilism. Revealing the radically life affirming call to action to all sensitive beings found in the Buddha’s teachings through the recent works by the Wachowski sisters (The Sense8 Netflix Television Series & The Cloud Atlas) Professor Thurman unpacks the Buddhist Centrist notion of Buddha Nature in humorous language even today’s binge watching seekers can understand. © Image by Just1of7billion via Flickr. In this podcast Robert AF Thurman discusses the history of the Tibet House US publication graphic novel “Man of Peace” and his long time personal relationship with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. After more than a decade in the works Professor Thurman discusses the ‘Man of Peace: Illustrated Life of the Dalai Lama’ Graphic Novel publication + provides an introduction to the history of Tibet, Buddhism & the 14th Dalai Lama. “Why the “life story” of the Dalai Lama? It is a story of one man taking on an empire, calling for truth, peace, and justice for his Tibetan people. Here, in full color for the first time, people can come to know the whole drama of his lifelong struggle. Since the age of 15, the Dalai Lama has defended his people against one of the last great empires, the People’s Republic of China. Under its “dictatorship of the proletariat,” China began to invade Tibet in 1950, decimating and then continually oppressing its people. Since colonialism cannot be practiced in our era of self-determined nations, China always maintains that the Tibetans are a type of Chinese, using propaganda and military power to crush Tibet’s unique culture and identity. Yet the Dalai Lama resists by using only the weapon of truth—along with resolute nonviolence—even worrying some of his own people by seeking dialogue and reconciliation based on his more realistic vision. The great 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet has become the first global Dalai Lama, a prominent transnational leader of all who want to make the dramatic changes actually necessary for life on earth to thrive for centuries to come. Considered the incarnation of the Buddhist savior Chenrezig or Avalokiteshvara—archangel of universal compassion—he is believed to appear in many forms, at many different times, whenever and wherever beings suffer. Representing the plight of his beloved Tibetan people to the world, he has also engaged with all people who suffer oppression and injustice, as recognized in 1989 by his being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Most importantly, the Dalai Lama walks his talk throughout these pages, as he has throughout his life, and he radiates a powerful hope that we can and will prevail. Man of Peace presents the inside story of his amazing life and vision, in the high tension of the military occupation of Tibet and the ongoing genocide of its people—a moving work of political and historical nonfiction brought to life in the graphic novel form—here for all to see.” From Man Of Peace: The Illustrated Life Story of Tibet’s Dalai Lama To learn more about + get your copy of the ‘Man of Peace’ Graphic novel please visit: www.tibethouse.us. Mr. Mandela was a freedom fighter of the highest order, he and the African National Congress were not only considered terrorist for fighting for what they were birthed with by our creator, which is a free will, but he was also imprisoned for 27 years at Robben Island.  Through it all, Mr. Mandela commanded respect and received it, always knowing and having the confidence that one day he and others would be freed from the physical prison. His prison to presidency marks an epic turning point in the annals of world history and with his recent passing. Paul Lawrence Vann help listeners better understand how we can make a difference in the lives of others, just as Mr. Mandela did. We have gleaned news reports from the media and quotes from the bible for your opportunity to examine events as you may consider the content. The books of Daniel and Revelation are mysteriouslyconnected, it would seem that the writers of both did not understand the information they reported, we may be aligned with them.
