Have you ever felt socially awkward or anxious in a crowd? Do you find relief in consuming substances, certain foods and sugary treats? Well guess what? You're FAR from alone! And better yet, we have a fun solution for you! My esteemed guest today, JW Ross is a lifelong innovator and inventor of Botanic Tonic's “Feel Free” plant-based tonic. He started his career as a Texas oilman who experienced immense corporate success that was tainted with alcohol addiction. After hitting rock bottom and going to rehab, JW purged alcohol from his life and completely pivoted his career. He went on life-changing trips to the South Pacific and Southeast Asia, where he discovered botanical plant medicines whose ingredients have been used socially and in wellness for centuries. After discovering these plants, JW dedicated his life to finding a herbal solution that would replace alcohol and still give him a euphoric lift with a positive impact. He home-tested many concoctions, finally finding the perfect recipe that turned into the feel free tonic recipe. Join Victoria and Brace this episode as they unpack addiction, in all its forms. They talk about: What could be classified as an addiction, and whether the distinction of an addiction versus normal behavior should be more ‘grey' The purpose of an addiction and the reasons addictions exist The first step in moving through an addiction The way the coaching container develops as addictions are addressed How the complexities of addiction mean that you are ultimately dealing with initial ‘causes' and multifaceted consequences - but how that really doesn't mean that healing from addiction requires unpacking and apologizing for every consequence The brilliance, and potential harm, within the 12 step process The shame of addiction and how to work with that The falseness of the statement “you are never healed” The problem with the labels of addiction, sobriety and ‘Recovered' addict This is such a deep and explorative episode. Victoria takes the reigns as she describes her work with addicts and those with serious dependencies on substances. She walks you through her different approach which takes a trauma-informed lens when it comes to addiction: and the process of being more with oneself, and more with each single individual moment - which argues against the necessity of a cold turkey approach to overcoming substance dependence. A hugely revelatory episode, we hope that this brings you some insights, awareness and different ways to think about addictions, addicts and your own addictive tendencies. As always: like, subscribe, share - and this time, really importantly, if you know someone facing addiction, send this episode to them to offer some support.   Mentioned in this podcast: The Aletheia Group website is now live: thealetheiagroup.com Registration to be part of the founding member cohort of The Unveil Academy is now open: unveilacademy.com - and register prior to August 1st to attend Summer School - 2 sessions over August on The Gene Keys. What I Didn't Tell My Therapist
Season 2 - Episode 14 : Healing Addictions as a Creative Family Project with Beth Syverson

What I Didn't Tell My Therapist

What do you do when Addiction plays too big a role in your family? Start a podcast of course! Beth Syverson and her son Joey have used their SAFE HOME PODCAST as a powerful tool to explore and share healing, communication and information to help other families avoid the same pitfalls they have experienced. Their podcast covers rarely discussed perspectives on addiction, adoption trauma, bullying, addiction relapse, over-the-counter addictions and so much more. In today's show Beth discusses how her own struggle with sugar and workaholism and her own healing journey with Buddhism and therapy has given her the insight to maintain a compassionate and supportive connection with Joey. She explains how the addictions have come about as a result of adoption trauma and racist bullying directed toward Joey as a Japanese-American and that these root traumas, until they are healed can cause dysregulation that needs soothing. Since his middle-school years Joey has struggled with suicidal ideation, and attempted suicide multiple times. The pain has been real and led abuse of over-the-counter drugs, psychadelics, marijuana, among other substances. Beth points out that just because a child or adult has substance abuse issues, it doesn't make them bad - but it does point out that they are in pain. And it is the pain that needs to be addressed not the character or morality of the person. During the podcast we also discuss the reality that our American culture rewards individuals for some addictions like workaholism, heavily punishes us for street drug abuse, and is neutral about sugar addiction. And there is the ironic reality that many of the pharmaceuticals that are pushed upon people with mental health challenges are as toxic and addictive and sometimes more so than marijuana or some other illegal substances. This is such an important show, because addiction touches all of us personally in ways we need to better understand! To see how a family can maintain bonds through real life struggles, while also maintaining their own principles and prioritizing healthy and not co-dependent relationships, check out this show Episode 14 and then pop over and binge on Beth and Joey's SAFE HOME PODCAST.
