My guest today has made history – more than once. Dawn Butler, MP for Brent Central was only the third Black woman elected to parliament, when she became an MP in 2005, aged 37. She was the first Black female whip and then the first Black woman to stand at the dispatch box four years later. You might know her, though, as the person who was ejected from the House of Commons for saying what so many people were thinking and using her parliamentary privilege to call Boris Johnson a liar. But before all that Dawn was a computer programmer - no small achievement for a black woman who grew up in the 70s. She also worked in a job centre and then for the GMB union. In short, she is not your common or garden privileged career politician. Now 53, Dawn joined me to talk about what drives her, putting her mission down on paper for her new book A Purposeful Life and how being diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago caused a total rethink. We also discussed menopause, learning to be still in the moment, why she has no time for women who pull the ladder up behind them and the power of a lime green suitIf you enjoyed this episode you might also like the episodes featuring Nicola Sturgeon and Sabrina Pace-Humphreys.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including A Purposeful Life by Dawn Butler, and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. You've probably heard the quote, "Well-behaved women seldom make history", but you might be surprised by what Laurel Thatcher Ulrich really meant by this statement, and once you hear it you'll never be able to hear this quote the same way.Thatcher, a historian, author, educator, and mother of 5 dedicated her work to telling the quiet stories of ordinary people...and she won a Pulitzer Prize for it. Because, as she states, “it is in the very dailiness, the exhaustive, repetitious dailiness, that the real power lies… living has to be measured in doing.” and mommas...our lives are a very measure in doing, and doing, and doing.Often this quote is misunderstood to mean that in order to change the world and make a difference we must be aggressive, loud, and bold...but it was merely to share that the quiet and compliant contributions of women rarely get attention or credit for their accomplishments. That's us mommas. We're living that truth every single day, because what we do. It matters. Oh man does it matter. In our new series, "Just" a Mom, we are celebrating the beautiful stories of ordinary, well-behaved women...who we know are far more than what we see at first glance. The lives we are living have incredible beauty and power in them, and we want to share them with the world.Welcome to the ‘Just a Mom' Series…Just a Mom (01:50)Mildred Clima Granger (02:20)Wilma Noble (06:20)Invitation (08:53)But we KNOW that EVERY momma has a story and wisdom to share! During this series, we'll be highlighting different women (like you and I) who have done amazing things…and we'd love to feature YOU! Reach out to us @thedeliberateday on Instagram and we'll share ALL the details!
My guest today is Laurel Ulrich, (I corrected her first name. In the previous note, it was Laura) a retired professor from Harvard University. Despite societal expectations that women should focus solely on homemaking, Laura pursued her education and received a Ph.D. while raising five children. She has authored several books, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Midwife's Tale, and is known for her catchphrase “well-behaved women seldom make history.” In her latest book, A House Full of Females, Laura explores the surprising connection between plural marriage and women's suffrage in 1870. She is truly a delightful person, and I am sure you will agree after listening to this episode. Please give this podcast a thumbs up and tap the subscribe button. Host Marcia Franklin talks with Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Idaho native Laurel Thatcher Ulrich about her latest book, "Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History." Ulrich, a professor at Harvard University, coined the phrase in a scholarly paper she wrote in the 1970s. Franklin and her guest discuss how growing up in Idaho influenced Professor Ulrich to become a historian. She also explains why she calls herself "a Mormon feminist" and why she believes "good history is almost always dangerous." Franklin recorded this interview after Ulrich's Distinguished Humanities Lecture in Idaho Falls for the Idaho Humanities Council. Originally Aired: 06/11/2009

In honor of Women's History Month, we're asking ourselves... "What does it mean to be a woman?" For today's guest Melissa Herrera, being a woman means being resilient. Melissa is the host & creator of Mimosa Sisterhood, a women's history & lifestyle podcast dedicated to celebrating & amplifying women's voices, past and present. But don't mistake her for a historian. What started as two girlfriends in college studying feminist history who regularly ditched class to drink at the bar, has now turned into a weekly celebration of women's stories with Melissa's unique spin of "equal parts feminist and equal parts party girl"! Melissa's mission is to set the record straight about women in history by sharing captivating stories of women whose stories were either swept under the rug or completely written over. And to celebrate this month of HERstory, we asked Melissa to bring three of her favorite must-know women of history to talk about on the podcast today! This week, Kelsie and Brooke discuss how women who were well behaved rarely made history-- and then discussed how women joined the early Christian church in big numbers, and examined two women who defied the odds during early Christianity. Perpetua was a Christian martyr who gave her life for the faith before Rome adopted Christianity. Hypatia by contrast, lost her life to a Christian mob that expelled the Jews and Pagans in Alexandria. Their stories are unbelievable and show the centrality of women in history. Perth seems ‘a million miles away’ from New York City, but it frames the journey of Carmel Dean; a musical practitioner of intellectual and creative power. She has been applauded extensively in a variety of roles that include Composer, Musical Director, Arranger and Pianist.Early training in classical piano and study at The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, confirmed an ambition harboured by Carmel. She wanted to create, write and perform music, chiefly in the genre of musical theatre. In 2001 she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study in the United States and subsequently graduated from NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing program.A dynamic approach to her work and an easy charm saw her triumph in a succession of creative tasks; transcribing, teaching and accompaniment, building collaborative relationships and demonstrating solid instincts. These experiences soon lead to roles in Musical Direction. As Musical Director, she has guided the Broadway productions of If/Then, Hands on a Hardbody, American Idiot and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Off-Broadway credits include Everyday Rapture, Vanities and Elegies - A Song Cycle by William Finn.As Composer, Carmel’s first musical, Renascence, was produced Off-Broadway and was named Best New Musical at the 2018 Off-Broadway Alliance Awards. Michael C. Bailey left journalism for the same reason most newspapers have left journalism - there's no money in it! Hahaha ... actually, that's not funny. Anywhozzle. He's since embarked on a rather successful career as a novelist, with three ongoing series - Action Figures (young adult), Strongarm & Lightfoot (fantasy), and Well Behaved Women (urban fantasy) among other writing projects. All of his work can be found at innsmouthlook.com, including signed copies of his novels, so give it a look! And check out Strongarm & Lightfoot on Audible! #writing #fantasy #novel #innsmouthlook

In this episode of the pod, Emily and Meredith do another quick run-down of recent news about the #MeToo movement, including the latest public opinion polling data, an op-ed by a man who encourages men to own up to their sexist attitudes, and a New York Times piece about men sharing stories of actions they regret. The takeaway? Boys, share your feelings! Split a pair of headphones out of an iPod mini and talk about your emotions! Intro music courtesy of bensound.com
Emily and Meredith do a super-charged, very spastic lightning round, discussing recent stories about abortion, the #MeToo movement in ballet, and the New York Times’ great piece about young women turning 18 around the world. There are tangents to be had and some much-needed laughs after all the Kava-news. Intro music courtesy of bensound.com.

Trigger warning: This episode of Well-Behaved Women contains detailed descriptions of sexual harassment, assault, and rape. Meredith and Emily share their stories with sexual harassment, and share a few anonymous, brave listener #WhyIDidntReport stories as well. And guess what? Even as we’re releasing this episode, we’re still really nervous about sharing our own experiences. This isn’t a fun episode, but we hope it brings you some sense of whatever it is that you need in this national moment. #BelieveSurvivors
Popcorn Talk Network proudly presents The Unproduced Table Read, a weekly Vodcast series featuring Hollywood's best unproduced pilot and movie scripts read by professional actors, accompanied exclusive writer interviews and insight! Cable news has become a staple of American media and politics, and it seems like the vitriolic and bipartisan gulf currently plaguing our country has never been more prominent. Those themes take center stage in today's feature where a conservative talk radio host learns that her daughter is a lesbian, on air. Laugh and cry with us as we read WELL BEHAVED WOMEN. Lots of people are credited with coining the great phrase, “well-behaved women rarely make history.” These include Marilyn Monroe, Gloria Steinem, Eleanor Roosevelt, Anne Boleyn, and our own Aunt Ginger from the Buzzkill Institute. Given time, any powerful woman with backbone and verve will get credit for this phrase and sentiment. Listen and learn who said it first.
Are there times in your life where you shrink, hide, apologize, or lie to yourself or others, because you are afraid that certain people might not “like” you? If so, are you OK with that?

This is a classic. I pulled this episode from the vault, back when we were on our old host site, so all the new listeners can enjoy it! I am joined by 5 lovely ladies as we crack open a few bottles of wine and air some dirty laundry! These are our confessions. We talk about so many things in this episode, everything from birth control and how hormones can totally ruin you, to anti depressants, to sex and relationships, to how womens products are marketed to make you feel horrible about yourself and all of the insecurities we have. This is a super fun episode and a great way to hear what women really think. I also wanted to put this one up because I will be doing this same idea again, but with a new group of girls. I love hearing all of the different perspectives that come with fresh faces, and I know you won't be disappointed! Really looking forward to that episode going up next weekend. Please subscribe, rate & review in the iTunes store and we're now on Stitcher Radio as well! Ellen Byerrum says: "The women I remember in my life, as well as in my favorite books, have all been strong characters. They are louder, faster funnier. They are interesting, aggravating, fascinating, infuriating. They engage you. They are bold and brave and unforgettable. They take risks, they forge ahead while others stay put in their comfort. How could I not write about strong women? Simply put, strong women are more interesting. I love the saying, "Well-behaved women don't make history." Well, strong women do make history whether they are queens, ordinary women who act in extraordinary ways, or Old West madams who fight duels with other ladies of the night. When I write about Lacey Smithsonian, my reluctant fashion-reporting sleuth, I love it when she surprises me with what she sees, and does, and says. She forces me to learn about new subjects with each book. And even better, because of her, I have met some wonderful readers and writers. She has broadened my horizons.
