Episode 66 - Alex and Allyson Grey, Forging Their Own Magical Path This all new episode of the MAPS podcast was recorded live at Psychedelic Science '23 with the legendary seekers of all things mystical, Alex and Allyson Grey. If you've heard a podcast with them before you know it needs no introduction.  NOTE - please excuse the glitch of the missing first 4 minutes of the interview. There were some technical issues at PS '23.  Allyson Grey, a conceptual abstract painter and co-founder of CoSM, Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, has long been a mentor and influencer of the contemporary Visionary Art movement. In 1971, in a psychedelic awakening through the guidance of Ram Dass' book Be Here Now, Allyson heard a voice calling her to express in her art an essentialized world view. Chaos, Order & Secret Writing came to artistically symbolize the three essential characteristics of human perception, a minimal yet all-encompassing artistic statement worthy of immersion for a lifetime. Allyson's art is a personal and shared meditation on the structure of thought, life and enlightenment. Alex Grey is an American visual artist, author, teacher, and Vajrayana practitioner known for creating spiritual and psychedelic paintings. He works in multiple forms including performance art, process art, installation art, sculpture, visionary art, and painting.

In this episode, on the eve of Bicycle Day, Victoria and Kyle interview two long-standing icons of visionary psychedelic art: Alex and Allyson Grey. They talk about the LSD trip that saved Alex's life, connected him to Allyson, inspired his art, and even made him change his name; his decades-in-the-making “Sacred Mirrors” project of 21 7-foot tall pieces depicting the complex layers of human existence; the interconnectedness of life; the history of psychedelic art; how imagination and non-ordinary states help us connect with the divine; and the value of art in conveying the mystical experience. Alex and Allyson are the Co-Founders of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, an interspiritual church/retreat center in upstate New York that, after years of work, is debuting Entheon: an art sanctuary and psychedelic reliquary featuring much of their art and work from favorite artists, a shrine to Tool (who Alex has worked with for most of their career), and a collection of relics from psychedelic legends that includes Albert Hofmann's glasses, art signed by Stan Grof and the Shulgins, and even Timothy Leary's ashes. Entheon opens on June 3, on the anniversary of the first acid trip the Greys took together, which gave them a framework for understanding life and an inspiration for art they still follow to this day. And in honor of Bicycle Day, Alex talks about two pieces dedicated to Albert Hofmann, and continues his Bicycle Day tradition of reading a statement Hofmann made a year before he passed about psychedelics being the “absolute highest importance to consciousness change.” In celebration of Albert Hofmann and the gift he gave us, and with inspiration from the incredibly complex and beautiful art Alex and Allyson create, have a happy, safe, and creative Bicycle Day!  www.psychedelicstoday.com

Sacred Partnership with Alex and Allyson Grey

Relationship Alchemy

Since meeting them for the first time at a conference, I've been inspired and blown away by Alex and Allyson Grey, the co-founders of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM). That time was shortly after my father died, and the Greys immersed me in the most enlightening conversation about death. After that, a friendship was born. Having been closely involved in a small group that helped CoSM come to fruition, I've witnessed the depths of the creative partnership that Alex and Allyson possess. I wanted to bring them as an example of what's possible and what goes on behind the scenes in a relationship of creative life partners. Tune in to this episode: Sacred Partnership with Alex and Allyson Grey   Key points covered in this episode:   ✔️ See through your partner's eyes. For 46 years, Alex and Allyson Grey have established the habit of working together in one studio. They have made it a point to collaborate and stay involved, even while pursuing their personal artistic endeavors. They believe that the process of creative and performative partnership allows couples to get insights into one's beloved's thoughts and preferences.   ✔️ Commitment is a transformative engine. It's the override program for couples seeking to endure the test of time while improving for the better. Self-awareness and reflection of one's past can lead you and your partner on a path to a healthier and deeper connection.   ✔️ The number of years you've dedicated to a relationship holds no water unless you strive for self-discovery. Every day you spend with your partner, continue to seek fresh methods in accessing their consciousness to learn more about them. Marie-Elizabeth Mali dissects the significance of visionary culture in the post-pandemic world.    ✔️ Our partner is our sacred mirror. As humans, we dislike our flaws being pointed out, and prefer hearing about our positive characteristics. For change and growth to occur, we should recognize the dreadful parts of ourselves. Having a partner that reflects both our beauty and shortcomings helps us become better people, even if it's uncomfortable.   ✔️ Have an aspect of your relationship that benefits the world. Co-founding the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors was a divine experience in Alex and Allyson Grey's relationship. They have deliberately chosen to create a place for religious gathering as an eternal service to their community – a meaningful contribution that they can leave behind for generations.   ✔️ Work in connection with your creative spirit. Religion ties us back to the divine and the core of our being. Whether you're an artist or someone wishing to play a positive part in this world, everyone is a medium of transmission of imaginative flow. When we make life-changing decisions, the universe or any other higher being we believe in expands and makes it possible for us. The art of Alex Grey represents realms of visionary consciousness, interweaving the anatomy of body and soul. In Grey's paintings, the light of spirit illuminates the core of each being, depicting psychedelic mystical experiences with artwork that has touched and inspired millions. Alex has authored five books, including three monographs, had countless exhibitions, and extensive reproductions and articles about his artwork. His speaking appearances, including a popular TED talk and his work with the rock band TOOL on three albums, including stage sets, animations, and Grammy award-winning album art have made Alex Grey a renowned figure in contemporary art. Allyson Grey is a painter and social sculptor. Allyson's paintings address an essentialized world view, the artist's interpretation of the realms of Chaos, Order, and Secret Writing. Chaos symbolizes the material world, a field of colored light made of particles and waves, cells and systems. Order represents the interconnected realm of pure spirit, a mandala of energy and light. Secret Writing scribes the untranslatable realm of creative expression. Educated at Tufts University (MFA), Allyson has long been an art educator, editor, art events creator, muse to artists, and the creative and life partner of the artist, Alex Grey since meeting in art school (1975). Together, the Greys co-founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, a spiritual creative retreat center outside of New York City.   Follow Alex: https://www.alexgrey.com https://www.instagram.com/alexgreycosm https://www.facebook.com/alexgreycosm Follow Allyson:  https://www.allysongrey.com https://www.instagram.com/allysongreycosm https://www.facebook.com/allysongreycosm CoSM cosm.org   Livestreams https://www.cosm.org/live   Free Gift: CoSM Journal of Visionary Culture: Love - Free Download https://shop.cosm.org/products/cosm-journal-10?variant=33344745635939 ——————————————————————— ★★★ About Marie-Elizabeth Mali ★★★ Marie-Elizabeth is the founder of Relationship Alchemy, where she helps women leaders create loving and nourishing intimate relationships that support their work in the world. ★ TAKE THE RELATIONSHIP ALCHEMY ASSESSMENT ★ The relationship you desire is possible! This week, Mike and Oteil talk with legendary visionary artists and couple Alex & Allyson Grey, who together founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, a spiritual creative retreat center outside of New York City. Alex & Allyson talk about using psychedelics with intention to find the “mystic light” that runs through everything, and the experience of having your mind opened to love and to the light. They also discuss the experience where their love was solidified, when Alex took LSD for the first time at Allyson's apartment, and his dark mental state that precipitated this huge life shift. All four share their mystical experiences encountering God, and finding ways to get back to the “flow state,” the awakened creative state where one cohabits with the divine. The wisdom and food for thought is plentiful throughout this conversation.  The mystic paintings of Alex Grey articulate realms of psychedelic visionary consciousness, revealing interwoven energies of body and soul, love and spirit, illuminating the anatomical core of each being. Alex's visual meditations on the nature of life and consciousness, the subject of his art, have reached millions through his five books including three monographs, the exhibition and extensive reproduction of his artwork, speaking appearances including a popular TED talk, stage sets for major rock bands, video animation, and Grammy award winning album art.  Allyson Grey is a painter, social sculptor, Alex's creative and life partner since meeting in art school in 1975. Chaos, Order and Secret Writing comprise the essentialized world view portrayed in Allyson's paintings. Chaos represents the material world, Order, the interconnected realm of energy and light and Secret Writing articulates the mystic realm of creative expression. MFA, Tufts University. Allyson has long been an art educator, event organizer and a muse to artists worldwide.  Together, the Grey's co-founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, a spiritual creative retreat center outside of New York City. On the forefront of a movement in which painters join musicians on stage, the Grey's have painted together live before tens of thousands of dancing young people at New York Broadway theaters, at sold-out festivals and arenas in dozens of international cities across five continents. As long-time advocates of “cognitive liberty,” a growing international “sacramental culture” has embraced the Grey's as important mapmakers and spokespersons for the visionary realm. Since co-creative authorship of the story of our lives is in our hands, how will we most positively, powerfully interpret the life we have and create this precious life? Through the filter of our own unique sequence of circumstances, we sculpt our life with the “chisel” of our world view.

The entrepreneurial spirit has driven Johnathan Singer from an early age. By 24, he began a career in publishing when he created the socially conscious lifestyle magazine “West Side Life” in Southern California. The experience expanded his connections with a wide range of artists, musicians, presenters and live performance personnel.   Collaborating with the art world inspired Johnathan to become an artist in his own right. He began performing real-time multimedia light shows to support concerts and musicians he knew through “West Side Life”. Singer’s artistic versatility also includes creative director roles, designing and producing DVDs for music producers, musicians, and other visionary artists. Singer pushed the boundaries of technology through these performances leading to new art forms which incorporated computer-generated images, texture maps, custom 3D animations and special effects. These innovations activated his audiences both with visual and auditory experience. His progressive art style propelled him as a live VJ, growing his business, and leading him to perform all over the globe.   Today Johnathan is one of the most notorious visionary artists creating content for world renowned Lighting Designers and VJs. Some of his most noted artist collaborations are with Alex and Allyson Grey, Chris Dyer, Amanda Sage, Tipper, The Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary shows, and Dead & Company. He is proud to have done multiple productions at Red Rocks Amphitheater (Denver), Soldier Field (Chicago), The Beacon Theater (NYC), The Sony Theater (NYC), The Fillmore (SF), among others.

His portfolio includes touring high end glamping hotels, bringing mindfulness experiences to thousands of millennials, and merging biohacking technology with immersive storytelling. We talk about a wide range of subjects starting with Technodelics, immersive transformative experiences that take the place of psychedelics for mindfulness awareness as well as educational possibilities in the most fun way possible. Imagine a benevolent spaceship infirmary hosted by the most beautiful and epics beings that does meditation and healing modalities during the day and an afterparty at night during festivals. His company Andromeda Entertainment really goes all out with their VR projects SoundSelf and Audio Trip. We continue forth into the “Gaia TV of Videogames” as he dreams it up with wearables and haptics. Great biofeedback technologies and wearables are listed. A bit about this week’s amazing guest in her own words:“I’m finishing up my Masters in Transpersonal Art Therapy at Naropa University. I've been studying Transpersonal Psychology for 6 years now. My focus has always been the theoretical and practical orientation to psychedelic assisted psychotherapy. I was raised by dead heads and frequent cannabis users, who simultaneously maintained deep professionalism and family values. So, drug culture was really inherent in my development. I have so much to say about Psychedelic Art Therapy. I've worked on the MAPS MDMA PTSD study as a night attendant for 4 years now. I work both in Boulder and in Fort Collins on this. I'm a trained Ketamine therapist (trained by three different institutions over the last year) and have done tons of above ground ketamine and cannabis work myself. While undergoing somatic psychedelic therapy (using ketamine, mostly), I made art throughout the whole process.I'm a freelance training coordinator. I've coordinated a training for the Ketamine Training Center, headed by Dr.Phil Wolfson, in addition to my role as Education Outreach Coordinator for Innate Path. I had the gift of being a resident workshop facilitator this summer at Meow Wolf in Santa Fe. I ran workshops on astrology, non ordinary states, and art therapy, In addition to recycled art jewelry making (with recycled scraps from Meow Wolf Denver and Vegas), AND, couples art therapy workshops. Created in every medium, from oil painting and sculpture to contemporary digital modeling, these visionary works of art give those who experience them a chance to “see the unseen,” realize wider modes of perception, and discover spiritual and mystical realms.   In this full-color illustrated book, David Jay Brown and Rebecca Ann Hill examine the work and inspirations of eighteen of today's leading female visionary artists, including Josephine Wall, Allyson Grey, Amanda Sage, Martina Hoffmann, Penny Slinger, and Carolyn Mary Kleefeld. Visionary artists draw maps of the ineffable for the rest of us. In today's episode, Alex Grey talks with Ken about his approach to this visionary plane, and the steps it took for him to give himself fully to expressions of the cosmic. In the process, they discuss Alex's deep connection to Ram Dass, his thoughts about gurus, about working with shadow material, the drug war, and what it's like to see your artwork tattooed on thousands of people. They also dive into the inspiration behind the Sacred Mirrors - the series of 21 paintings of spiritual states that took Alex a decade to complete - and the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, or CoSM, the home of those paintings and as well as a home base for Visionary Art and psychedelic spirituality in upstate NY. Alex Grey is the author of Sacred Mirrors, Transfigurations, The Mission of Art, and Art Psalms. His work has graced numerous album covers including those of Nirvana, TOOL, and the Beastie Boys; and been exhibited throughout the world. In 2004, Alex and his wife, artist Allyson Grey, opened the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM) in New York City, a gallery and sacred space for Alex's original paintings and other visionary artworks. In 2009, CoSM, now a church, moved from Manhattan to the Hudson Valley. You can find out more about Alex Grey and his work at http://www.cosm.org and at http://www.alexgrey.com. “Season of the Witch, Ep. 1” - The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM), is among the most vibrant, innovative, and long-lived transformational communities on the East Coast. It revolves around the Visionary Art of painters Alex and Allyson Grey. Located about 2 hours north of New York City along the Hudson River in the town of Wappingers Falls, CoSM has long been a community where the psychedelic approach to the visionary experience is honored and supported, and the role of creativity in transformation is given pride of place. In today's episode, Ken talks with CoSM's head witch and den mother, Allyson Grey, about how she approaches her art as a form of service to others. She speaks directly to what it takes to create and nurture a community devoted to spiritual ideals — as a form of art. CoSM is actually incorporated as an interfaith art church. And they are in the process of building a visionary art temple called Entheon. Allyson also discusses her paintings of secret and sacred language.Allyson Grey received an MFA from Tufts University, and she has long been an art educator, arts organizer and muse to artists worldwide. Together, Allyson and Alex have painted on stage in dozens of cities before thousands of dancing young people at festivals and arenas across five continents including Broadway theaters in New York City. As long-time advocates of "cognitive liberty," a growing international "sacramental culture" has embraced the Grey's as mapmakers and spokespersons for the visionary realm. To learn more about CoSM and the building of Entheon, visit http://www.Cosm.org.Follow us on Instagram @TheEvolverPodcast: https://www.instagram.com/theevolverpodcastThe Evolver is sponsored by The Alchemist's Kitchen, a botanical dispensary dedicated to the power of plants, where you can ask an herbalist to recommend the herbal remedy that's most right for you. Talking Out Your Glass podcast

Widely regarded as one of the godfathers of the functional glass community, Banjo works glass in a torch to create mind-blowing psychedelic sculpture that transcends its functionality. In doing so, the artist has attracted a legion of faithful fans and collectors, many who do not smoke marijuana. Banjo’s glasswork brings to life interdimensional biomechanical deities that represent the emergence of sacred feminine energy within the post-modern techno-industrial matrix. He also pays homage to pop culture, crafting thousand-plus piece Transformer robots, motorcycles, cars, and Star Wars characters in borosilicate glass. Though it’s happening, Banjo and his contemporaries don’t need gallery support or acceptance from the mainstream art world in order to sell their work. The functional glass community has always been tightly woven with the fibers of social networking. With over 150,000 followers on Instagram, hungry collectors devour Banjo’s new work the minute images appear online. “Pipe-makers, glassblowers, and even glass collectors make up an entirely new class of cannabis celebrity,” wrote Ben Parker Karris, editor and correspondent for Kind Stash, Los Angeles, California. “With the nationwide legalization of marijuana, more artists will be inspired to enter the glass industry, because the demand for pieces is growing so quickly. This heightened demand creates a rise in the value of the work as well. Artists who were once barely earning money for their work are sometimes pulling in as much as $30,000 per piece.” In 2016, Banjo had his first solo exhibition, Sacramental Vessels, held October 8 through November 13, 2016 at Gregorio Escalante Gallery in Los Angeles, California. Featured alongside other visionary works by Alex and Allyson Grey, Amanda Sage, Chris Dyer, and Luke Brown, Banjo’s android-goddesses snuggled in amongst their pistons and gears, represent harbingers of another incremental step towards normalizing and celebrating marijuana culture as part of creative life. Goddesses in vibrant transparent colors mingled with those created in opaque glass, each one surrounded by the hundreds of detailed nuts, bolts, screws, and knobs of Banjo’s mega-mechanisms. In terms of industry growth over the next few years, many believe the functional glass movement has a chance to become one of the biggest art movements in recent history. According to Banjo, the government called glass pipes a billon dollar industry as far back as 2003. He estimates that currently between five and 10 functional glass artists are earning half a million dollars per year, with over 300 artists bringing in over 100K each. Nice and tidy.

Breaking Through Personal Limitations

“The agony of breaking through personal limitations is the agony of spiritual growth. Art, literature, myth and cult, philosophy, and ascetic disciplines are instruments to help the individual past the limiting horizons into spheres of ever-expanding realization.” - Joseph Campbell It's entirely normal for us to run into some sort of wall in our lives, whether that's in the work that we do or in our personal lives. Remember though that feeling like you're in a rut is actually a good thing. Why? Because you're aware of the rut in which you are in. And that's no easy truth to acknowledge. David Foster Wallace made that quite clear when he gave his “This is Water” commencement speech: “It is extremely difficult to stay alert & attentive instead of getting hypnotized by the constant monologue inside your head.” So, how does one break out of a rut and push through personal limitations?  Try this,    Take Your Artist Self on a Date The whole purpose of art is to evoke awareness in another, to break a mold, to get someone to think. So, take your artist self on a date. Yes, seriously. I repeat. Go ahead and take your artist self on a date. Julia Cameron, the author of The Artist's Way, argues that when we take our artist self on a date, it helps us think beyond our own barriers of thought. So, what does this look like? Consider like I did last week and go to an art gallery with a notebook to write down your thoughts on a few pieces that call to your attention. For instance, last Sunday I went to COSM, a beautiful new-age art gallery which displays Alex and Allyson Grey's psychedelic artwork. The Grey's work is awe-inspiring at least with huge paintings that take cubism and turn it internal. One image stood out to me in particular: a beautiful painting of a woman nursing her child that shows the outside, inside, and ethereal energetic systems of both the mother and child. Okay, I honestly cannot put their art into words, so take a look here to see what I mean. For one hour, I walked around the art gallery (both indoors and out) and then sat down with my notebook to write a poem, then a journal entry where I flushed out my thoughts. It was only an hour, but it was enough to tilt the way I look at things. Consider taking your artist self on one date this week. The only criteria is that you go alone. Go for a walk through nature, visit an art gallery, go to the library and read something new, or just walk around a new neighborhood to break routine.  Read a Challenging Text Even if it's just 30% of a book, consider checking out a book on something you know absolutely nothing about. It's amazing, right, how reading from the comfort of an arm chair can get the mind to travel? For example, I knew very little about organizing and picked up Marie Kondo's book, Spark Joy, and it has opened my mind to the freedom that comes from tidying up our lives. Stoic Discipline When I read the ancient Roman philosopher Seneca's letters, one thing stands out to me. And that's the habit of discipline in which Seneca professes. Seneca argues that if we discipline ourselves to experience a worst-case scenario for a short time, we no longer allow fear of that scenario to control our lives. For instance, if you fear losing your money, say from leaving a salaried job to pursue an entrepreneurial dream, then Seneca would suggest you experience living in poverty for a short time, from one day to one week. Or you could try living off a dollar a day like two college students did in the powerful documentary, Living on One Dollar, but I understand if that's not in your cards right now! Or if living off of rice and water scares you, consider trying it just for a day. Once you shake hands with that which scares you, it no longer has any control and this propels you further down your path on purpose. Philosophical Inquiry Consider joining a group at a local coffee shop that dives deep into philosophical inquiry. Doing so forces us to think outside our own confirmation bias. Meaning, while surrounding ourselves with empowering people is great, doing so traps our thinking into a bubble. Do people actually do this, you ask? It turns out, yes they do, and it's gaining in popularity. Socratic Cafes, a meet-up that engages in Socratic inquiry, continue to pop up in neighborhoods across the world. For instance, I joined one such discussion at a library in New York City where we discussed what it means to live authentically. And boy was it a unique evening because of the variety of people who showed up. Who showed up to chat? One college professor at Columbia University, a few homeless who live on the harsh streets of Manhattan, one middle-aged woman in need of career change, a couple college students, and a marketing consultant. We disagreed more than we agreed and had a heck of a time doing so. One thing is for sure: I walked out of that discussion with my head spinning with new thoughts. Leveling Up Mastermind Consider creating a small mastermind group of 3-5 people where each of you has a similar goal: to launch a business, to create a podcast, to better your teaching practice, to be a better mother/father, for a few examples. The thing here though is to have one A-level person in the group who has pushed through the barriers you are working to push through. For instance, if you are working to launch a new business, ask someone to join the group who can coach you all through the difficulties in starting up a new business venture. Do you need to pay them? Most of the time, no. They will equally gain much from the mastermind because here's a secret: When you teach something, you really, really, really, actually learn it. Teaching concretizes learning. Sometimes though, it does pay to hire a coach who will mentor your group to push through the barriers. This holds true for sports just as much as it does for personal growth. ------------- What about you? Which of these tips ring true for you, if any? Like always, I'd love to hear from you and learn of other ways to break through personal limitations. Wishing you all a beautiful week ahead, full of love, light, and adventure. Just remember, life is a dance.

In it, the human figure is rendered transparently with X-ray or CAT-scan eyes, the way Aldous Huxley saw a leaf when he was on mescaline. Every bone, organ and vein is detailed in refulgent color; objects and space are knitted together in dense, decorative linear webs." Psychedelic Best known for the Sacred Mirrors series CoSM, the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors “The Mission of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, is to build an enduring sanctuary of visionary art to inspire every pilgrim’s creative path and embody the values of love and perennial wisdom.” Alex’s art is featured by Tool, Nirvana, The String Cheese Incident, Meshuggah, and the Beastie Boys. Guest speakers: Allyson & Alex Grey plus Ralph Abraham PROGRAM NOTES: "Our parents were completely unprepared for the sixties . . . and for our behavior." – Alex Grey "[In drug education as it is practiced today] there is this kind of overriding mis-characterization of drugs, and an exaggeration of the problems that, marijuana especially, gives us." –Alex Grey "And they contradict people's own observations."–Allyson Grey "There are perils, and we have children and we want to protect them. So drugs can lead to terrible things as well." –Allyson Grey "Basically, you want to establish a bond with your children, and not to come in with total, preconceived notions about how they ought to behave. The idea is to listen and to establish a link of trust so that you can really be there for them, instead of alienating them. So you have to learn about these substances and the possible substances they're using, so that you can be an informed assist for them." –Alex Grey "If you've already been lying to your kids about drugs, then why should they listen to you about anything, including the dangers of meth?" –Alex Grey "If any of you haven't gone a year and a half without any substances, it's really a great experience. The altered state of sobriety is something Alex and I recommend." –Allyson Grey "This is what my mother taught me when it came to sex, and I applied it to drugs. Whenever a child asks a question you answer it, and you don't tell them things they don't want to know, or they're not ready to know. But if they ask you something, you tell them honestly." –Allyson Grey "We're part of an underground society, and that's a heavy burden to place on a young mind if they're not ready." –Alex Grey "The Connection Between Mathematics and the Logos" Ralph Abraham tells the story of how he became involved with the psychedelic community and how psychedelic medicines informed his work and that of the generation who developed the personal computer among other achievements. In this trialogue, Ralph poses (and answers) the question,"Have psychedelics had an influence in the evolution of science, mathematics, the computer revolution, computer graphics, and so on?" "We have to admit that mathematics has been reborn, and this rebirth is some kind of outcome of, apparently, the computer revolution and the psychedelic revolution, which took place concurrently, concomitantly, cooperatively in the 1960s." –Ralph Abraham Download MP3 PCs – Right click, select option Macs – Ctrl-Click, select option
