The BBC is undeniably one of Britains greatest cultural institutions, having produced some of the greatest shows and services of all time. However, having experienced extreme funding cuts within the past 10 years and faced with a government who actively want to dismantle it, it is in peril. Many hostile forces have risen against the BBC, with recent calls to #DefundTheBBC and the claims that it is no longer fit for purpose and cannot rival the new subscriptions giants Netflix or Amazon Prime, many people (overwhelmingly from the right) are calling for an end to the license fee and for the BBC to find other funding avenues. Not to mention the huge debate around the supposed impartiality of the BBC, with attacks from the right claiming it is too left-wing, liberal and woke - to some on the left calling it a mouthpiece for the establishment. In today's episode, I am joined by Patrick Barwise, Emeritus Professor in Management and Marketing at London Business School, former chairman of consumer organisation Which? and co-author, alongside Peter York, of the book 'The War Against the BBC'.'The War Against the BBC' looks into many of the threats the BBC is facing, it debunks common myths and attacks against the BBC, the dangers of introducing advertising or a subscription-based service to the BBC and makes the case on so many fronts for why it's so important for us to protect the BBC and the license fee.I spoke to Patrick Barwise earlier this week for a discussion about his book and all of these different aspects!Buy The War Against the BBC by Patrick Barwise and Peter York: https://bit.ly/32X57Iq Guardian article which compiles Dominic Cummings 2004 blog posts: https://bit.ly/2IUfMNeSpeakers:Patrick Barwise - Emeritus Professor in Management and Marketing, London Business School; Former Chairman, Which?; Co-author of The War Against the BBC - pbarwise@london.eduLouie Marlow - Content Producer at Young Fabians - https://twitter.com/louiemarlowThis event was recorded on Tuesday 17th November. To all our listeners: we want you in our podcast, so if you're passionate about a topic just get in touch with us at podcast@youngfabians.org.ukFollow us on social media:https://www.facebook.com/PodcastYFhttps://twitter.com/PodcastYfDonate to the Young Fabians https://bit.ly/326RrJYThe intro music is by ‘One in a Googolplex' and used under Creative Commons. This year's events have brought many conversations regarding Black issues to the forefront. With the BLM protests sparking discussions about police brutality and racial profiling; Coronavirus exposing the deep, existing inequalities against Black people in the UK; and the first Black History Month debate in Parliament in 5 years, addressing the growing calls to decolonise the school curriculum and make UK education more representative of BAME history. In this week's episode, we are joined by political activist and singer-songwriter Jermain Jackman, who is running to become the first black male member of The Labour Party's NEC, as well as newly-elected YF Exec member, Nicki Adeleke. We talked about Black British History, the importance of teaching Britain's colonial past, the underlying issues within the Labour Party and what needs to be done to make it a more representative and inclusive place for Black members, and much more!Speakers:Jermain Jackman - Chair of 1987 Caucus, Co-chair of Hackney Young Futures and candidate for Labour's NEC https://twitter.com/JermainJackmanNicki Adeleke - Vice-Chair of Young Fabians Health Network and member of the YF Executive Committee https://twitter.com/morenikeadelekeLouie Marlow - Content Producer at Young Fabians https://twitter.com/louiemarlowThis event was recorded on Tuesday 3rd November. The North of England has been disproportionately affected by the Coronavirus crisis. Having the highest amount of cases and deaths in the country has led to strict lockdown restrictions for months on end, understandably causing tensions in the North to grow. However, last week another sharp blow was delivered by the government to Andy Burnham and the people of Greater Manchester through an insufficient amount of funding to support the area and reverse the damage that Tier 3 will bring to the area. It's worth remembering that Boris Johnson, in his first speech as Prime Minister, made clear that he would not take the support from the 'red wall' for granted and expressed his intent to 'level up' the North, but so far it's been quite the opposite, with more attention and support being afforded to London and parts of the North feeling dejected and forgotten. The North-South divide is a very real thing which more than ever represents deep inequality and growing disillusionment - with the Covid crisis exposing the many gaps between the two sides of England. This week I'm joined by three fellow Young Fabians: Donya Jeyabalasingham, Amy Dwyer and Tom Laing for a chat about all of these different factors behind the exacerbation of the North-South Divide in recent months. For the past 10 years, consecutive governments have certainly not made life any easier for young people. From the hike in tuition costs and removal of maintenance grants to the funding cuts for schools and rising class numbers, the list goes on. However, in recent months, the government has been so clearly ineffective and incompetent in their inability to provide the basic support that school children, students and the whole education sector deserves throughout this crisis. In this week's episode, I'm joined by Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston and Shadow Secretary of State for Education, to discuss the ways which consecutive governments have failed young people and the education sector, as well as throughout the pandemic and what the Labour Party's vision for education reform looks like.We also talked about Kate's work in tackling child poverty and social and educational inequalities prior to becoming an MP, as well as her experience within the Fabian Society, of which she is a member of the Executive Committee and former Chair!Speakers:Kate Green MP - Shadow Secretary of State for Education https://twitter.com/KateGreenSULouie Marlow - Content Producer at Young Fabians https://twitter.com/louiemarlowThis event was recorded on Wednesday 7th October. To all our listeners: we want you in our podcast, so if you're passionate about a topic just get in touch with us at podcast@youngfabians.org.uk Follow us on social media:https://www.facebook.com/PodcastYFhttps://twitter.com/PodcastYfDonate to the Young Fabians https://bit.ly/326RrJYThe intro music is by ‘One in a Googolplex' and used under Creative Commons. The president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, is often been referred to as Europe's last dictator. But could this all be about to change? Earlier this month, Belarus held a presidential election which it was announced that Lukashenko, who has ruled the nation undemocratically since 1994, had once again won with a huge majority. From then until now, Belarusians have taken to the streets in their masses through protests, rallies and worker strikes, on an unprecedented scale, calling for Lukashenko's resignation. Podcast regulars Carolina Saludes, Redha Rubaie and Mark McVitie are joined by political and public policy strategist Kendall Aitcliffe to break down the Dominic Cummings scandal that gripped the UK last weekend. Will Boris Johnson be able to shake off the bad publicity from Dom's behaviour? Can the Government be taken seriously after its most senior advisor ignored the rules to travel half way round the country with Covid? Will we ever be able to look at Barnard Castle without mentioning Spec Savers? We also discuss Labour's response to the scandal, more widely to the Covid-19 crisis, the appointment of David Evans as new General Secretary, and how they have to position themselves to win. This episode was recorded Thursday 28th May, before further allegations from the police about whether Cummings' conduct broke lockdown rules. The plot thickens... On May 14th, Labour Housing Group and the Young Fabians interviewed Thangam Debbonaire MP, Labour's new Shadow Secretary of State for Housing. They talked about how Labour can tackle the housing crisis and homelessness in the 2020s - whether from community halls, council chambers or Whitehall offices. The talk was then picked up by LabourList, sparking debate about whether the ‘cancel-rent' policy should be taken up by the Party.Follow the Labour Housing Group online at https://twitter.com/labourhousing, Thangam Debbonaire MP at https://twitter.com/ThangamMP, and Chris Worrall at https://twitter.com/itschrisworrallTo all our female listeners: we want you in our podcast, so if you're passionate about a topic just get in touch with us at podcast@youngfabians.org.uk. Victoria Parrett, chair of the Arts and Culture Network at the Young Fabians and Gender Studies graduate from LSE, interviews lawyer and activist Deeba Syed. Deeba, who is herself an ex-Young Fabians executive committee member, and a lawyer specialising in sexual harassment, comes on the Pod to talk about what made her want to dedicate her life to women's rights at work, how she became a lawyer, and her groundbreaking work with Rights of Women. After the #metoo movement, the Harvey Weinstein trial and the Alex Salmond trial, this conversation couldn't me more prescient, even during the lockdown. Rishi Sunak had his maiden budget speech yesterday, and of course we had to get together and do some appropriately Fabian analysis on it. Led by YF and economist Jeevun Sandher and Pensions Actuary Kyalo Burt-Fulcher, they discussed the headline spend pledges, measures to fight Covid-19, some of Dominic Cummings'pet projects (Maths Academies anyone?) and what it all means in the current political climate. Plus that Corbyn speech. They're joined by producer Carolina Saludes, and YF and musician Tom Platter.
