In the summer of 2024, 2 separate source to sea trips ran the lengths of the Sandy and Kennebec in Maine. International Women's Day is March 8, and we're celebrating it like a girl, beer in hand, mountain bikes in between our legs. Ok, maybe not riding while drinking, but you get the picture. We're doing what we do best, and Samantha Danen from Third Space Brewing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is doing what she does best.Meet Samantha Danen from Third Space BrewingSamantha Danen, Head Production Manager, and the rest of the team at Third Space Brewing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are celebrating by teaming up with the Pink Boots Society for its annual collab brew day and beer release of Like a Girl.Sam started homebrewing in college and fell in love with all aspects of beer. As a art history major, it was easy for her to see the art of brewing. She could compare art and beer together. Beer being its own medium.Starting at Third Space in 2020, Sam worked her way up from brewers assistant to where she is now, always appreciating beer and brewing as an art form and a collaborative and welcoming space. Not only is this Sam's story, this is a story for women in the brewing industry. A story about collaboration bringing women back into the fold of a story they began hundreds of years ago. About Pink Boots Society and Pink Boots Collab Brew DaySam's recipe for the Pink Boots Collab Brew Day, Like a Girl, resonates that belief in all aspects of the process. As a former Pink Boots Chapter Head and current member, Sam loves bringing women together to brew beer. It's educational, but more importantly, it builds community and gives women a voice in a male dominated industry.Pink Boots Society ensures that women have a place in craft beer today. An international organization for women and nonbinary individuals who work in the fermented beverage industry, Pink Boots Society provides educational opportunities for their members. Their biggest fundraiser is their collaborative brew day centered around International Women's Day.Drink Like a GirlLet's continue the conversation. Talk about women in brewing. Use you voice. Ask questions. Be curious. And if you love beer, by all means, drink Like a Girl. After all, beer is actually a girly drink. Thanks, Alewives! You've paved the path, and we're finally getting back on it. Welcome back for Season Twelve! We are so happy to have you here! This week on Hashtag History, Leah is taking over the episode and discussing witches (just in time for the Halloween season)! We take a dive into the idea that witches (as we know and picture them today) actually derive from depictions and stigmas surrounding early women beer brewers! We cover what early female brewers looked like and how depictions of them and the tools they used eventually went on to be correlated with witchcraft. It's important to note that this idea that we embark on isn't a 100% accepted theory across the board amongst Historians so we make sure to call out some of the opposing arguments throughout the episode. Their role as family and village brewer lasted for hundreds of thousands of years--through the earliest days of Mesopotamian civilization, the reign of Cleopatra, the witch trials of Medieval and Renaissance Europe, and the settling of colonial America. A Woman's Place Is in the Brewhouse celebrates the contributions and influence of female brewers and explores the forces that have erased them from the brewing world. It's a history that's simultaneously inspiring and demeaning. Wherever and whenever the cottage brewing industry has grown profitable, politics, religion, and capitalism have grown greedy. On a macro scale, men have repeatedly seized control and forced women out of the business. Other times, women have simply lost the minimal independence, respect, and economic power brewing brought them. But there are more breweries now than at any time in American history and today women serve as founder, CEO, or head brewer at more than one thousand of them. As women continue to work hard for equal treatment and recognition in the industry, author Tara Nurin shows readers that women have been--and are once again becoming--relevant in the brewing world.  Rebekah Buchanan is a Professor of English and Director of English Education at Western Illinois University. Producer/Host: Natalie Springuel Coastal Conversations: Conversations with people who live, work, and play on the Maine coast, hosted by the University of Maine Sea Grant Program. This episode: Many people in Maine have heard of Atlantic Salmon and Alewives, but do you know about Rainbow Smelt? These migratory sea-run fish may be swimming up your backyard streams right now! And historically, these fish have all featured in the lives of Maine residents for sustenance, income, and recreation. Smelt and tomcod populations are believed to have declined in recent decades. That's the bad news. The good news is that the restoration of salmon and alewife habitat benefits all members of the sea-run fish family. Our show today features a compendium of smelt stories plus a few about tomcod and other sea-run fish, from interviews conducted over the course of the last year in an effort to document the traditional ecological knowledge of people who harvest, interact with, and observe sea-run fish. So make a note to tune in Friday afternoon, May 27, 2022, from 4-5 OM, when this month's Coastal Conversation features stories and voices talking about seasons of change for Maine's sea-run fish. Our conversation focuses on herstory - history considered or presented from a feminist viewpoint or with special attention to the experience of women - and forces such as archival silences and historiographical biases that have erased women's voices from brewing history. A Woman's Place Is In the Brewhouse is an important addition to the collective body of beer history on account of both its well-researched historical focus, and the social questions it raises. Happy St. Patrick's Day, or is that St. Paddy's Day? Either way, when it comes to beer and brewing, perhaps the real Saint we should be admiring could very well be St. Brigid (more on that in this episode). Speaking of episodes, we start this shindig off by tasting some excellent Irish/St. Paddy's themed beers and then give it a lash to discuss the history of the Irish Pub, learning about Ireland's patron saints, Publicans, Barmen, Alewives, Spirit Grocers, SheBeens, Patrick Cavanaugh and Brendan Behan “dog days to drink” legend, and the lot that brought us into the era of the Public Houses we so fondly adore and frequently adjourn to. As for theater on the table, we start with Mike's home brewed Red Ale, a tasty, roasty, clean, easy drinker, if there ever was one ;) that finished off fast (1.5 weeks) at 4.5 ABV. We also sip on Urban Forest Landmire Spring, a zest black IPA that warms the soul. Then on to more traditional fermentations from Smithwick Red Ale (the most consumed ale in Ireland…ever!) and Guinness Extra Stout, a beer that some have called the perfect balance of bitter and sweet, smooth and dry with a yummy creamy head, first brewed in 1821. Happy listening…we're off to the pub! While we'll miss out on the ultimate Irish authenticity on this March 17, we have a nice selection of traditional ale houses to drink until we're gilded green with envy.  Special shout out to our sponsors, especially the boys at Pig Minds Brewing who are always brewing for perfection! It's exciting for people to learn this history about women in brewing in Medieval Europe and feel like they're part of a story, but I think it's important that we're telling the right story and the story that's based on primary-source information. In recent years, associations have been made between depictions of Medieval alewives and our modern day image of witches, from pointy hats to cauldrons, and black cats to broom sticks. The story gets passed around by barstool historians claiming modern iconography of witches comes from these Medieval alewives, and as often happens, these stories have morphed into accepted popular history. But is there any truth to these stories? Was there ever a connection between female brewers and witchcraft, and how did this story get started? In today's episode, we talk with Dr. Christina Wade, a beer writer and historian who helps us unpack the complicated mythology and iconography surrounding witches and brewing, and separate romance from reality when it comes to this spellbinding chapter of beer history.Christina is one of the hosts of the excellent The Beer Ladies Podcast, which is available on all major podcast platforms. Christina also runs Braciatrix, a website devoted to the history of women in brewing. You can find articles on her site that go into greater detail on many of the topics we discuss in this episode. In the episode, the following article by Beth Demmon for Good Beer Hunting is discussed:Witch (Craft) Beer—How a New Wave of Brewers Are Incorporating Magic into BeerThe beer Christina mentioned in the episode was Trouble Brewing Pumpkin Brew. The music for this episode was sampled from an instrumental version of the song “Valentine” written and performed by indie folk musician Anna ps from her 2016 album Umbrella. You can find out more about Anna at her website.Dr. Christina Wade is a historian and archaeologist currently writing a book about the beer history of Ireland from medieval to modern craft beer. One of the biggest stories of the year has unquestionably been the mistreatment of women in the beer industry. Long simmering just below the surface, the issue rose to the surface recently on Instagram and took off from there. The erasure of women in the retelling of craft beer's story and history has also long been a problem. And it's one that my guest today has been focused on fixing. My guest today is Tara Nurin, a longtime beer writer and the author of the upcoming book, “A Woman's Place Is in the Brewhouse A Forgotten History of Alewives, Brewsters, Witches and CEOs.” A former television writer and reporter, Tara transitioned to writing about beer and travel when she saw both on the rise. She now works as a freelance writer who covers lifestyle trends with a focus on craft beer, alcohol, and culinary tourism. She is perhaps best known as the beer and spirits contributor to Forbes. I've always been curious about how Forbes.com works and Tara goes into substantial detail about the inner workings of that relationship. As a writer, and hopefully for those in the audience, it's a fascinating listen and gives insight into what the Forbes name really means. A self-described “lifelong feminist,” Tara's work has often focused on women in the craft beer industry. She candidly acknowledges having fallen into many of the traps that befall reporters covering women in brewing, like asking them what it was like to be a female brewer in a male dominated industry. After getting push back from female brewers, Tara soon realized the subject was far deeper and nuanced. In addition to her writing, Tara also does marketing for several beverage related companies, and we talk about the tricky ethics of balancing both sides. And for those who think this episode is only about wonky journalism talk, think again. Tara's soon to be released book is an enjoyable read that uncovers the stories and forgotten history of some of the women founders in the early days of craft beer. Here is my candid and often opinionated discussion with beer writer and author Tara Nurin. For more information on the Beer Edge Podcast, follow us on Twitter @thebeeredge. Producer/Host: Amy Browne Production Assistance: John Greenman Today we have a special report on the proposal to remove the Orland Dam – a decision that regardless of which way it goes, will likely have impacts not only on that town, but on surrounding areas as well. Orland took over ownership of the dam from Verso in 2011. The dam has been found to have serious structural issues, has failed in the past, and currently salt water flows over the top periodically. It also blocks fish passage and the existing fish ladders are considered inadequate. The town will be voting on June 14th on a ballot question that gives 2 options: Keep the dam and have the town foot any associated costs, or move forward toward removal of the dam by working with NOAA fisheries and the Nature Conservancy to acquire available funding for removal of the dam and ancillary costs. NOAA is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, one of the major forces behind the Penobscot River Restoration project. In 2014 they designated the Penobscot River Watershed as a “Habitat Focus Area” — one of just two on the east coast –citing the environmental, cultural and recreational significance of New England's second largest river, which provides habitat to many migratory fish species, including 3 that are listed as endangered. Those who oppose removing the dam are concerned about the impact on water front views, which would start changing with the tides, potential impacts of salt water on wells and bridges, and the need to find a new source of water for fire fighting (as the impoundment created by the dam has been used for that purpose)—and whether the grants the town might receive would cover those costs. The need to coordinate dam removal with the clean up of mercury in the river so as to not further mobilize a mercury hotspot just below the dam is also a concern. At a well-attended forum Wednesday night in Orland, experts who have been studying the issues and agencies offering funding for the project, provided updates and heard comments and questions from the public. The entire presentation last more than 2 hours. This morning we hear from some of the panelists and a few of the public comments. NOTE: The link to the full meeting (2+ hours in length) is also posted below. The 1st link is for today’s program, the second is the full meeting. Host: Ron Beard, University of Maine Cooperative Extension Studio Engineer: Joel Mann Issue: Community concerns and opportunities Program Topic: The Union River, Fish and Dams Key Discussion Points: 1. The Watershed What is the watershed of the Union River, and how does it serve/impact the region? What do we know about fish in the Union River—historical and present? First dams for sawmills and other industry, later for electric power 2. Current dams and purposes ? What is the current ownership of the dams on the Union River… what do we know about Brookfield Power and its economic goals for the Union River? ? How much power is being generated on the Union River, and how important is this as part of our overall energy mix in Maine and the overall power grid? ? How important is the Ellsworth Dam to current flood control? 3. Alewives From colonial times, alewives were allowed to be managed at the local level… what measures do the City of Ellsworth and it's partners use to manage alewife populations and catch… explain the trap and truck process, who is involved, what is accomplished, what are the drawbacks? What is the significance of Alewives to the Passamaquoddy people, and importance of removing barriers, on the St Croix river and elsewhere… what work/fisheries research on behalf of the Passamaquoddy Tribe connects with the Downeast Fisheries Partnership and others 4. Relicensing ? What agencies have oversight of dams and what do they monitor? ? What specifically is the role of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and what is the process they are using to consider a request to relicense the dam on the Union River for electrical power generation? ? Besides the current owner, Brookfield Power, who else is involved in relicensing? ? What factors are likely to be considered in the relicensing process? (power generation, fish passage, environmental impacts, property values on river and lakes?) ? What are some of the likely points of contention, around fish passage up and down the river, around water levels in Graham Lake, etc. 5. Wrapping Up ? What is the process going forward and how can citizens learn more? ? What hopes do you have for what happens on and around the Union River as a result of the relicensing process? Guests: Dwayne Shaw, Downeast Salmon Federation Morris Lambden, Union Salmon Association Anne Hayden, Downeast Fisheries Partnership Edward Basset, Sipayik Environmental Department Pleasant Point Reservation, Alewives, eels, salmon, other species?
