The idea which it conveys also appears in earlier works such as Plato's Nomoi (Laws). Dr. Benjamin Doolitle (who was on episode 97) shared this poem with me and my department at our recent annual departmental retreat. Somewhat related to EP117 and William Deresiewicz's concept of being an excellent sheep that has lost the power of creativity, this poem reminds me that it is a continuous striving (at least for me) to focus on the truly important things.

Si algo estorba al idilio donde se manifiesta la literatura es improbable entonces que perdure. Resulta precario su equilibrio. Un texto no solo depende del autor cuando poco vale la experiencia y de nada la reflexión. Igitur

Leer algo que evoque llanuras despejadas y horizontes abiertos, exultante de esperanza, se vuelve necesario en tiempos coléricos. Así como uno no conoce el amor solo a través del romance, se aprenden lecciones de vida si reparamos en la ajena. Igitur

¿Por qué un autor talentoso tiene mayor renombre que otro equiparable en talento? Dar respuesta implica polemizar y no modifica el hecho. Julien Gracq (1910-2007) pertenece a una generación de la cual solo algunos escritores continúan leyéndose. Igitur

Reflexionar sobre la literatura resulta algo menos cotidiano que antes porque el análisis implica trabajo de crítica. Sin embargo, leer todo un libro puede eludirse hasta lo anecdótico: tomar atajos para sortear el “extenuante” proceso de lectura equivaldría a subrayar frases, señalar párrafos que, aun ignorando la trama íntegra alguien consiga entender. Hay escritores europeos para los que finalizando la guerra sobrevino el lirismo. Con carácter melancólico, elaboraron escenarios que ocupan personajes temerosos de morir y castigados por no vivir con suficiente recelo. Igitur

Evitar leer in extenso la obra de un autor implica elegir alguna pieza que reúna varios elementos de su lirismo. No en cualquier caso surge tal posibilidad, pero sí con Patrick Modiano (Francia, 1945), de los últimos ganadores del Premio Nobel de Literatura que nunca causó polémica. Igitur

Philippe Claudel (1962) porta en su nombre virtud y maldición: goza del apellido de un célebre poeta, pero carga el fardo de lo que implica en tanto referente. Sin embargo, ignorando el ejemplo de Paul Claudel. Igitur
