Skånsk Pilsner (5% ABV) Vs. Guinness Extra Stout (5% ABV)
Happy St. Patrick's Day, or is that St. Paddy's Day? Either way, when it comes to beer and brewing, perhaps the real Saint we should be admiring could very well be St. Brigid (more on that in this episode). Speaking of episodes, we start this shindig off by tasting some excellent Irish/St. Paddy's themed beers and then give it a lash to discuss the history of the Irish Pub, learning about Ireland's patron saints, Publicans, Barmen, Alewives, Spirit Grocers, SheBeens, Patrick Cavanaugh and Brendan Behan “dog days to drink” legend, and the lot that brought us into the era of the Public Houses we so fondly adore and frequently adjourn to. As for theater on the table, we start with Mike's home brewed Red Ale, a tasty, roasty, clean, easy drinker, if there ever was one ;) that finished off fast (1.5 weeks) at 4.5 ABV. We also sip on Urban Forest Landmire Spring, a zest black IPA that warms the soul. Then on to more traditional fermentations from Smithwick Red Ale (the most consumed ale in Ireland…ever!) and Guinness Extra Stout, a beer that some have called the perfect balance of bitter and sweet, smooth and dry with a yummy creamy head, first brewed in 1821. Happy listening…we're off to the pub! While we'll miss out on the ultimate Irish authenticity on this March 17, we have a nice selection of traditional ale houses to drink until we're gilded green with envy. Special shout out to our sponsors, especially the boys at Pig Minds Brewing who are always brewing for perfection! If you're seeking a hard-to-find commercial craft beer, wine or spirits to take home or as a gift, then stop in to Artale & Co, Anthony and Aaron have plenty of great ideas. When you are ready to start a new indoor gardening project stop in to 815 Gardens, Bob will be happy to help. And of course, the aforementioned Urban Forest, hard at work making awesome moments for your taste buds. Tell them that HomeBrew Rockstars sent ya. Hey Folks so we're talking about one of my Favourite beer styles the Baltic Porter. Porter is a style of beer that was developed in London, England, in the early 18th century. It was well-hopped and dark in appearance owing to the use of brown malt. The name originated from its popularity with street and river porters. The popularity of porter was significant, and it became the first beer style to be brewed across the world, and production had commenced in Ireland, North America, Sweden, and Russia by the end of the 18th century. The history of stout and porter are intertwined. The name "stout", used for a dark beer, came about because strong porters were marketed as "stout porter", later was shortened to just stout. Guinness Extra Stout was originally called "Extra Superior Porter" and was not given the name "Extra Stout" until 1840.Today, the terms are used by different breweries almost interchangeably to describe dark beers, and the two styles have more in common than in distinction. Baltic porter is a version of imperial stout that originated in the Baltic region in the 19th century. Imperial stouts exported from Britain in the 18th century were popular in the countries around the Baltic Sea, and were recreated locally using local ingredients and brewing traditions. Early versions were warm fermented until the late 19th century, when many breweries began to brew their porter with cool fermentation, so are technically lagers. Baltic porters typically have a minimum gravity of 18° plato and a high alcohol content, even over 10% ABV. They are produced in Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Denmark, Sweden, and the United States. Baltic porter is a specialty of many Polish breweries, with the country's oldest being produced by Żywiec in 1881.Finland's Sinebrychoff has been brewing Baltic porters in Helsinki since the 1860s,while Estonia's Põhjala is a newcomer specialising in barrel-aged porters. In Denmark the word "porter" is synonymous with "imperial stout"and Wiibroe's Baltic porter (now brewed by Carlsberg) is known by both names. Porter was brewed in Germany from 1853 until 1990, when production ceased in East Germany after reunification. In 1998, the Hoepfner brewery of Karlsruhe resumed production of an old recipe. It was followed by other brewers such as Neuzeller Kloster Brewery and Bergquell Brewery who brew an 8% abv Baltic porter. Baltic Porter Day, started in Poland in 2016 by Marcin Chmielarz, is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of January. https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/1193996/baltic-porter https://escarpmentlabs.com https://urbanbarrelcompany.com

Welcome back to Conversation on Tap! In this episode, Jose continues his discussion with Sam Rocha, an associate professor at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada, to discuss socialism and his recent debate against Trent Horn on Catholic Answers. For the intro and outro, Jose is joined by his wife Christina. But, first, Jose and Christina chat about the delicious Guinness Extra Stout that they yummily swallowed. For their FRED Talks, Jose talked about the hideous Abby Johnson video entitled "My Biracial Boy," and Christina talked about how she has learned so much from Emmanuel Acho's YouTube series "Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man." In the main segment, Jose is joined by Sam Rocha to discuss socialism. The conversation begins with a discussion about capitalism; Sam is quite charitable with his capitalist interlocutors. We then move into a discussion about how the Affordable Care Act-- also known as ObamaCare-- isn't actually socialism at all, despite critics' claims. This moves into a discussion about Black Lives Matter and racism in our country. We also take some time to discuss how socialism actually plays out in capitalist countries around the world through welfare programs and social safety nets. Jose then asks Sam if the term "socialist" is even worth using in our time due to the negative connotations Americans reflexively hold. As we began to wind down the conversation, Sam reflected on the Magnificat, Mary's radical prayer of confronting power in this world. The episode ended with a beautiful and deeply personal connection for Sam to a previous debate he participated in at Wabash College. This was definitely an awesome discussion, in its truest sense. We are also grateful that Sam gave us permission to use his music in this episode and in the previous episode, too. Check out his YouTube Channel for more of his great music! In the final segment, Jose and Christina talked about how they have been watching the Netflix show The Floor is Lava. It is a fun, family show! That's all for this week, but keep up with the Podcast by following us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Cheers!
