Keeper Of The Greens segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is brought to you by John Deere Golf. When you work where others play, you need a partner you can trust to keep your course in perfect condition. Find your nearest John Deere dealer at deere.com.auJohn Spraggs is a born and bred New Zealander and it gives e great pleasure to have John as my very first New Zealand interview on John Deere Keeper of the Greens.John is Course Manager of Royal Wellington Golf Club in the southern part of New Zealand's North Island. John grew up on the family dairy farm. Although he worked on the farm, it wasn't going to be his long term career. He found an opportunity as an apprentice greenkeeper and took it with both hands. Thoroughly enjoying his time learning the greenkeeping trade, it wasn't long before John knew it was managing a golf course that he really wanted to do. Early in John's career he became Superintendent and it was from here that he started to make his mark on New Zealand's greenkeeping industry. After working at a number of courses as Superintendent John took on the superintendents role at Mount Maunganui Golf Club in Tauranga where the club would host the NZ PGA Championship in 1985 that would be won by Frank Nobilo.Following a number of years at Mount Maunganui Golf Club, John made the move back to Wellington at Hutt Golf Club before he would accept the role leading the team on course at Royal Wellington where he has now been for the past 20 years! This is a wonderful conversation encompassing a long and established greenkeeping career and a number of New Zealand golf courses that I'm sure you will enjoy listening to!You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - InstagramThe Golfing Greenkeeper - FacebookThe Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTubeSend me an email to - thegolfinggreenkeeper@gmail.comPeople and places mentioned in this podcast:Royal Wellington Golf ClubParaparaumu Beach Golf ClubManawatu Golf ClubWanganui Golf ClubPirongia Golf ClubHamilton Golf Club - St Andrews CourseManly Sea Eagles rugby league teamWestown Golf ClubMount Maunganui Golf ClubNZ PGA ChampionshipFrank Nobilo wikiBoulcott's Farm Golf Club (Merged with Hutt GC)Scott Macpherson Golf DesignGreg TurnerCape Kidnappers Golf CourseTe Arai LinksGEO Foundation Sustainable GolfWomen's Amateur Asia Pacific ChampionshipAsia Pacific Amateur ChampionshipAsia Pacific Golf ConfederationUSGA GS3 BallWairakei Golf & SanctuaryKinloch Golf ClubEP.127 Keeper of the Greens - Mark SpraggsEP.135 Steve's Random Special Guest - Mike O'Keeffe

Vital to the running of a golf club, or paralysed decision makers that just get in the way? Do we still need golf club committees and, if so, how could they be improved? Tom Irwin and Steve Carroll have some experience in this field. Both have served on golf club committees and they debate the pros and cons of these institutions. Keeper Of The Greens segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is brought to you by John Deere Golf. When you work where others play, you need a partner you can trust to keep your course in perfect condition. Find your nearest John Deere dealer at deere.com.auScott Armstrong has been around a long time as you'll soon hear. Scott began his greenkeeping career not long out of year 10 at school on Sydney's Northern Beaches in an era when it wasn't unrealistic to wear thongs and no shirt working in the hot summer sun out on course. Yes, this is Australia! Scott had the privilege of learning and working under some of, not only Sydney's, but Australia's leading greenkeeping professionals. After a long start to his career at Manly Golf Club under people such as John Odell, it was soon time to take the reigns for himself and he landed the superintendent's role at Mona Vale Golf Club, still on the Northern Beaches.Scott spent a number of years working on course before things would take a turn through some challenging times with committee members and he decided it was time to move away from Mona Vale and working directly with turf. Scott took on a role as a sales rep for an industry company which he would continue for many years learning lots of different things from "the other side". Eventually falling out of favour with the sales side of the industry Scott gravitated back to working hands on with turf but it was a bumpy ride before an opportunity presented itself to be a greenkeeper at Hamilton Island Golf Club in the Whitsundays of North Queensland. This chat has everything and them some in it. I went to Hamilton Island to sit down with Scott for this chat and he doesn't disappoint. We talk about everything from long lost types of machinery, reminisce about old colleagues and peers, discuss what it means to be a team on course, and then there's the travelling around the world for golf, a brush with Clint Eastwood working at Congressional for the US Open, and of course an insight into Hamilton Island Golf Club and the challenges of the current weather conditions. This is a wild and fun ride so get your six point racing harness on and strap in!You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - InstagramThe Golfing Greenkeeper - FacebookThe Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTubeSend me an email to - thegolfinggreenkeeper@gmail.comPeople and places mentioned in this podcast:Hamilton Island Golf ClubManly Golf ClubMona Vale Golf ClubTerrey Hills Golf and Country ClubSussex Inlet Golf ClubMollymook Golf ClubCongressional Country ClubCypress Point Club - Monterey Peninsula GolfPebble Beach Golf LinksPasatiempo Golf ClubDr. Alister MacKenzie - The Alister MacKenzie SocietyMarion Hollins - Marion Hollins Memorial ProjectSt Andrews LinksRoyal Troon Golf ClubCarnoustie Golf LinksBarnbougleEP.63 Keeper of the Greens - Brad HoleEP.70 Keeper of the Greens - Pat WilsonEP.127 Keeper of the Greens - Mark SpraggsEP.135 Steve's Random Special Guest - Mike O'Keeffe (Ohio State Program)
Alex Trujillo is the Director of Sales and Fitting for JumboMax Grips. Formerly, a PGA TOUR representative for FlightScope Golf, Alex is one of the best golf data analysts and advisors in the game, and he has parlayed his extensive ballistics and golfclub-performance knowledge and experience into the world of grips and their influence on the performance of a golfclub. Alex joins #OntheMark to introduce JumboMax grips and describe the advantages of using a weighted, oversized grip as it pertains to increased clubhead speed and clubface control. He explains the influence and effects of the grips as follows: How shot patterns can be tightened and straightened with different weighting of the grip How counter-balanced grips have been, and are, used but some of the great ball-strikers like Jack Nicklaus, Bryson DeChambeau and Sergio Garcia. The weight and swing-weight of a golfclub and how a grip, and its mass can influence those. The size effect of a grip and how it promotes a better hold on the club, more control of shot patterns by affecting clubface rates of closure, and how is can reduce hand and wrist injury and pain. In this deeply personal tribute episode of Business Coaching Secrets, Karl Bryan and Rode Dog reflect on the legacy and lessons of Adrian Ulsh, Karl's business partner and "big brother" of 17 years, who recently passed away. They discuss the principles, temperament, and business philosophies that defined Adrian's impact on their company, their clients, and the entire coaching industry. Karl shares invaluable insights into the operating system Adrian helped create, actionable strategies for growing and coaching small businesses, and practical approaches to prospecting and retention—all inspired by Adrian's stoic focus and unwavering dedication. Key Topics Covered The Legacy and Principles of Adrian Ulsh Karl Bryan shares heartfelt stories about Adrian Ulsh's influence, describing Adrian as the true "man, myth, legend" and the stabilizing force behind their partnership. Family first: Adrian's definition encompassed team members, clients, and the broader community. Wild loyalty, consistency, and frugality as core values that drove business and personal success. Building and Installing a Business Operating System The "Jumpstart 12" framework: Twelve core areas for incremental business improvement and profit acceleration. How small, strategic changes (2-5% gains in multiple areas) compound to produce powerful growth. The importance of standards over goals and repeating proven stories for impact. Real-World Example: Coaching a Landscaping Business Step-by-step, Karl details how Adrian would apply the Jumpstart 12: controlling costs, defining a market-dominating position, bundling services, creating compelling offers, joint ventures, upselling, and cross-selling. Emphasis on practical, low-friction implementation—no magic pills, expensive hires, or complicated training. The Magic of Incremental and Compounding Growth Why professionals focus on what could go wrong, systematize improvements, and avoid "hopium." Operating by numbers: using math and real metrics, not emotions or wishful thinking, to guide decisions. Client Prospecting and Scripting Mastery Adrian's approach to outreach: short, personalized, authority-driven messages sent consistently. Leveraging connections (Chamber, BNI, local hangouts), offering value, and asking for opinions to initiate real conversations. The importance of sending multiple messages daily, not expecting instant results, and using results—not emotions—as a barometer. Notable Quotes "He didn't have goals. He had standards. Create standards for yourself." — Karl Bryan "You want to build a great company, you want to build a great product—consistency and focus over talent all day long and twice on Sunday." — Karl Bryan "Don't get too up. Don't get too down… Warren Buffett doesn't walk into a boardroom all hopped up on hopium." — Karl Bryan "Send it out 50 times a day. If you want results, don't just do it once." — Karl Bryan (on outreach) Actionable Takeaways Focus on Incremental Improvements: Apply the Jumpstart 12 framework and aim for small (2-5%) gains across multiple business areas to produce exponential results. Systematize Everything: Build clear standards, document your operating process, and repeat proven stories and tactics for better client outcomes. Be Relentlessly Consistent: Don't chase perfection or get lost behind the screen—take steady, focused action daily on outreach and client delivery. Eliminate Distractions: Legendary business success comes from eliminating everything except your one core focus—whether it's live events, lead generation, or client retention. Outreach with Authority and Value: Use short, confident messages that reference known connections or groups. Focus on ideas and feedback to open doors. Let Results Be the Guide: Track progress by cash in the bank, referrals, and new clients—not emotions or subjective feedback. Serve the Fat Middle: Target the mass market of SMB "newbies," not just the 4% of $1M+ businesses, for scalable growth and reduced risk. Resources Mentioned Profit Acceleration Software™ (by Karl Bryan): Core tool to implement the Jumpstart 12 and Deep Dive 40 operating systems, delivering instant value to small business clients. Focus.com: Business coaching platform and software hub. Networking Groups: BNI, local Chambers of Commerce, Yacht Club, Golf Club—where coaches can build authority and prospect for clients. Episode Title: Operation Golf Club Entrapment Pt. 1Episode SummaryAaron and Devin return with updates on their fitness journeys and an unexpected development: Aaron has actually ridden his bike to work twice (before school schedule changes made it impossible). Devin shares his calf injury saga from pushing too hard in marathon training, though he's recovered with just weeks before the big race. Both hosts continue their intermittent fasting journeys with surprising consistency. The episode takes a dramatic turn when Aaron and Brian Duncan execute "Operation Golf Club Entrapment" - leaving a complete set of clubs on Devin's patio while he's away. What follows is a spirited debate about whether Devin should take up golf for business development purposes, complete with counteroffers and negotiations. The conversation shifts to more serious territory as Aaron voices concerns about his son's school requiring iPad use for everything - homework, assignments, announcements - with zero paper alternatives. This sparks a broader discussion about technology addiction, the damage done to the "iPad generation," and whether schools are making things worse by mandating constant screen time while parents try to limit it at home.Episode DescriptionWhen golf clubs appear on your patio and iPads dominate your kid's education.Join Aaron and Devin for an episode covering calf injuries, intermittent fasting wins, and the great golf club ambush of 2025.
