Elwood Jones (Asian Cinema Film Club podcast) and The Reverend Scott K (The Church of Tarantino podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Elwood's choice World War Z. World War Z (2013) is an action zombie film film directed by Marc (Quantum of Solace) Forster and inspired by the book of the same name by Max Brooks. Brad Pitt stars as Gerry Lane, an ex United Nations investigator who is tasked with finding the source and also a potential cure for a sudden zombie apocalypse. World War Z's biggest downfall is that it came out after the genre defining 28 Days Later. In its attempt to out do 28 Days Later running zombies it creates zombies that aren't really zombies. It's also biggest downfall is its decision to not stay faithful to the source material and take its name but go in a different direction. It also fails the genre by being a PG-13 certificate and lacks the gore to be a true zombie film. This was reflected in the recommendability scores, it's two hour plus runtime affected repeat viewing and engagement categories to give an overall score of 3.37. The Reverend Scott K (The Church of Tarantino podcast) and Elwood Jones (Asian Cinema Film Club podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Scott's choice Godzilla Minus One. Godzilla Minus One (2023) is a Japanese Kaiju film and the 37th in the Godzilla franchise. This Godzilla was written and directed Takashi Yamazaki, and also visual effects that went on to win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Becoming the first non-English language film in Academy Awards history to do so. It was the first Godzilla film to be nominated for an Academy Award. Set in post-war Japan, kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima lands his plane onto Odo Island for repairs. Lead mechanic Sōsaku Tachibana suspects that he is actually faking the mechanical issues to avoid his duty. During the night Godzilla attacks the island. Shikishima fails to shoot and is knocked unconscious. He wakes up to find him and Tachibana are the only survivors, and Tachibana is angry he did not attack Godzilla. Shikishima returns home to find his parents dead and is plagued by survivors guilt. Trying to make amends he joins the crew of boat tasked with clearing mines where he encounters Godzilla again. Historically Godzilla films have found their fans but haven't really been a hit outside its loyal fans. Godzilla Minus One however appealed to a much wider audience and its success at the Oscars helped find a new generation of fans. Recommendability scores for Godzilla Minus One were very high, it's runtime of over two hours let it down a little for repeat viewing and it was agreed it needed to be seen at the cinema but it still scores a very respectable 3.75 overall. Book Vs. Movie: "The Poseidon Adventure" (1971)The differences between the super gross book and the entertaining movie (We are not going to hide our bias here!)At Book Vs. Movie, whenever people say, "Duh--the book is always better than the movie!" the Margos would say, "yeah--have you ever read Jaws?" Well, now we have another book-to-movie adaptation that features a horrible, racist, sexist, homophobic, and misogynistic novel that became a fun hit film. Sportswriter Paul Gallico helped many stories become excellent films, including Pride of the Yankees, The Snow Goose, and the musical stage Carnival! He wrote over 40 books, numerous short stories, and dozens of T.V. and movie scripts. He began his career working for the New York Daily News sports desk and later became a prolific travel writer spending 10,000 miles on the road in the U.S. for Reader's Digest. In 1969, he published The Poseiden Adventure to little fanfare. The tale of a wayward ship sunk while traveling to Africa features some of the most loathsome characters we have ever had the displeasure of reading. (The audiobook featuring narration by actor Dylan Baker makes it slightly more palatable.)Trigger warning: This story features a character being raped who then comforts her attacker and wishes she was pregnant by him. (Seriously!) The movie by producer Irwin Allen and director Ronald Neame became an instant classic which began a slate of many disaster films in the 1970s. It would become the highest-grossing film of 1973, grossing over $125 million worldwide. It won an Academy Award for best special effects and best original song "The Morning After." Our lead actor is Gene Hackman as Reverand Frank Scott who is a renegade preacher who turns into a hero for the passengers of the S.S. Poseidon (partly filmed on the RMS Queen Mary.) at the time, he was a hot property after the success of The French Connection, and his performance is very passionate. Co-star Shelley Winters won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Belle Rosen--a middle-aged swimmer who gives her life to protect the survivors. (Spoiler!) On this episode of the Modern Spirituality Podcast, Stephanie Welter, a realtor with Keller Williams Success Realty, sits down with a special guest - Reverend Scott Donahue. Not only is Reverend Scott the President of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, he is also the priest that married Stephanie and her husband and baptized their children. Good friends already, these two quickly get into conversation around Reverend Scott's upbringing and how he found his way to priesthood. Growing up in Mt. Prospect, Reverend Scott paints a picture of an idyllic suburban childhood filled with neighborhood kids running around. By the time he reached 7th grade, however, his life took a serious turn with the sudden death of his father.  His mother, wanting him to have a positive educational environment as well as mentors in his life, put Reverend Scott into a Catholic high school, St. Viter run by Viatorian priests and brothers.  “I was really influenced by the Victorian priests and the brothers and their commitment to education, but also their commitment in terms of lifestyle, taking care of people, being inquisitive, compassionate, good listeners, you know, and that stuck with me.” While a student at Loyola University, Reverend Scott was on track to going to law school, taking the LSATs when, as he calls it, the “hound of heaven” that was nagging him inside.  “So have you thought about ministry? Have you thought about priesthood? And so truly it was very pragmatic. So I went to a fifth year of college and I took some more theology and some philosophy.” From there, he tells his story of his love affair with the Church and how that drew him to make a commitment that has led him to 40 years of service to the Church this upcoming May.  “I think the great gift in life is journeying with people.” The pair go on to talk about how important it is to align your thoughts and your behavior and how that is reaching true integrity - the opposite of cognitive dissonance. They also chat about Reverend Scott's book, Years of Mercy, a collection of stories of ten children he's worked with at Mercy Home. It's a book filled with love's remarkable power in changing traumatic and dire circumstances.  Join these two in a beautiful conversation about the power of love, hope, and living out the Gospel to truly help and inspire others on this episode of the Modern Spirituality Podcast.

A native of Arkansas, Scott received his Bachelor of Arts in English from John Brown University and a Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary. Scott enjoys playing guitar (and a little mandolin), riding bikes, carpentry, poems, and walking, whether on a path in the woods or a sidewalk in the city. TooTon Talk (T3), with a breath of fresh air, welcomes The Reverend Scott McLeod of St. Georges Anglican Church, St. Catharines, ON, as he joins me in this 'raw and ready' conversation highlighting topics ranging from: the St. Georges Church 225 year legacy; Canada's Refugee Sponsorship Program; the revolutionary 'Me Too' campaign; and the role of The Church and Spirituality in today's society. I setup in Father Scott's office at St. Georges Anglican Church for the chat and the production principles employed were very straightforward. I wanted it, as stated above, 'raw & ready'. So, I recorded and posted it right off the hop. One, I truly feel, gets a sense for how poised, approachable, compassionate and progressive Father Scott is. An arbiter of change! We address some significant issues and truly touch on a sensitive topics at about the 40 and 45-minute marks of this exclusive podcast. Oh, and the call from 'upstairs' was a highlight as well. Thank you for listening and take care, Anthony
