What happens when a Hollywood star stands up to sexual harassment on set? In this episode, entertainment lawyer Anne Easton joins us to unravel the legal and ethical firestorm sparked by Blake Lively's recent case. Blake Lively made headlines by accusing her It Ends With Us co-star and director, Justin Baldoni, of sexual harassment — and then faced an alleged smear campaign in retaliation. Anne brings an insider perspective from the world of entertainment law, helping us make sense of this high-profile Hollywood showdown in a conversational, insightful way.We tackle tough questions around celebrity privacy and image rights — how much control can an actor really have over their image and personal information once a story goes public? We also examine how the Me Too movement has changed the film industry, and what it takes to create a truly safe workplace environment in filmmaking today.Anne breaks down the concept of retaliation in plain language, exploring whether smear campaigns like the one Lively alleges can be considered illegal retaliation under entertainment law. She highlights what legal protections exist for those who speak up against misconduct, and where gaps still need to be filled. From the role of intimacy coordinators on set to new laws designed to protect whistleblowers, we cover it all in a clear, down-to-earth way.Beyond this case, Anne's perspective — shaped by years of advising both major studios and independent filmmakers — adds nuance to every insight. She even shares a peek at her own upcoming creative nonfiction book project, revealing her passion for storytelling beyond the courtroom. It's a candid, eye-opening discussion that's equal parts Hollywood drama and practical advice on building safer, more respectful film sets. Tune in to learn how Hollywood is changing and what it means for anyone who wants a safer, more equitable filmmaking world. No DocuView Déjà Vu Timecodes00:00 Introduction to the Blake Lively Case03:12 Understanding the Legal Context06:04 The Background of the Case09:10 Claims of Sexual Harassment12:04 Retaliation and Public Perception14:52 Legal Implications for Filmmakers17:59 Creating a Safe Set Environment21:04 Navigating Power Dynamics on Set23:55 Preventative Measures in Filmmaking26:50 The Aftermath and Public Image Rights32:39 Legal Standards for Public Figures34:12 Image Rights and Public Figures36:32 The Importance of Image Rights40:42 Lessons from Blake Lively's Case42:27 Current Status of Legal Proceedings45:26 The Importance of Behavior in Legal Matters46:13 Understanding Your Rights in Media48:08 Anne's New Documentary Project Sponsor: http://ArtillerySports.com Use the code DocFirst for 10% off your order today!

The importance of tax for professional sports people, part two; in this episode with Martin Rankin, we discuss the tax liability issues contented with image rights.Listen to part one on ‘Current issues with agent’s fees’.What is an image right?Image rights concerns the various rights an individual holds of their own persona, it is something that is intangible and they rightfully exist in varying degrees for commercial appeal. For example, could be someone’s name, nickname, photograph, likeness, signature, personal brand, a slogan, logos associated with the player etc.One of the phrases that the tax authorities state is the concept of an image right is one that is not recognised under English Law. It certainly is recognised in other jurisdictions such as France, Germany, the US. The Guernsey authorities have now produced a register where a high-profile or not so high-profile individual; living or dead, can come forward with the executors (in the case of deceased person) to register image rights as an asset that is owned. Our sports and media podcast series hosted by Peter Fairchild our tax partner and head of our sports, media and entertainment group and Ed Duah, former football player and now football adviser, will provide you with information on various topics that will affect sports and media professionals in all stages of their career, including Insurance, image rights, legal matters, tax liability, wealth planning, and preparing for life after sport or entertainment.Unlike other professions, the sports, media and entertainment industry is volatile, with sports professionals in particular facing a limited earning capacity due to the average length of their career, compared to those who will work for a longer period of time. For example a professional footballer may have a maximum of 10 years at the height of their career, compared to an office worker who can work into their 60’s earning a steady income. An office worker could have a couple of difficult years with their financial planning and it wouldn’t make too much difference to their finances in retirement. Whereas for the sports professional, any gaps in their 10 year career, or poor financial planning during the high earning years, could make a huge difference to their retirement plan. The main focus of this series is designed to stress the importance of having the right plan and structure in place early on, understanding your earning capacity and what you should be doing with your money, especially at a young age when vast amounts of money could be coming in and the idea of retirement feels like a long way away. It’s vital to work closely with trusted professional advisers who can make sure you prepare for life now and in the future, and who can ensure your money will work hard for you during and after your career.
