The phrase is adapted from a statement found in Roman author Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus's tract Dē Rē Mīlitārī (fourth or fifth century AD), in which the actual phrasing is Igitur quī dēsīderat pācem, præparet bellum ("Therefore let him who desires peace prepare for war"). The idea which it conveys also appears in earlier works such as Plato's Nomoi (Laws). The phrase presents the insight that the conditions of peace are often preserved by a readiness to make war to defend said peace when the need arises. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:12 UTC on Sunday, 27 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Si vis pacem, para bellum on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Nicole.

= Therefore, let us rejoice! This is a poem by Dr. John Stone, and every time I read it, I am reminded of some of the essential parts of doctoring, both good and bad. It's graduation season (schools as well as training programs) - please share with your graduates, particularly those in healthcare. Dr. Benjamin Doolitle (who was on episode 97) shared this poem with me and my department at our recent annual departmental retreat. Somewhat related to EP117 and William Deresiewicz's concept of being an excellent sheep that has lost the power of creativity, this poem reminds me that it is a continuous striving (at least for me) to focus on the truly important things.

The phrase presents the insight that the conditions of peace are often preserved by a readiness to make war when necessitated. (Click Here for Full Article)
[15] Beware of false prophets, who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. By their fruits you shall know them. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? a fructibus eorum cognoscetis eos. [17] Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, and the evil tree bringeth forth evil fruit. Sic omnis arbor bona fructus bonos facit : mala autem arbor malos fructus facit. [18] A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can an evil tree bring forth good fruit. [19] Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit, shall be cut down, and shall be cast into the fire. [20] Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them. Igitur ex fructibus eorum cognoscetis eos. [21] Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Igitur
In this episode, we look at the Hanc Igitur in the Roman Canon.
Igitur
In this fourth session of "Praying the Mass", Will explores the first section of the Roman Canon, the Te Igitur.
