Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
Mid Atlantic dissects a chaotic week in American politics marked by an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and the consequential nomination of J.D. Vance as his running mate. Host Roifield Brown, broadcasting from Birmingham, leads a panel including Ira Shapiro, Michael Donoghue, Denise Hamilton, and Aaron Fisher, who share their insights and reactions to these seismic events.Panelists' Initial Reactions:Denise Hamilton was home watching a 90s movie when she heard the news. She believes it was the act of a mentally ill individual rather than a politically motivated attack.Michael Donoghue Appreciates the Democratic leadership's denouncement of political violence and hopes for a quick return to political normalcy.Ira Shapiro sees this incident as another tragic example of America's endemic gun violence. He believes it has already started to fade from public focus, returning to the pre-assassination political landscape.Aram Fischer was driving back from a progressive political conference. He hoped the shooter wasn't from the left and emphasised the potential catastrophic consequences if Trump had been seriously injured.Key Discussions:Polarisation and Violence: The panel agrees that the assassination attempt highlights the dangerous polarisation in American politics, reflecting deep societal divisions.Impact on the Election: While some panelists think the attempt might briefly shift public sympathy towards Trump, they don't believe it will significantly alter the tight race between Biden and Trump.Trump's Nomination of J.D. Vance: The panel sees Vance's nomination as a cynical move that reinforces Trump's base rather than expanding his appeal. Vance's controversial past statements and policy stances are seen as unlikely to attract younger voters or moderates.Final Thoughts: The assassination attempt, while shocking, seems to have limited long-term impact on the political landscape. The Democratic Party faces internal debates over Biden's candidacy, while Trump's choice of Vance suggests a doubling down on his core support rather than a strategic shift to broaden his appeal. The episode underscores the intense and often volatile nature of contemporary American politics.Quotes:"The attempted assassination shows just how dangerous our political divisions have become." - Ira Shapiro"Trump's nomination of J.D. Vance is doubling down on his base, not expanding it." - Denise Hamilton"My first thought was, I hope he's not seriously injured. And I really hope the shooter isn't on my side of politics." - Aram Fisher"It's a reminder that our political rhetoric needs to be toned down." - Michael Donoghue Hosted on Acast. Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
In this episode of Mid Atlantic, host Roifield Brown leads a discussion with an expert panel featuring Ira Shapiro, Aram Fisher, Steve O'Neill, Tonye Altrade, and Michael Donoghue. The main focus is on the launch of the UK party manifestos and the impact they may have as the general election approaches. The panelists examine key pledges from the Conservative, Labour, and Liberal Democrat parties, analysing their potential influence on voters. The discussion also covers recent events in US politics, including President Joe Biden's response to his son Hunter Biden's conviction and the significance of a recent meeting between Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump. The panelists debate the implications of these developments and the broader state of American politics as the 2024 election season heats up.Key QuotesSteve O'Neill on UK Party Manifestos: "The thing with manifestos, they are in some way shopping lists of policies, but they also tell a story. Labour's manifesto tries to tell a story about the kind of government Keir Starmer wants to run."Tonye Altrade on the Conservative Manifesto: "There was no story whatsoever I could glean from the Conservative manifesto. It was a ramshackle of different things, some bold, some pandering to far-right wingers."Mike Donoghue on US Politics: "It's a brutal time to be an incumbent president. When you've got a country that seems angry, divided, depressed, they tend to blame the incumbent for everything."Ira Shapiro on Mitch McConnell and Trump: "McConnell staying with Trump despite their differences shows the extent of partisanship. It's clear McConnell will support the nominee, no matter who it is."Aram Fisher on Biden's Strategy: "Biden has taken steps to re-engage with black voters, appearing alongside Kamala Harris in Philadelphia. How effective this will be remains to be seen, but it's a crucial part of his campaign strategy." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Thank you for being part of the conversation. This is Play It Forward. Real people. Real stories. The struggle to Play It Forward Episode 623 with U.S. Ambassador Ira Shapiro the author of The Betrayal How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America. The Founding Fathers gave the U.S. Senate many functions, but it had one fundamental responsibility—its raison d'etre: to provide the check against a dangerous president who threatened our democracy. Two hundred and thirty years later, when Donald Trump, a potential authoritarian, finally reached the White House, the Senate should have served as both America's first and last lines of defense. Instead, we had the nightmare scenario: today's Senate, reduced through a long period of decline to a hyper-partisan, gridlocked shadow of its former self, was unable to meet its fundamental responsibility. Shapiro documents the pivotal challenges facing the Senate during the Trump administration, arguing that the body's failure to provide leadership represents the most catastrophic failure of government in American history. The last section of the book covers the Senate's performance during President Biden's first year in office and looks forward to the 2022 Senate elections and beyond.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
On Feb 28, 2024, Mitch McConnell announced that he would step down as Republican Senate leader in November, ending his record-setting tenure. But McConnell is not going quietly into the night. He has taken the lead in attacking the Democrats over the Israel -Gaza war. He endorsed Donald Trump, despite the fact they despise each other. He continues to press for aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. He remains the Republican's most powerful fundraiser in his quest to recapture a Senate majority.Ira Shapiro, the author of The Betrayal: How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America (Rowman & Littlefield; 2022 & updated paperback May 14, 2024), is an unquestioned authority on the Senate and Senator McConnell, known for both his harsh indictment of McConnell and his fairness in analyzing him. The paperback edition of The Betrayal, updated to cover the tumultuous events of the past two years, will be released on May 14, 2024.Ira Shapiro's forty-five-year Washington career has focused on American politics and international trade. Shapiro served twelve years in senior staff positions in the U.S. Senate, working for Senators Jacob Javits, Gaylord Nelson, Abraham Ribicoff, Thomas Eagleton, Robert Byrd, and Jay Rockefeller. Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
Roifield Brown and panel navigate through the turbulent political climates of both the United States and the UK, focusing on two major stories that have captured headlines and stirred considerable debate. The episode unfolds against the backdrop of Florida's contentious new six-week abortion law and the anticipation of a landslide victory for the Labour Party in the UK's next general election. The discussion on Florida's abortion law reveals a deep-seated concern over reproductive rights, with critics arguing that the law, which imposes mandatory in-person doctor visits and a 24-hour waiting period, acts as a de facto total ban on abortion. Panelists, including Mike Donoghue from Los Angeles and Ira Shapiro from Maryland, unpack the implications of such legislation, noting its potential to drastically alter the outcome of the November election. They delve into the political underpinnings of the law, emphasising its alignment with a broader Republican agenda to restrict abortion access across the country. The conversation also touches on the judicial dynamics at play, with Shapiro providing insight into how the Florida Supreme Court could overturn decades of precedent, hinting at a politically motivated judiciary under Governor DeSantis's influence.Transitioning to the UK, the podcast explores the significant political shift indicated by recent polls, suggesting a monumental victory for the Labour Party. Such a scenario raises questions about the potential for sweeping policy reforms under a Labour government led by Keir Starmer. Panelists, including Mike Holden from Burnley and Leah Brown from Lancashire, express a mix of optimism and caution, highlighting the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Labour, particularly in addressing pressing issues like the National Health Service and climate change.Bullet Points :Florida's Six Week Abortion Law:The law's implications for women's rights and reproductive freedoms.Political motivations behind the law and its potential effects on elections. The role of the judiciary and the possibility of overturning the law through a ballot measure.UK Labour Party's Potential Victory:Predictions of a landslide victory for Labour and its implications. The potential for policy reforms in health service, climate change, and economic policy. The role of leadership and public opinion in shaping political outcomes.Key Quotes from the Podcast:On Florida's Abortion Law: "This regulation... effectively acts as a total ban, complicating abortion access dramatically as political and social opposition mounts."On Political Strategy: "It's pretty clear their real goal is a full zero... targeting IVF, rules against abortion for rape and incest survivors."On the UK's Labour Victory Prediction: "We're at a historic juncture with the Conservative Party facing what could be one of its most devastating electoral defeats in recent history."On Leadership and Decision-Making: "It comes down to a misunderstanding of what it means and looks like to be a leader... people generally don't necessarily have a willingness to learn from lessons of those who have come before them."On Public Ownership and Policy Reform: "The one thing an incumbent Labour government should do is to say water, we're going to take that back into public ownership." Host Roifield Brown engages with Ira Shapiro, the author of "The Betrayal," to dissect the legacy of Senator Mitch McConnell. The discussion delves into McConnell's significant yet contentious 17-year tenure as the top Republican in the U.S. Senate, a period marked by strategic mastery and polarizing partisanship. Shapiro, offering insights from his comprehensive examination of McConnell's career, paints a portrait of a politician whose actions have indelibly shaped American politics. The episode explores McConnell's complex persona, acknowledging his unparalleled skill in navigating parliamentary procedure while critiquing his staunchly partisan approach. The conversation underscores McConnell's influential role in obstructing the Obama presidency and facilitating the Trump administration's judicial appointments, framing these actions as pivotal moments that define his legacy. The episode is an in-depth analysis of McConnell's first major political manoeuvre against campaign finance reform, highlighting his enduring impact on the role of money in politics. The episode also addresses McConnell's strategic decisions during key moments, such as the blocking of Merrick Garland's Supreme Court nomination, illustrating his prioritisation of party over country. The podcast provides a nuanced perspective on McConnell's legacy, balancing admiration for his political acumen with critical scrutiny of his partisanship and its implications for American democracy.Quotes"I have a sneaking admiration for Mitch McConnell. I think he is that Machiavellian master of the dark arts of parliamentary procedure. And there is something, even though I dislike every one of his policies, I admire him for that.""My problem is that Senator McConnell has functioned totally as a partisan. Our system is a little different and complicated because it requires some degree of minority cooperation." "He tarnished and diminished the Obama presidency through his obstruction. He made the Trump presidency through his ramming through of the Supreme Court nominees after blocking Merrick Garland's nomination.""The first and continuing work of McConnell has been to maximize the power of money in politics, and he was very successful at it."Further Reading"The Betrayal: How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America" by Ira ShapiroThis book provides an in-depth look at McConnell's tenure and his impact on American politics, focusing on his actions during key moments and their implications for democracy. In episode 1975, Andrew talks to Ira Shapiro, author of THE BETRAYAL, about what he sees as Mitch McConnell's grave and unprecedented crime against American democracy.Ira Shapiro spent the first half of his 45 year Washington career as a Senate staffer and Clinton administration trade ambassador before writing a series of books about the Senate which William A. Galston, Brookings scholar, calls an "epic trilogy." Mr. Shapiro's current book, to be released on May 17, is The Betrayal: How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America. Robert B. Reich said: "Ira Shapiro holds Mitch McConnell and the Republican Senate accountable for their deliberate and catastrophic failure to stop Donald Trump even when American lives and American democracy were at stake. A gripping narrative and a must-read." Ira's first book, The Last Great Senate: Courage and Statesmanship in Times of Crisis (2012), was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Richard A. Baker, Senate Historian emeritus, described it as "a historically and politically artistic work of great brilliance." Ira's second book, Broken: Can the Senate Save Itself and the Country? (2018), also received critical acclaim. Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State, called it "an unflinching account...which takes a wider lens to describe how dysfunction in the Senate helped open the door to Donald Trump."Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Ira Shapiro - Author, International Lawyer, Consultant, Former Ambassador and Chronicler of the United States Senate. He joins Tavis to discuss the 5 Senate races that will decide who controls the U.S Senate and unpack his new book, “The Betrayal: How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America” which completes what William A. Galston, Brookings scholar, called an “epic trilogy,” capturing sixty years of Senate history.
Ira Shapiro's recent book, The Betrayal: How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America, chronicles the US Senate during the Trump presidency. As a veteran scholar and former Senate staffer with bipartisan experience, Shapiro determines that the Senate and its Republican members, led by Mitch McConnell (R-KY), ultimately abandoned late Senator John McCain's (R-AZ) guiding principle 'Country first'. Can the Senate recover its purpose and help resolve legislation to address America's fundamental challenges? What does the future hold for Mitch McConnell, arguably the most powerful Republican Senate leader ever, in the context of the upcoming midterm elections in November? What do the US midterms mean for Australia? To discuss these issues, the United States Studies Centre hosted a webinar featuring Ira Shapiro and Bill Kristol, editor-at-large of The Bulwark, Director of Defending Democracy Together, former chief of staff to Vice President Dan Quayle and one of the most incisive Republican intellectuals and commentators, in conversation with USSC CEO Dr Mike Green and Non-Resident Senior Fellow Bruce Wolpe.
Jearlyn discusses the rare occurrence of the U.S. Senate passing a bill on a Sunday. Is this a sign of more legislation to come? Speaking of the Senate, Ira Shapiro focuses on a key member of that government body in his new book. He joins the program to talk about it.
It's well known that Congress has become very hyper-parisan. While both sides of the political isle have a part in making this a reality, author Ira Shapiro trained his focus on one distinct person for his new book. He joins the program to talk about the effort, "Betrayal: How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America."
Longtime Capitol Hill vet and author Ira Shapiro joins the podcast to discuss how Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans have thumbed their nose at institutional norms and reneged on their duty as public servants to help create our current bitterly divided United States of America.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Ira Shapiro, former Ambassador and author of such books as The Last Great Senate: Courage and Statesmanship in Times of Crisis and Broken: Can the Senate Save Itself and the Country?, joins the show to discuss his book The Betrayal: How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America. We begin by discussing Newt Gingrinch and his "politics of destruction", the declining faith in the Senate as an instituinon, and the polarization of the United States of America. We then turn our attention to Mitch McConnell and how he went from a "moderate Republican" to moving, alongside the GOP, further to the Right. McConnell, Shapiro argues, has broke from his responsibility to serve the national interest in favor of partisanship that serves the interest of the GOP. In this regard we delve into McConnell's "Bitter Harvest" in the Obama years and the broken politics and government dysfunction that plagued America even before the Presidency of Donald J. Trump. From there we move onto the relationship between Donald Trump and McConnell; the Supreme Court, tax cuts for the rich, and anti-Affordable Care Act priorities of McConnell; McConnell and the donor base of the Republican Party; the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court; beating the Democratic Party at all costs; the 2020 Presidential Election and the Jan. 6th Insurrection; Under Secretary of State George Ball's quote from the Vietnam War era "He who rides the tiger cannot chose where he dismounts"; the Senate going forward; thoughts on diplomacy; and much, much more! In the second segment of the show, true crime author Lis Wiehl, whose previous books include Hunting the Unabomber and The Hunting Charles Manson, joins the show for a conversation about her new book A Spy in Plain Sight: The Inside Story of the FBI and Robert Hanssen—America's Most Damaging Russian Spy. Rober Hanssen is perhaps one of the most notorious spies in modern American history. While working for the FBI he decided to start working with the Soviet Union and the Russians. After all was said and done, he became the most damaging spy in American history whose actions had massive ramifications for national security. Our guest on the program is former trade ambassador and best selling author, Ira Shapiro! Adam and Ira discuss his new book, "The Betrayal: How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America". Ira Shapiro's new book The Betrayal is a look at the McConnell senate and turns his gaze to how the Senate responded to the challenges posed by the Trump administration and its prospects under President Biden. We discuss the book as well as ask our own questions about arguably the most important body in US government.Get the book here: https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Betrayal.html?id=7qleEAAAQBAJ&source=kp_book_descriptionIn two previous highly regarded books on the U.S. Senate, Ira Shapiro chronicled the institution from its apogee in the 1970s through its decline in the decades since. Now, Shapiro turns his gaze to how the Senate responded to the challenges posed by the Trump administration and its prospects under President Biden. The Founding Fathers gave the US Senate many functions, but it had one fundamental responsibility—its raison d'etre: to provide the check against a dangerous president who threatened our democracy. The last section covers the Senate's performance during President Biden's first year in office and looks forward to the 2022 Senate elections and beyond.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Ira Shapiro - His 45-year Washington career has focused on American politics and international trade. Shapiro served twelve years in senior staff positions in the U.S. Senate, working for a series of distinguished senators. He joins Tavis to unpack his new book “The Betrayal: How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America” where he turns his gaze to how the Senate responded to the challenges posed by the Trump administration and its prospects under President Biden (Hour 2)
In our lifetime and in the 246-year history of the republic, there was a time when great men walked astride the United States Senate. It was the crucible of democracy. Once referred to as the greatest deliberative body, and a cooling saucer to modulate the nation's passions, it now fails on all counts. Today it's filled with small-minded men and women, whose desire for reelection, money, and partisan advancement over the interests of the people, rules the day. And while there may be more crazies and corruption on one side, the other side has proven itself to be weak freckles and lacking in imagination. All of which makes them just bad at politics. Certainly, the “how we got here” is a complicated story. There is plenty of blame to go around. However, since 2006, when he became minority leader, Mitch McConnell has sucked dry any moral compass the Senate might have. McConnell's actions during the Obama and Trump presidency may mark the end of the Senate as we know it. Whether it also marks the end of democracy is for today at least, an open question. That's the question that Senate historian Ira Shapiro takes up in his new look at McConnell Betrayal How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America. My conversation with Ira Shapiro:
According to Ira Shapiro, the Founding Fathers gave the US Senate many functions, but one fundamental responsibility was to provide the check against a dangerous president who threatened our democracy. Two hundred and thirty years later, when Donald Trump, a potential authoritarian, finally reached the White House, the Senate should have served as both America's first and last lines of defense. Ira Shapiro the author of The Betrayal: How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America, forty-five-year Washington career has focused on American politics and international trade. Shapiro has served twelve years in senior staff positions in the U.S. Senate. Join us when Ira Shapiro examines the pivotal challenges the Senate underwent during the Trump administration, arguing that the body's failure to provide leadership represented the most catastrophic failure of government in American history. As well as the Senate's performance during President Biden's first year in office, the 2022 Senate elections and beyond, on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large.
Tonight on the Last Word: Many Republican candidates back Donald Trump's election lies. Also, the January 6 Committee denies the Justice Department's requests for transcripts. Plus, the Pennsylvania GOP Senate primary vote counting continues. And a new book details Mitch McConnell's role in the Senate under Trump. Rep. Madeleine Dean, Eddie Glaude, Stuart Stevens, Neal Katyal, Tim O'Brien, Tim Miller and Ira Shapiro join Lawrence O'Donnell.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and John brings to light many concepts involving these issues in America. He then speaks with Ira Shapiro, author of “The Betrayal” about Mitch McConnell's destruction of the Senate as it was envisioned by the Founding Fathers. Finally a moving call from Teresa in NC who shared some raw and real thoughts about her daughter's suicide death that are ultimately as beautiful in their memory as they are sad in their facts.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

"The Republicans cannot stop the full truth from coming out," Rep. Ted Lieu tells Joy Reid, as he joins The ReidOut to discuss the Republican Party apparently turning a blind eye to any responsibility Donald Trump bears for the Jan. 6 insurrection. About today's GOP, politics expert Stuart Stevens adds, "I think the only way to save the Republican Party is to burn the current Republican Party to the ground." Next, as the filibuster controversy continues to rage and the voting rights bill faces an uphill battle in the Senate, former Hill staffer Ira Shapiro says that in his view President Biden, "won't let the nation's progress be held back by the Senate's filibuster rule." Then, former member of the Obama administration Ben Rhodes joins us to discuss his new book, and what the state of international politics says about the status of our democracy. Plus, Phill Wilson, president and CEO of the Black AIDS Institute, joins Joy Reid as we commemorate this country recognizing the dawn of the AIDS epidemic, forty years ago tomorrow. All this and more, in this Friday edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.

The Senate might be the most tradition-soaked institution in America. But it's had relatively few impeachment trials since the founding. Now it has a big one on its hands, which is in full swing as of Tuesday. Senate expert Ira Shapiro, former staff member and author of two books on the Senate, joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin in studio with insight into how this will affect the institution itself.
Searching for Howard Baker Howard Baker was a key member of the US Senate during the Watergate hearings in the Nixon era. A key ally of President Nixon in the months leading up to the Watergate hearings, Baker was moved by the evidence and the historic responsibility of the moment and he rose to the occasion and assured his role in history by becoming a leader in the movement to remove President Nixon from office. Wayne King speaks with Ira Shapiro, author of "'Broken' Can the United States Senate save itself and the country?" This interview is a follow up to an earlier interview with Shapiro focused on shifting realities around the impeachment hearings of President Donald Trump.

Ira walks us through the process of how trade deals and their implementation work. From his experience working on NAFTA to working as Chief of Staff for a Senator, he sheds light on what is a uniquely opaque topic, trade. He also touches on the current climate of politics around trade as an issue including what to do with China. He uses real life anecdotes to paint in the details. And we close with a 15 minute history lesson on the Senate and his thoughts on the current state of the Senate. Ira Shapiro's Bio: He served as Chief U.S. Trade Negotiator with Japan and Canada, and as General Counsel in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative during the Clinton administration. In these roles, he was centrally involved in completing the negotiations of the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the multilateral Uruguay Round and successfully resolved contentious bilateral disputes between the U.S. and Japan on automobiles and semi-conductors. He also played a key role in the legal team that won two landmark victories in World Trade Organization (WTO) cases against China, representing the U.S. motion picture, recording, and publishing industries. Mr. Shapiro served twelve years in senior staff positions in the U.S. Senate and was part of the legal teams that helped the Presidential candidates select Vice Presidential running mates in 1992 and 2000. A veteran of American politics, Mr. Shapiro is the author of The Last Great Senate: Courage and Statesmanship in Times of Crisis, a critically acclaimed narrative history of the U.S. Senate in the late 1970s.
A famous senator once remarked, the House doesn't matter; as an influential member of the world's great deliberative body, he knew the central role of the Senate in US affairs. Ira Shapiro, a former senior Senate staff member and trade negotiator, said the Senate is broken, with party lines having become something of a border wall. And that affects the government's ultimate effectiveness. The author of "Broken: Can the Senate Save Itself and the Country?" joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin in studio.
In this episode, Coyle talks with Ambassador Ira Shapiro about his new book, Broken: Can the Senate Save Itself and the Country. Ambassador Shapiro is also the author of The Last Great Senate, and has worked in senior positions in the US Senate.
Ira Shapiro places the Senate at “ground zero for America's political dysfunction”--the institution that has failed the longest and the worst. In Broken, Ira Shapiro, a former senior Senate staffer and author of the critically-acclaimed book The Last Great Senate, offers an expert's account of some of the most prominent battles of the past decade and lays out what must be done to restore the Senate's lost luster. With a narrative that runs right through the first year of the Trump presidency, Broken will be essential reading for all concerned about the state of American politics and the future of our country. Ira Shapiro's career spans 40+ years and includes serving as ambassador under President Bill Clinton, founding a consulting firm specializing in international trade, and practicing international trade law in several major law firms. He also served in high-level positions for several United States senators and committees for 12 years. Why has the U.S. Senate gone from the world’s greatest deliberative body to the country’s most dysfunctional political institution? The answer is complicated – perpetual campaigns, vast money, excess partisanship – but Senate history points a way to a more productive Senate. Historians of the Senate Richard Baker and Ira Shapiro consider the Senate of the 1960s and 1970s when things worked much better, former leader Trent Lott offers advice to the Senate leadership and former Montana Congressman Pat Williams remembers the Senate’s greatest majority leader – Mike Mansfield.
