Check the website here: http://enlites.com/ Dr. David Benatar is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa. He is best known for his advocacy of anti-natalism in his book Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence, in which he argues that coming into existence is a serious harm, regardless of the feelings of the existing being once brought into existence, and that, as a consequence, it is always morally wrong to create more sentient beings. His latest book is Very Practical Ethics: Engaging Everyday Moral Questions. In this episode, we focus on Very Practical Ethics. We start by discussing what practical ethics is, and then explore topics like sex, the environment, smoking, giving aid, and language.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Original arrangement The Beatles. This version's lyrics by Matti Häyry, inspired by David Benatar's seminal book Better Never to Have Been 2006, and performance by Matti Häyry. A REAL NOWHERE MAN Better never to have been This your parents didn’t see So they sent you down that road of misery Failed to grasp asymmetry Thought too much of quality Couldn’t see that all they had was fantasy Sleep is good, calm is better (No life) But the best would be never (All right) To have been brought into this sadness at all They were blind as they could be With their dreams of harmony Pollyanna be their guide to destiny Sleep is good, calm is better (No life) But the best would be never (All right) To have been brought into this badness at all Nonexistence, let me stay Can there be a brighter day? Without you and me and without anyone Sleep is good, calm is better (No life) But the best would be never (All right) To have been brought into this madness at all Better never to have been Quality, asymmetry Better never to have been at all Better never to have been at all Dedicated to Amanda Sukenick on her the-meaning-of-life-according-to-the-hitchhikers-guide-to-the-galaxy better-never-to-have-been anniversary.

Until recently, David Benatar was a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, where he also directed the university's Bioethics Centre. He is widely known for his controversial and challenging views on topics like antinatalism—captured in his groundbreaking book Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence—which argues that bringing new life into the world inevitably leads to suffering. In addition to his work on antinatalism, Benatar has written extensively on practical ethics, morality, and human suffering, and his most recent contributions to Quillette have focused on the conflict in Israel and rising antisemitism in the Anglosphere. In this conversation, we reflect on the anniversary of 7 October and the ethical questions it raises. The conversation concludes with a discussion of his new book, Very Practical Ethics: Engaging Everyday Moral Questions (2024). Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Dr. David Benatar is a very special guest of mine indeed. A philosophical heavyweight renowned for his work worldwide, Dr. Benatar coined the term 'anti-natalism' and wrote the infamous anti-natalist book 'Better Never to Have Been', which puts forward the argument that it is bad that sentient life comes into existence and that we ought not procreate. Dr. Benatar's work has shaped my life immensely. In this episode, I put to Dr. Benatar (a vegan anti-natalist himself) the idea put forward by NATALIST vegans (i.e. vegans who believe procreation is NOT immoral) that anti-natalism could actually HARM animals in the long run. We discuss whether anti-natalist vegans should have a duty to clear the most land space to prevent creation of new life; whether veganism's environmental "benefits" are indeed a benefit; the contentious killing predators debate; and whether humans need to be around to help mitigate the horrendous issue of wild animal suffering. Plus, Dr. Benatar gives his opinion on what vegans with carnivorous animals such as snakes in their care ought to do with the animal.

The Middle Daughter (Dzanc Books, 2023) by Chika Unigwe opens with a happy, well-to-do family living in a guarded community in Nigeria. The loving father owns a business, the formidable mother is a doctor, one daughter is at university in America and the other daughters are in private school. The story is told from the perspective of the youngest daughter, Ugo, and middle daughter, Nani, whose life in thrown off balance by the death of her father. A single bad choice leads to her giving up a college education in America to become a browbeaten mother of three married to an abusive husband who keeps her locked in a tiny apartment, chops off her hair and buys her ugly polyester dresses. Like Persephone in the underworld, she's unable to see or contact her powerful mother. When she has an opportunity to escape, she needs strength and courage that she isn't sure she possesses. Chika Unigwe was born and raised in Enugu, a hilly city in the southeast of Nigeria. Also known as the coal city because it was a significant coal mining city in the 1900s, Enugu literally means "top of the hill." In elementary school, Chika was enamored with the magazine Highlights for Children that a friend brought to school. Her parents, who encouraged reading, took out a subscription for her and her sister, and Unigwe spent years sending in stories and poems to the magazine, with no success. At the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where she earned her BA in English, she met the man who would become her husband. Right after her final exams, they moved to Belgium, and her family relocated to the United States in 2013. Unigwe has won several awards for her writing and was most recently knighted into the Order of the Crown by the Belgian government for her contributions to culture (in literature). Her previous works include On Black Sisters Street (which won the $100,000 Nigeria Prize for Literature), Night Dancer, and a collection of short stories, Better Never than Late. Her works have appeared in The New York Times, Guernica, Aeon, The Kenyon Review, Wasafiri, Georgia Review and others. She teaches at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, and lives in Atlanta with her family and two spoilt dogs. Learn more about your ad choices. According to the Center for American Progress at least one and four American children and adolescence will experience some sort of adversity during the course of their lifetime Which undoubtedly increases with age. It more than doubles in infants younger than one this stands at approximately 5% and for children older than two it comes in at roughly 11%. Jack Sernett is a keynote speaker, personal trainer, and mental health coach based out of Kansas City, Missouri. Jack has been able to overcome and grow from many different obstacles throughout his life. He truly believes these obstacles have been put in his life so he can learn how to “grow” instead of “go” through adversity. And now, it is his life's work to teach as many people as possible how to achieve post-traumatic growth and self-love. Growing up in Kansas City, Jack thrived both academically and athletically. He was a straight-A student and 1st Team All-State athlete in high school. After high school, Jack went on to attend San Diego State University in the honors program. During his college years, Jack spent time as a competitive CrossFit athlete and later began his speaking and coaching career. However, in late 2017 all of that was put on hold, and he would spend the better part of the next 3 years in the hospital battling a chronic illness. Eventually, Jack returned to Kansas City and began working full-time again as a keynote speaker, personal trainer, and mental health coach. He joined me this week to tell me more. His new book is The Fall of the University of Cape Town: Africa's Leading University in Decline. In this episode, we focus on The Fall of the University of Cape Town. Dr. Benatar gives us a brief overview of how the decline at UCT started, how it was dealt with, and the demands made by the students. We talk about terms like “transformation” and “decolonization” of the curricula. We discuss the role of university, and academic freedom. We talk about racial issues in South Africa, affirmative action, cancel culture, and identity politics. Is it really better to exist than not exist? With rampant climate destruction, income inequality, and suffering in the world, some have begun to question whether it is ethical to create new life, knowing it will suffer. In episode 46 of Overthink, Ellie and David explore the intellectual tradition of anti-natalism. Why did Schopenhauer think that life was ultimately dominated by suffering, and why did Nietzsche think he was so wrong? How has anti-natalism emerged out of the trend of pessimism, and how can we be optimistic about generating new life in what can at times be such a hard world?Works DiscussedSoul (2020)Capernaum (2018)David Benatar, Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into ExistenceArthur Schopenhauer, The World as Will and RepresentationElizabeth Harman, “Critical Study of David Benatar. Lawyer Lies on Application for Malpractice Insurance - Policy Rescinded Travelers issued a Lawyers Professional Liability Insurance Policy to Grimmer, Davis, Revelli & Ballif (“Grimmer Davis”). Grimmer Davis is a law firm with its principal place of business in Lehi, Utah. Matthew Grimmer was the sole shareholder of Grimmer Davis and had general managing and governing responsibilities at the firm. Grimmer is a licensed attorney with knowledge of the rules of professional conduct. Jacob Davis was an employee of Grimmer Davis. Davis is also an attorney with knowledge of the rules of professional conduct. Defendant Grimmer and Associates, P.C. (“G&A”) is a law firm with its principal place of business in Lehi, Utah. G&A is located in the same office as Grimmer Davis. Grimmer is the sole shareholder of G&A, and Davis was also employed at G&A. Grimmer made false statements in the application and in Travelers Casualty And Surety Company Of America v. Grimmer Davis Revelli & Ballif, P.C., et al., No. 2:19-cv-597-DAK-JCB, United States District Court, D. Utah (November 10, 2021) Travelers sought to rescind the policy. BACKGROUND Georgia Noel Inman and her twin brother Walker Patterson Inman III (“Patterson”) were clients or former clients of G&A and its attorneys. Patterson was also a client or former client of Grimmer Davis and its attorneys. Georgia and Patterson's father died when they were twelve years old. Their stepmother served as their deceased father's personal representative and successor trustee. However, there were allegations that she was pilfering or hiding assets from the estate. In 2013, Grimmer and G&A began representing Georgia and Patterson in the probate dispute with their stepmother in an action in Wyoming. On June 27, 2018, Georgia filed a motion to disqualify the firm Grimmer Davis and the individual attorneys Grimmer and Davis from representing Patterson in the consolidated trust cases pending in Wyoming, citing various conflicts of interest and breaches of professional duties against Grimmer, Davis, G&A and Grimmer Davis (“Grimmer Parties”). In this disqualification motion, Georgia asserted that the Grimmer Parties advocated for positions that favored Patterson and were adverse to her interests. The motion states that “Georgia potentially has claims against parties and lawyers in this litigation” and “Georgia now has viable claims, which she will be bringing to undo both the Greenfield Plantation sale and the assignment of claims”-two transactions involving Georgia, Patterson, and Grimmer. ZALMA OPINION A lawyer should know that insurance is a contract of utmost good faith where neither party may do anything to deprive the other of the benefits of the contract. In this case, a lawyer not only failed to act in good faith when applying for malpractice insurance, he acted badly by misrepresenting to the insurer that he knew of no potential action against him or his firms when, in fact, he had been so advised by Georgia and her counsel and by orders of two different courts. Rescission was the only appropriate action available to the Travelers. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/barry-zalma/support

Today's episode is all about existence and pain (suffering). Philosophers like David Benatar have argued that coming into existence is always going to be a harm. Life is filled with pleasures, but the pains are always going to be much worse. If this is the case, are we always doing something morally wrong when we bring new people into the world? Can we logically say that we are harming people by creating them or harming future possible people that could be created? David and I try to tackle these problems while still holding on to our sanity.

In a rare turn of events, it just so happened that one or perhaps both of your charming co-hosts spewed a bit of nonsense about Derek Parfit in a previous episode, and we had to bring in a heavy hitter to sort us out. Today we're joined by friend of the podcast Mr. Dan Hageman, immuno-oncologist by day and meta-ethicist by night, who gently takes us to task for misunderstanding Parfit and the role of ethical theorizing, and for ignoring the suffering of pigeons. He would like to note that the IPAs are to blame for any and all errors/misapprehensions made during his lively discussion with epic friends and podcast hosts, Ben and Vaden. We move on, not to home building, but cybersecurity, with a backdoor disguised as a Typo fix. In the days of the George Floyd murder trial in the US, we find one legal reviewer in the UK that is of the opinion that people should get anywhere from 2 months to 5 years for not providing their phone password to the police. We get to the bottom of STIR/SHAKEN and finally, we see the results of a privacy and security survey of over fifteen thousand people around the world. We think the results will surprise you! And with that, the moment, you own it, you better never let it go. Find the full transcript for this podcast at discuss.daml.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rps5/message

Colin McEnroe Show alum Chion Wolf has a new show: Audacious. Hear this guest episode from her series! Last year, a 28-year-old guy in Mumbai tried to sue his parents -- who are both lawyers -- for having brought him into the world. He claims his parents didn’t get his consent to live. In addition to being a very bold person, he is an anti-natalist. That is, he believes that it is morally wrong to bring sentient life into this world -- no matter how charmed or how troubled that life is -- and that humanity should stop reproducing, full stop. Anti-natalism is not a novel concept. You can trace it as far back as some interpretations of the teachings of Buddah, and in ancient religious sects. Nowadays, the subreddit dedicated to anti-natalism has 70,000 members, and there are 15,000 people following the Facebook group the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement. You'll hear from one of its leaders in this show. The screenwriter for the HBO series True Detective says that that the antinatalist beliefs of one of the main characters was inspired by the book Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming Into Existence by the philosopher David Benatar. You'll meet him too and learn a lot more about the belief that this world would have been better had none us been here in the first place. CHIKA UNIGWE, PhD Chika Unigwe, PhD, is the author of four novels, including the acclaimed On Black Sisters' Street (Jonathan Cape, 2009), and winner of the $100,000 Nigeria Prize for Literature (2012). In 2014 she was included in the Hay Festival Africa39 list of most promising African writers under the age of 40. In 2016, Unigwe was appointed as the Bonderman Professor for Creative Writing at Brown University in Rhode Island, and was a judge of the Man Booker International Prize in 2017.   BETTER NEVER THAN LATE BOOK A timely collection of interconnected stories about the experiences of Nigerian migrants making their way in Europe, centred around Prosperous and her husband Agu, and the various visitors who gather at their apartment in Belgium. These ten tales explore their struggles and triumphs, from unhappy marriages (of convenience or otherwise), and the pain of homesickness and loneliness, to dealing with religious fervour and exorcism. Award-winning author Chika Unigwe provides a very human slant on the issues of migration so prevalent in contemporary discourse, writing with humour and acute observation.

Is dividing people up by their generation (Baby Boomer, Gen X, Millennial, etc.) unhelpful and even harmful? Is it a form of ageism, along the same lines as racism or sexism? What is the coming crisis of our time, and have we already arrived? And is it ethically justified to have children in this world in flux? Ben is in Kingston for a fascinating conversation about all this and more with philosopher Christine Overall of Queen's University. About the Guest Christine Overall's teaching, supervision, research, and publications are in the areas of feminist philosophy, applied ethics (including bioethics), philosophy of religion, and philosophy of education. She is the editor of four books and the author of six. Her book, Aging, Death, and Human Longevity: A Philosophical Inquiry (University of California Press, 2003), won both the Canadian Philosophical Association’s Book Prize and the Royal Society of Canada’s Abbyann Lynch Medal in Bioethics. Her book, Why Have Children? The Ethical Debate,  was published by MIT Press in 2012.  She also recently edited Dying in Public: Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer, by Sue Hendler (Michael Grass House, 2012). He's also the author of books like The Second Sexism: Discrimination Against Men and Boys (2012), and The Human Predicament: A Candid Guide to Life's Biggest Questions (2017). In this episode, we focus on The Second Sexism. We first go through some concepts, definition and clarifications. Dr. Benatar distinguishes between the first and the second sexism, and also between disadvantages and wrongful discrimination. We then address several domains where there is wrongful discrimination against men, like violence and sexual assault, family laws, education, military service, imprisonment and crime sentences, and circumcision. We also discuss social stereotypes about men and women, and where behavioral differences come from, and if they are ethically relevant. We also talk about how misleading the term “gender violence” is, and in any ways some arguments put forth by feminists against the second sexism are wrong. We specifically address the arguments Dr. Benatar names as the inversion argument, the costs-of-dominance argument, and the distraction argument. Finally, we ask if feminism can discriminate against men, or at least exacerbate some of the already existent discrimination, and also what we could do to tackle the second sexism, at a political, social, and cultural level. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, PER HELGE LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, ANTÓNIO CUNHA, JERRY MULLER, FRANCIS FORDE, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, YEVHEN BODRENKO, ADAM BJERRE, AIRES ALMEIDA, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, BO WINEGARD, VEGA GIDEY, CRAIG HEALY, OLAF ALEX, PHILIP KURIAN, JONATHAN VISSER, DAVID DIAS, ANJAN KATTA, JAKOB KLINKBY, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, PAULINA BARREN, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ARTHUR KOH, AND ZOOP! At its simplest, what Colin Wilson calls Faculty X is "simply that latent power in human beings possess to reach beyond the present." Yet its existence is evinced in all those phenomena that modernity files under "supernatural" or "occult." As difficult to explain as it is impossible to omit from any honest survey of human existence, the occult haunts the modern, not just as a vestige of the past but also, perhaps, as a promise from a time to come. For Wilson, magic isn't the living fossil the arch-rationalists would like it to be, but a "science of the future." Faculty X is an evolutionary power, innately positive, inseparable from the will to live and the unshakeable conviction that, somehow, this world has some real, ineffable meaning. In this episode, JF and Phil discuss Wilson's concept of Faculty X as elaborated in his monumental 1971 work, The Occult. Prof. David Benatar joins us to explore the concept of antinatalism, the philosophical idea that procreation is morally bad because of the inevitable suffering that beings will experience as a result of their being brought into existence. We examine David's assertion that "even the best lives, contrary to popular opinion, ultimately contain more bad than good", why the negative aspects of life tend to go unrecognized, whether the scale of immorality for bringing life into the world is culturally dependant, why the testimonials of people who claim to have lead a happy life ought not be to taken at face value, the anti-natalist position on sex and abortion, and whether or not there's anything we can do as a species to make coming into existence worthwhile. *** BOOKS MENTIONED *** "The Human Predicament" https://amzn.to/2NyPgpk "Better Never to Have Been" https://amzn.to/2uPcCQ1 "The Second Sexism" https://amzn.to/2NAJLXB *** BECOME A PATRON *** http://patreon.com/myownworstenemy *** SOCIAL MEDIA *** Facebook: http://facebook.com/myownworstenemyorg Twitter: http://twitter.com/dannydwhittaker *** CREDITS *** Theme Music: Falling Down by Ryan Little http://youtube.com/user/TheR4C2010 Podcast Image: RANT 73 https://flic.kr/p/BBxPX2 DISCLAIMER: My Own Worst Enemy is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.co.uk and affiliated sites.
