Welcome back to the "Conversation Series" with this week's guest photojournalist David Butow. David and I met several decades ago and I've followed his career ever since. Photojournalism is a semi-misunderstood field but still serves as one of the most critical functions of photography, at least in my opinion. Working as a photojournalist involves training, a vetting process, and a serious responsibility. I've always viewed David as one of the "good guys" in this industry. His skill and commitment behind the camera are revealed by both his coverage and his awards. David worked in locations like Afghanistan, Myanmar, Iraq, Peru, and others. He covered stories on post 9/11 New York, the Palestine/Israeli Intifada, the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, the China earthquake in 2008, the funeral of Nelson Mandela, the Hong Kong protests of 2019, and spent the last five years covering politics in Washington. His list of awards includes World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year International, Photo District News, National Press Photographers Association, White House News Photographers' Association, Communication Arts, and more. David and I discuss his photographic origin story, his early training, his rise through the newspaper and magazine worlds, his work with US News and World Report Magazine, personal vs professional projects, the arrival and impact of the Internet and social media, and his incredible experience covering the events of January 6th, 2021. We also discuss his book "Brink," which details the entire arc of American politics from late 2015 to early 2021. As important as what we discussed is what we did not get to discuss due to time restraints. This is good news for all of you because it means there will be a second episode of my conversation with David. My goal with these talks is to introduce you to working photographers. Their life, their story, their training, their experience, and their understanding of what it means to dedicate your life to photography. In a world of influence, these are the folks that are actually rising at dawn to bake the bread. Photo: Roman Cho https://www.davidbutow.com/

I know a lot of photographers that work in multiple genres, but Kevin Jairaj is unique among them. One day he might be shooting a wedding, and a few days later college or pro sports. Then, on the days in-between, you might find him doing a fashion or boudoir shoot. What makes him unique is that he is very accomplished in each and every one of these fields. In just a few short years, Kevin has become one of the most sought after photographers working today, both in the USA and worldwide. He has done photoshoots, weddings, and events in London, Hawaii, Trinidad and Tobago, The Bahamas, Mexico, Jamaica, Anguilla, and Aruba, in addition to the work he shoots in Texas and the rest of the USA. Kevin is also a favorite among the celebrity crowd and has photographed weddings and events for many musicians, actors, and famous athletes. Kevin's accomplishments have been highly recognized, and rewarded. He is one of only a few people in the world to hold the Triple Master Title from WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International), as well as a Master of Photography from PPA (Professional Photographers of America). When it comes to competitions, Kevin is at the top of his craft, having won Numerous 1st Place Awards in the very prestigious WPPI 16×20 and 8x10 print competitions, as well as having several prints selected in the PPA Loan collection over the years. I mentioned wedding photography earlier, and his work in that world has also been highly recognized. He was named a Top Knots of Wedding Photography by the very well respected Photo District News magazine, and his book for wedding photographers, titled “Stylish Weddings”, was published by Amherst Media. Kevin is also sought after In the sports world. He was chosen by USA Today to take portraits of key members of the USA Summer and Winter Olympic Teams, as well as covering the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, and the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang for them. Add to all of this Kevin's recent win of 1st place in the basketball category in the 2022 World Sports Photography Awards! I feel like I have been studying Joe McNally's work since I first picked up a camera, so this should be the easiest show post I have ever done. He is an absolute master of light, and I own his "The Language of Light" Volume One, I need to get Volume Two. I have watched classes through KelbyOne and CreativeLive, and twice I have sat at the end of his PhotoshopWorld Keynotes wishing it wasn't over. Yeah, this should be easy. But no, this is a tough one. Joe McNally is a legend, and most anyone you ask would agree that he's one of the top photographers working today, perhaps ever. He is in that very elite group of photographers know as Nikon Ambassadors, along with the likes of Moose Peterson (who has been on the show twice - for Wildlife & Wild Places & Aviation Photography), Deborah Sandidge (who was on the show for the episode on Better Travel Photography), Todd Owyoung and others. Joe is also a Capture One Ambassador, a Gitzo Ambassador, and is affiliated with Printique (an Adorama company), Synology, Lastolite, Tether Tools, and Powerex. Writing about someone I respect as much as Joe creates a flood of thoughts, and putting them in the right order matters. Let me start here... Joe McNally won the first Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Journalistic Impact for a LIFE coverage titled, “The Panorama of War”. He has been honored numerous times by Communication Arts, PDN, Graphis, American Photo, POY, and The World Press Photo Foundation. His career has led to international acclaim, more awards than I could list here, and assignments that have taken him to 70 countries. With all of that said, we have only just begun to scratch the surface of Joe's career. Joe has shot numerous cover stories, and highly complex features, for legendary publications such as LIFE, National Geographic, and Sports Illustrated, along with cover stories for TIME, Newsweek, Fortune, New York, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, and Men's Journal. He has also managed to do something few people can... bridge the worlds of photojournalism and advertising. His client list includes FedEx, Sony, Nikon, Land's End, General Electric, MetLife, Adidas, American Ballet Theater, Epson, the Wildlife Conservation Society, ESPN, MAC Cosmetics, USAA, the New York Stock Exchange, and Lehman Brothers, and that's a short version. American Photo listed Joe as one of the 100 Most Important People in Photography, and described by the magazine as “perhaps the most versatile photojournalist working today", and in 2010 he was voted as one of the 30 most influential photographers of the decade in an industry wide Photo District News survey. As an educator, McNally is unequaled. He is an author, teacher, and highly sought after speaker. His newest book, "The Real Deal: Field Notes from the Life of a Working Photographer" - available through Rocky Nook or Amazon - was released on February 8, 2022. I pre-ordered it, and can't wait to read through it. In fact the photo we discuss on this show triggers a whole chapter in the book. His other titles include "Sketching Light", "The Hot Shoe Diaries", The Moment It Clicks", and "The Face of Ground Zero". The latter is based on Joe's "Faces of Ground Zero, Portraits of the Heroes of September 11, 2001 Collection", which consists of 246 Giant Polaroids - life-size photos (9' x 4') shot during a three-week period shortly after September 11, 2001, with additional images shot in 2002. I mentioned above my experience watching Joe give a Keynote at PhotoshopWorld a few years ago. Joe McNally is hands down the best I have ever seen. I don't know how to even begin to describe his speaking and teaching ability. All I can do is suggest that, given the opportunity, you don't miss him on stage. Be sure to check out his classes too, like The Language of Light class mentioned above, or through places like KelbyOne and CreativeLive. I can only imagine how great his live workshops are, and,

Dale O'Dell was born in Dallas, Texas in 1959. He was given his first camera at the age of 13 and at that moment he knew what he wanted to do in life. As a teen, photography was the perfect blend of art and science and Dale immersed himself in the aesthetics and chemistry of the photographic process. In 1982 he received a degree in Photography from Sam Houston State University. After a series of irritating Corporate Jobs (including a year-long stint as a computer artist --in 1983, no less) he realized that, in the corporate world at least, he was unemployable and opened his own studio in 1986.During his early years, Dale became familiar with virtually every photographic process and used them all at one time or another. As one of the early adopters of digital technology, one of Dale's early digital images made history in 1983 when it became the first wholly computer-generated image published in advertising. In 1994 Dale moved from Houston, Texas, to Prescott, in the mountains of central Arizona. Since transitioning from Analog Photography to Digital Art Dale's artworks have been extensively exhibited and published world-wide. Since 1997 Dale has published over a dozen photography books. Dale accepts both fine-art and commercial commissions. As a fine artist Dale has exhibited in over one-hundred group and solo exhibitions; as a commercial photographer he's produced photography and photo/digital illustration for an international clientele including many of the Fortune 500 companies. Dale also provides stock photography. He's also a writer and has written for many magazines including Photo District News, PC Photo, E-Digital Photo, LensWork, Professional Photographer and many others. If you thought tintypes were only from the olden days, you may be surprised to learn that the tintypes are still being produced today. Those dark tin images in your family collection don't begin to show off the beauty of a tintype.  Modern tintypes are amazing.  The subtle colors let us imagine what those varnished ones of our ancestors must have looked like once. Suddenly the allure of a tin photo is clear. They are gorgeous portraits, ones that our relatives once relished.  My guest uses a historic camera to take tintypes today using historical processes.  The results  are stunning. There is depth, character, and shades of milky tones in his pictures. It's no wonder he is in demand as a portraitist. There is a revival of historic processes from daguerreotypes and more. John Caulker, Founder and Executive Director of Fambul Tok, a peace-building NGO based in Sierra Leone, believes that true healing and reconciliation can only take place through a community-led process. Documentary filmmaker Sara Terrytells this amazing story in her award-winning film, Fambul Tok, where victims and perpetrators of Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war come together for the first time in an unprecedented program of tradition-based truth-telling and forgiveness ceremonies. Through reviving their ancient practice of fambul tok (family talk), Sierra Leoneans are building sustainable peace at the grass-roots level. Filled with lessons for the West, the film explores the depths of a culture that believes true justice lies in redemption and healing for individuals and that forgiveness is the surest path to restoring dignity and building strong communities. Join us for an inspiring discussion with John Caulker and Sara Terry on how Sierra Leone is advancing peace by mobilizing ordinary people in the hard work of reconciliation. The program will also feature special guest the First Lady of Sierra Leone Her Excellency Fatima Maada Bio. John Caulker is the Founder and Executive Director of Fambul Tok and has led the implementation of the Fambul Tok program since its inception in 2007. John became a human rights activist as a student leader during the initial years of the war in Sierra Leone. Risking his life to document wartime atrocities, he infiltrated rebel camps disguised as a rebel to gather information and stories to pass along to international organizations such as Amnesty International, Article 19, and Human Rights Watch. He founded Forum of Conscience as a human rights NGO in Sierra Leone in 1996. As Executive Director of Forum of Conscience, John strove to prevent recurring violence by connecting the root causes of Sierra Leone’s brutal conflict to the need for rural community participation in the national decision making process and acknowledgement of wrong doing to victims through the reparations program. As the national chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Working Group, John pressured the government of Sierra Leone to implement the recommendations of the TRC’s 2004 report. Sara Terry is the Producer/Director of Fambul Tok, her first feature-length documentary. A former award-winning reporter for the Christian Science Monitor, Sara made a mid-career transition into photojournalism and documentary photography in the late 1990s. The focus of her work since has been post-conflict societies. Her long-term project about the aftermath of war in Bosnia — “Aftermath: Bosnia’s Long Road to Peace” — was published in September 2005 by Channel Photographics, and chosen as one of the best books of the year by Photo District News. Her work has been widely published and exhibited at such venues as the United Nations, Moving Walls/Open Society, the Museum of Photography in Antwerp, and the Leica Gallery in Solms, Germany. She is the founder of The Aftermath Project, a nonprofit grant program helping photographers cover the aftermath of conflict and building educational outreach and partnerships around the understanding that “war is only half the story.” Presented in partnership with the Edina Senior Center, Friends of the Edina Library, Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library, Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central, Landmark Center, Minneapolis Public Schools Community Education, Plymouth Library, and Washburn Library.

Today, Jason is going to show us how to harness the passion and energy we feel for a topic and craft it into a photographic book. I feel like Jason and I have very similar viewpoints on life...where the interesting parts lie in the "under layers." It's just that HE'S figured out how to take all those interesting pieces and put them together into fascinating, well-crafted book projects. His first project was shooting Carnaval in Brazil, and he's currently developing the project “Carnaval: Rituals, Roots and Rebels.” That means he's traveling the world photographing little-known Carnaval celebrations in places like Bulgaria, Slovenia, Poland, Basque country, Spain, Dunkerque, France, Guinea-Bissau, Sardinia, the Tyrol mountains of Italy and Austria, Trinidad, Bahamas, New Orleans, and Cajun country in Louisiana. Just to name a few. The photographs are amazing...and the stories? The stories are unique invitations into worlds seldom seen. We've ALL got interests, but few of us know how to capture that excitement into a medium you can distribute and share. Follow Jason's advice however? You'll be well on your way to helping others feel the same passion that you do through a beautiful photography book. Want more? Anecdotes with insight are an important part of any good conversation, and we certainly heard some wonderful anecdotes from our guests at the OPTIC 2018 Conference. For today’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we have cherry-picked a few stories from our conversations with Brian Smith, Seth Resnick, Vincent Versace, and Simon Lewis and have added a segment, with Panasonic Marketing Manager Darin Pepple, to round out the episode. Brian Smith is a Pulitzer-Prize-winning photographer most recognized for celebrity portraiture, but his work comfortably crosses all genres and his list of awards is impressive, including a World Press Photo Award. He is a Sony Artisan of Imagery, Profoto Legend of Light, Adobe Influencer, and X-Rite Master Coloratti. As a luxury lifestyle, destination, food, architecture, and interior photographer, Simon Lewis also understands that versatility is a crucial component to being a successful freelance photographer and, as his anecdote makes clear, some tenacity helps, too. His clients include Aman Resorts, Amazon, JetBlue, Ralph Lauren, Bon Appetit, Prada, and John Varvatos. Seth Resnick can do it all (I’m seeing a trend) and the graphic nature of his work and bold use of color and form make him in-demand across the editorial, travel, commercial, and fine art photography worlds.  Chosen by Photo District News as one of the 30 most influential photographers of the decade, he was an original Canon “Explorer of Light,” consults for Adobe, X-Rite, and Epson, is an Ilford “Master” and is co-founder of D-65, a digital workflow consultancy. A few of our guests’ anecdotes were prompted by Allan’s “rabbit out of a hat” question but, with Vincent Versace, we were captivated and laughing too hard to even get to the question. Versace’s insight on photography comes from a range of disciplines and we learn how acting and some serious common sense influence his work. He is a Nikon Ambassador, recipient of the Smithsonian Award in Media Arts & Entertainment and his photography books, tutorials, and workshops are very popular. After a short break, we speak with Darin Pepple, Consumer Marketing Manager at Panasonic, about Lumix cameras, the evolution of the GH series, and the unique interaction between Lumix photographers and the product developers who continue to improve this innovative camera line. Her latest project, Talk to Me, is a mixed media installation of portraits of women. Buckler’s ongoing investigation of women’s bodies was spurred by her disfigurement brought on by a life-threatening disease. The project offers women a common ground to explore their emotional core through their own bodies. Dishing with Delishes Podcast | Interviewing Food Bloggers | Help Food Bloggers Grow Their Business | Learn From Others Succe

Sara Forte discovered a love for whole foods when she volunteered at an organic farm while working towards her English degree at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. This interest led to an internship in Italy at a bed and breakfast/cooking school, jobs at a few different markets, and eventually to creating a food blog, Sprouted Kitchen, that she produces with her husband Hugh. Sara writes recipes and stories about life while Hugh documents the couple's whole food approach to eating well. Sara has written two cookbooks, The Sprouted Kitchen, which was nominated for a James Beard in the Healthy Cookbooks Category, and Sprouted Kitchen: Bowl + Spoon. Sara's work is featured in InStyle, Better Home & Gardens, Sunset and Fine Cooking. The blog has been recognized by Saveur for Best Food Photography and Best Food Blog. Sara continues to work on a third book; she freelances in recipe development; and she is a personal chef and mother of two toddlers. Sara and Hugh currently live in Dana Point, California: working, eating and inspiring people to cook fresh, real food. Hugh Forte is a self-taught photographer – an endeavor that was born from traveling and wanting to document the life playing out around him. While Hugh focuses most of his energy on wedding and lifestyle commissions, he created Sprouted Kitchen as a gift to Sara, for them to have a creative outlet together – her cooking and him documenting - and has since begun to experiment with a fresh approach to the art of food photography. With an aesthetic inspired largely by the natural beauty of the subject, his talent is perfectly paired with Sara’s cooking style. Hugh’s work has been recognized by the Smithsonian, Photo District News and Conde Nast. While photography is both his profession and passion, Hugh’s time is also invested in great books, fun waves, and the pursuit of a really good cup of coffee.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Peter van Agtmael was born in Washington DC in 1981. He studied history at Yale University, where his interest in journalism led him to take a photography course, during which he had an almost mystical experience and realised immediately that he'd found his calling.  His work largely concentrates on America, looking at issues of conflict, identity, power, race and class. He also works extensively on the Israel/Palestine conflict and throughout the Middle East.   He has won the W. Eugene Smith Grant, the ICP Infinity Award for a Young Photographer, the Lumix Freelens Award, the Aaron Siskind Grant, a Magnum Foundation Grant as well as awards from World Press Photo, American Photography Annual, POYi, The Pulitzer Center, The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, FOAM and Photo District News.  Peter joined Magnum Photos in 2008 and became a full member in 2013. His book, Disco Night Sept 11, is a chronicle of America's wars in the post-9/11 era from 2006-2013. The photographs shift back and forth from Iraq and Afghanistan to the USA, unsparingly capturing the violent, ceaseless cost, but also the mystery and the madness, the beauty and absurdity at the core of each conflict. The narrative is complemented by nineteen gatefolds which elaborate on places and individuals. The book was released in 2014 by Red Hook Editions, a Brooklyn-based publishing venture of which Peter is a founder and partner. Disco Night Sept 11 was shortlisted for the Aperture/Paris Photo Book Award and was named a ‘Book of the Year’ by The New York Times Magazine, Time Magazine, Mother Jones, Vogue, American Photo and Photo Eye.  You can still order a copy direct from Red Hook Editions. Peter's most recent book, the sequel to Disco Night..., is Buzzing at the Sill, a book about America in the shadows of the wars and about coming home from years of covering conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan and trying to understand his experiences and his country. The work is a stew of reflections on war, memory, militarism, identity, race, class, family, surrealism and the landscape.

The Marie Manuchehri Show...Where Energy and Medicine Meet

THE GREATER GOOD is an award winning character-driven documentary that explores the cultural intersections where parenting meets modern medicine and individual rights collide with politics. The film offers parents, doctors and policy makers a safe space to speak openly, actively listen and learn from one another. Mixing verité footage, intimate interviews, 1950s-era government-produced movies and up-to-date TV news reporting, THE GREATER GOOD weaves together the stories of families whose lives have been forever changed by vaccination. Writer / Producer, Leslie Manookian was a successful Wall Street business executive and is now a documentary film producer and activist. Manookian chose to leave Wall Street at the height of her career in order to pursue a more meaningful path. Her career in finance took her from New York to London with Goldman Sachs. She later became Director of Alliance Capital in London running their European Growth Portfolio Management and Research business. While living and working in London, she learned of the vaccine debate and determined that one day she would make a documentary exploring the issue. The award winning documentary The Greater Good is the result of 11 years of work. She has been featured in dozens of TV, radio, print and internet interviews as well as appearing at numerous conferences discussing vaccine issues. She has been featured in a cover article in Barron's as well as in other financial publications. She has served on the board, managed or consulted for many organizations in her community and successfully led the charge to defeat a proposed coal plant in her state and helped secure legislation providing consumer access to raw milk. She holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and a BA from Middlebury College. Director / Producer, Kendall Nelson was raised in California, where she attended San Francisco State University and the Brooks Institute of Photography. Nelson's photographs are exhibited in museums and art galleries nationwide and her images have been featured by numerous publications, including National Geographic Online, Camera Arts, Photo District News, and USA Today. Nelson's fascination with diversity and culture has led her to photograph a wide range of subjects—from herdsmen in Mongolia to women's health issues in Africa with the United Nations. In addition to her career as a still photographer, she worked as a segment producer and assistant director at Fox Television before moving to Sun Valley, Idaho, where she began traveling the West photographing cowboys. She published her first book Gathering Remnants – A Tribute to the Working Cowboy in 2000. Following the success of her book, Nelson was determined to tell the cowboys' stories on film. She completed an award-winning documentary also titled Gathering Remnants, which aired on European and Canadian television.
