Episode Notes The Henley Passport Index has just released its rankings for the most powerful passports of 2024, and Singapore took the top spot, writes Asia Editor Peden Doma Bhutia.  A Singaporean passport provides visa-free access to 195 countries. Japan and South Korea occupy the second and third spots in the index while the U.S. is in eighth place. The Henley Passport Index measures the strength of passports based on the number of destinations their holders can enter without a visa.  Japan had occupied the top position in last year's Henley Passport Index.  Next, Southwest Airlines saw its profits drop significantly during the second quarter as it announced it's making major changes to boost its bottom line, writes Meghna Maharishi.   Although Southwest posted record revenue, its net income dropped roughly 46%. As a part of its strategy to increase profits, Southwest announced on Thursday it would roll out premium seating and do away with its open boarding process.  Maharishi notes those are significant changes considering Southwest has long been known for all-economy cabins and open seating. Elliott Investment Management, a hedge fund that has built a big stake in Southwest, called for the carrier to change its business model.  Finally, Barcelona is changing its tourism slogan as part of its strategy to attract tourists interested in the city's culture and history, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam.  Barcelona's tourism board is replacing its 15-year-old ‘Visit Barcelona' with ‘This is Barcelona.' Mateu Hernández, general director of Turisme de Barcelona, said the change represented a shift from the city's efforts to promote mass tourism. The new campaign launches on August 22, the first day of the America's Cup sailing in the city.  Barcelona's new strategy comes in the wake of recent large-scale protests against mass tourism. Roughly 3,000 people took to the streets earlier this month to call for a ban on short-term rentals and an end to tourism promotion, among other demands.  Connect with Skift LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/skift/ X: https://twitter.com/skift Facebook: https://facebook.com/skiftnews Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/skiftnews/ WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaAL375LikgIXmNPYQ0L/ Subscribe to @SkiftNews and never miss an update from the travel industry.

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Monday, May 20, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:What used to be the poster child of Indian startups and had a presence everywhere, from the FIFA World Cup to the Indian Cricket Team's jersey - Byju's - has witnessed a fall from grace over the last two years. The company, which was once a unicorn saw a 95% nosedive in its value. The Bengaluru-based company's woes do not seem to end. Rajnish Kumar and T.V. Mohandas Pai, advisors on the panel of Byju's parent company Think & Learn, have decided not to extend their tenure beyond June 30. This adds to the challenges faced by the company, as it navigates board exits, financial troubles, and increasing litigation. Both advisors have chosen to leave due to the company's ongoing legal entanglements, report Mint's senior editors Gopika Gopakumar and Varun Sood. The advisory panel, established in July last year following notable resignations from the board due to governance concerns, was part of a strategy to address these corporate governance issues. Unfortunately, Byju's continued to face operational challenges, including the inability to secure additional funding, leading to layoffs and delayed salaries. In the past three years up to March 2023, a staggering revelation came from India's food safety authorities: out of 43 million food samples tested, a quarter did not meet domestic food safety laws. Alarmingly, one in six of these were found to be either 'unsafe' or 'substandard,' while the remainder failed to adhere to labelling laws, often misleading consumers with incorrect information. While India's food safety regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India or FSSAI, did initiate litigation against these outliers, what they forgot to do was inform the citizens about them. Fssai and state agencies have not sufficiently informed the public about the specific manufacturers or brands involved, leaving consumers uninformed about potentially harmful products. The lack of transparency is evident in Fssai's 2021-22 annual report, which notably omits any mention of product recalls or license cancellations — standard practices in many other countries to protect consumers. Mint's Sayantan Bera and Suneera Tandon spoke to FSSAI insiders to understand why the central government agency has failed to crack the whip on companies selling substandard products, amidst global scrutiny of Indian packaged food brands. Sayantan and Suneera also break down the challenges being faced by the FSSAI including a lack of testing labs. The Financial Services Institutions Bureau, an autonomous body under the central government, is set to conduct interviews on May 21 to recommend a candidate for the chairman's post of the country's largest bank - the State Bank of India. This decision will be finalised on the same day, replacing the incumbent Dinesh Kumar Khara who is slated to retire on August 28.The candidates in consideration for the chairman's position are State Bank of India's (SBI) three managing directors—C.S. Setty, Ashwini Kumar Tewari, and Vinay M. Tonse. Mint's banking editor Gopika Gopakumar reports on the closely monitored selection process. C.S. Setty, the most senior among the candidates, has a background in managing the bank's stressed assets and comprehensive experience across various banking verticals. Ashwini Kumar Tewari brings a strong international and corporate banking portfolio, having managed SBI's operations in the U.S. and as the former CEO of SBI Card. Vinay M. Tonse, who oversees retail banking, has a deep understanding of the domestic market and a record of effective team-building.Last year, online gaming companies in India were hit with a significant tax demand totaling over ₹1.12 trillion from their past revenues, leading to a legal challenge currently pending in the Supreme Court. The GST Council, the central body overseeing indirect taxation, is set to deliberate on this issue, considering the industry's plea for relief from these substantial tax claims. Previously, the tax regime for online gaming was ambiguous, with companies paying an 18% GST on platform fees or commissions, which range from 5% to 20% of the deposits. However, a dramatic shift occurred on October 1, 2023, when the GST Council imposed a 28% tax on the full face value of deposits, retroactively applying this rate to past earnings. Mint's Gireesh Chandra Prasad reports that the central and state GST officials are currently reviewing the grievances expressed by the industry regarding the notices for the period leading up to October 2023. As the summer holiday season kicks off, the limitations of the Indian passport become glaringly apparent. According to the Henley Passport Index, out of 227 possible destinations, Indians can enter 31 countries without a visa and get a visa-on-arrival in 30 countries. This totals visa-free access to just 61 countries, leaving the vast majority requiring a visa obtained through traditional, more cumbersome means. Compare that with Brazil, where folks enjoy visa-free access to a whopping 173 countries. Even Russia, despite facing international sanctions, can access 120 countries relatively freely. It's a bit of an eye-opener, especially considering India's status as one of the world's fastest-growing economies. Visa-free access isn't just about economics, writes independent journalist Deepa Vasudevan. It's also influenced by a mix of factors like geography and reciprocal agreements. Take the European Union or the Asean bloc, for instance, where members enjoy hopping across each other's borders without much fuss. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Episode Notes Singapore has overtaken Japan as the country with the world's most powerful passport while the U.S. dropped two spots in recently released rankings, writes Travel Experiences Reporter Selene Brophy. Citizens of Singapore have visa-free access to 190 destinations, according to the Henley Passport Index. The Index ranks the world's passports by the number of destinations their holders can travel to without needing a visa. The U.S. passport is now tied with Lithuania for the world's 8th most powerful, providing visa-free access to 184 destinations.  Brophy notes the U.S. has seen a decade-long decline in passport power. A U.S. passport currently provides visa-free access to 12 more destinations than it did in 2013. Meanwhile, a Singaporean passport has obtained visa-free access to 25 more destinations over the past 10 years.  Next, United Airlines is moving to take advantage of the Asia-Pacific region's booming travel demand. The Chicago-based carrier unveiled on Tuesday three new routes serving the region, writes Reporter Jess Wade.  Wade reports those routes will include direct flights from San Francisco to Manila as well from Los Angeles to Hong Kong and Tokyo-Narita. United will also become the only U.S. airline to fly nonstop to Manila. A company executive said demand for transpacific travel is as strong, if not stronger, than transatlantic travel. Wade notes that the new routes, which start service in October, will result in United's transpacific network being 50% larger than all other U.S. airlines combined.  Finally, Thailand is increasingly targeting the Middle East as a major source market for tourism. Thai authorities aim to attract 400,000 visitors from the region this year, reports Asia Editor Peden Doma Bhutia in Skift's Middle East Travel Roundup. Bhutia writes Saudi Arabia is expected to surpass the United Arab Emirates as Thailand's largest market. Thailand anticipates welcoming 150,000 visitors from Saudi Arabia this year following the resumption of direct flights between the two countries. Saudi Arabia accounted for a little more than a quarter of the visitors from the Middle East to Thailand in the first half of 2023.  A Thai official said flight schedules between Thailand and the Middle East are currently 80% of pre-Covid levels. The Thai push to increase visitor numbers from the Middle East comes as Thailand expects tourist numbers from China, a major market for the country, to fall short of projections.

The Henley Passport Index is a ranking of all the world's passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. It is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which maintains a large travel information database and is enhanced by Henley & Partners' research team. The index includes 199 passports, giving users the most extensive and reliable information about their global access and mobility. With historical data spanning 17 years, it helps wealthy individuals and governments assess the value of citizenships around the world. The ranking is given on the total number of destinations that the holder can access visa-free. For each travel destination, if no visa is required for passport holders from a country or territory, then a score of 1 is allocated for that passport. This also applies if passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival, a visitor's permit, or an electronic travel authority (ETA) upon entry. These visa types require no pre-departure government approval, because of the specific visa-waiver programs in place. And in case a visa is required, or where a passport holder must apply for a government-approved electronic visa (e-Visa) before departure, a score of 0 is assigned. The same applies if they need pre-departure approval for a visa on arrival. The top 10 most powerful passports in 2022 are those issued by Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland, Luxembourg, Austria, and Denmark Japan, Singapore and South Korea have the most powerful passports. A Japanese passport provides hassle-free entry to 193 countries, one more than those from Singapore and South Korea. Russian travel documents are ranked 50th, giving easy access to 119 nations. China is placed 69th with access to 80 countries, India's passport ranked 87th with visa-free access to 60 countries and Afghanistan's passport, ranked 112th, is the least useful, getting the holder into only 27 countries. According to the Henley Passport Index, Japan and Singapore top the list of countries with strong passports on the global ranking. What this means is that; Japanese, British, Americans, Canadians and host of others with strong passports have visa-free access to most countries of the world. For most of African and South Asian countries, reverse is the case, their passports are classified as weak, this has over the years resulted into difficult immigration procedures for people of African and some of Asian origins. What is the rationale for the global classification of passports that created these disparities among countries of the world? Finding answers to these questions is the motivation for my podcast episode, UNEVEN BORDERS. I aim to seek these answers in a most objective manner in this episode. Through personal immigration experiences of Pooja, an international student from Indian at university of Sussex, I aim to have resourceful discussions on border issues and global passports classification as its affect the right to free movement of certain nationalities of the world.

The Henley Passport Index has released 2019's list of the world's most powerful passports. Henley & Partners, a London-based residence and global citizenship advisory firm, compiles the list and reveals it annually. It gathers data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which holds the largest database of travel information in the world. This year, the firm ranked 227 countries and territories, taking into account the number of destinations their citizens can visit even without obtaining a visa. Singapore and Japan are both at the top spot, with their passports granting visa-free access to 189 destinations. The two countries have held this position for 18 months after unseating Germany in early 2018. Finland, Germany, and South Korea hold the second spot, allowing their passport holders to visit 187 places without a visa. Denmark, Italy, and Luxembourg round out the third spot. The United Kingdom and the United States used to share the top spot in 2014 but have plummeted to sixth place, with both having a score of 183. This is the lowest rank that both have held since 2010. At the bottom of the list is Afghanistan, whose passport allows its citizens visa-free access to only 25 countries. Henley & Partners Chairman Dr. Christian H. Kaelin believes that the list shows that many countries recognize the importance of granting foreigners visa-free access to a country. He explained that welcoming foreigners can greatly contribute to a country's social and economic development and is beneficial to all countries in the world.
