The episode also features a lively exchange with the show's resident AI co-host, Nancy, as they grapple with the promises and pitfalls of blending human and artificial intelligence in education. Key takeaways include the need for thoughtful design in integrating AI with human empathy, the potential for chatbots to serve as "empathy engines," and the importance of keeping humans in the loop while leveraging AI's scalability. Joanna Oltman Smith was new to direct action when she agreed to walk into the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. with fellow activist Tim Martin, smear water-soluble kids' finger paint on the glass display case containing a Degas statue called "Little Dancer", and read off a statement about the importance of protecting actual, living children as well as we do sculptures of them. Smith and Martin figured they would be charged with trespassing, and maybe even vandalism, but each is now facing two felony charges, including one of "conspiring against the United States government." As we covered last month, one thing that makes it easy to criminalize protest is the steady hum of content that paints climate activists as fringe weirdos or out-of-touch elitists. Over the course of the last two centuries, the American slaughterhouse has been carefully designed to function as a site of legal exception, where violence against both animals and workers—many of whom are immigrants and people of color—is hidden from the public's gaze, while being rendered licit. In today's episode of Interactions, we hear from Ph.D. candidate Joanna Smith of UNC Chapel Hill as she examines how slaughterhouses function much like a sacred spaces. They are hidden from sight. They maintain exceptional status to the law. And they are a place where violence against both animals and workers proliferates--a violence that now includes the spread of COVID-19. The changes made by the U.S. government that allowed slaughterhouses to both stay open during outbreaks and to opt out of health guidelines are just one example of slaughterhouses being an exception to the rule. But it's an exception that has had deadly consequences. To date, thousands of slaughterhouse workers have contracted COVID-19. Over two hundred have died.
