In this week's episode, both of our storytellers bite off a bit more than they can chew. Part 1: Fresh out of college and in what seems like her dream job, drug and alcohol coach Rhana Hashemi quickly realizes she has no idea how to connect with the high school students she's supposed to help. Part 2: When Paul Davis and his wife struggle to get pregnant, they decide to foster a pregnant dog—and things escalate quickly.Rhana Hashemi is a Bay Area–based drug educator, national expert in youth overdose prevention, and Ph.D. candidate in Social Psychology at Stanford University. Her research adapts Lifting the Bar for youth who use substances. This intervention, called More Than That, elevates youth voices to show educators that a student is "more than" their substance use. By reducing stigma and strengthening student–teacher relationships, she demonstrates how seeing and empowering students can protect against risky drug use. Rhana is also the founder and Executive Director of Know Drugs, the first youth-focused harm reduction organization in the United States, which advances evidence-based drug education for young people. Bridging social psychology with community partnerships, she works to reduce drug misuse and promote more compassionate, effective responses to youth substance use.Paul Davis writes and directs horror movies. His last short won Screamfest and Ravenheart, two of the biggest horror film festivals in the U.S. and Europe. He is currently raising funds to expand it into a feature. Paul is passionate about storytelling. He has had stories air on NPR and published in Reader's Digest. He is also working on a solo-storytelling show. PUBLIC VERSION. Director Travis Greene and writer Jonathan Buchanan (8 FOUND DEAD- currently available to rent or purchase digitally) join Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss the making of their award winning new feature. From the writing of 8 FOUND DEAD's non-linear story and pushing back on the note to “unfold it” and tell the story in a more traditional order of events… to Travis risking it all by selling his house to finance the production and then finding himself renting a place that just so happened to be the perfect location to shoot the film… to the import role that Priscilla's Gourmet Coffee Shop and their legendary Raspberry Mocha played in helping the film come to life… to blocking and staging a story in four separate but converging timelines… to how Jonathan's years as a prop master and Travis' years as an editor prepared them for producing their very own feature without getting caught up in the usual first-time producer pitfalls… to knowing when and when not to listen to test audiences' opinions of early cuts even when they are filled with trusted friends… to going on to win “Best Feature” and “Best Director” at the 2022 ScreamFest in Los Angeles… we hope that this incredibly inspiring conversation helps push you to stop waiting for someone else's permission and start making your dream a reality! Remember, ”if not now WHEN?” Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a listener who is about to move to the United States and who is looking for some tips about attending her very first horror convention, Adam has some advice for grumpy convention celebrities, and the boys joke about what a big success YORKIETHON 8 will be… several weeks before finding out just how successful it actually was! But more on that next week in our special Christmas episode!

I watched this film as part of Screamfest and after leaving a review on my Instagram story, Matthew reached out to me and then we scheduled a time to record over his film and one other. The film also stars DeAnna S. Wright, it was directed by Matthew's brother, Will Kresch, who also co-wrote the film with A. V. Bach. Hopefully ou will be able to stream it somewhere soon. According to IMDb, Alone Together (Horror/Thriller) is about Nassdja, a woman trapped in a toxic relationship, is locked down during a pandemic with her brutish boyfriend Luke. With the hope of healing their relationship, they flee to Luke's remote family cabin but soon find they are not alone. Alone Together Cocktail: Ingredients 2 ounces vodka Red Bull, to top Directions Add vodka to a highball glass with ice. Fill with Red Bull and stir. Drinking Game: Drink when... they say Wi-Fi. there's a gun on screen. Finish your drink when... you hear the clicker. As always, drink responsibly and with friends. Share the podcast with others. I watched this film, based on a novel by Victor Pelevin, as part of this years Screamfest. It is not your typical vampire film in any way, more of a romance story, but very interesting. I found out in the interview that Sharon Stone was originally going to be in it, how crazy is that. The film is about a 19-year-old nobody receives an invitation to join an elite and powerful society of vampires in Moscow. Empire V Cocktail: Victor suggested a bloody mary but with red absinthe and spices, or moonshine. The moonshine would probably taste better and is easier to obtain, I've only seen red absinthe in Europe. Drinking Game: According to Victor, there are no rules, so drink when you decide to. Here is another wonderful bonus episode for you to enjoy. I was able to watch What You Wish For as part of Screamfest and then I got the privilege of interviewing the writer and director Nick Tomnay (The Perfect Host). This was a great horror/thriller, so keep an eye out for when it's released for you to stream. A down-on-his-luck chef with gambling problems flees to a Latin American villa, where he assumes the identity of another man. The film stars Nick Stahl (Sin City, Tiny Beautiful Things), Tamsin Topolski (Penny Dreadful), Randy Vasquez, Penelope Mitchell, Juan Carlos Messier, Brian Groh, Greg Winter and more. Red Wine will be the themed beverage for What You Wish For, so grab your favorite bottle, or two, of red wine. Drinking Rules Drink when... Ryan (Nick Stahl) looks freaked out. Before you listen to this episode, go watch the film. You can buy or rent it from your favorite streaming platform, but I would recommend buying it over renting. I was able to watch KillHer last year as part of Screamfest and it was one of my favorites that I watched. It finally worked out to have an interview and it was a lot of fun talking to Tom, Robyn, and Rick. Tom wrote, produced, and starred in the film, Robyn directed the film, and Rick was the production designer. According to IMDb (which there is a rating of 8.9 for the film), the synopsis for Killher is Mattie and her friends go on a weekend trip to the woods to plan Mattie's wedding, settled near the camp of Mr. Rogers, and with no phone signal, their trip starts to turn into a bad idea when they start dying and a secret is revealed. Themed Cocktails: Rick's Cocktail: Scout's Honor from Bigfoot Lodge Ingredients 1 fluid ounce vodka 1 fluid ounce creme de cocao 1 fluid ounce creme de menthe 1 fluid ounce Irish cream liqueur 1 mint leaf Directions Pour the vodka, creme de cocao liqueur, creme de menthe, and Irish cream into a cocktail shaker over ice. Cover, and shake until the outside of the shaker has frosted. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a mint leaf to serve. Tom's Cocktail: A Bloody Mary Ingredients 1 teaspoon sea salt, or as needed ice cubes, as needed ¾ cup spicy tomato-vegetable juice cocktail 1.5 ounce vodka 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce 1 dash Tabasco salt and ground black pepper to taste 1 stalk celery 2 garlic-stuffed green olives, threaded onto a toothpick 1 pickle Directions Gather all ingredients. Pour salt onto a small plate. Moisten the rim of a glass and press into the salt. Fill the glass with ice cubes. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes; add vegetable juice cocktail, vodka, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce, salt, and pepper. Cover and shake until the outside of shaker has frosted, about 20 seconds. Strain Bloody Mary into the prepared glass. Garnish with celery stalk and olives. Throw in the pickle for the surprise. Robyn's Drink: Snake Bite Ingredients Lager or Stout Cider Directions Fill a chilled beer glass halfway full with cider. Top the cider with choice of beer—preferably lager or stout—and serve. KillHer Drinking Rules: Robyn's Rules: Drink every time… you laugh as an audience. you hear the word “raccoon”. Jess says she wants to leave. you see a cigarette burn in the upper right corner. you see trees. you see a shot that reminds you of a certain shot in a horror film. you see a knife. you see a mask. you see Jagger's beautiful smile. Tom's Rules: Drink every time… you see a product placement. you see an “Easter Egg”. Rick's Rules: Drink every time… a character appears with a new button from HXB. As always, drink responsibly and with friends. Share the podcast with others. Follow/Subscribe on your favorite streaming platform, leave me a five star review. Hayride to Hell is about how a small town farmer exacts his bloody revenge on unscrupulous town folk who try to steal his land. It's director by Dan Lantz, who I got to interview, written by Kristina Chadwick and Robert Lange, and stars Bill Moseley (The Devil's Rejects, House of 1000 Corpses), Kane Hodder (Jason Vorhees himself from many Friday the 13th films and Victor Crowley from the Hatchet franchise), and Graham Wolfe. This is a fun and campy horror film that I really enjoyed as part of Screamfest this year. Please go check it out at your local theater. Hayride to Hell Cocktail: Ingredients 1/2 ounce (or 1 oz if you use syrup) Amaretto 1/2 ounce pumpkin vodka or 1 ounce pumpkin spice syrup 1 shot espresso 4 ounces of steamed milk (or cold milk if you use ice) Directions Combine all ingredients in a coffee mug and top with fresh whipped cream. Sprinkle with pumpkin spice and serve hot or over ice. Hayride to Hell Drinking Game: Drink when... Bud says, "Now that's what I'm talking about." Karen does a "Karenism". Nixler does a goofy look. As always, drink responsibly and with friends. Share the podcast with others. Follow/Subscribe on your favorite streaming platform, leave me a five star review. Video Version : https://youtu.be/uFub_MypGZo This bonus podcast explores the 20th-anniversary celebration of Spooky Empire, a beloved Halloween event in Central Florida. The founder, Petey Mongelli, shares the intriguing origins of Spooky Empire, which emerged from his desire to create a rock 'n roll convention but found inspiration in the growing world of horror, particularly through artists like Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson. Spooky Empire's journey is characterized by its evolution from the early days of Screamfest to the current format with bi-annual editions like Mayhem and Summerween. It has become a hub for those who appreciate the darker and unconventional aspects of pop culture, horror, and rock 'n roll. This family-friendly event even has a dedicated Kid's Zone for young enthusiasts. Over the years, Spooky Empire has enjoyed remarkable success, attracting renowned guests and fostering a close-knit community. The dedicated team, including Petey Mongelli and his wife Gina, work diligently behind the scenes to make it all happen. For the 20th anniversary, expect a grander celebration with new elements like a drag show, additional stages, and larger parties. Spooky Empire also demonstrates its support for the community, promoting inclusivity and providing assistance to vendors during challenging times. The event spans from October 26th to 29th at the Hyatt Regency on I-Drive. Tickets are available for purchase, and VIP passes are in high demand. Stay updated on guest announcements and schedules through their website and social media channels. Spooky Empire offers a one-of-a-kind destination where those who embrace the unique and eerie can come together for an unforgettable weekend of entertainment.

Filmmaker Chris Browne cam into DIF HQ to discuss his award winning short film "Pleroma" and of course I had him answer the 4Qs above while he was here. (Great list, by the way!) You have to wait a little while to see "Pleroma," but if you want to be very cool then you should come its premiere at Screamfest in October of 2023. I'm gonna do my best to be there! In this episode I'm joined by Shannon Brown to discuss Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil! Shannon began her career touring the country doing sketch and improv comedy and now lives in Los Angeles, where she writes and directs horror-comedy shorts. Most recently, her films were screened at Screamfest, Salem Horror Fest, Horrorhound Weekend, and Final Girls Berlin. The two of us chatted about the themes within Tucker and Dale like how you can't judge a book by its cover, how important it is to find a partner that supports your dreams and the ultimate horror of all-- we all become our parents eventually. Shannon's horror-comedy short film, Demon Juice, is now streaming with Screamfest and TromaNow. Her next short, Overnights, will be hitting the festival circuit soon.
