Creating a more welcoming ward. Travis brought his own energy and personality to his calling. 21:20 Principle 2 - Kindness. People feel welcome and wanted no matter what. This can happen in so many ways but as a leader sitting with people empathetically. 23:30 Putting aside the administrative side of the calling and making sure you see people and talk with them 25:00 Anxiety peaks for a lot of people on Sunday. They feel overwhelmed and Travis really wanted to change that. Is church a place that is worthy to receive everyone in whatever state they are in? 27:30 What Travis' ward did in sacrament meeting to manifest their vision of creating a more warm and welcoming ward 30:00 Leadership needs to make their vision very very clear. All the leaders in the ward need to understand and see the vision. 34:20 Principle 3 - Propinquity. After covid, Travis' ward needed to grow back together and they would get together as much as possible. Find the beautiful in other people. 41:30 Principle 4 - Lower the bar and increase participation. It might be controversial but let's make the bar so low that it's impossible not to reach it. People feel like the bar is so high that they are afraid to participate. So in some cases we really need to lower the bar. 44:30 We can also lower the bar with callings. Do people need to be perfectly worthy to have a calling? So many people are sitting on the sidelines that want to participate but aren't given the chance. How can we enable people to serve instead of limiting them? 46:40 There is a temple standard of worthiness and a chapel standard of worthiness. Chapel worthiness is if you walk through the door then you are worthy. 47:20 When you are called as a leader you inevitably stretch. Being refined as a person. Noah Kagan (@noahkagan) is the founder and Chief Sumo at AppSumo.com, a company that provides tools and content to help entrepreneurs grow their businesses. Under Noah's leadership, AppSumo has grown to over $10 million in annual revenue. Before starting AppSumo, Noah held key roles at two of tech's fastest-growing companies. He was employee #30 at Facebook, where he worked directly with Mark Zuckerberg to build their advertising platform. He then became the 4th employee at Mint.com, the popular online personal finance company that Intuit acquired for $170 million. A self-described "taco-loving" entrepreneur, Noah draws on his experiences building and scaling multiple eight-figure internet companies to help and inspire other entrepreneurs. As Chief Sumo at AppSumo, he pushes the boundaries of what's possible in business, marketing, and personal development. He's also the author of Million Dollar Weekend, a comprehensive guide on how to take action and build the business (and life) of your dreams. Noah's journey from Facebook and Mint.com to leading AppSumo provides unique insights and lessons for any entrepreneur looking to start, build, or grow their own business. What Travis and Noah discussed: Take action even if you don't have full clarity yet. In the absence of clarity, take action anyway to gain more clarity. By taking small actions, you'll get feedback that helps validate or invalidate ideas faster. This allows you to fail fast and learn. Surround yourself with people smarter than you. Connect with smart people early on before they get really big. This allows you to more easily build relationships that can pay dividends down the road. Start small, test quickly. You can start a business over a weekend without spending much money. Validate your idea by getting real customer feedback fast before investing more time and money in building out a bigger vision. Keep trying new ideas. Successful entrepreneurs try many different business ideas, most of which may fail before they find success. By continually trying new ideas and using the feedback, you get better at executing. There are big risks in not being an entrepreneur, including not having control over your schedule and life. As an entrepreneur, you design your ideal life. Even if you don't become a millionaire, you can create a business that gives you more freedom. This was an insightful conversation with Noah Kagan, a successful entrepreneur who built a $80 million per year business after being let go from Facebook. He shares his journey of trying over a dozen different business ideas that failed before finding his big success. Noah reveals that you don't need a lot of money or time to start a business that can change your life, anyone can do it over a weekend. Listen to this full Travis Makes Friends episode to get all the details on Noah's weekend business launch framework. Thais Gibson (@thepersonaldevelopmentschool) is an acclaimed personal development leader and counselor known for her pioneering work on the subconscious mind and attachment theory. With over 38 million views across her platforms, Thais has helped thousands transform limiting beliefs and behaviors through her integrated attachment theory model. This expansion on traditional attachment theory empowers the healing of different life attachments to enable personal growth. Thais founded The Personal Development School, offering acclaimed courses based on her academic training and in-depth client research. She is certified in over 13 modalities, including CBT and NLP, with a Ph.D. in the field. What Travis and Thais discussed: Going through hardship and pain can be extremely valuable. As Thais said, the hardest times of her life taught her the most important lessons. Embracing and learning from adversity makes us stronger. Understanding the subconscious mind is key to personal growth. Our subconscious drives up to 95-97% of our behaviors, yet most people focus solely on the conscious mind. We must reprogram limiting subconscious beliefs that hold us back. We are all wired for connection and suffer in its absence. Thais noticed that many of her affluent clients created unnecessary problems due to a lack of fulfillment. Seeking genuine bonds with others provides meaning. Food and the environment affect mental health more than most realize. Poor nutrition and societal divisions breed widespread issues. Taking control of our health and thinking for ourselves is essential. We must align conscious goals with subconscious needs to achieve them. Self-sabotage happens when conscious desires conflict with subconscious priorities. Identifying core needs and limiting beliefs allows us to remove inner resistance. This thought-provoking discussion was about overcoming hardship, mastering the mind, the need for connection, societal issues, and achieving goals. Eric Skwarczynski (@eskwarczynski) is a versatile media professional with a passion for storytelling. Over the past 7 years, he has worked in various roles, including videographer, photographer, writer, and graphic designer, taking him to over 20 states and 13 countries. His mission is to shed light on the important issue of mental, physical, and sexual abuse within Independent Baptist Churches. He hosts the Preacher Boys podcast, which launched in January 2020 and has since amassed millions of downloads. Content from his podcast has been featured on Peacock and CBC, and on his accompanying YouTube channel. He has also launched a second YouTube channel, Film School'd, featuring directors, actors, writers, Academy Award-winning FX artists, and more film industry experts. Today, Eric is promoting the new documentary "Let Us Prey: A Ministry of Scandals" which premieres on Investigation Discovery on November 24th and 25th of 2023. The four-part docuseries exposes predatory behavior within Independent Fundamental Baptist Churches and gives voice to survivors seeking justice. Featuring first-hand accounts from survivors like Ruthy Heiler, Kathy Durbin, and Amanda Householder, Let Us Prey offers crucial insight into the troubling culture within the IFB. Eric's testimony is also featured in the documentary, continuing his mission to shed light on abuse within Independent Baptist Churches. What Travis and Eric discussed: Why Eric started the Preacher Boys podcast to expose abuse and corruption in the Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) church community he grew up in. He felt someone needed to uncover the problems, even though he was no longer part of the church. The upcoming documentary "Let Us Prey" on Investigation Discovery and HBO Max will shine a bigger spotlight on abuse in the IFB. Eric and others spent significant time being interviewed for it. According to Eric, the IFB attracts and enables abuse because of its authoritarian power structure, purity culture, and lack of accountability for leaders. It sends the message that abuse will be tolerated. Both Eric and Travis emphasize the importance of continual questioning and keeping an open mind, rather than sticking dogmatically to answers that can't be questioned. This prevents becoming trapped in harmful fundamentalist thinking. They feel empathy for Christians saddened by their deconversions but ultimately had to be honest about their beliefs. Mutual love and conversation matter more than agreement. This raw, revealing conversation exposed the rampant abuse and silencing in Christian fundamentalist circles, through Eric's courageous Preacher Boys podcast and the upcoming documentary "Let Us Prey." However, effecting real change requires questioning the system and speaking truth, with integrity and empathy. Travis and Eric model this by engaging kindly across deep divides. Listen to this entire inspiring episode if you want inspiration to fight injustice with compassion. By leading with moral courage, we can take away permission to abuse power, in churches or anywhere else. A better world is possible when we stand for truth empathetically. His infectious positivity and compassion have struck a chord with followers and brands alike. Stevie and Sazan have been featured extensively in major publications, including Cosmopolitan, People, Forbes.com, and graced the covers of magazines like Austin Living and Magnify. At his core, Stevie aims to spread more love, joy and inspiration through his work - regardless of algorithms, platforms or ventures. He is dedicated to uplifting others and making a difference through the incredible reach of his digital profiles. Their book A Real Good Life will help you be more intentional with each hour of your day, build deeper connections, establish sustainable rhythms, recognize the value of reflecting, focusing, gathering, and resting, and inspire you to cherish life's gift in each moment. What Travis and Stevie Discussed: Work hard when you're young to set yourself up for success later. In your 20s, you have energy and time on your side that you won't have later when you have more responsibilities. Use that time to grind, take risks, and build skills that set you up for bigger success down the road. Have a vision for your work. Grinding just to grind accomplishes little. Understand the lifestyle you want in the future, and use the hustle of your younger years to build towards that vision. With a purpose behind it, hard work in your 20s pays off enormously later. Struggle now or struggle later - the struggle is inevitable. It's better to purposefully take on hard things when you're young and able to control the circumstances more. Putting off struggle until later only makes it more difficult. Embrace the necessary struggle on your terms. The hustle is about focused, quality work, not just quantity of hours. Work smarter by examining how you spend your time and cutting out unproductive activities. A few hours of deep focus outpaces unfocused work for 14+ hours. The hustle is about working intelligently. Cultivate the garden you have. Your life circumstances may not be ideal or what you envisioned, but you can still cultivate goodness daily. Start with the garden you have rather than wishing for a different plot - make the most of the gifts and people around you now. Stevie provides an inspiring perspective on making the most of your younger years and cultivating a life you love. For more insights, be sure to listen to the full conversation on the Travis Makes Friends podcast episode with Stevin and how his book "A Real Good Life expands on creating meaning through simple, daily moments. What Travis and Ajit discussed: Achieve clarity on what you truly want. Ajit realized he wanted to be healthy and energetic as he aged so he could keep up with his future grandkids. Once he got clear on his desire, he was able to make the lifestyle changes needed. Friendships require vulnerability and consistency over time. Ajit believes in developing deep, meaningful friendships built on trust rather than having many shallow connections. This requires being open and spending quality time together. Entrepreneurship fosters personal growth. Ajit was drawn to business because whether you succeed or fail, you will transform in some way. It pushes you to improve, unlike a regular job. Listen to your heart's desires, not society's. Don't let others dictate what you should want. Connect to your own inner wisdom about the life you wish to create. Take bold action when you realize your truth. After Ajit's "come to Jesus" moment on New Year's Eve, he made many major changes in alignment with his soul's purpose. Jen Gottlieb (@jen_gottlieb) joins Travis Chappell in this inspiring episode of Travis Makes Friends to discuss her journey as an entrepreneur, speaker, and author. From auditioning for Broadway roles to creating a personal training business to manifesting her dream partner, Jen shares the ups and downs that eventually led her to where she is today. Before co-founding Super Connector Media, Jen Gottlieb was pursuing her dreams of becoming an actress in New York City. Her dedication led to landing a role in the Broadway National Tour of The Wedding Singer. But that was just the start of Jen's acting career. She went on to score a role on the hit VH1 TV series That Metal Show as "Miss Box of Junk", aka "The Vanna White of Rock and Roll". The only problem? Jen wasn't actually a fan of heavy metal music. After the show's cancellation and a breakup all in one week, Jen turned hardship into growth. She realized sometimes difficult times happen so transformation can too. Jen created the fulfillment, alignment, visibility and impact she dreamed of by fully stepping into the spotlight and letting the world see the real her. Jen currently is promoting her new book: BE SEEN. Her book is the ultimate roadmap that will show you how to live out the life that you know you were meant to live. Not only will it help you build the confidence necessary to make this happen, it will equip you with all the essential tools you need to find your unique voice, build your brand, and live out loud! What Travis and Jen discussed: Why you need to take action to manifest your goals. Jen manifested huge milestones like booking her dream role and meeting her husband by not just visualizing what she wanted but also taking steps to make it happen. Manifesting requires putting yourself in the right situations and opportunities. How to turn rejection into fuel. Jen has faced rejection throughout her life, from losing out on acting roles to having book proposals turned down by publishers. But she used those rejections as motivation to keep taking action and work harder. Rejection is part of success. The importance of being yourself. Jen got cast on a TV show by showcasing her true personality, not the persona she thought they wanted. She lost herself playing a character on TV for years. Your authentic self will connect best with your audience. The reason behind never giving up. No matter how many setbacks Jen faced, she persisted in pursuing her goals. She knew what she wanted even as a child and never let anything stop her from achieving it. If you stay committed, you can create the life you envision. The truth about finding purpose. Jen thought her purpose was acting, but it evolved into motivational speaking which feels more aligned. Sometimes your purpose is not what you expect. Stay open and it will reveal itself. This conversation is perfect for any aspiring entrepreneur or creator. Be sure to listen to the full episode and feel inspired by Jen's story! At just 26 years old, Aleric Heck (@alericheck) has already accomplished what most entrepreneurs only dream of. He started on YouTube over 14 years ago by creating AppFind, which grew into the largest app review channel at the time with over 500k subscribers. Now Aleric runs the highly successful 8-figure company AdOutreach, where he empowers entrepreneurs to harness the power of value-driven video and scale their businesses on YouTube. His clients have collectively generated multiple 9 figures in revenue. Aleric has received ClickFunnels prestigious 2CommaClub-X award, and AdOutreach was ranked the 87th fastest growing company in America by INC 5000. Leveraging his phenomenal results, Aleric has built several other ventures, acquired companies, and invested in businesses with a mission to empower entrepreneurs to share their ideas and solutions with the world. What Travis and Aleric discussed: Mistakes are inevitable when building a business. Rather than get discouraged, view mistakes as tuition you pay to learn. Refine based on data and feedback, but persist through failures on the path to success. Aleric made many mistakes starting his agency, but learned from them. Recurring revenue models are better for establishing long-term relationships and enterprise value versus one-off sales. Big companies obsess over recurring revenue for this reason. With one-off sales, each new deal feels like starting over. With recurring revenue, you continually earn trust. Running YouTube ads to your own public videos as in-stream ads can harm your channel's organic performance. The reason is that in-stream ads are skippable, so they negatively impact watch time metrics. However, in-feed ads that appear in search can boost discoverability without hurting watch time. When first starting out, it's best to niche down and focus on mastering one core skillset or service, then expand from there. This allows you to provide immense value in one area before branching out. Aleric started with a niche YouTube channel reviewing mobile apps, then leveraged that expertise to build his YouTube ads agency. To grow a YouTube channel with ads, first let your best-performing content rise organically. Then boost those top videos through in-feed ads targeted to your ideal audience. This amplifies reach while optimizing for watch time. Simply "boosting" without targeting is less effective. This is a fascinating discussion with YouTube ads expert Aleric Heck on the Travis Makes Friends podcast. To hear more expert entrepreneurial advice from Aleric and others, be sure to check out the full episode! Don't forget to subscribe to our Youtube Channel, @travismakesfriends Follow Travis on: IG
Natalie Friedman (@nataliefriedman) is a triple, or better yet quadruple-threat Actor, Comedian, and Voice Actor well known for her celebrity impressions and characters. Kim Kardashian, Cardi B, Chris Brown, Jamie Foxx, Entertainment Tonight, Complex magazine, and more have recognized and reshared her work. With a background in improv and Upright Citizen's Brigade Theater (UCB), coupled with graduating from acting school William Esper Studio, Natalie has a plethora of acting experience and has recently taken the social media world by storm with her edgy comedy, with over 1M Instagram followers. Natalie speaks fluent Russian and has mastered dozens of internal accents and over 50 character/celebrity voices. Seems like all bets are on Natalie getting on SNL soon! What Travis and Natalie discussed: How to build a social media following over time: Natalie talks about how she slowly built up her social media presence over many years, starting from just a few thousand followers. It requires consistently creating and posting content, finding your niche, collaborating with others, and having some viral moments along the way. Rome wasn't built in a day. The importance of embracing failure and rejection: Natalie discusses bombing on stage and having shows where she considered giving up comedy. Pushing through failure and rejection is crucial for success in comedy, entrepreneurship, and most fields. Use failures as learning experiences. Why you should pursue your interests even if it means leaving people behind: Natalie left Minnesota to pursue comedy in NYC. Travis discusses leaving his religious upbringing to find "his people". Following your passion often means parting ways with some people from your past. The truth about loneliness and human connection: We are more digitally connected today yet often more lonely. Natalie emphasizes making relationships a priority, being open to new friendships, and not overly judging/labeling people. Go out, join groups, and meet people. Talk to strangers. How to collaborate with other creators: Natalie suggests reaching out through specific asks and ideas that add value, organically meeting people through your niche, and attending collab days to brainstorm content. Surround yourself with people pursuing similar interests. Do you ever feel like you don't quite fit in with the people around you? Are you pursuing big dreams that your current friends and family don't really understand? Well, you need to listen to Travis's inspirational chat with comedian Natalie Friedman to hear how she broke out of her small town in Minnesota to bravely pursue stand-up comedy and social media fame in the big cities of NYC and LA. Growing up traveling and being exposed to different cultures, she found that books, music, and TV shows were a common language that helped her connect with people from all backgrounds. This early passion for storytelling never left her, even when she pursued business in college. To succeed in Hollywood, you have to want it more than everybody else. Adhrucia stresses that it's not about talent, connections or who you know - it's about determination. The people who make it are the ones who simply want it the most and are willing to work harder than anyone else to achieve it. Learn the business side of your creative industry. Adhrucia went back to learn the money and economics of the entertainment business, even though she was initially allergic to anything financial. This allowed her to better understand how to create and sell her work, and gave her more creative freedom. Have confidence in a backup skill. Knowing she could rely on being a good salesperson or e-commerce entrepreneur gave Adhrucia the confidence to fully commit to producing instead of playing it safe with a side hustle. Develop expertise in multiple skills to increase your confidence. Redefine what success looks like for you. Adhrucia encourages creators to see money made from art, whether on YouTube, Vimeo or elsewhere, as success - not just traditionally-defined achievements like Oscars. Reframe your definition of success within your industry. What Travis and Rebecca discussed: Why Consistency is Key: Rebecca explains that it took her around 10 years of consistently speaking at networking events, publishing articles, and building her brand before she reached a point where she no longer had to market her law practice actively. This shows the importance of sticking with marketing and branding efforts over the long haul rather than giving up after just a few attempts. How to Leverage Relationships: Rebecca highlights how key relationships, like the one with her best friend who encouraged her and the woman who gave her an existing law practice, were pivotal moments that helped propel her forward. The Reason Behind Rebecca's Pivot: After building a very successful law practice, Rebecca explains she merged it with others because she was burnt out. This shows that even when something is going well, don't be afraid to make a change if it no longer aligns with your passion and purpose. Why Negotiating with a Narcissist is Challenging: Rebecca explains that narcissists see things as black and white, and their goal is often not just to win but to make the other person lose. She notes that trying to negotiate with a narcissist rationally typically doesn't work because they are focused on their own self-interest and "narcissistic supply." Rebecca suggests figuring out what matters most to the narcissist and using that as leverage when negotiating. How to Turn Setbacks into Opportunities: When a business partnership went south, Rebecca used it as motivation to double down on her strengths. She refined her negotiation program, embraced online marketing, and ultimately built a thriving business that allowed her to make a bigger impact. If you want to learn tactical strategies for achieving your biggest goals, listen to this podcast episode featuring lawyer-turned-entrepreneur Rebecca Zung. You'll discover how her grit and ability to turn setbacks into opportunities ultimately led to the thriving business she has today. Travis Richey is an entrepreneur and speaker. At the age of 25, Travis managed a hedge fund with millions of dollars under management. Due to a regulatory oversight in the State of Arizona, he was charged with transactions of an unregistered securities dealer and sentenced to 2 years in Arizona Department of Corrections. This 17,520 hours became the framework of Travis' new mission in life; he founded AccomplishED Ventures to provide incarcerated and returned citizens the proper resources for a second chance at a successful life. Over the past 10 years he created the largest incarcerated curriculum company In America. His weekly message is seen or heard by over 500,000 inmates. When Travis is not impacting the incarcerated community, he speaks the language of identity and adversity to youth around the world, helping them understand their greatness and true potential. Travis' message to the world is that biography is not destiny and no matter your past circumstances, you are in control of how far you go in life and what you achieve. Travis lives by the idea that every adversity carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit; the challenge is for most people that they're so focused on the adversity in front of them that they don't water the seed. Travis believes that the worst prisons in America are not made of concrete and steel, but moreso the limiting beliefs which keep us locked inside a mindset—or even worse, a life that does not serve our potential or purpose. Travis served in the Washington, Spokane mission and has degrees in finance and business administration. He has served in various church callings: nursery, Primary, Young Men, elders quorum, and his current and favorite calling as Gospel Doctrine instructor. Dave Lukas, The Misfit Entrepreneur_Breakthrough Entrepreneurship
This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur Travis Chambers. Travis is the founder of Chamber Media, a firm that takes companies from being product and service sellers to brand builders by doing what he calls story selling through creating scalable social video ads that drive millions in sales. Travis led distribution and content strategy for “YouTube’s #1 Ad of the Decade,” Kobe vs. Messi which amassed over 140 million views. He’s worked with some of the biggest brands in the world including Yahoo, Kraft, Old Navy, Coca-Cola and has been featured in AdWeek, Forbes, HuffPost, and Inc. Magazine. Travis regularly speaks at conferences such as INBOUND, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Google Growth Summit, VidCon, and VidSummit among many others. But, what I love most is that Travis built his business to suit his lifestyle. It was goal from the start. And I’ve asked him to come on share how to do it. www.Chamber.media Everything started when Travis was a kid with 8 mm cameras. He got into the film industry and in his early 20’s had his first kid, his dad got Parkinson’s disease…and cancer…and divorced after working 70 hours per week his whole life. Everything hit him at once. He was working at 20th Century Fox in his dream job making commercials for the movies. Entrepreneurship had never crossed his mind. His “mid-life crisis” hit when he was 23 years old and made him ask what he really wanted to be doing with his life. He realized there was so much more out there, so he left and started Chamber Media to live life on his terms. What are those terms for you, your ideal lifestyle? Autonomy and flexibility Time with family (his was missing the early years with his kids) Work needs to be means to an end Find something you don’t hate that you are good at, that makes you the money for your lifestyle. This is one of the reasons his company has a 4-day workweek for all employees. He could not get this from a job, so he created it and helped others get it. Where does someone start? What do they need to consider to build a lifestyle business? You cannot go and compete in a mature market – it is a race to the bottom. Zero to One by Peter Thiel had a big influence on Travis. You should never start a business that cannot be a monopoly. It needs to be so unique and so much its own thing that it can’t be easily replicated – you may get competition, but they can’t do it exactly like you or get the results you can get. Find your “blue ocean” “Start with a service first. You can always sell yourself as an entrepreneur. And if you can sell yourself to one person, you can sell yourself to 100 and have a successful business.” Get good at your primary niche before branching out. Tell us about what you do and your principles you used to build and now run your business… In the Art of War, one of the main rules is to choose the battlefield. Too often people see a market leader and think they can do it. At that point, it’s too late. Once there is market leader in a mature market, the game is over. You’ve got to choose the pond that is growing into the ocean. The niche Travis found was video ads and buying them doing them before Facebook ads, etc. had even come about. Knowledge does not equate to wisdom. You have to understand industry in and out and use the wisdom gained to see the future. You cannot get good at anything until you say no to almost everything. The values of having a lifestyle business, staying boutique, etc. were extremely important and governed how they operated. Starting out they would only take on projects of $100k in above and would turn down ones below that. 5-6 years in, Travis and the team noticed that they really had a strong leadership layer and had replicated themselves and could now really scale. What have you put in place to allow the business to scale and let you step away? People and process. A lot of things broke as the company grew and their processes got seriously challenged and had to be worked through and improved over and over. Hiring people with the same values, hopes and dreams, and direction that the team has. They also have to believe what Travis and the team believe. Things like making a little less to have a 4-day workweek, etc. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned on your journey so far? The art of doing nothing. Being too aggressive can be the wrong route and Travis is prone to it. Surrounding himself with a leadership team that balances him ad helps bring logic as a group. Most problems don’t have to be solved “today.” Emotion kills. What is a “Story Seller?” A lot of the Fortune 500 focus heavily on building brand and making people feel a certain way about. When you are a small brand, you cannot play the same game as someone with a 100-million-dollar marketing budget. When you are small the best way to go is direct response marketing. It’s the only way to grow. Over the last 30 years, direct marketing has been primarily infomercials and direct mail. You can’t do that with digital or social as people have too much choice. They scroll quick through the newsfeed. At the 34 min mark, Travis talks about developing the “Everything Ad” and how they did it and the results of it. It is best to just listen. What makes a #1 video ad? What are the components that go into it to drive engagement and sales? 7 Ad categories perform best and vary by industry. Category 1: Spokesperson Video. It’s the highest performing. Only 2% of the top 1% of ads are spokesperson which offers a lot of opportunity. Category 2: Product Demo. 50% of the ads are product demos. Category 3: Social Proof. Press reviews, consumer reviews, ratings, etc. Anything to prove the solution is good. Category 4: Dynamic Ads. Creative that is made based on what the person has seen. Category 5: Case Studies. Any kind of empirical evidence that appeals to logic. Before and after, side by sides, scientific, etc. Category 6: Lifestyle. Showing what could be or feel like if someone had the solution. Category 7: Unboxing. Think Christmas morning and opening the surprise, etc. What Travis and his team found by chance is that most of the successful ads that they have done have all 7 of these in them in some way and you should strive to do so in yours. The Everything Ad ideal length is 90 seconds. Hook, Teaser, Problem, Solution, Another Problem, solution while weaving in all the categories (Spokesperson, social proof, unboxing, etc.) Anything else around marketing with video we should know? Pay attention to the news. Apple has highjacked Facebook somewhat. Apple has blocked the ability for ads to continue without an opt-in on its platform which is causing a big drop in ads being served. Travis explains everything that Facebook knows about you, a lot of it coming from paying credit card companies for data. Facebook is going to become more like TV as they won’t be able to retarget at the levels they have been able to do in the past, so the ads are going to really have to make an initial impression to stick. Best Quote: Start with a service first. You can always sell yourself as an entrepreneur. And if you can sell yourself to one person, you can sell yourself to 100 and have a successful business. Travis's Misfit 3: Work to live. Don’t live to work. Success and greatness are not the most important thing. Be truly present. Smart has the brains, but stupid has the balls. You can get really far with grit and strategy. You’re live will be judged by how you treat people, either by a higher power or by yourself depending on what you believe. What is Design for Good in the Classroom? As artist, visual arts educator and designer Travis Sevilla teaches it, it's a project-based curriculum that makes a difference. Travis shows Canyon Crest Academy students, grades nine through twelve, how to start with design thinking. Projects combine the STEAM disciplines--science, technology, engineering, art and math. Under Travis's guidance, his students use these skills to create a solution to a problem or a needed resource for a community. Past projects have included the Guanabara Bay Project, and Everybody's Mobility. For the Guanabara Bay Project, groups of students designed "superhero" characters to raise awareness of the problem of water pollution. Everybody's Mobility, according to Travis's teacher website, challenged the students to create branding for a family-owned local company which creates mobility devices for a wide range of clients. And at California STEAM Symposium 2019, Travis was showing fellow educators how to implement Design for Good in the Classroom in their arts curricula. His goal, he says, is to help more educators implement the program. We talked about Travis's work as both an educator and an artist, his favorite resources and some of the projects he and and his class have created. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How Travis first discovered his passion for art; How he first became involved in teaching STEAM concepts in the course of his work as a visual-art teacher; Some of the design projects through which he has guided his students; One of the biggest challenges he and his class navigated--and one of his favorite triumphs; His advice to fellow educators, on implementing a Design for Good in the Classroom curriculum; Travis' recommendations for favorite resources for fellow educators; How to support teachers and schools offering Design for Good in the Classroom curricula; Where Travis would like to take his program next (and how fellow educators can find out more!); A new forthcoming resource for educators (and a program to note, in the future!) What Travis has been painting (and the story behind his unique series of paintings!) Some of his favorite sources for "recharging" his creativity; One of the best lessons Travis himself has learned (and shared with his students), over the past few years;

Travis Wolfe, Jr. is a 13-year-old actor, hip hop and breakdancer, and host. After booking his very first audition for a 6ABC News promo, Travis knew he was destined to be an actor. Within five years, Travis landed the role of “Dele” in the CBS series Bob Hearts Abishola, and he’s been featured in shows like Grownish, The Neighborhood, and Laff Mob’s Laff Tracks. He also has a recurring role on Season 3 of Raven’s Home as “Lil Lo Lo.” Besides acting and dancing, Travis uses motivational speaking to encourage other young people to follow their dreams and pursue their passions. What it takes to succeed as an actor What do you think it takes to succeed as an actor? It’s not as easy as walking into your first audition and riding the easy train to sudden stardom. Travis says that most people don’t realize what a kid goes through in their journey to become a child actor. Putting a show together takes a lot of preparation and dedication from many people besides just the actors. Travis makes many sacrifices for his acting career, but he says it doesn’t feel like a job since he loves what he does. Besides his acting work on the Warner Brothers set, he has several hours of schoolwork to do every day. TWEET: Most people don’t realize what a kid goes through in their journey to become a child actor. @traviswolfejr #chasingdreams Learning from each experience Do you think most actors experience overnight success? Travis says that it rarely happens that way in the acting profession. He started off doing small parts in commercials and student films, and this path seems to be a normal rite of passage for most actors. Each role is another level to help you get the feel of what goes into the production process. Many actors have stories like Travis---of working hard to achieve their dreams. An interesting fact about Travis’ dreams is that he’d love to be a stand-up comedian someday. TWEET: Each role is another level to help you get the feel of what goes into the production process. @traviswolfejr #chasingdreams What Travis enjoys the most about acting What do you think is the best thing about acting? You might think it’s the paycheck, but that’s not what Travis says. What he loves most is the opportunity to interact with other people and form relationships with them. Actors don’t just arrive on the set and act in their scenes. Travis explains that he spends time connecting with other actors to make the relationships seem real. He loves to find friends and mentors in his set family at each project. As far as future writing or directing, Travis follows the advice given to him by Mario Van Peebles, who told him to learn to be his own boss. This means learning to write, direct, and produce so that he can work for himself and have more control over his career. TWEET: Learn to be your own boss. @traviswolfejr #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Keep going. I’m always inspired by people who are the best at what they do. The ones who break the limits of what has been done before. The ones who are willing to do what it takes to achieve greatness in the thing they are passionate about. Today’s guest fits all of the above qualities and more. I had an incredible time meeting and connecting with the legendary extreme action sports champion Travis Pastrana. If you’ve watched the X Games, Motocross, or Rally Car Racing, you already know who I’m talking about. But in case you haven’t, he has won medals in all of these sports. Travis is one of the founding members of the stunt show Nitro Circus, which is a mindblowing action sports show that has been touring the country for years. He has been the first to pull off many of the craziest stunts and now focuses on exploring new ones to teach to the upcoming generation of stunt performers. All of this is very cool (just check out the video of his top 10 stunts below). But what is even cooler about Travis is how grounded he is in his work. His passion for it. His family. He has gone through enough pain and loss to turn most people off of this sport. But it only fuels him to keep going. And that is passion I admire. I can’t wait for you to be inspired by his wisdom and perspective on living the life he loves in Episode 368 with Travis Pastrana. Some Questions I Ask:How do you navigate your career after losing a close friend to this sport? (14:58)Was there ever a stunt where you thought you weren’t going to make it? (17:17)How do you get past fear to get into flow? (42:25)What drives you today? For the longest time I have poo-pooed the idea of travel hacking. For me, it meant you were supposed to go out and sign up for as many travel credit cards as possible. Then, you would try to spend as much as money on each credit card to “chase the rewards.” I remember thinking: Wow! I can spend $40,000 on a credit card and score a free plane ticket - no thanks! Then I met Travis. Side note: I met Travis at a little dive bar in Philadelphia last summer through a mutual friend. When he first told me he was a travel hacker...well... I wasn’t overly impressed. Until now! You see, Travis didn’t get his first credit card until he was 28-years-old and to this day he WILL NOT carry a balance or pay a dime of credit card interest. And yet, he and his family of 3 still travels all over the world on $5 plane tickets, cheap apartment rentals, and some other little-known travel hacks that completely took me by surprise. Here’s what we have in store for you: • How to get the absolute cheapest plane tickets • Where to look for cheap flights • How to get notified about the little-known flight hacks • How to find cheap apartment rentals • A secret they use for plane tickets using Wikipedia! • How they stayed in a 5-bedroom mansion in Breckenridge with access to the BMW and Hot Tub for free • What Travis recommends as everyone's first step to travel hacking BONUS: He has a free webinar on Black Friday 2018 to show you the top tips to travel hacking. Having the Mindset to Endure to the End In this episode, Jon and Travis Macy discuss: How to start having the right mindset and keeping that mindset. Fighting through fatigue and having endurance through your business and as an athlete. How consistency relates with success. Making time for things in your life that you want to accomplish without missing out on important events. What Travis does and the tools to do it yourself. Key Takeaways: Make sure that you outline the challenges that you might face when setting a goal. Think about the what and why of your thoughts. Decide what you value and have that direct what you do with your time. Do the small things every day that it takes to get to the larger goal. “If you have a mindset of abundance rather than a mindset of scarcity that alone is going to make such a difference in how you view the day." - Travis Macy Connect with Travis Macy : Twitter: @travismacy Facebook: travismacy Email: travis.macy@gmail.com LinkedIn: travismacy Get Jon's book "The Think Big Movement: Grow your business big. DON'T GIVE UP BEFORE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE. Have you ever wondered how people can be so great in the moment? How they can go with the flow so perfectly and know exactly how to maneuver a situation in their favor? Maybe it’s the ability to land that dream client who seemed unattainable. Maybe it’s being able to nail that trick on a skateboard, just when it seems like things are about to go wrong. In any case, the secret to your success and ability to go with the flow stems from the same place: failure. We all fear failure, but in the end it’s what makes us stronger. It means we’ve been testing the space, and working towards our dreams. To go into this more I wanted to post a clip of a previous episode with Travis Pastrana. In this episode… Travis Lee has grown up seeing the power of marketing, literally. His father was involved in mastermind groups with the likes of Bill Glazer and Frank Kern and Travis learned early on how effective a professional and consistent direct mail campaign could be. After he graduated from college his father insisted that he listen to a set of tapes that set him on his way to becoming a direct response marketer in his own right. Teaming up together, Lee and his Dad have created www.3DMailResults.com, a direct mail company that does things a bit out of the ordinary along the lines of what Travis saw from his Dad’s friends in the past. 3D Mail Results sends out what was once called “lumpy mail” - envelopes with small sized items inside that attract attention and spark curiosity. On this episode of Inspired Insider you’re going to hear a wealth of success stories and ideas for how these kinds of creative mailings can increase business in incredible ways. The allure of “lumpy mailers.” Imagine pulling up to the mailbox and grabbing the pile of envelopes that are typically there. As you do, you feel something hard and, well, lumpy in the stack. Your mind immediately begins to wonder what was sent to you that feels to big and unusual. That’s the power of 3D Mail Results’ marketing methods. The unusual shape and feel of the items they send out start their magic by piquing curiosity, increasing the open rate of their marketing messages dramatically. Receiving a 3D Marketing Results package goes beyond curiosity… it also lodges in your memory because of the creative angle of the marketing message coupled with the small item that goes along with it - a boomerang for a “we’d like you to come back” appeal, a pill bottle for accompanying a “aren’t you sick of high insurance rates” advertisement. You get the idea? This creative brand of marketing can increase your business significantly, so make sure you listen to the ways Travis Lee’s company could make it happen for you. If you need a boost to your bottom line this creative method of direct mail marketing could get you more return clients and new customers than any other, the stats prove it. Travis Walton had one of the most famous and fascinating alleged UFO abduction experiences. It was documented in the movie Fire in the Sky. However, while the movie did portray much of the events surrounding the encounter accurately, the events onboard the spacecraft were completely fictional. What Travis really remembers is much more fascinating. You can listen to us talk about the events in our last show with Travis. However, this time, Travis and I talk about his upcoming conference to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the event. It includes a sky watch at the location the sighting took place. We also talk about our appearance together on Keeping up with the Kardashians. We went with the Kardashian/Jenner clan to Area 51. For more about Travis' conference visit www.SkyfireSummit.com.
